Am un crocodil sub pat

Rate this book

A simple and straightforward little story with humor to read before bedtime. I love this story.

We meet this boy who tells us there used to be an alligator under his bed. We then see his routine of putting up a board so he can walk up this ramp and get safely in bed. That alligator is sneaky and his parents can’t see it. He then empties the kitchen to make a trail of food to the garage for the alligator to follow. It works.

Mercer Mayer is an amazing talent. The artwork pops with color and the story is exciting on a beginning level.

The nephew thought this book was exciting. He just knew the alligator was going to eat his parents or something. He thought the boy was smart too. If all the food in our house ends up on the floor leading out the door, we’ll know he took this literally. He liked the story and he gave this 4 stars. He also read it to me. He’s becoming such a good reader. I’m so proud.

I honestly think I liked this book most for its insight into a child’s mind. Children’s minds truly work this way, they do these things and they believe that there is a monster of some kind under their bed. I liked however, that there was a surprise. There was an alligator under the child’s bed, at least according to him. As an adult aged reader, that was a surprise to me, but to a child reader I bet this was no surprise at all, of course the alligator came out to get food! Obviously, due to the assignment this is a primary age appropriate read. The vocabulary is not particularly difficult, and there is only a small amount of text on each page. The illustrations reminded me of a coloring book, thicker black lines created the image and then the colors on the page filled them in. The colors of the images were darker, which helped express that it was night time in the story. The little boy and his red pajamas stand out against the bed time setting. There is no solid moral to the story; however it is a good lesson in imagination. In the classroom it could be used to spur a discussion about imagination, and whether or not the students think the alligator was real. This book is highly relatable, so students could also talk about an experience they had when they were younger and believed there was something hiding out under their bed. All together the story line is interesting, and the coloring book-like drawings are visually appealing. It was a pretty good read and can be used in a classroom in multiple ways.

I enjoyed There's an Alligator Under My Bed much more than There's a Nightmare in My Closet . Rather than resorting to physical violence to deal with the bedtime threat, the child uses his intelligence and comes up with a way to lure the alligator out of his bedroom. (Sure, now there's an alligator in the garage... but that's Dad's problem!)

This is a simple book from a simpler time. It deals with bedtime fears in a charming and entertaining way. The illustrations are similar to those in There's a Nightmare in My Closet, and though I like them a little more here, that may simply be because I enjoyed the story more.

Quotable moment:

So darn cute! I loved this story, the sweet and humorous illustrations, and the resourceful kid who solved the problem of that pesky alligator under his bed--all by himself! It's just darling.

Of course, I'm a grown-up and no alligator has lived under my bed for quite some time so this book did not scare me at all and I think it's a good one for helping to overcome scary nighttime imaginings :-) But, some children may be frightened by it, see this fine review for example:

Cool illustrations, but I think a kid could get scared reading this.

I liked it! It's definitely a unique bedtime story and not one for the kids already scarred of something under their bed. But perhaps if you read it first during the day, they might come to see the comical side of this very funny story. Parents, I know you'll love this!

I like Mercer Mayer's stories and this has a catchy title, so we checked it out at the library. I think it actually scared our 6 year old, but I was able to convince her that there are no alligators in Hawaii, so it wasn't overly traumatic. Not sure if this is the best story to read to younger children!

Yet another book aimed at instilling fear in children.
Sure, if you've already taught your kid how to be afraid of "monsters" in their room then I suppose this is a good book for them.

Unfortunately the book also tells your kids that it's ok to take all of the food out of the refrigerator and strew it along the floor, enticing the monster out of their room.

If you've made your kid THAT anxious, then probably this would be a good thing for your kid to read/do.

I love this book, all the way from my own childhood to now reading it to my little child! Good thing the boy is smart enough to trick the alligator. Robbie (husband) was funny though... He kept wanting better answers. Example: Was the alligator really just the family dog?

I loved this book because it is silly and imaginative. The little boy tries all kinds of methods to get rid of an alligator under his bed, and eventually gets his way. I appreciate that this book doesn't have a serious message and is just a book for a good chuckle.

I think kids would love this book because it is silly and they can even come up with their own funny ways of getting rid of the alligator. I would emphasize that sometimes kids can conquer their fears with humor. Some kids are afraid of the dark or even sleeping alone, but this book shows that there is a way to tackle that, in a silly way.

Berry enjoyed this enough until we read it at bedtime. Possible mistake. Immediately afterwards she told me I could take it back to the library. lol This would've scared the bejeezus out of me as a kid. After the Sandman episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? I had to run and jump to get into bed every night. So, the idea of a large man-eating alligator that my parents couldn't see being under there would've been too much! Haha!

It was a fun adventure, but I can't believe Mercer Mayer used the word "follow" twice in two pages. Personal pet peeve: unless it's an intentional pattern (it isn't) use a different word!

This book is FANTASTIC! Not only is it written by one of my favorite children's authors, it is such a cute story! My toddler is obsessed with this book - we have read it at least five times in the last two days. Despite having checked out 8 books from our library (this being one of them) yesterday, he has consistently picked this one to read - and ignoring the rest, even though they're all books that reflect his current interests. This book is in my Amazon cart and has been shared via email with his grandma so that they have a copy, too! I definitely recommend this one!

Good book for a read aloud around ages of first grade. It's starts out with a young boy who does not want to go to bed, but not because of all the traditional reasons kids try to stay awake. No, this poor boy has an alligator under his bed! Every night he is terrified by this creature that manages to evade everyone else's eyeballs. He makes a trail of food which leads the alligator outside and into the garage, which then he warns by leaving notes all over the garage door. This book explores confronting your fears, and recognizing the reality children feel when facing an imaginary terror.

I did a read-aloud to a group of grade six kids today using this book. We got to discussing everything from what kind of pie an alligator (Alligator pie? Thank you Dennis Lee) would eat to monsters under the bed. I've loved Mercer Mayer since I first read the Little Critter series years and years ago. The illustrations are simple yet wonderful and the story always has heart.

For the pre-school to 2nd grade crowd and people like me who still close the closet doors at night so nothing can jump out... a picture book about a kid whose parents won't validate his claims that there is an alligator under his bed. Relocation makes this another winner of a book from Mercer Mayer. The guy's a genius.

Another book, I read with my student today. This one is a fun fantasy about a kid who has a problem: there's an alligator under his bed. He devises an ingenuous, if far fetched scheme to lure the alligator out. It's a cute little book. The illustrations are beautiful, and the plot is amusing. I recommend as a read aloud, a book for parents to share with children, or a book for beginning readers.

This is a fun book to read to children that have problems with sleeping on their own. It truly shows how creative a child's mind can be. This story would be great for further discussions such as "What would you do if you had an alligator under your bed? "How would you get the alligator out of your room?"

What I love most about this story is how sure the little boy is that there actually is an alligator under his bed. And the tactics he uses to lure the alligator out and into the garage, are classic. Another favorite!

This book has great illustrations and a great plot. It may be a tad scary for the younger children. Consider if the child would enjoy the book or if he/she is too young to understand that it's not real.

I loved this book! It was super cute, and humorous. That little boy mind imagination was so real to him. Which most children's are, their minds truly work the way his boy's did in the story. Good thing he out trick that alligator though.
