Drop-dead gorgeous…and fatal.
Ollie Dormier's tattoos are deadly. She is a Scrivener—an employee for Death—and her skull tattoos mark her clients for their demise. She does her job, and she stays out of trouble. But when her hands start to burn hot and fierce, and her control goes leaping out the window, all hell breaks loose. Ollie is showing the early signs of being a Master...demonstrating power that is forbidden.
That power is exactly what Reaper Brent Hume is counting on. A hot, scruffy rebel, who does marvelous and terrifying things to Ollie's insides. Now he needs Ollie's help—and her skills—to overthrow the evil and corrupt Head Reaper. That is, if he can figure out a way to keep this hot-handed girl cool...and keep his hands off.
Abigail Baker shares her home with a Siamese cat endearingly named “The Other Cat” and two rescued mutts with mundane human names that people think are cute. In addition to writing about rebellious heroines, she enjoys hiking, discovering craft beers, baking the perfect vanilla bean cupcake, and rock climbing (going as far as scaling 800 vertical feet to the summit of Devil’s Tower National Monument in 2013).
Abigail won first place in RWA’s Golden Network’s 2011 Golden Pen in Paranormal Romance for Tattoo of Your Name Across My Soul, the book now known as The Reaper’s Kiss (Deathmark Book One). She regularly blogs about life observances at abigailbakerbooks.com, lives at the base of the Rocky Mountains, and can be easily found hiking any of Colorado’s best trails.
This was an interesting read. It takes a little getting used to though. There is a LOT of character building, describing the world and those within it. But the good news is that once you feel like you have a grasp of it, the story really starts to pick up and you find yourself intrigued enough to find out what's gonna happen next.
Olivia "Ollie" Dormier is a Scrivener. What's that? Basically a tattoo artist that has a specific "brand" that acts as a deathmark on humans. This deathmark helps Reapers find the humans they are responsible for taking souls to the afterlife. Unfortunately, Ollie was forced to put a deathmark on one of her only human friends. Why? Because apparently she exhibits signs of being a Master Scrivener. Someone who can take down the Head Reaper himself. Years ago, most of the Master Scrivener's were killed off, and now that she's exhibiting these behaviors, it seems like everyone is after her. At least one person is after her for a better reason than to kill her.
Brent Hume is a Reaper. He's not just any Reaper though. He's a rebel who doesn't agree with the way the Head Reaper "runs his business" so to speak. Brent knows that Ollie could be a Master Scrivener and is doing everything in his power to get her to join him in his rebellion. But in order to get her to agree, she has a few rules herself.
Why didn't I give a longer description of Brent? Because if I did, it would ruin a lot of the book for you. So I won't. You'll just have to read it to understand. But I will say this...once we learn a little more about him and the rebellion, you'll be drawn in to the story just as I was. And the ending. Although not a full pledge cliffhanger, will leave you wondering, "what's next". Glad I don't have to wait too long to find out. I'm off to see what's next....
*I received this book from the Jeep Diva in exchange for my honest opinion.
First book in Abigail Baker's Deathmark series. I really wanted to like this book. I love the premise; different classes of reapers, scriveners who mark the soon to be dead people with a tattoo each unique to them and the reapers themselves who collect the souls, then you have Eidolon who police everyone and the Head Reaper. It's a unique idea but for me the storyline fell flat.
Ollie is an unsuspecting hero, she was just trying to live her life and stay under the radar until her powers as a scrivener starts to show that she is on the verge of becoming a Master Scrivener; and that's bad. Head Reaper not long ago tried to wipe out the master scriveners. It is known that only a Master Scrivener can give him a deathmark and an eidolon to take his soul. Unable to control her powers Ollie gets the attention of the Head Reaper and his Eidolon Chad. Here to help her is Reaper Brent Hume, a disgraced reaper and a rebel. He knows of Ollie's growing powers and wants her to be the scrivener to mark the Head Reaper so he can farey his soul. One thing leads to another and Ollie and Brent are on the run and meeting up with other rebels to end Head Reaper Marin's tyranny.
