Born and raised in coastal New England, Christine Warren lived in the South and the Mid-Atlantic before hopping to the other side of the country to take up the life of a transplant in the Pacific Northwest. She completely bypassed those states in the middle due to her landlocking phobia. Hmm, need to research a scientific term for that...

When not scrambling frantically to complete her latest writing project, Christine spends most of her time as a crazy animal lady, hanging out with her dog Levi (he’s the one with the hair) and pretending to train him to have some manners. She also hangs out with her horse, Cal—a thoroughbred with a craving for strawberry licorice twists—her goddog, Merlin; and her best friend, fellow author Hannah Murray. In addition to playing with her pets, Christine’s hobbies include identifying dog breeds from photos of their underbellies, appreciating fine and not-so-fine wines, shopping for the perfect pair of Christian Louboutin shoes, and most of all reading things someone else had to agonize over.

Something to Howl About is book #0.5 in the new Alphaville series by Christine Warren. This is our introduction to the town of Alpha, Washington, otherwise known as Alphaville. It is known as the “home of the freaks, the losers, and the emotionally challenged.”

Dr. Annie Cryer is a genius, a child prodigy, and a wolf shifter. But a dumb mistake got her banished from her pack in New York. Now she just kind of wanders. After several years, she is offered the chance at restitution, to be allowed back home. All she has to do is go to Alphaville and help them with a problem they are having. She doesn’t hesitate, especially after she meets the man whose clan she is supposed to help.

man carrying woman over shoulder

Jonas Browning is a brown bear shifter. His clan hasn’t been reproducing and he’s afraid that his clan will just die out without any new cubs. There is no one more qualified than Dr. Annie Cryer to try to figure out what is going on. But when she walks into the office for the first time, his clan is the last thing on his mind. His inner bear recognizes her as his mate immediately. But Jonas believed that brown bears didn’t mate bond the way other shifters did. He’s ignoring what his bear wants and denies the strong urge he has to throw the sexy doctor over his shoulder and carry her off and claim her as his own.

Mine

This was a fun short little read that definitely leaves me wanting more from this brand new series. The characters were fun, interesting and sexy. All Annie wanted was to be allowed to go home. All Jonas wanted to do was to save his clan. Finding their fated mate was definitely not something either of them was expecting. Can a wolf and bear accept a mate bond? I can’t wait to continue this series with book one, Baby I’m Howling for You, where we’ll meet two brand new residents of Alphaville.

“Her mate. Her male. Joined with her, one body and one soul.”

Something to Howl About by Christine Warren is a novella that is opening up a new fantasy/paranormal shifter series, Alphaville. This new series is set in the world of Warren’s Others series but you don’t have to have read the previous series to understand this new one.

In this novella we get to meet Dr. Annie Cryer who is a wolf shifter that has been banned from returning to her pack. Annie’s been offered the chance to lift her ban if she goes to Alphaville to study some problems they have been having. After arriving though Annie meets Jonas Browning who is a bear shifter and a complete jerk upon first meeting but Annie is sure that he is supposed to be her mate.

This opening book in the new Alphaville series was a combination of just plain funny, a bit of sexy and sprinkle on some intrigue for what is to come in the Alphaville world. This short “romance” between these characters happens rather quickly with the novella length but the author did a great job giving them the depth of a shifter bond but their human sides fighting the bond which gave a few funny moments to the story.

After reading this opening novella I’m certainly curious what is in story in the Alphaville world that seems to have a lot going on in it. There were already mentions of a lot of different shifter types and how they live with each other and among the others. Looking forward to seeing what comes in the next installment of this series, Baby, I’m Howling For You.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

SOMETHING TO HOWL ABOUT is the start of a new series by Christine Warren. I haven’t read her previous books so I was quite excited to see how she would compare to my favorite PNR authors. This is a novella and a really fast read.

The two main characters are shifters, the female a wolf and the male a bear. Annie has been banned from her pack for something she did and wasn’t explained, unfortunately. I think the author left us a little hanging there. Yes, I could read the other books to find out but that’s not the purpose of this introduction. I wanted the facts, quick and dirty. It didn’t bother me too much but it might annoy readers who haven’t read her previous series either.

