Happily Everlasting World #3

Fooled Around and Spelled In Love

Rate this book
Welcome to Everlasting, Maine, where there's no such thing as normal.

Anna Crawford is well aware her town is filled with supernaturals, but she isn’t exactly willing to embrace her paranormal gifts. Her aunt says she’s a witch-in-denial. All Anna wants is to live a quiet “normal” life and run her business, Witch’s Brew Coffee Shop and Bakery. But everything is about to be turned upside down the moment Jackson Argent walks into her life.

Jackson isn’t sure why he agreed to come back to his boyhood home of Everlasting. It’s like a spell was cast and he couldn’t say no. Covering the Cranberry Festival isn’t exactly the hard-hitting news this reporter is used to. But when a local death is ruled an accident, and the police aren’t interested in investigating, he takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of the mystery. To do that, he’ll need to enlist the help of the beautiful coffee shop owner.

It soon becomes apparent things are not what they seem and more than coffee is brewing in Everlasting.

This book is part of a series set in the magical town of Everlasting where paranormals go about their daily business and nothing is normal. What makes this concept even more fun is the fact that each book is written by a different author. Yes these are quite lighthearted stories with romance but there's also a mystery to solve that will keep readers guessing right up until the big reveal.
It took me a while to fully warm to Anna if honest as I initially found her a little abrasive but I cannot say the same for her interfering, possibly kooky Aunt Polly ! Now add in Jackson, a man with secrets of his own and we have the seeds for romance. Both Anna and Polly are technically Witches but it's Jacksons unusual ability that really impressed this reader. No spoilers but Jackson has history with the town of Everlasting and as their annual festival takes shape he's there to uncover a story but he just hadn't expected to actually stumble across a murder . A murder that the police department try to pass off as accidental death !
This was a sweet romance and the author kept me entertained as I tried to work out just who was the murderer and why ? Not exactly red herrings thrown around but definitely oddities to tease and tantalise the reader. This mystery was fun to read although you've probably guessed my favourite character was Polly but without her special brand of craziness perhaps Anna wouldn't have met her very own knight in shining armour? This was a perfect read for an autumn day and I happily recommend reading these stories about the unusual residents of Everlasting.
This voluntary take is of an advance reader copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

4 Star review of Fooled Around and Spelled (The Happily Everlasting Series #3) by Michelle M Pillow
Audio Review:

Michelle M Pillow is a new author to me as is the narrator B.J. Harrison and I have no idea why that is. It’s a cozy mystery set in Everlasting, Maine (love the name) and one that I found enjoyable.
There are twists, turns and surprises in Fooled Around and Spelled as Anna Crawford buries her head in the sand as she tries to deny her paranormal abilities and focus on running Witch's Brew Coffee Shop and Bakery (again I just love the name).

All that changes when Jackson Argent, a reporter returns home to Everlasting to report on the local festival. When a a body turns up, he isn’t satisfied with the findings and decides to investigate and asks Anna to help him. What follows is a story filled with romance, mystery, humour, secrets and danger, with enough clues to satisfy my inner detective spirit.

The narrator BJ Harrison was also new to me but I thoroughly enjoyed the voices that were used and they brought the story to life for me and enhanced my enjoyment of the story.

“You son-of-a-biscuit bacon-loving daisy head!”

I just adore this series. It’s like a seventy-something summer day laying in the grass with your puppy watching little tufts of clouds float past - a wonderful escape from reality in a pleasant, eccentric town stuffed with magnificent (supernatural) characters. The main characters (in this case, Anna) are totally likeable, the love interests (Jackson) are wonderful, and the story is satisfying without the edge of unnecessary angst that ruins so many novels.

Fooled Around and Spelled in Love by Michelle M Pillow

3rd of the Everlasting series. Different authors connected by a town of paranormals and characters within. Part lite mystery, part romance. Fully enjoyable. Can be read as a stand alone.
A witch and a journalist investigate a mysterious death with the help of a magical camera. But can that antique be trusted?