One thing about this book is that I could not connect with Ollie or Brent. The attraction was instantaneous, and that fine with me, but it went from blushes and heart fluttering to I hate you to lets have sex and then I love you. There didn't seem to be much substance in their romance. It had little things here and there but to me there is something missing in their love story. The action sequences felt rushed and short for the exception of the very last one. The ending predictable, not spoiling anything but it's not a cliffhanger but leaves the barn doors way open for the following book. I may or may not read it sometimes it takes until book two to really get good.

If you ever meet tattoo artist Olivia Dormier, don't ask for a skull tattoo of any kind. If you do, you'll then receive one of her Deathmarks, which means Death, a.k.a. a grim reaper will be coming for you soon. Ollie is a scrivener, her skull tattoos mark people when it's their time to die. Which allows their assigned grim reaper to find them and ferry them to the other side.
Ollie isn't your run-of-the-mill scrivener though. She's been showing signs of being a Master, beings who were killed off during the Purge because Head Reaper Marin was afraid of their power. Although she tries her best to control it, her ability has Marin sending in an Eidolon (ferrymen of Reapers and Scriveners) to catch her using her heat. Chad, the Eidolon, forces her into giving her best friend, Eve, a skull tattoo. That is when she starts thinking of rebelling with the help of a 'lumbersexual' stranger named Brent.
Wow, I was honestly surprised by The Reaper's Kiss. As a fan of Rachel Vincent's YA Soul Screamers series, I had a feeling I would like it, but I enjoyed the hades out of this book! Such imaginative characters! Some of the depictions of the Eidolons in their wraith-like form made it seem as if I were reading a horror novel. Being a fan of horror, that was a good component.
I felt like mentioning Eve's mother was unnecessary, unless there is a short story involving Eve that I don't know about. Around the middle of the book, the excitement started to dwindle a little bit, but then I was right back to racing through the paragraphs. Brent's selfless act at the end was one of my favorite scenes, but I think reading those last few sentences was the best part because it makes me think there's going to be a second book and I'm really hoping for that.
Recommended to fans of Paranormal Romance and maybe even New Adult!
Ollie and Brent have chemistry and Brent can be an animal at times and that was really hot, "I fully trusted this Reaper. So I pulled my top over my head. He released a strange but contented growl..." Ollie, I swear that girl is bi-polar and Brent sometimes reminds her of the moods she has, "that yellow gaze was on me. “An hour ago, you called me a lying sack of ***t with rat testicles for balls.” I liked this book Brent was sexy, Ollie was feisty perfect match.
I fell in love with this book instantly because of the cover. It is amazingly awesome. I knew I had to read it. Then of course, I knew I had to jump into it after reading that there would be a romance with a Reaper. Yes, please!
WHAT I LIKED
The plot. It was so unique. The idea of some of the Head Reaper’s employees, Scriveners and Reapers, starting a rebellion to take him out because of his corrupt and evil ways was really enjoyable. I loved it. And I really enjoyed watching how it played out. You see Ollie as a Scrivener whose skull tattoos mark her clients for death and she does her job and keeps her head down. But different circumstances lead her to the oh-so-sexy Reaper, Brent, and she begins to question everything and wonder if rebelling is the way to go. And it was exciting to witness her journey on this crazy path she chooses.
The romance. I loved Ollie and Brent’s relationship. Ollie is hot, as you can see from the cover. Brent has this sexy southern, lumberjack thing going on, and I couldn’t get enough of him. I was so captivated by their romance. It was hot and sexy but also sweet at the same time. It was definitely my favorite part of the book. Yeah, it was kind of on and off at first, with Ollie pushing him away one moment but then wanting him desperately the next, but who cares? That happens to the best of us all the time! I see Ollie as this independent person, so when Brent comes into the picture, it’s hard for her to let him in and rely on him a little. I think it made the relationship more realistic, and even hotter when things finally get going.
Ollie’s parents. Okay, there were so many awesome secondary characters in this book, but I absolutely loved her parents. They’re so cute together, but then they have this tough protective side to them. I wish there were more scenes of them. You see her dad as this big, overprotective man who would do anything for his daughter, but I see this soft, teddy bear side to him. And while her mom seems like this sweet lady, you can tell she is really the strong, brave one. I loved them.
