He needed to give off confidence; confidence that he was ready for management. That he was a good fit for the corporate culture, when sometimes he felt like he couldn't fit anywhere with people who never quite seemed to know what to do with him, didn't understand that they didn't have to do anything other than not care about the questions he could see burning behind their eyes, the questions they knew they shouldn't ask but they'd been so deeply ingrained in heteronormativity that it was killing them not to know. Killing them trying to accept that they didn't need to know.
They must needed to leave it be, and let it be ordinary.