Everlasting is a perfectly normal town if you are supernatural. Anna runs a bakery and works full time and keeping her aunt out of trouble. When her close friend Gary dies she will team up reluctantly with the new guy in town. Jackson is a reporter and he really wants to get to know Anna better. Working together will definitely bring some sparks. Now if only Anna could trust her heart and her aunt. This was my first read by this author and it was a hit with me!

Somehow Michelle Pillow manages to take me to a different world with every series and leaves me wanting more. Another great work. Loved it from the start. The characters are one better than the other and the story is very well written, loved the mystery around George.
Too bad it ended too soon as i want more!!

This one is what it is and no more and no less. If you don't go in expecting great literature, but just a romantic romp, you won't be disappointed. The mystery was interesting.

So much fun!

Where there’s Aunt Polly, there are gnomes, there is crazy, and there is a lot of fun!

And this official first appearance from the crazy witch is what started it all.

Add to that the wonderful Anna, the extremely hot and charming Jackson, and everyone in Everlasting, throw in a mystery to solve, and you’re in for a wonderful treat.

This is book 3 in the series. This is an excellent thrilling story with a touch of mystery!

Anna Crawford owner/operator of Witch's Brew Coffee Shop & Bakery feels like she's being pulled in 50 different directions so far she has been able to manage but when a dear friend dies suddenly Anna feels like something isn't right.
Jackson is on assignment to cover the cranberry festival but when someone dies basically in front of him he decides to look into the death even though the police have ruled it as anaphylaxis.
Anna and Jackson team up to figure out what happened to Anna's friend George and what was he hiding....

Murder and romance. Quirky and interesting characters. A lovely cozy mystery that is a bit more serious than previous stories about the people in Everlasting. The hero Anna, is a witch that refuses to use her powers. Jackson is there to get a story. Together they work to solve the murder while developing feelings for each other. Sweetly romantic with a satisfying mystery.

It was a good book. It had romance magic and lots of suspense . I did not know who the killer was until the end and I'm usually pretty good at figuring it out which was a plus for me.

What did you say, weren’t we talking about scones?

Fooled Around and Spelled in Love by Michelle M. Pillow is the third book in the Happily Everlasting Series, each story is written by one of the four authors. The story takes place in Everlasting, Maine a small town along the coast, “where there’s no such thing as normal.” I found this book not as funny as the last one, but I liked the mystery a little better.

The town of Everlasting, Maine continues to grow on me. This story starts with the death of one of the town’s young gentlemen and how our young sleuths figure it out, and maybe they fall in love. I really love happy endings. I better not go there though.

Our female lead is Anna, the owner of the Witch’s Brew Coffee House and Bakery. She is Aunt Polly’s niece. Yes, the Polly who gave Hugh the non-cussing potion. Yes, back to Anna. She is a witch in denial. Anna is also a very generous soul, she helps everyone, giving them free muffins and checking in on them, she is a friend to everyone. Anna is crazy busy with the cranberry festival and all the baking. Anna makes her living at the Witch's Brew but she loves photography. She also has a small trust issue when it comes to magic and relationships. Polly put cast a spell to make her and George have some fun and Anna thought she was in love until she wasn’t.

Jackson is a journalist, who was born in Everlasting. He is back to write a story exposing the unnatural things that happen in Everlasting during the Cranberry Festival. He was told that Anna would be a great photographer to hire when he arrived in town. The thing about Jackson is he knows what is right and wrong but he kind of puts his own spin on what he figures is right. Jackson is a lurker, his conscientious can leave his body and walk around listening to conversations and snooping. This is a very convenient skill for a journalist.

Polly the local witch is positively wonderful. What a great aunt. She really keeps things moving. Polly like many of the inhabitants of Everlasting has her own sense of fashion. Did I mention the bright red hair? Polly cast the spell to bring Jackson to Everlasting and now Anna can’t tell if she honestly likes him or if it is a spell.