When Annie comes to Alphaville her purpose is to help Jonas, the alpha of the bear clan, find out why the people he’s responsible for won’t reproduce. Both of them fall in lust instantly and while Annie recognizes him right away as her mate, Jonas is a little slow on the uptake.

The bear didn’t want to hurt Annie; it wanted to taste her.

While he acknowledges their attraction he gets a rash even thinking about…mate-dom? Or is it mate-hood? Anyhoo, there is a reason for that but I found that one a little fabricated. Jonas is totally clueless and not very diplomatic about his doubts. He was a bit douche-y but somehow endearing.

“I mean, I’m obviously attracted to you, and judging by that kiss you could say the same right back, but we just met. No one said anything about mates. No need for crazy talk.”

*wince*

Since this is a novella the progression of the relationship is pretty fast, especially since the main characters spend less than 50% of the story in one room. While shifters do things differently and the suspension of disbelief is a prerequisite of PNR stories I found this a little too fast.

I love the author’s snarky writing style. I chuckled quite a bit and it’s what made this story really enjoyable. The fact that the shifters’ animals had their own personality was entertaining, it felt a bit like a symbiotic relationship. Overall, I had fun with this introduction to Christine Warren’s new series!

Three and a half for this fun short shifter story. Annie has been banished from her Pack and has led a nomadic life for the past three years. She's a genetic scientist with more degrees than you can shake stick at but all she wants to do is go home.
Jonas is a brown bear with a huge problem as none of his generation have been able to have cubs. So Annie sure seems like the answer to all their problems. Trouble is yes she's delectable and yes his inner bear is desperate to hunt her down but the absolutely insane woman keeps saying they are Mates ! Everyone knows that bears are the only species of shifters who dally, have fun but definitely never mate or do they?
I've loved this authors work in the past and heartily advise lovers of paranormal romance to hunt down her Others series. This is slightly different as its set in a town only populated by shifters so it will be interesting to see how the series progresses. If I have a gripe it's that this story felt a little short
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This was a nice intro to a new shifter series. It was short and bursting with potential. Loved the cocky bear alpha and the instant chemistry between the MCs.

Memorable Moment:
The denial of a one true mate existing for bears was weird. He was so adamant it didn't happen to his kind and then Bam! Out of the blue he's told it does and he's experiencing it? Because this was such a short read, the explanation felt too rushed. Definitely needed more page time to sort it all out.

Overall a quirky read with an alpha who gets his world turned upside down by a smart and sassy wolf and a new town chuck full of misfit shifters ready to share their own stories. This is a novella prequel to a new series and it looks promising!

Great start to what is sure to be an amazing shifter series in Alphaville.

Fun, fast-paced and full of sexual tension from the start! My only complaint, it was novella length and I wanted more.

I received this ARC copy of Something to Howl About from St. Martin's Press. This is my honest and voluntary review. Something to Howl About is set for publication Jan. 2, 2018.

Dr. Annie Cryer had been banished by her pack years ago, but when the opportunity presents itself to do the Alpha of her old pack a favor to get a chance to come back she jumps on it. She never expected to meet her mate or that he would reject her, deciding life has given her enough lemons she tells him to stay away. What happens with Grizzly shifter Jonas Browning decides he wants Annie as his mate and he changed his mind?

Fun read, this was quickly paced and I thought the parts with Jonas were humorous. Great series, each book is unexpected and a delight to read.

This short novella does contain adult scenes towards the end.

This novella follows Dr. Annie Cryer who is a wolf shifter that has been banished from her pack years ago. She has been wondering about trying to help people. Annie’s pack leader calls and asks for her to help Grizzly shifter Jonas Browning whose clan is in trouble and in return she will be let back into her pack.

For being just a novella, it has enough background information that the story felt very complete. After finishing the book, I did want more from Annie and Jonas, but it did have a natural stop.