The ending. Oh, the ending! It was perfect. And it’s hard to explain further without giving anything away, but let’s just say that I was SO close to giving this book five hearts just because of that ending. Complete perfection. Flawless.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
I wanted more Ollie and Brent scenes! Yes, the romance was a little fast-paced, but I didn’t really mind that. I just wanted MORE of them. This storyline is so big and action-packed that it can tower over the romance. I wanted more equal “air-time” between the two.
Ollie has this friendship with a human named Eve, but I didn’t really see the connection. I wanted more of their past, things they did together, how they became close. I just think their friendship is a big part of the storyline, but it was hard to feel any emotions toward Eve because I felt like I didn’t know her. There should be more background information there, even if it was just in some flashbacks.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
Such a good book! I laughed, I almost cried, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I cannot wait for the next book, especially because of that awesome ending that I’m still recovering from. And I need more Brent in my life, please! Like right now. Like I’m going to go back and just read all the scenes involving Brent because I’m a bit obsessed. Thank you Abigail Baker for creating this awesome character and this incredible book. I will be impatiently waiting for the next one!

Being a Scrivener means that Ollie Dormier’s tattoos are deadly and like any good employee she tries to stay out of trouble but she’s showing signs of being a master and that is forbidden in this death defying paranormal romance.
Brent Hume is a rebel and he’s counting on Ollie’s power to overthrow the evil and corrupt Head Reaper and the reader can’t help but get caught up in all the thrills and chills as Brent and Ollie try to stay ahead of the all the reapers on their tail. There is a smoldering attraction between Brent and Ollie but he’s a rebel that’s been hurt in the past so the relationship is slow building but passionate and of course being hunted doesn’t help matters. The characters are strong compelling and grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning while the steady to fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on their toes with lots of suspense, thrills and romance.
With Ollie’s hands burning hot and fierce and the Head Reaper being so evil and ruthless things escalates into a deadly game of chase with excitement and tensions building throughout the story. The scenes are well written and paint vivid images that makes it easy for the reader to picture each and every scene well enough to send chills down your spine in some of the situations while the intriguing events guarantee that the reader wants to know everything that happens.
The story starts off a little on the slow side but the world is fascinatingly clever and complex with lots of interesting elements and quite a bit different from others that I have read, so in this case the slower beginning kind of ensnares you and before you know it you are on a thrilling ride as you become completely caught up in all the excitement. Although the story is a little on the dark side, I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
An Arc copy was provided to me by NetGalley in an exchange for an honest review. Full review to come. Great book, loved the character development. The author does a great job in making the characters believable. Looking forward to reading more of their work
I read this book over the course of roughly 2.5 hours while waiting in lines and doctors' offices, and it's not like I regret having read it because it was better than staring at walls while I waited, but this isn't a very solidly crafted story. Absolutely nobody's motives make any sense.
I found the premise intriguing, and I really liked the fascist government/rising unrest that was going on in the background. However, the dynamics of that government, and how it came to be, and why no one can do anything about it even though just about everyone doesn't like it, are very poorly explained.
The relationship between Brent and Ollie was also confusing. I get that they find each other physically attractive, but pretty much overnight they're willing to die for each other, not just for the rebellion but for each other, even though there is literally nothing but the rebellion and a one night stand holding them together. and all of this in spite of some serious (but also confusing) emotional baggage that they don't address.
I'd be willing to let a lot of that slide because this book is marketed as romance and rapid, senseless love is a hallmark of the genre, but almost every one of Ollie's actions doesn't seem to be based in logic. As soon as she gets upset, she bumbles around and makes the first terrible decision that pops into her head. Some of the other characters do that too, but most of them you can see where their bad decision was born of unstable emotions, a lack of good options, or dedication to a questionable cause. Ollie's purpose in the book seems to be to do whatever is necessary to propel the plot along, though, even if that next step isn't logical or in keeping with her character.
