Revelry's Tempest #2

Of Sin & Sanctuary

Rate this book
A lady with a heart haunted by past mistakes. A scarred rake determined to avoid all responsibility. One night of gaming to change both of their fortunes.

No good deed goes unpunished.
Riddled with debt after her husband’s death, Lady Vandestile spent years rebuilding her life—a life free of any entanglements with men that would only betray her. But pity has its place. And after fronting funds to the wayward brother of her dearest friend, Lady Vandestile wakes in the morning to find Lord Alton has lost an enormous sum—enough to threaten the very existence of her exclusive gaming house. Enough to threaten her future. A future she once thought never to have. Demanding payment, or at least a guarantee to use against a loan, Violet is forced to corner the rake—or risk losing the only security she has in life.

Demons of the past that refuse to yield.
He lost her money. And he did it callously, without a care. Violet had plenty, after all. And Theo had none. Never mind that he once would have moved heaven and earth for her. But that was before. Before the war marred him for life. Before he turned into a monster.

One disastrous night of gaming could change both of their fortunes.
As a third son, Violet had always been far out of Theo’s reach. Inheriting the earldom and its destitute estate had done nothing to change that fact. But as their lives unexpectedly entwine, danger rears, and Theo and Violet must gather the strength to not only move on from the past, but to surrender to the demands of their hearts.

The books in the Revelry's Tempest series by K.J. Jackson are each stand-alone stories and can be read individually in any order. These historical romances are set in the Regency and Victorian eras, and do not shy away from scenes with steamy heat, occasional naughty language, and moments that might possibly make you squirm.

This story has a Gothic feel to it, with a heavy overlay of grief and unresolved anger at the injustices committed against the main characters. In their youth, Violet and Theo had been carefree good friends and then sweethearts fully expecting to eventually marry. Apart from loving each other, they also genuinely enjoyed each other’s company and had a great deal in common. Unfortunately the harsh reality of the marriage mart intruded on their hopes and dreams and they were caste asunder. From the moment that they were forcibly parted, life became cruel and harsh for both of them and whilst Theo had terrible inner and outer scars, the scars Violet bore were no less traumatic. The past intrudes on their lives and Theo has to race against time to save Violet but the question is whether or not he will be able to regain her trust and her love. Of Sin and Sanctuary is well written and highly suspenseful. As a rake finding sanctuary in the love of a good woman, Theo touches the heart. However, it is Violet’s pain that causes the reader to agonise over the heroine and want to reach out to comfort her. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Wow is a good word to describe this book. From the opening words, I was endeared to Violet. I wanted to hug her and tell her that all would be right in time. It's a rare book that makes me feel that way about a fictional character.
Ms. Jackson gives us a book that shows how love is rarely easy and is not all roses and sunshine. At times, love is lost before a journey can be taken to a happily ever after.
As you start this book, be prepared to be quickly drawn in and ready to keep reading until the end. I wanted to know how it would all end for Violet and Theo.
I have enjoyed the series, but this book is my favorite. It can easily be read as a stand alone, but if it is your first, I would encourage you to go back and read the first two as some characters reappear.

Another great read in this absorbing series. I experienced a rollercoaster of emotion whilst reading it though. It was good to know more about Theo and Violet, having met them briefly in the first book. Their relationship did not go smoothly and they had a number of trials to experience. Then just as everything is going along sweetly an evil villain pops up to create mayhem. This is a book that is difficult to put down. I hope we read of Cassandra's story in the next book. I received a pre-release copy and have voluntarily and honestly reviewed it.

I have so many thoughts on this book it will be hard to express them all. Wonderful, intense, heartwarming are but a few. This is a story of Theodore Williston, fourteenth Earl of Alton and Violet, Lady Vandestile, widow, who when they knew each other several years ago were simply Theo and Vee. Sweethearts when young, Theo's only desire was to marry Vee, but that hope was crushed because at the time he was only the third son and had no hope of a title. Theo left to join the war and Violet married Lord Vandestile as her uncle wished. Many years later they meet up again as two broken souls who are determined to keep to themselves. But fate has a different direction for them both. As all of K J Jackson's books, you are drawn into the emotions of Theo and Violet and feel part of the story unfolding. I loved all the characters and hope that some will appear with their own tale soon. If you enjoy a true love story that pulls at your heart, this is a must read.