Annie has been banished from her wolf pack, which is a big deal since wolves are always in packs. Annie has been looking for a way back to her pack and get her life back on track. Jonas is concerned that his pack is no longer producing offspring’s. Jonas has hired Annie to figure out a solution to this problem his clan is having so they will survive.

Annie is a strong character since she has been cast off and on her own for a while she has developed a tougher skin. Annie is extremely smart and tries to keep her inner wolf at bay. Jonas has his own intentions when he meets Annie and is surprised how much they like one another, it is a instalove idea, but it works with this story. Jonas needs to focus on his issues to figure out exactly how he feels. I enjoyed that we got both Annie’s and Jonas’s POV while reading it helped bring the book together for me.

I would suggest this as a weekend read. It was so quick to read it could easily be read in one sitting and it kept me entertained the entire read. The story is very compact and has a lot going on in it that it was a perfect quick read.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley to provide an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of this book.

Something to Howl About was a quick intro novella about the town of Alphaville, where shifter outcasts live. I enjoyed the story of Jonas and Annie and can't wait for more.

When Dr. Annie Cryer is asked to help the town mayor about the birthing issue with the Grizzly population, she never expected to be drawn to Grizzly alpha Jonas Browning. Will she be able to convince this commitment phobic bear that they are mated or will he turn his back on this lone wolf?

While I enjoyed this story as it provided a quick introduction to Alphaville, i did find a few ooen-ended issues that were not resolved. I'm hoping to get more of their story in the next book. I would like to thank Netgalley and SMP romance for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. Bravo 4 stars! ~Ratula

Oooh . . . I flove a new shifter series! And I couldn’t wait to read Something to Howl About over the holidays! And I was not disappointed!

I was immediately immersed in Annie and Jonas’ romance. Well, the romance that might not have happened if Jonas hadn’t pulled his head out of the sand! LOL

I loved Annie and her strength and her take no shit attitude! It served her well when dealing with Jonas and his typical male stupidity. I loved Annie’s and Jonas’ interactions. Loved how she gave no quarter and really tried to keep their relationship professional since Jonas really was clueless over the whole fated mate thing!

I loved how they came together—loved how their romance set up the whole Alphaville series and I can’t wait for more! ~ Missy, 4 stars

Classic PNR with a couple of things that bugged me.
- Concept of mates. As soon as they lay eyes on each other they want to have sex and deep meaningful feeling grow like mushrooms after rain. :/
- Inner wolf for heroine reminded me a lot of inner goddess from Fifty Shades of Grey
"The force of that direct attraction almost made her dizzy. It definitely made her wolf squirm and whimper like a puppy looking to be stroked."

Something to Howl About is a short novella that does not bring anything important to the Alphaville series or to the pnr repertoire. Alphaville can be read without it, so if you can't get it for free or borrow it, I don't think it's worth spending your money on a couple of mediocre sex scenes.

Something to Howl About by Christine Warren

Light hearted paranormal series opener. Full of humor, with much of it on the sarcastic side. Humor of the kind that doesn’t take it all so seriously. My favorite type of writing.
I don’t know why I haven’t read this author before but will absolutely look for this new series as well as looking into the original of this spinoff.

The below makes the town of Alphaville sound dark and sad but that was not at at my first impression. To me it is a town of rejuvenation, hope and understanding. I look forward to getting to know the residents.
“Every shifter in America knew about the town. It was where they sent their problems, like an open air asylum for damaged Others. Shifters would couldn’t shift, or who couldn’t control the process. Ones with anger issues, or who had survived trauma. Even ones who needed to recover from grave physical traumas.
And, of course, the outcasts. The ones who had been shunned by their packs, prides, clans, or family packs.”

I am usually a fan of Christine Warren but this was just too much insta-love and WAY over the top alpha male mess. The first time Annie and Jonas are in a room together (like only a few minutes since he laid eyes on her) he has her backed into a corner and slobbering all over her.