But still, I picked this book up for fluff reading to kill time, and because it was free on Amazon. I wouldn't be a very harsh critic normally. What really gets me though, is the ending. You want to talk about motives that make no sense, read the end of this book. Ollie's responses to Brent and her mother are so discordant it's actually uncomfortable to read. Brent's "solution" to their final problem does save Ollie's life but what a weird bargain to make, and weirder still for the Head Reaper to accept the bargain, and weirdest of all, the author writes that scene like it's the only logical conclusion other than death. The scene between Ollie and the Head Reaper in the cell came out of left field so completely that it felt gratuitous, and the whole "join us" argument makes no sense; they don't need her or have any real use for her, and if they do, the author should've explained that before making the plot hinge on her decision.
If it weren't for the ending, I could have called this a mildly pleasant, brainless, waiting room read. I just can't get over the randomness of the decisions or the lack of closure.
I received a copy of this book, from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. In no way did this sway either my review or my rating!
I'm having very mixed feelings about The Reaper's Kiss upon finishing it. On the one hand it was a brilliant and unique storyline and so many things within that blurb had me highly intrigued and desperately wanting to get my hands on it and see what it was all about. On the other hand while I still feel like it was all of those things, but some of the execution of the story fell flat for me.
One of the most interesting draws to this book were the Scriveners. The idea that these supernatural types tattoo their mark on you and you can kiss your soul goodbye. It was fascinating how these people would unknowingly feel the pull to wander into their shop and get marked. I wondered how difficult it would be tattooing someone knowing that it meant their death. Could I handle doing something like that? It was crazy to think of. Though the gist I got from Ollie was that the majority of the people that sat in her chair were lowlife's who didn't deserve a second thought. But still...
I absolutely love a good story where there's a fascist government and a rebellion stirring in the otherwise seemingly devoted people of said government. Plotting and planning and desiring to take down the dictator like leader and bring a more peaceful and harmonious life to their people. This book had all of those things, but that's where the execution wavered for me. Part of the time I was saying yes, yes, yes! And the rest I was running my hand over my face with a heavy sigh.
Sometimes it was hard to look past some if it's more lackluster moments. Ollie, every so often, came off very much like a petulant child. Everything had to be done her way. Upon meeting a new group of rebels for the very first time, after being told she was needed and being asked if she would help them, her response was basically my way or the highway. Especially when her question back was "Will you do everything I say?" I mean, that's it? These people didn't know her or what she was truly capable of the rumor of her has basically just been passed around and instantly they're just suppose to follow her orders without even a "here's my plan" or "here are some ideas I have". Nope it's just do as I say or I don't need you I'll go do it alone.
The other big thing that had me questioning my feelings towards this book was the romance. Now I am all for romance. You dangle a ship in my face and I am all over that. And I do ship Ollie and Brent. I ship them hard. But I felt like this amazing story kept getting taken over by Brent, Ollie and their uncontrollable hormones. Things went up in flames way, way too fast in my opinion when they knew basically nothing about one another. This is a series. So it seems as if there's going to be plenty of time to develop a romance between them am I right? A nice and amazing slow burn that by the time it finally ignites, a couple books in at least, you feel that "finally!" feeling because the rest of the story was the bigger pull. Is that what we get? No...Hello insta-love. Sigh.
I think that's what makes this whole thing so difficult for me. Because I am completely hooked already. Like I desperately want the next book to be in my hands so I can see what happens next, because that ending...It's going to be maddening having to wait! So I'm trying hard to look past the whole insta-love thing because there's no question that I will be continuing with this series.
My final verdict? Pretty good, but it could have been freaking amazing with just a couple tweaks. And how long until book two? *Bites nails in anticipation*
Thanks to Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book!
There was something about this book that felt original and fresh. Abigail is an excellent storyteller but whilst I really enjoyed this book it took a while to warm up and pull me in. Once hooked however it was hard to put down
In a troubled world Ollie has a gift and together with rebel Brent a chance to restore 'balance'. There are some who help and others who try to stop them. When one thing leads to another a hot and unlikely romance develops with rebel reaper Brent. I enjoyed the way the characters and her gift (which originally felt more like curse) developed as the story progressed. Her "hands burning hot with fury" may seem like a strange gift but is well both integrated into and key to the story.