Anna and Jackson have set out to find the person that killed George, but they may find out more about George than Anna really wanted to know. They will also have the assistance of a cursed camera and Polly of course, but don’t count on much help from the Deputies as they have other things to keep them busy. Below is my favorite quote from this book.

“I told you, either use it or don’t, but you can’t just dibble-dabble with the bibble-babble.” – Aunt Polly

This series is chalked full of interesting characters who do some of the darnedest things. I truly adore Everlasting.

My rating is 5 stars, I highly recommend this book and the series. This is the first book that I have read by Michelle M. Pillow but I look forward to reading some of her other books, as they look steamy and magical.

I will be starting the fourth book in the series, Witchful Thinking by Kristen Painter. I have read many of Kristen’s books and I am really looking forward to this one.

I love it. Anna runs a coffee shop. She is a witch that doesn't use her powers. She believes that's what killed her parents when she was little & makes her aunt Polly act like a nut. A Journalist, Jackson, who was a Childhood Everlasting, moved away when he was 10, is back in town to check on some things. He can spirit walk, leave his body & put his other part somewhere else to see things. He needs a photographer for this job & wants her to do it. She takes something to the antique shop & finds the old camera she had been trying to buy with a note on it for her. It is a little odd but she takes it anyway. She uses it at a get together for a guy's club that night. One of her friends ends up with an allergic reaction to something that kills him. The doctor calls it accidental, who would want to hurt George? The deputy (never had been to bright) concurs. Jackson is suspicious. What caused it? No one knows. He starts poking around & gets Anna looking too. The pictures she took from the camera keep changing. & they find out that George has been buying a lot of baby equipment. But as far as they knew, he had no children. He just had date after date of different girlfriends. Curious. They check on his mother Ginger, to ask her some questions & find her drunk. Anna helps her up to her room & cleans out a lot of vodka so she can sober up. Jackson finds a nursery room with over 23 pictures of babies in it. This was really getting weird. They go to leave & run into another friend on the way out. Anna tells her she doesn't need any more liquor, she is going to get alcohol poisoning. They find out he has a lot of children from many girlfriends he was going to bring to Everlasting. Some had lost their mothers or just weren't in good homes. They get to looking at the pictures again & Anna decides to claim her witch & use her powers. They go to the lodge where it had happened & with a spell they watch it replay again. It turns out it was George's date Darla. He had called her Sandra, & she followed him into the restroom. He is a werewolf, she put on silver laced lipstick & after she told him what she thought of his letting her down Then trying to take their son & calling her Sandra, she kissed him. They find his phone that had been recording at the time so they would have the proof they need to convince the deputy his shut case needs to be reopened. When they take it to him & let him know that it would be worth his while to make sure the child got to his grandmother, he got on it quick to make everyone think he was the one who found the evidence & want to reopen George's case. As things got settles down Jackson was able to get around to propose to Anna & she said yes. I love it!

This is the 3rd book in the Happily Everlasting World series by 3 authors Michelle Pillow, Jana Deleone and Mandy M. Roth. I surprised myself because I absolutely loved this G-rated paranormal romance. As much as I enjoyed Roth's contributions to the series I think this book is better. There’s definitely romance as our heroine coffee shop/bakery owner and witch in denial Anna tries to determine whether the feelings she’ having for our hero investigative reporter and spirit walker Jackson are real or the product of a spell put on them by her crazy Aunt Polly. I thought her feelings felt authentic for the situation. Between her crazy Aunt Polly and some of the other residents of Everlasting there’s plenty of humor. There’s page turning mystery and suspense as Anna and Jackson try to solve the mystery of who caused the death of one of Anna’s best friends and former lover. Can she trust what the antique camera Wilbert Messing gave her for safe keeping reveals to her? Will she accept the magic that is her birthright or continue to try and ignore it? I read several of the Roth books before reading this one. I loved how this one perfectly dove-tailed Roth’s first book in the series Twice Hunted Once Shy revealing a bit of that books characters and its plot. I’m a bit disappointed that Roth didn’t give Anna and Jackson a larger secondary role in her stories. Anna's coffee shop, The Magic Bean and her Aunt Polly play prominent roles but Anna and Jackson, not so much.
This was just a really fun, fast page turning read. As a cozy read it has no cursing and nothing steamier than kissing and implied sex. Pretty safe reading even for tweens who hear more swearing and see more sex after 9 P.M. on network television.