Maybe it is just my mood but I was just not impressed with skipping any pretense of a romance and just moving right into "mate" and then him thinking that he should not link himself to any single woman was just too much for me. I may have been reading too many historical romances to be able to shift into whatever mindset it took to enjoy this so 3 stars for a decent story but neither of the main couple endeared me to either of them.

The above was my opinion at the 33% mark, I just skipped ahead to the 50% mark and speed read the rest and it did get better (still stayed at the 3 Star level IMHO) but the real job of this story I guess was to make me interested enough to read the first full length story in this series Baby, I'm Howling For You so that DID work since I will be grabbing that next.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!
***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I received a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I usually buy Christine Warren’s books in paperback!!

The cover is beautiful! I like it!

This is a prequel in a new series called Alphaville by Christine Warren which is a spin-off from The Others series. This is an adult series, and this is only a novella about 86 pages.

This was a quick read, but it is full of detail and a great story as is the usual for this author. I really like Annie. You see her grow because she was a loner and skittish in the beginning, and once the scientist comes out, she is very confident and in her element. Jonas started out good, and then he turned into an idiot for a while until his mom straightens him out. Even though there isn’t the action I usually crave, this was entertaining, and I couldn’t put it down.

I highly recommend to any shifter fan especially if you already love Christine’s work! I can’t wait to read book 1!

This is my first time reading Christine Warren’s work. It was not a bad experience, but I felt it could have been better. The story was entertaining and easy to read.
I loved the author’s view on the world of shifters. This installment introduces readers to a town called Alphaville. This is a town, which welcomes shifters of all species down on their luck and have issues be it financial, physical and emotional dealing with. The town provides a haven for them to recover, recuperate, retreat and rejuvenate.
I enjoyed the interaction between the characters, which is filled with heat and humour. I laughed out a few times. I loved spending time with them and wished I had more time to know them.
However, as this is a novella there were a few things missing from the story. I believe with novellas, readers are cheated, as we are not given sufficient information to establish a connection with the characters. In addition, they sometimes come to an abrupt end leaving us less than satisfied with how the events are concluded. This was no different.
Character Development:
We are told that Annie (the female protagonist) had been banished from her pack. Since then she has wandered aimlessly from city to city. However, the author failed to enlighten her readers about the events that led to her banishment. I never had the chance to get to know the characters on a deeper level.
Romance
Some may consider this an insta-love scenario, but I am not sure I would call it that. I saw it more as a case of falling in lust. As is the norm for most of the shifter stories I have read, the beasts within recognises their mate from the moment they meet. This was no different. However, there was no romantic development. There was no effort by either of the characters in fighting for their relationship.
Story
Annie came to Alphaville to offer her expertise as a geneticist to assist a bear clan who feared they were facing extinction. I found this aspect of the story to be lacking pertinent details. I never saw her using her skills in arriving at her conclusion. The author also did not follow up on Annie’s option to return to her pack after fulfilling her assignment in Alphaville. The story came to an abrupt end, leaving me with several unanswered questions.
Conclusion/Recommendation
Overall, this was a fun story, and it provided me with the much-needed escape from reality.

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Something to Howl About is a short novella introducing Alphaville. The town of Alpha is where shifters who don't really get along in the outside world come to reside. Not because they are bad or anything, they just aren't of a pack mentality or prefer their own ways.

It just so happens that Dr. Annie Cryer is wandering the country without a place to settle since being booted from her pack. She is excited to get the call from her Alpha saying if she goes to Alpha to help with a problem, he will allow her back to the pack. Annie heads straight for Alpha determined to get their problem solved and get back to her beloved pack. However, things do not go as planned when she comes face to face with a certain bear and her mating bell rings.

Jonas can't believe he is so drawn to this shifter and has these beliefs that bears do not have the same mating instincts that wolves do, and therefore Annie's claim to be his mate is not his problem. He just wants a little fun, not this serious mating stuff. Fortunately he gets set straight. What good bear doesn't listen to his mama?