The story itself is very engaging and well told mixing first person narrative with chatty prose. The characters are interesting and well developed. I liked Ollie she was easy to relate to and despite her calling had a really human side. I liked Brent the reaper too which surprised me. Dudley her dog was a nice touch and an excellent contrast to the dark forces at hand. The "marvellous and terrifying things" Brent does to Ollie's insides feel original and add spice.
The book whilst obviously a paranormal romance is also about people and the importance of family, friends and relationships. In particular when faced with difficult choices the importance of overcoming your fears and stepping up to protect not only your own interests, family and friends but those of the plebs too.
The quality of the writing is good which is no surprise Abigail having won first place in RWA’s Golden Network’s 2011 Golden Pen in Paranormal Romance for TATTOO OF YOUR NAME ACROSS MY SOUL now published as The Reaper's Kiss. The book has lots offer in both in terms of plot and hot romance. The first of a series; I liked the ending which fitted the story well and left plenty of scope for the next book which is planned for release in June 2016.
In reflection I loved this book which is very different and far removed from most of the fiction I have read recently. The decision to read this book was pure impulse having spotted it by chance online. There was something about the combination of deadly tattoos and the grim reaper which attracted me and reminded me of the many hours spent watching SyFi Channel with my children.
Highly recommended.

Review:
Well crap, I was not ready for that to end. Such a fresh take on Death, Reapers and that whole world. I was hooked from the beginning. I don't think I have read anything quite like it before. Usually with first books it seems like most of it full of world building and they are a little slow, Not this one! The action and drama pretty much starts from the very first page. I enjoyed the action, the rebels on the run and the whole let's overthrow the bad guys, it was intriguing and kept me on the edge trying to figure out what is going to happen. There were lots of sad moments for me too, like when Eve dies and other people that are close to Ollie. I really hope there is some kind of resolve to Eve's soul, her being trapped in the necklace is driving me nuts...lol I liked Ollie. As the feisty, reluctant face of the rebellion, she is a strong female character. I thought her and Brent's chemistry was good, though at times it seemed to be thrown in just to move the story along. I thought the baddies Chad and Marin were very well-done and very bad. Will have to see what the next book brings since this does not have a resolution at the end of the story. It is the first book in a continuing storyline so be prepared.
I really enjoyed this new and unique story and cannot wait for the next one.
4Stars
*Received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.*
Let me start by saying that I don't read a lot of romance, so this book is a bit of a departure for me. A fun, rompy, satisfying departure. I definitely plan to depart again when the next book comes out.
I'll assume that you've read the publisher's plot summary already and won't rehash everything. Suffice to say that Ollie starts out following the rules, but in short order finds herself consorting with rebels (in all sorts of ways).
I really enjoyed the writing and pacing of the story. The writing is light and humorous, and events move along quickly, without leaving the reader feeling rushed. I didn't see the end coming, although there were hints along the way that I might have picked up if I'd read more carefully (more on that later).
I also really enjoyed Ollie: she's smart, funny, and has her own opinions. There's a real progression through the story as she begins coming into her own, examining her own needs and priorities. I always enjoy seeing that.
The story is told from Ollie's POV, so obviously I get the best sense of her character. Sexy Brent remains a bit of a mystery, and I kind of like that.
One problem I did have--and this may be because I read too quickly--is that some of the ways Ollie's world works are confusing to me. I may need to go back and re-read sections to figure them out, because they're interesting.
Still, those were pretty minor complaints, and I really did enjoy the book. Well worth a read, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal story. (I wouldn't necessarily limit it to romance readers....)
I'll never look at a tattooist the same- ever. Because in here, but the the tattoo is what calls a reaper for your death. Ollie is a scrivener and her scull tattoo has an extra powerful punch. It's a deathmark and you won't be around for long. And the head reaper Marin will make sure you keep up with quotas on a threat worse than death. This is a cool story and has quite a lot of very unique lore surrounding reapers.
Ollie keeps her head down and follows rules. She knows things aren't exactly right but she isn't gunna stick her nose in that. She has her own issue with her hands heating up when she works. She's heard rumors about masters who had this problem and they were all slaughtered for it. So she is extra vigilant to keep this to herself. Until reaper Brent walked into her life. And then chaos ensues.
