Paul Kidby (born 1964) is an English artist. Many people know him best for his art based on Terry Pratchett's Discworld. He has been included on the sleeve covers since Pratchett's original illustrator, Josh Kirby, died in 2001. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kidby
Terry Pratchett's Discworld Imaginarium is a beautifully-produced art book featuring the remarkable work of Discworld illustrator Paul Kidby.
Kidby took over from the original Discworld covers artist, Josh Kirby, after Kirby’s death in 2001. And it’s because I grew up with the Kirby-illustrated Discworld covers that Kidby’s art never felt like the “real” Discworld to me but his skill and vision is undeniable.
The book extensively showcases the massive range of Pratchett’s characters and places that Kidby’s drawn over the years, from book covers to character sketches to portraits of Terry. Art history fans will recognize Discworld parodies of famous artists from Da Vinci, Rembrandt and Joseph Wright made all the more impressive by Kidby’s admission that he’s a self-taught artist with no formal training! The level of detail is astonishing and fully-realised by the high-definition printing, and the paper is of a suitably quality glossiness and thickness for an art book.
There weren’t any pieces I disliked, though, as is often the case in non-visual art forms (at least originally in the case of most novels), I found myself disagreeing with some of his character designs. His Sam Vimes is way too good-looking and his Rincewind has never looked right. Among the many characters he nails though is Vetinari who has more than an air of Alan Rickman about him (exactly how I picture/hear him!) and I was surprised not to find any full-page acrylics of the Patrician.
My favourites were Death (especially the one where he’s playing guitar!), any featuring The Librarian, the zen-like Great A’Tuin and the poignant Seventh Seal-inspired final piece, “Check Mort”, of Death and Terry playing chess. A must-read for any Discworld fan, Paul Kidby’s book is a wonderful collection of gorgeous art that perfectly celebrates Terry Pratchett’s legacy.
Goodreads’ jpeg limitations don’t do any of the pieces justice but no art book review would be complete without some visual accompaniments. Here’s an idea of some of the standouts:
I pre-ordered this book as soon as it was available. Well, there was a mix-up and I pre-ordered the wrong one but I found out in time and managed to still get a copy of this limited deluxe edition. And boy, oh boy, is this a special edition!
The book offers art from across the novels (ever since Kidby took over after Kirby died), some in sepia, some pencil sketches and some oil paintings. It is ordered into chapters according to the places on the Discworld as well as some group of characters. The chapters have a quote describing the place or group in question but otherwise the art speaks for itself so I'm gonna let it speak for itself in this review too:
It is very big and heavy (especially with the box) but I'm proud to be able to add this to my collection.
Yes, I've already reviewed this. Why this second review? Because I have two different editions: this slipcased one and the already reviewed deluxe edition. The reason I bought both being that the title art piece, here, is not Greebo but Errol.
Other than that, apart from the binding and packaging, it's the same book. We get some cover art, pencil drawings, chalk pieces and occasional character portraits as well as additional art from within the stories of the series, all made by Paul Kidby.
I'm glad I bought both and revisited the fantastic art now that I'm reading the final volume in the series. Some characters or places look slightly different from what I've imagined but I agree with Sir Terry that Mr. Kidby had an uncanny way of representing his thoughts and creations.
A wonderful peek inside the mind of the author and the world he created - made to be marveled at (the book was produced at very high quality) and to reminisce about the Disc.
Where to start with this book. Well to simply put it, it is a super sized sumptuous celebration of Terry Pratchetts Discworld and the books that helped shape and explore it.
The book contains original sketches and trials as well as the finished pieces for his later titles which we all recognise and love.
The edition I managed to find is the standard version (there is an insanely expensive collectors edition apparently) is still a book to behold.
There is not much in the way of text I will admit as really the artwork says it all. the pieces are all in high quality print covering full pages and in some covering both. The detail you see here is just lost on the book covers.
Which to be honest is something I have seen many times before. You look at a book cover and think it looks good not really appreciating the work and detail that has gone in to it. This book easily addresses that balance you can see all the tiny details and its truly impressive. This is one of those books I am so pleased to have found and I will be taking great pleasure in taunting my Discworld loving friends.
Discworld is a delightful and challenging series. Pratchett’s imagination is unique and any only you can decide whether a drawing is better that the images conjured by his prose.