Annie is a strong-willed and brilliant character. She will get to the bottom of this whole mating discussion. I really enjoyed the banter between these two. They were a lot of fun. This was a really cute introduction to the characters of Alpha, and I'm excited to learn more about those that choose to live there. This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict

Christine Warren has been my favorite shifter author since I discovered the world of shifters. When I was told about this new series, I was out if my mind with glee. If you've read her Other's series, you know what I'm talking about.

This was a great introduction into this new series. It is just a novella, so it's just a taste of what's to come. It was gritty and downright feral. The back and forth between mates that had one denying the process. I seriously can't wait to dig into Baby, I'm Howling For You.

There was nothing wrong with this book. It was a short shifter book.. I am excited about the town.. but thats about all I got out of this book.. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It was a kind of intro into Warren's new series and that is exactly what we got with this book. A short intro. The romance wasn't great. I think it could have been if the book was longer. But there isn't a whole lot of development that can be done in such a short story. But like I said I am excited for the town and I am excited for this series!

Review Copy from the Publisher

Here is a novella of about 80 pages introducing a new series by Christine Warren titled Alphaville, which will be about a town created by shifters and become a haven for those who don’t have anywhere else to go.
Inevitably, those who know me won’t be surprised to know I first read the volume 1, Baby I’m Howling for you, before this novella.
It’s a good thing though because if Something to Howl About reads easily, it’s also a most classical story suffering from the reduced format.

Annie is a renowned geneticist doctor (and other diplomas probably too numerous in relation to her age), that’s why she finds herself in Alphaville to help the local brown bears clan with a fertility problem, with the promise to be allowed back in her clan once finished. Because Annie is above all a female wolf-shifter who was banned from her pack three years before for having put people in danger. How, why, we still don’t know at the end of the novella, which is really frustrating. She’s presented as shy and unassuming at the beginning but she shows a real character in a few pages.

Jonas is a brown bear who called on her services because bear-shifters of his generation can’t have children. He’s the typical alpha male, stubborn, sure of himself and of his seduction, renowned to flirt around and not inclined to settle down. When his inner bear expresses itself loudly in front of Annie, he only thinks to have fun, even rejecting the heroine in a quite non gracious way, and saying that bears don’t mate for life. He’ll need a good slap behind the head from his mother to realize his error.

Just as in the volume 1 following there are unusual but funny comparisons (“nervous as a salmon at a teddy-bear picnic”) or puns about animals and their characters. The story about the fertility problem is quickly explained at the end, and the couple patches things up for steamy (but not crude) love scenes like the author writes so well.

Unfortunately the short format doesn’t allow a real development of the characters. And for once there’s a bear-shifter there’s not a shell of a transformation to be seen.

Something to Howl About by Christine Warren is book 0.5 in the "Alphaville" series. This is the story of Annie Cryer and Jonas Browning. This new series is a spin off; set in the world of Warren’s Others series. You do not have to have read the Others series books to read this and follow along. This is a novella and a really fast read.
This basically is about two shifters- one is a female wolf and the other is a male bear-- Dr. Annie Cryer & Jonas Browning. Annie was banished from her pack. Suddenly after 3 years, her pack contacts her and offers her a chance to be reinstated within her pack if she goes to Alphaville and help out the pack there with a problem they are having. She goes and meets Joans, the alpha of the pack and wow…he is a surly alpha and doesn’t want any help from Annie. Annie immediately recognizes something Jonas doesn’t…he is her mate and she cant walk away. There is this connection between them, this intense chemistry. Annie wants to help resolve the issue she was sent to help on but Jonas is a jerk about receiving Annie’s help even though they fall instantly head over feet for one another. The insta-lust is strong between these two…Annie knows immediately Jonas is her mate but Jonas…not at all..it takes him awhile to recognize who Annie is to him. Will he figure it out in time? Does Annie resolve what she was sent to do?
This is a short novella and it progresses at a rapid pace. There are some things that do not get explained in the story and, to me, needed to be explained further ( i.e Annie’s banishment from her pack. Other than the small missing explanations on a few things, this was a great paranormal romance for a new series that I am very much looking forward to. Annie and Jonas make a fantastic couple and their chemistry is just perfect.