With Brent, who's both sweet and scary, his southern drawl, his lists of rebel contacts who want to overthrow Marin and her awesome dog Dudley, Ollie finds herself at a cross roads and a beautiful journey. The bad guys are even scarier and it's no longer just her life at stake. And along the way she and Brent find more than just companionship but a world worth living for.
This is a fascinating world the author built. There's a lot more than just reapers with so many levels of things and powers. The suspense was great. The romance was sweet. The bad guys were extra scary. And the loss was heart wrenching. I bought is was a fun read and it was very unique in terms of reaper lore. I loved that. The writing is well done and there's a great little twist with some self sacrifices that blew my mind. And just when I thought it was over, the ending had me begging for more. I really hope there's another book to follow. Seriously! So with that, a very exciting 4.5 PAWS!!
**A gifted copy was provided by the publisher for my honest review**** Olivia Dormier’s day job is as a tattoo artist and when you ask for a skull tattoo of any kind, that means you receive one of her Deathmarks and you are marked for Death and the Grim Reaper will be coming for you very soon Olivia is special, she is known as a scrivener and her skull marks make it where the assigned grim reapers are able to find the people she marked , find them and take them from one side to the other side. Now, she isn’t just the regular scrivener though, she is showing all the signs of being a Master – those beings who were killed off during the Purge by those who were afraid of the power. Olivia has tried to control what is going on in her body but the power has become too great and because of that, Head Reaper Marin is sending in an Eidolon which are known as the ferryman to catch her using her heat. This is where we meet Brent. Chad came off as a jerk, made her do things that she didn’t want to do. Like bringing in her friend Eve and making her a pawn in this power struggle. She meets a stranger named Brent and the chemistry between them was fantastic. There was action, there was treachery, there was a tremendous selfless act at the very end that brought me to tears which I truly hope means we will see a book 2 so there is a hope we will see what happens between Olivia and Brent- that there is HEA between them because the story doesn’t leave with even a HFN ending. There is a bad guy in this story and I hope he gets his –the strength of Olivia is great and the courage of Brent is wonderful…this is a good story, I just did not understand why the story ended the way it did—there was not even a HFN ending. I did like the story and how it played out, I just did not like the ending. I am hoping with how it ended, there is a book2 coming our way.
I LOVED this book! I always love finding a good reaper story, and I was most definitely not disappointed with this one. From start to finish Abigail Baker had me sucked into the world that is Ollie Dormier, and boy is it one hell of a ride.
Ollie is a Scrivener who is a whole hell of a lot more powerful than she thinks she is. She knows that she has some problems keeping her powers under control, but that happens sometimes with Scriveners who are just starting out right? Ollie soon realizes just how wrong she is.
When she first meets Brent Hume, Ollie can’t help but notice how ruggedly gorgeous he is. However, once she realizes he’s a Reaper that just so happens to show up after she made a huge mistake, Ollie starts to panic. Why is it that all the hot ones have to be so out of reach? But after Brent helps her get out of a few tight spots, she starts to see him in a different light.
Not too long after these two meet, they’re on the run from the head Reaper. Ollie is a wanted woman, but she’s the key to have their whole world go to the way it’s supposed to be. But once the head Reaper starts to play dirtier than she expected, Ollie tries her best to save those she loves.
Ollie and Brent have one hell of a road ahead of them, one that may just take them in different ways. Will these two be able to accomplish their goals, and see where these growing feelings for each other lead them? Or are they ripped apart and lose everything they tried to accomplish?
I CAN’T WAIT FOR BOOK 2! Seriously, I need that book now! I can’t wait to see what Abigail has in store for Brent and Ollie! I would say this is a definite must read for those of you who are paranormal lovers!
**ARC was provided through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
As a fan of grim reaper based novels, I knew I had to grab The Reaper’s Kiss when it popped up on my Netgalley list. Baker has delivered an interesting and unique tale. Ollie is part unsuspecting hero and harbinger of death. Her dystopian and urban fantasy world is filled with unique creatures of the death variety. Her normal day job of death marking victims with her beautiful skull tattoos turns into suspicion and a life on the run. Add in fallen rebel Brent and you’ve got a hot little story with the right balance of paranormal and romance.