I enjoyed this book. The only reason it dropped a star is because there was a little bit to much focus on the romance side of the story for me, although they did make for a cute couple. I liked the characters but Aunt Polly certainly stole the show, what a hoot! Embarrassing if she was my aunt but her quirky personality makes for a great and entertaining character in the story. The mastery was unusual with the use of a camera providing clues, just as it should be for a paranormal cozy mystery, it also left you wondering what was going on. I am glad Anna finally embraced her witchy side so she could solve the mystery because up until then I had no clue. This is apparently the third book in the series but it didn't feel like it and could have easily been the start of a new series. I might have to check out the other books. A fun series to enjoy if you like weird and whacky characters with a splash of romance and a hint of mystery.
Jackson has to return to his home town to cover the Cranberry Festival, not exactly the hard hitting news story he is use too but a local death and an interesting coffee shop owner has him sticking around. Everlasting has secrets and the latest one of whether the local delivery boy was murdered has Jackson and a witch in denial working together with a special camera to find the answers. Was the play boy killer or like the police claim it was an accidental death?
I liked the narrator. At first I thought it was unusual to have a male reader for a mostly female cast but he soon won me over and he turned out perfect, especially in the roll as Aunt Polly

Fooled Around and Spelled in Love is the third book in the Happily Everlasting World by Michelle M. Pillow.

This is set up in the magical town of Everlasting where different paranormals live their daily lives, but nobody else outside of this town really knows the mysteries of this town in Maine.

Anna Crawford is a business owner in Everlasting. She owns Witch's Brew Coffee House and Bakery. She denies her magical abilities and chose to just do things like a normal person. She is very friendly, sweet, and helpful. She donates her baked goods all around town even with the Cranberry Festival, she makes time for her donations.

Jackson Argent is a reporter appointed by his boss to come to Everlasting, his hometown, to report on the mysteries of the town during the Cranberry Festival. Jackson had the ability to send his consciousness out of his body and walk around.

Anna and Jackson are working together to find out the mysteries around who may have offed George, but looking deeply may reveal more than they bargained for.

This was filled with mysteries, twists, romance, humor, and danger. This was fantastic! I absolutely love the build up and the magical aspect of this book. Michelle, I absolutely love all your books! I cannot wait to read more and more from you!

Fooled Around and Spelled in Love begin slow. Anna Crawford has her own coffee and bakery shop and an aunt, Aunt Polly who is trying to make her embrace the fact that Anna is a witch in denial.

Jackson Argent has came into Everlasting to do an article and needed a photographer. After much research, Anna was the one that he wanted to hire for his photos except Anna was not interested. Anna has a coffee and bakery shop to run and dealing with her aunt.

How Jackson and Anna met sounds like the TV series, Hart to Hart because it was murder when they met. It was also the moment when Anna has to embrace her witch heritage to find the murderer.

I didn't like the beginning of the book when Anna and Aunt Polly's relationship was introduced. I felt like both characters did not get along until Anna and Jackson started to investigate the murder of Anna's friend. Aunt Polly became the Aunt Polly I knew from the 7th book in the series. (I started reading the 7th book, Curses and Cupcakes first.)

The narrator, B.J. Harrison's performance was pretty good. It could also be the strain in Anna and Aunt Polly's relationship could have been a factor in the narration. But when Anna and Aunt Polly's relationship changed, I started to enjoy the narrator's performance. (Or it could be that in each new story in the series, the narrator is getting better and better.)

Lighthearted Reading Entertainment

Cozy Mystery
No memorable harsh language
No violence
Sex - No details, we just know it happened. Someone who's incredibly naive might not figure it out.
For Grammarians: Yes, there are a few mistakes, but nothing that makes you want to stab your book or Kindle with an icepick.