I really didn't "read" this. I had to DNF this at 57% when I found myself skimming page after page and not caring that the plot wasn't being advanced and I really didn't care about either of the main characters.

Just ok, I've read worse. It seems to be very difficult to find a romance author I like.

Redemption and love in a historical romance? Sign me the bloody hell up.

First off, I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first one but still found it very gripping and I didn’t want to put it down, but life got in the way which is why it took me a long time to finish it. Although it was nice to prolong the story a bit. But from the get go I was drawn to Violet, I truly, truly felt for her and wish I could just give her a big long hug and tell her it would be okay. It takes a lot for me to feel that way toward a character, especially so early on in a story, before I even knew everything. I just felt for her and it made me so sad. It’s just so well written and it even had some suspenseful moments.

There was just so much grief and anger to this story and I revelled in it. In this particular series these characters go through quite a bit to get their happy ending and it’s not inconspicuous situations that’s interrupting their lives, it’s heavy loaded circumstances. Situations that do take a toll on people and shape who they later become. The hero and heroine knew each other before, and even had a tendre for each other. They became separated a few years previous, and the years that they were apart were not kind to either of them. They both went through their troubles and both had to face a lot demons to get their ending. It was so satisfying to read. They flowed off of each other quite well, you can tell that they had a history and knew each other well. They never pushed each other for information on their pasts and instead waited until the other person was ready to speak, I cannot stand it in books when a character gets all standoffish when another character isn’t ready to share their burden. That’s not healthy. Whilst both of their pasts does strongly interfere with both their presents it all ends satisfyingly happy in the end.

I usually don’t like stories where characters have to be together to feel ‘whole’ again, but these two were just so broken that they found comfort within each other. A second chance at love will always help you overcome situations that have transpired whilst apart. I was enthralled from the get go.

I have not read Of Valor and Vice. Of Sin and Sanctuary was gifted to me by a friend who loves to send me books I would never see otherwise.

Of Sin and Sanctuary was good. But I don’t think it’ll make my list of favorites. Even though it was a historical romance, it didn’t feel like one. And, yes, I know that’s totally subjective.

I enjoyed the characters and the plot. The descriptions were good, but not great. And the dialogue was good, but not great. Actually, the whole thing was good, but not great. I might be a little spoiled to know so many truly great authors.

Do I recommend Of Sin and Sanctuary? Yes. It’s enjoyable. It’s got mystery and danger and romance and birth order angst. Just…don’t expect Dickens.

Pleasantly Surprised

I have had 'Of Sin and Sanctuary ' in my library for awhile, but because I hadn't been overly blown away by books in other genres that Jackson wrote, I had not rushed to read it. I'm glad I finally did because this was actually a good read. Even though I have not yet read book 1 of the series, this can stand on its own (although I will most likely to back and read the first book). It's a little more angsty than I usually like, but it fits the dramatic lives of Violet and Theo. The back stories are a little over the top, but it's delivered in a manner that is believable for the historical period. Think I'll at least read another book in the series and might even end up eventually reading the remaining books.

A third son, never meant to inherit. An heiress, his first and only love. Years of torment and anguish separate their first stirrings of love.

This very peculiar story of love and loss was quite captivating. This second in series novel explores an HEA for Adalia's tortured brother Theo and her life hardened best friend, Violet. The layers are peeled back and we see what makes these two damaged souls tick. It is painful in parts and transcendent in others.

The gambling house takes center stage as a drunken evening meshes the two protagonists into working together to solve a problem instigated by Theo.

I look forward to the next installment in this series.

Redemption and Love!