As much as I liked the unique premise of this book, I did have some dislikes. I felt like Ollie and Brent’s relationship was a bit rushed and at times unbelievable. Once their lives hit the boiling point, they go from teetering on the edge of romance to full blown passionate love. The only other portion of the story that felt off to be was the beginning was a bit slow and didn’t immediately catch my attention like I would have liked.
Dislikes aside, The Reaper’s Kiss is complex and unique enough that for most fans the aforementioned dislikes won’t seem as bad. Baker has a knack for writing vivid imagery to the point you feel as if you’re watching the story unfold on TV rather than reading words on a page. As the story progresses, the ending throws you for a loop and will leave you wanting more. I honestly can’t wait to dive into the next installment. I have also gone back to the drawing board about a tattoo idea for me. No skulls!

Ollie, whose nickname I love because it's my beloved furry four-legged baby boy's nickname as well, was such a kick-ass heroine, someone whose transformation was a thrill to read. She's courageous yet isn't afraid to show that she still experiences moments of doubt or fear. She's loving and loyal, especially to those who mean the most to her, and when she lets you in, she's more than willing to put everything on the line. She's tenacious and while she leads with her heart, she also listens to her head, making her a young woman who is already well-balanced even as she continues to find her foothold in a chaotic environment.
The book ends in a cliffhanger of sorts because we don't really get much of a resolution as to the rebellion and to Ollie and Brent's relationship. I have no clue when the sequel is set for release, but suffice it to say that it's already on my to-be-read list. Abigail Baker has created an intriguing story and an interesting set of lead characters, all of which you become invested in, and this urban fantasy series appears to be one that is on the brink of becoming a favorite. I'm highly recommending you check out The Reaper's Kiss as soon as you can because I really do feel that it'll be worth your time. This 2015 favorite gets five-plus stars. ♥
Well, this was interesting. I don’t read many Fantasy stories, so this one was a nice surprise.
We have Ollie and Brent, two rebels who have to fight the Head Reaper (a huge ass, btw), to restore order to the world. Ollie is very reluctant to become a rebel, which makes sense when you see how other rebels are treated.
The story had a lot of ups and downs, a lot of action (which I loved) and some romantic moments here and there. I liked a lot of things about the story, however, to be honest, I found the romantic side of this story to be the weakest in the book. Yeah, Ollie and Brent spent a lot of time together, but other than physical attraction, I didn’t see much of a connection between these two. Which is why I didn’t really feel it when they shared their ILYs. I don’t know, there was some connection between the two of them, but to me, it wasn’t enough. I did feel sorry for them when they were captured (OMG, poor Brent), and I really wanted them to be set free together, mostly ‘cause that’s when I started to feel a deeper connection between the two of them. Something that I look forward to see develop in the next books.
The story doesn’t end exactly on a cliffy, however, it IS open to more in the future. There is a lot more to cover here and I’d like to see how things work out for Ollie and Brent.

This was an interesting take on Reapers. Ollie is a tattoo artist that puts death marks on those intended for death. It might make you rethink asking for a skull. Since she isn't your typical scrivener she ends up getting into a bit of trouble when she tattoos a guy with a skull.
She ends up getting sucked into a battle against Marin the guy in charge of everyone. He's a tyrant and there are rebels that want to knock him out of power but there's only one way to take out this guy. I really like Ollie. She seems like she'd be fun to hang out and I adored her dog Dudley. Also you gotta love a girl that names her gun.
There was some romance in this book. I'm just glad it didn't overpower the book like it can in some books. Even if you aren't a romance fan you'd probably like this book if you're into all things paranormal. This was a easy read. I was able to get into it very easily. It was a smooth ride from start to finish but the same can't be said about the characters. I get the feeling that this is part of a series. I seem to have a knack for finding series or maybe my theory about stand alone books going extinct is true. Maybe someone should start putting together a commercial for them and while at it think about symbolically adopting me. I will keep an eye out for other books by Abigail.