My Rating: 4.5 stars *****

I've always loved Christine Warren's shifter stories. Not that I didn't love her gargoyles too, but her shifters are my favorite. Something to Howl About is the first book in her new Alphaville series. It branches between her The Others series very nicely.

If you follow me then you know that Grizzlies are my favorite of the shifters with tigers running a close second. Not to worry there's a tiger in this series too. Happy days!

Since I love Grizzlies I couldn't wait for this story. It starts out so good with this very smart woman who isn't sure her place in life. She's thrown out of her other life and has coasted in life till now. Really liked Annie. She has such a sweet attitude when she so sad inside.

How lucky is she to find Jonas? I think she's lucky but then again...love grizzlies! Jonas is really set in his ways. He thinks one way and can't seem to get himself out of that mind set. Thank God for his mother.

This is a very short story but that doesn't take away for how good it is. It makes you want to learn more about the town and it's people and you get a real good romance to boot. It did it's job well!

Awesome introduction to a new series!

All Annie Cryer wants is to return home, but she knows that may never happen. So when she is offered the ability to go home by performing a job, she jumps at the chance and lands herself in Alpha … and into the presence of handsome and danger to her libido, Jonas Browning.

Jonas needs help before his clan goes extinct. They need to know why there is a problem with his clan of Grizzlies conceiving. What he didn’t expect was the expert to be so darn luscious and captivating to both himself and his bear. But Jonas makes a stupid comment and if he can’t figure out how to fix what he broke then there will be no chance with Annie. Time to man up … if he can figure out how to do it without putting his foot back in his mouth!

OMG!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I have really liked Annie since she was introduced in the beginning of the Other’s series. No danger or intrigue in this story, but a highly intelligent female wolf and clueless grizzly who need to find their way before it is too late. There were definitely some funny moments that had me smiling and laughing. I cannot WAIT for more of this series to come out because there are all new characters for me to learn about and enjoy.

Something to Howl About is a super short, but great introduction to the Alphaville world. In this book, we have Annie a wolf shifter and Jonas who is a Grizzly shifter. Annie is a very cool character and I loved her. Jonas has a couple of hang-ups which made him seem too human and plain. They are about the mating in his species and it was very weird reading about them. Thank God, his momma put some sense into him. I hope we will see these two more when the full-length books come into play. I was very happy to find out how the mating works in this universe. It's the one I prefer when I am reading a shifter book, so I will be a happy girl when I am reading the rest of the books. As you might have already realized, I am saying that you should read this book and the ones that are coming next. I am definitely going to do it. Even when Jonas was acting like an idiot, I was liking the book. I enjoyed the story and the way the author wrote it. I hope it won't disappoint later on.

ARC REVIEW

This came out earlier this month and it's a pretty easy going romance that helps set up the town and what it is like there. Annie is a genius and as a favor to her old alpha with the promise of being reinstated into the pack she is suppose to help the bears with their problem. Jonas asked for help because he is worried about his clan and falling head over heels for the little wolf who is suppose to fix things wasn't supposed to happen. When she tells him that they are mates he overreacts, but is it too late to reconcile his foot in mouth disease? Leave it to Mama Bear to set things right.

This was a great novella and a good start for the series. I haven't read Christine Warren before but after reading this I sure am going to start now.

Something to Howl About by Christine Warren is the start of the brand new paranormal romance series Alphaville.

This is a fast and fun shifter novella that hits the ground running. As we’ve come to expect from Ms. Warren, Something to Howl About is fantabulous and filled with humor, great characters with wonderful chemistry and heat all wrapped up in a well-defined world that we’d just love to escape into.

This is a nice teaser to introduce us to the town of Alphaville. Jonas is a bear shifter and his clan is in jeopardy. The are slowly going extinct. There has not been a birth in 100 years. Dr Annie Cryer is a genetic specialist. She was banned from her wolfpack several years ago and floats from place to place. when they meet, Annie knows Jonas is her mate. Jonas does not react well and things get a little testy. After a somewhat funny conversation with his mother, Jonas sees the light. Nice set up for more interesting stories and characters.