Lady Violet Vandestile has been left destitute her life as she knew it gone.
She always thought she would’ve married Theodore Williston, dreaming of life with Theo one minute....then he’s gone. Now the dreams shattered and her life will never be the same. A widow she’s been through so much, she vows never to be in that position ever again. Broken but a survivor she runs an exclusive gaming house with precision.
Theo a third son never expected to inherit an Earldom, never expected to live through the hell he was in, or escape the demons forever chasing him. And never did he expect to owe a massive debt to the woman he would have moved mountains for. But that was in another time another life. Now he’s a monster broken and definitely not the man for Violete.

This is a powerful love story, of two people who had everything a young couple with love blossoming of new beginnings denied them. A second chance at love is possible but will they be able to overcome the scars and trust in the love they once shared. Healing comes in many forms but the healing of the soul comes from unconditional love. The whole story was enthralling and keeps you turning the pages. Intrigue, deranged individuals bent on a twisted revenge and a hero who finally gets to save his Lady love. K.J Jackson has a gift for writing emotional must read stories!
I received a complimentary copy from the author for my honest unbiased opinion.

This story is about strength and perseverance. Getting through hell, making it out the other side and finding the courage to eventually put the shattered pieces back together. Violet has managed to do this for the most part, she has slowly fixed the mess her husband left behind when he died and rebuilt her life but she has closed her heart. Theodore is still lost and rudderless, he spends his nights trying to forget the horrors of war by drinking and gambling. Violet & Theo have a past, they hoped to become married but societal dictates got in the way.

Years later they are reunited by chance and circumstances force them to work together. They have to trust each other which is hard, but they each see a glimmer in the other of the person they loved when they were younger so they try. Once they find their way back to each other, to sincerely give the other a chance and into their battered hearts and minds, then they truly begin to heal.

This story has danger, intrigue, passion and heart. It’s hard to put down and you truly find yourself rooting for these two. Theo and Violet find their way forward together. These two succeed where others would fail because of trust, forgiveness and respect. This is a wonderful story, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

4 (enjoy Maureen Driscoll, Elisa Braden, Sophie Jordon, Samantha Holt)

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series).

The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was enjoyable. I really did like the H/H for this book; very well paired as a couple. I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me).

writing style is easy to follow, humorous moments, the give and take dialogue enjoyable.

romantic/sexual content is written well throughout the book (kissing, oral, love making). I’d rate it 3/5 hotness and steam.

would absolutely recommend the book and the series. I still enjoyed the book for a one time read and the series.

Another outstanding book

I gave 5 stars because it is so good and inspirational. The story completely caught my interest from very beginning to very end. It is about two broken people with a tragic past, and how they reconnect from the earlier past. It is such a unique story and people. It is full of intrigue, secrets, adventure, and romance with some tasteful sensual love scenes. They have problems to understand each other and their secrets. It is not as some books, a long drawn out love hate relationship.Even stressful, for readers, and H/h problems never drag on and off. It is fast moving story. You cannot understand all till end. A real page turner, and hard to put. I love all books I have loved all the books from this author. This books is a story of hope for everyone. I recommend for everyone. I can't wait to start next book by this author.

Theo's Salvation!

Theo and Violet were sweethearts. Theo was the third son of an Earl without many prospects. Violet was an heiress and her uncle had determined that she would marry a title so he refused Theo's suit and told him not to ruin Violet's life. So Theo left and Violet married the Viscount her uncle had picked out for her.
Five years later Theo is back from the war and is now the Earl while Viola is a widow running a gaming hell called Revelry's Tempest.
Theo has been to hell and back and is totally withdrawn from the world! Viola no longer trusts men and allows no-one to get close to her other than Theo's sister Adalia and their friend, Cassandra.
But they are to find out that Viola is Theo's salvation while Theo is Viola's redemption.
A good fast paced story with a lot of action and romance.

Violet and Theo had known each other for years. They had been in love. But Theo being a third son was not considered worthy and told to get lost. He went to war and disappeared. Violet was married off to a man who used all her money and incurred tons of debt then died. Leaving her broken. She became the manager of a gambling establishment and over time managed to pay off the debts she’d been left with. Then Theo showed up at her gambling establishment and lost money he didn’t have. Now she is in debt again. Can they find their way out of this mess together. They each are so hurt by pasts that haunt them.
It is a moving story.