For those who haven't read the other "Happily Everlasting Series" books, the town of Everlasting is populated by many citizens with special gifts or heritage. Some may be shape shifters, others can do magic, and at least one is a ghost confined to the lighthouse and its surrounding property.
As far as I can tell, each story is written by a different author, and they must be having a great time doing this. Also, it doesn't seem like you would need to read them in order.

Plot no spoilers:
A handsome reporter, Jackson, comes to town to report on the cranberry festival. Anna, the main character, is immediately attracted to him, but fears her Aunt Polly has cast a love spell on the two of them, so is reluctant to become too involved.
This being a cozy mystery, there's a cozy (?) murder, and the two become involved in whodunit.

If you're in need of potato chips for the mind, this series is probably for you.
Enjoy

A little (possible) murder. A little mayhem (Thanks, Aunt Polly!). A little romance above the coffee shop. Oh, and a possibly cursed camera that could or could not be lying through pictures. Because curses like to confuse and confuzzle, don't they?

Anna is a witch who doesn't use her magic. Jackson is a reporter who has a very useful to his job skill set. She doesn't trust what she's feeling thanks to Polly's past misguided attempts at meddling in her love life. He...well, Jackson trusts his feelings far more than Anna does hers, but you need two to tango and Anna's fighting it.

What she doesn't fight is teaming up with Jackson to figure out what really killed one of her friends. Okay, she fights it a little. Mostly because she doesn't want to believe at first that any of the people she knows from town might be involved in murder. But she gets over that and ends up embracing her witchy side (and embracing Jackson, if you know what I mean) and these two make a good team!

Everlasting is a wacky, quirky town and I'm digging all the different adventures in it. *thumbs up*

Fooled Around and Spelled In Love is book 3 in The Happily Everlasting Series of cozy mysteries and the first by Michelle Pillow in the series. If you've ever read a book by Mrs. Pillow, you know she tends toward the fun and funny. She did not disappoint with this one.

As with Once Hunted Twice Shy, this book balances mystery with romance and adventure pretty evenly. I've seen a few reviews that criticized these two for being less than the first in the series, but my guess it's people who don't actually like romance writing those. That being said, there IS definitely romance in this book. That also being said, I enjoyed it thoroughly and loved getting to know Anna and Jackson. Their path to each other and to solving the mystery was a lot of fun. The mystery itself had a rather interesting twist.

All in all, if you like your mystery with a good dose of romance and some fun paranormal tidbits, this is totally for you!

While I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first two, it is still a really good book.

I had a hard time warming up to Anna. She's standoffish and I never really understood why she was so against magic. Same with her love interest, Jackson. His magical abilities were kind of odd.

Their romance seemed to sputter and then start back up to sputter again. The payoff felt almost rushed and forced. I do think more time needed to be devoted to developing these two characters and their romance.

This book spent more time on developing the secondary characters than it did the primary ones and that's why I lowered the rating. The focus should have been on Anna and Jackson.

The mystery was good though. I liked the way they solved it. The whole thing was interesting. The bit with the camera was underdeveloped though and I'm not sure it should have been part of the story since it didn't really seem to serve any purpose.

There were also an inordinate amount of errors.

Jackson Argent is a journalist with the ability to spirit walk. He returns to Everlasting on assignment but finds more than he planned.

Anna Crawford is a witch who suppresses her powers. She owns and runs the Witch's Brew Coffee Shop and Bakery and is a talented photographer. She's generous with time and energy but doesn't want magic to influence those around her.

When the local delivery man and charmer dies suspiciously Jackson is determined to solve the crime but he will need Anna's help.

Pillow writes a cozy, small town, paranormal mystery with unique and sometimes funny residents. The romance was easy and light, I didn't really fill much depth but it was a nice read, that often brought a smile.