I enjoyed this book! I was instantly drawn to Baker's unique take on the Reaper world and the Stygian citizens and their hierarchy. I'm not going to rehash the plot because there's enough reviews that do that, but I will share what I loved and what I didn't love as much. It's an easy read with a fun road trip (as fun as it gets when you're on the LAM with a hot reaper) into the States and back to Quebec. The main characters, Ollie and Brent are likable and intriguing, and by the end of the book I really find myself rooting for them.
Surprisingly, I didn't find myself instantly attracted the the rebellion movement and the revolution theme here, for some reason it didn't connect with me enough that the Stygians are being ruled by a tyrant. There was also a death or two that could have resonated deeper with me, and perhaps this just comes down to not getting a chance to know the secondary characters well enough. That being said, the pacing was fast, the action was tense, and the romance, while secondary, was hot!
I'm looking forward to getting to know the world more in Book 2, and seeing more of Ollie's powers come to life. I'm also a huge sucker for the "look but can't touch" romances in novels, so I NEED to find out what happens to Ollie and Brent. Book 2 can come.
I loved the cover of this book and I was instantly drawn to it. I've been a fan of Reapers, I loved Dead Like Me. One of my favorite shows ever! So naturally when I found out what this book was about, I had to read it.
We have Olivia aka Ollie who is a scrivener. She tattoos skulls on people's bodies, when they come into the shop. Which means those people will die very soon. Ollie has a power she doesn't understand and one that could get her killed.
She meets Brent, he wants her to help him, to rebel against Marin and bring back order to Styx.
This was written so well, I really loved this world. Ollie is such a strong kick ass female character. At first she's scared but she realizes that she'd do anything to help those she loves. Even if that makes her a rebel!
This was new and fresh. One of the best books I've read this year, in this genre. The story kept me Interested and I wanted to finish. Then I finished and now I want to read more. So now I must wait for #2 in the series!...Lissa
First off, I want to send out huge kudos to the author. I love when authors start to think outside the box and give us something completely new. I was pulled into this story from the very first page and stayed up into the late hours to get it finished. The whole story was a new one for me and I didnt know if I would actually enjoy it but I did. Ollie's character is strong and formidable and I love how she has an "issue" as she see's it. I found myself liking her more and more as the author spun the story driving me deeper into the world of reapers and deathmarks. Brent is the odd Reaper, I loved his swagger and way with everything. That sweet loving charm worked its way even to me. Cannot wait for the next book.
4 Star Book Review | The Reaper’s Kiss By Abigail Baker | Giveaway
I gave The Reaper's Kiss a 4 STAR rating. I loved this unique take on the business of Death. "Death doesn't like bartering." We see this very clearly as the story goes along. I loved seeing Ollie become a leader in her own right and stand up for what's best not only for herself but also the people of Styx. I would have liked a bit more romancy-like moments between Ollie and Brent, but their strong connection is still brought forth in a way that makes sense. I can't wait to read the next book in this series, especially after that awesome ending.
The story had a lot of ups and downs, a lot of action, sadness and some romantic moments here and there. I liked a lot of things about the story, however, I found the romantic side of this story to be a bit lacking. Yeah, Ollie and Brent are together a lot, but other than the physical stuff, I didn’t see a deeper connection. This book did have be emotional though and sometimes I felt that I was sitting at the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.
It seems that there is more to look forward to in the future, and I will certainly be reading her future work. Overall it was a very good book and I will recommend it to my reader friends!
*I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review.*
I received this from Netgalley/ Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This is a paranormal read based on the world of Death. In this book, you have Scriveners, employees of Death that put Death marks on the clients so that Reapers can find them and take them to Hades. However, the death realm is not working how it should. The Head Reaper is corrupt and Ollie is recruited to lead the rebellion. The idea I guess was good but I did not love Ollie she was way to odd for me. The story was okay but slow for me. It took me awhile to get into this book. Just not a huge fan.
I liked the power that Ollie possessed and that when it come down to her friend Eve, she had second thoughts on what she was told to do. There were moments this book had an air of the horror element.
The story between Brent and Ollie was not overpowering and very enjoyable. I would read a second book if the author decided to grace us with it.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun book that I was a little skeptical of at first. Marking for death with a tattoo machine? But it works. This was well-written and romantic with some heart wrenching tied in. It was a fun world and I can't wait to read the next one!