All of this book is well-written and much of it is moving. This story of two very damaged people returning to each other is relatable. But I had a big eye-roll moment when the evil, mal-intentioned Fiona showed up and the hero decided the best way to protect the heroine was to break up with her (after promising her emotional safety) instead of, oh, uh, just telling her the truth. File that one under the heading of “stupid plot device” because that file will come in handy after the hero produces a long-dead-but-not-really long-lost love of the evil Fiona to procure the information necessary for him to save the heroine. Why mess up a compelling story with this kind of outlandish contrivance? Everything surrounding this idiocy is five stars.

Stimulating from beginning to end

Well done! Overall quality of writing was wonderful. The story was believable and kept your interest from beginning to end. Proofreading was really good too. I won't recap the story for you. The prelude covered that just fine. A man who looks at you like you're his air, willing to leave in order to protect and willing to fight so as not to ever leave again is Vee's sanctuary. A few intimacy scenes tastefully done no cheating or cliffhanger and you get a happy ending. Enjoy!

Good read!!

This is a very emotional story of two very scarred people. I thought the plot and storyline very well done as these very damaged individuals work to help each other. The characters are well described and developed in a very believable way as the story progresses.
The romance between the two is so strained yet that much stronger as they identify each others psychological injuries.
I would recommend this book to readers of historical romance fiction.

Lady Vanderstile thinks never to feel for a man again but Lord Alton has never forgotten his first love.
As they forge through her misgivings and his guilt of the people that were killed under his command, they find each other. Can they get past the past?
It helped that Theo, Lord Alton, had patience.
Revenge from someone that Theo thought dead compromises Viola’s, Lady Vanderstile’s, life.
Theo’s patience is rewarded in the end.

Not as interesting as the first book. But still good

I found that I couldn’t really understand the motivations of the main characters so the book was a little slow for me.

It picks up towards the end and gets exciting with intrigue and danger.

There is sexy times before marriage if that kind of thing bothers you. The scenes were well written and not too explicit.

I’m interested enough to go ahead and get the third book in the series.

I think I love the Theo and Violet story best in the Revelry's Tempest line. We meet Theo in the 1st book, and he and Violet share a young love that was interrupted. Violet and Theo both have gone through tragedy, and find each other on the other side of that, both willing to try again.

This story is a great deal about them learning how to heal each others broken parts and find something whole when they're together.

I enjoyed this very different our Hero comes home from a war minus a foot!

This story is one of my favorite because we can see the horror that soldiers had a form of PTSD. So many came home minus a limb but did not want their families to see them. The horrors are written and the end is of course wonderful. Thank you for your honesty, I went from wanting to clubber him for not going home. As the story continued I found myself liking him more and more. Great story.

Another great read from J K!

What an amazing twisted web of a tale. Theo and Violet carried so much horrendous baggage from life, challenges beyond control, the war (Theo) and the past. The strength to do so ultimately came from each other and the story that unfolds through a masterful storyteller’s doing is almost unreal. But it is exactly what I expect when reading any of K J Jackson’s books - great characters, an amazing storyline and that always needed HEA!

A Fantastic Read

This book kept me turning the pages. It is a romance filled with twists and turns. Our hero has both physical and emotional scars. Our heroine had her heart broken, and to top it off, someone is out for revenge. Does love heal their scars? Do they survive the evil plot? If you like Regency romances with some steam, you will enjoy this book.

Wow! I really loved the first book of Revelry's Tempest (Of Valor & Vice) but this one really topped it. Found myself getting so emotionally involved in the story of the two lead characters, both tortured souls, who somehow were able to find a way to triumph over all they had experienced. This author rocks.

This was a good read. Although I found it hard to believe that a man like Theo would let go of her so easily TWICE. He seemed to me the kind who would fight for what he believed in. Some parts of him as well as her personality I found to be conflicting but other than that, It was a good captivating story.

Wow! Everything AND the kitchen sink.

This novel has it all. Complicated, scarred (both in body and spirit), acutely human characters drive an intricate plot through a near maze of scenes and backstory flashbacks. Both heroine and hero have secrets born in their pasts which threaten their passionate love.