I've enjoyed this series so far, and this book is no exception. This is the third book in the Happily Everlasting series, a set of cozy paranormal mysteries, each written by a different author with the same town and many of the same characters in common. The town is full of supernaturals who try to shield who they are from the outside world. This book centers around Anna Crawford; 'witch-in-denial', owner of a coffee shop and bakery called the Witch's Brew, her Aunt Polly (loved Polly!) and an investigative reporter, Jackson Argent. mysteriously assigned to cover the towns annual, month-long cranberry festival. The story is good, the characters are likeable, and now I really want a cup of coffee and some cranberry orange scones! If you like stories with paranormal themes, humor, well-done characters and a good mystery, you'll enjoy this book.

Everlasting, Maine, is a town full of a wide variety of supernatural people. Anna Crawford owns the Witch’s Brew Coffee Shop and is a witch, but chooses not to use her gifts. Her Aunt Polly, who is absolutely and undeniably proud of her heritage as a witch, calls Anna a witch in denial. Polly is wonderful - flamboyant, outspoken, and a delightfully hilarious character. Jackson Argent has a gift that comes in quite handy in his job as a reporter. Charlotte and Jackson are quickly attracted to each other. When the police do not pursue the case, these two work together to solve the mystery of who killed a local man and why. Will they find the answers? Will their attraction turn into something truly magical? An interesting story with a cast of entertaining characters. Great narration by B. J. Harrison.

This is book 3 in the Happily Everlasting World series by several authors and therefore each can be read / listened to as a standalone. I found this to be a delight to listen to! Well written and good narration. This is a paranormal romance or cozy mystery that is captivating from start to finish. A lighthearted listen that transports you into this crazy town you won't be able to help but falling in love with yourself.
Our main characters are Anna and Jackson. Anna is a witch who refuses to use her magic and Jackson is a reporter who finds himself compelled to return to his childhood home of Everlasting. Loved the murder mystery and the twists that kept the killer's identity secret till the end.

Being as this is part of a series, you don’t have to have read the previous books. The books are written by several different authors and this story, by Michelle M. Pillow, takes place in a magical town in Maine. All the main characters are well written, and are likeable. Our main character, Anna Crawford, is the magical heroine, who doesn’t use magic. She meets reporter Jackson Argent, who has been sent to cover a festival taking place in the town. A friend of Anna’s is found dead, and this sets the story into motion. This is a fun book to read, and I’m going to go back and read the others in the series. I received an ARC from the author through BookSprout, and this is my honest opinion.

3.5 * rounding up.
That was fun. I don’t feel like anything particular happened in it, but it was an enjoyable way to while away a couple hours. The villain was a complete surprise to me, but I think that was mostly because we learned nothing about that character until the Big Reveal. Anna and Jackson are pretty cute together, and I liked seeing her finally break through her mental block over her magic. I just would have liked to have seen her going through more of the steps towards acceptance. It kind of felt like she went from hating it to overusing it in an instant. However, I’m charmed by the quirky citizens of Everlasting, Maine, and I can’t wait to see what trouble they all get into next.

I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook. This was a fun mystery with a lot of likable characters, some of them nutty like Anna's Aunt Polly, whom I loved. Anna owns a bakery, where her aunt often gets up to some hijinks with her magic. She used her magic to get the reporter Jackson to come to town. He and Anna have a sweet romance as they look into her friend George's death, which the police refuse to investigate. I really liked how the mystery was solved and how the story ended.
I enjoyed BJ Harrison's narration. He read with good expression and I liked the characters' voices and how the story was brought to life.

This is Anna and Jackson's story and I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline. Anna is a witch who doesn't use her powers, at least not until it is necessary. She also owns a bakery. Jackson is a reporter with a supernatural power as well. He is originally in town to cover the Cranberry festival but everything changes when George, a friend of Anna's dies under mysterious circumstances. There is fowl play afoot and a mystery to solve as well as romance if Jackson can convince Anna that their feelings are real and not part of some spell Anna's aunt Polly cast. I love all the oddball characters in Anna's home town and I know you will too. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
