In the case of "let's relaunch a series that worked just because (money)," we get a sequel to Orange. I was torn about being excited over it as I firmly believed the story that needed to be told was told when the series concluded. Nevertheless, I was willing to give this sequel the benefit of the doubt seeing that it was from a different POV – the selfless, charming Suwa.
Strike 1: Suwa, who I have actually now lost some respect for because of how spineless this volume made him out to be. The thing is, I don't think the portrayal of him has changed all that much but I think seeing it from his eyes, thinking it as his thoughts and hearing it in his voice has definitely made me view his self-sacrificial stance as soppy and melodramatic.
Strike 2: The timeline was ALL OVER THE PLACE and I had to make sure I wasn't in the future past, past present, alternate present, parallel future and/or various combinations of. It didn't help that Naho and Suwa looked like they hadn't aged a day, where at least in the original series we had them in school uniforms to contrast the past from their adult selves.
Strike 3: This is not a spoiler as we know they end up married with a kid from the original series, but Suwa's sudden proposal felt awkward and and Naho's unexpected change of heart felt like a consolation prize. One of the things I loved about the original series was the unknowing mystery of how their relationship blossoms in the absence of Kakeru. Having it now dictated in this unsatisfied way is a disappointment.
Endearment and loyalty to Orange made me question what I felt about this volume, and the fact that there will be a Volume 7. I'm absolutely being very harsh with my rating of Orange: future because of the endearment I have for the series but I will still check out the next volume because of the loyalty I have for it, albeit with a bit of the shine rubbed off.