In the real world this is an oversized book of, primarily, art-work. In the e-book world the portfolio of sketches are equally well rendered.
My favorite drawing may be the one of Pratchett’s central city, Anhk-Morpork (p.88). It contains the atmosphere that Pratchett so patiently constructed.
If you're a fan of the Discworld series then there is no way you've not come across Paul Kidby's gorgeous artwork as he's been illustrating the covers since 2002 and has brought all of Terry Pratchett's most popular characters to life.
This is an absolutely gorgeous hardback that includes all of Paul Kidby's favourite Discworld pictures, many you may have seen before but also some that were only used for foreign covers or limited editions or that have never been published elsewhere. You'll find images in a mix of mediums from black and white pencil drawings to sepia or full colour acrylic and oil paintings. I loved that some images we get to see the whole process from initial pencil drawing to finished acrylic painting.
The images are split into categories which should make it easier for you to go back and find your favourite images at a later date.
The Chalk - Focuses on images of Tiffany Aching and the Wee Free Men along with the occasional appearance from Granny Weatherwax and other characters found in the Chalk.
Lancre - Set in the Ramtop Mountains Lancre is home to Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg (and of course her cat Greebo) and Magrat.
Ankh Morpork - Expect to find characters like Rincewind, Twoflower, Moist Von Lipwig, Lord Vetinari, the Hogfather and groups like the Fool's Guild.
Pseudopolis Yard - Home to the Ankh Morpork City Watch Headquarters here you'll see Captain Sam Vines, Captain Carrot, Sergeant Fred Colon, Corporal Angua, Sergeant Detritus, Nobby Nobbs and of course Errol.
Unseen University - Hangout of wizards like Archchancellor Cutangle, the Librarian, Hex, the Eater of Socks and Eskarina Smith.
Uberwald - Discworld's version of Transylvania and home to vampires, werewolves, the igors, dwarves, trolls and don't forget Amazing Maurice and his educated rodents.
Death's Domain - Focuses on Death & Binky, the Death of Rats, Mort, Susan, Albert and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Terra Incognita - this includes all the images that don't quite fit into any of the other categories, things like Rincewind on the moon, the Dungeon Dimension, Dunmanifestin (the home of the gods), the Wyrmberg, Four Ecks, Rimfall and of course the Great A'Tuin.
Ex Atelieris - This section includes drawings, paintings and sculptures of the great man Terry Pratchett himself both with and without his characters included and one of my favourite images of Terry playing chess with Death.
This really is a stunning book, I wish I'd been able to afford the Deluxe Special Edition that is only available directly from Paul Kidby or via the Discworld website but even the standard edition is a book that any fan would be proud to add to their collection!
Kidbys artwork for Discworld has always been stunning. Josh Kirbys stuff on the early books were good but Kidbys stuff showed someone who got into the books , the characters and the authors head. He captures the characters as they are presented in the book giving an extra dimension.
The question was posed about whether another person’s artistic interpretation might wreck my/our own, when bringing Terry’s characters to life. What has happened is I have been taken on a journey back through my memories of Discworld and inhabitants that simply makes me want to read them all again (again). Plus, I cried at the last few pages. Most unexpectedly.
Gorgeous art book for a wonderful world. I highly recommend readers of Pratchett's Discworld to check this one out from the library and peruse through it while you learn about the characters.
I'm looking forward to the upcoming biography on Sir Terry Pratchett coming out within the next year.
A beautiful Christmas present from my boyfriend, this book is packed full of Paul Kidby’s gorgeous illustrations of Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld characters and universe. Simply gorgeous. I count myself so lucky to have this in my collection.
A really beautiful book. If you're a mega Pratchett and Paul Kidby fan like me you've probably seen nearly all of the illustrations already, but it's nice to have them all in one place with such a wonderful presentation.
Absolutely loved the artwork in this book. Some I hadn’t seen before. Lovely to be able to see the detail up close after seeing them on book covers and art displays. The subtle differences of the rough draft to the final product impressed me.
A fantastic collection of Discworld artwork by Paul Kidby much akin to his previous The Art of Discworld but this is twice the size and is a fitting tribute to Terry Pratchett from his illustrator since 2002 following the death of his original illustrator Josh Kirby
People may disagree with Paul Kidby’s vision of what the characters appear like as they will differ from your own perception but you cannot refute the quality of the images he produced, Also much to my liking is the fact that at times the same image is shown in many stages (for example the image Discworld Massif is shown as a sketch (graphite on paper), an underpainting detail (acrylic on canvas) and as a full painting) Another nice touch is that some of the pieces were created after Terry Pratchett died in 2015, other pieces are from limited editions, foreign editions or book club editions
Your mileage out of this book will vary depending on how long you will spend examining and appreciating the artwork as other than an introduction and preliminary few paragraphs before each chapter there isn’t any text (except the name of each piece of artwork and its medium (graphite, acrylic, oil etc on paper, canvas, board etc) but for me this book is very much worth its asking price and after buying and looking through the standard version I was compelled to purchase the signed limited to 1250 copies version
This is a stunning book. Showcasing the art Paul Kidby did for the books of Sir Terry Pratchett, this takes you deep into their collaboration. As Kidby only took over the art after 2002, the majority of the work covers the later works, so their is a lot of Tiffany, The Chalk, Wee Free Men etc, but even so virtually the entire cast is covered one way or another. A lot of the work will be familiar to anyone that has read the books, however a lot of it will be brand new. Not only that, but in some cases, details are enhanced, or different versions are shown, showcasing just how good an artist Kidby is. The word count is not particularly high, and if I had one quibble it would be that I'd have liked to have heard more about his working process, but with a book this beautiful it's a minor complaint. You can read the book in half an hour, but every art work in here will keep you much longer.
I would be hard pressed to think of an author who has had a bigger or more profound impact on me than Terry Pratchett. My humour has been shaped by his writing. My awareness and understanding of satire, parody and irony has been informed through his books. His rage at injustice and corruption inspired me. His characterisation and how he structures a narrative engage me even now after I have read all of his books many, many times. I was unable to go to this exhibition celebrating the life and work of Pratchett, but this book captures the essence of what I hope it was like. It is a glorious recollection of family, friends and professional colleagues/peers about the career and life of Britain's most shop-lifted author. At times this book made me tear up as it brought back so many memories of my own and my relationship with his body of work. If you are a Pratchett fan, then this book is a joy!
A gorgeous collection of artwork about, and from the covers of, Pratchett's Discworld books. Kidby works in pencils, acrylics, oils - there's even a sculpture of the late author - and his work is beautiful, full of character and whimsy. It's a great pleasure to own. For some of his larger pieces a character key would have been appreciated (when there are dozens of citizens of Ankh-Morpork in one work, it would be nice to know who some of the lesser figures are, although I'm sure there are many Discworld readers who immediately know who's who), but that's a very minor quibble for such a lovely book.
I love the fact that this was made. As someone who has read the books mostly during childhood, this is something that makes you smile of nostalgia and good memories.
To this day he remains my favourite author, having played a big part in forming my character then and now. I still regret that I did not have the possibility to meet him in person. But every piece of his mind, including how he imagined his characters to look like, is something I treasure and which makes me feel a tiny bit better.
Absolutely gorgeous book, wish it was 3 times longer because oooooh boy is like half of The Last Hero need to be in here (kidding kidding. There's a bunch of illustrations absolutely adore from all over Discworld that aren't in this and totalz should have been)
PS: minus a star for some illustrations being 2-page spreads that bury an excellent detail riiiight in middle of crease thats hard to see. However, plus a star for Leonard sketch squeezing in an Ogg joke, Mona Lisa AND Titanic joke. All in same image!!
Absolutely amazing artwork from Paul Kidby, who manages to pack insane amounts of detail into every one of his Discworld pictures. This massive book contains a lot we may have seen before (although usually not as large) and several pieces that I've never seen, both new and older works. It is, of course, by no means *every* Discworld illustration he's done, but it's a great selection and a worth addition to any fan's collection.
Definitely a very enjoyable collection, though the tag-line of "very best" is not completely accurate, as far as I am concerned; there are illustrations that I had hoped to see here and some that I was surprised to find. The paper and print are of high quality and the layout is interesting, however I would have preferred illustrations taking up two pages to be in and around the middle of the book, so that they can be fully enjoyed with minimal pressure put on the spine.
