A widower with three adopted daughters, Emmit McKay likes to keep a handle on things. But nothing can prepare the former FBI sharpshooter for the battles coming to his small hometown. Especially the one which arrives in such a tempting package. Savannah Walker moves to Blue Creek to take over as principal of the school Emmit’s daughters attend. With a masters’ degree in education and a no-nonsense attitude, she is caught off guard by the behavior of the McKay girls and never expects to fall in love with them—or in lust with their father. But her intimacy with the family stirs up rumors and unearths secrets. Savannah and Emmit cannot deny the chemistry which draws them together, but the closer they get, the more dangerous the stakes become. When a murderer is hidden amongst you, you can’t let the dead lie.
This is a small town romance/mystery. The book itself, the adult characters and the mystery get 3* it's obvious half way in who the villain or villains are and while I liked Emmit as a father I didn't really like him with Savannah he blew far too hot and cold for me.
It's the McKay girls who completely steel the show, these girls are amazing and the reason for the extra *. Yes they're OTT I mean seriously these girls could give government covert operations lessons and it's all crazy but it's impossible not to love them.
Emmit McKay is a widower with three soon to be four adopted daughters. Casey, ten years old, Alexandra, eight years old, Fletcher, seven years old and the soon to be new addition Charlie who's eight years old.
Raising four hellions isn't easy but Emmit loves them with all his heart and it's so rewarding and he's happy.
Savanna is the new school principal and she's no idea what's going on when she first meets the McKay girls. She soon finds herself falling in love with them and their far too handsome father.
There's some small town quirky characters and it's an enjoyable read but one of the reasons I don't often read romance mysteries is it's always so easy to work out the villain and I like to have to work for it. I have to say the ending was too abrupt for my taste with a large jump in time but I suppose it's getting the reader ready for the next book. I'd decided while reading that even though I was enjoying it I wasn't going to continue on since the best part of the book was the girls and I wasn't really interested in any other town characters but it looks like the next book is about the girls so sign me up.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley and The Wild Rose Press Inc.
Talk about being misled by a cover and a blurb. I had this little gem all figured out as a small town cozy, chaste romance, with maybe a bit of mystery. Boy I missed this one by a mile. My own fault, never judge a book.... Dark secrets, heartbreaking scenes with children, terrible crimes, and hot sex, all in the first chapter. Okay I might by lying about that last part. New principal, Savannah Walker is challenged by three, then four motherless girls, but nonetheless finds herself totally beguiled by the girls. Same principal strongly attracted to their grieving father, Emmit McKay. Secrets abound and Savannah finds herself caught in the middle. McKay finds himself the target of an escalating series of crimes. This book was surprisingly good and constantly surprising me. Open mind, insert snobbery. One thing that didn’t surprise me, were the small town portraits. No caricatures, but warmly drawn friends and neighbors. Also, the girls are little scene stealers. I hear W.C. Fields whispering about never acting with children or dogs, so I guess the concept applies to books too. I am totally furious over the epilogue. How dare Brooks set the hook so strongly for the next book? Think I’m exaggerating? You read it and tell me you aren’t dying to know what happens next, because the set up is a huge shock. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange of a fair and honest review.
WOW! I mean…WOW. I love romantic suspense novels, and from the blurbs, I thought I would enjoy the McKay Series by W L Brooks, but Let The Dead Lie is a novel that keeps on giving. I couldn’t stop reading. I know this is romantic suspense, but the girls stole the show! The excellent characters are outstanding and outshine the wonderful mystery and danger.
“Daddy, it was all a big misunderstanding. Things were said, and then one thing led to another, and well, here we are.” Alexandra explained in the wispy voice he knew she’d been practicing in the mirror.
The girls, all adopted at the same time by Emmit McKay and his, now deceased wife, Gracie: Casey, who is ten years old, prideful with a superiority complex. Alexandra, who is eight years old and a girlie girl with an attitude. Fletcher is seven. Her name was Jamie, but the tomboy demanded her name be changed. Any idea where the name came from? Charlie, the peacekeeper comes to the fold later. Their large personalities are only eclipsed by their hearts.
When the social worker is due for an inspection prior to the adoption of Charlie:
“They want a fight?” asked Casey, nodding her head. “Is that it, Pops? We gotta fight for what’s ours?”
“Seems that way. If that’s what we all agree on.” He looked at each of his daughters, Casey and Alexandra nodded. Fletcher peered up at him and grinned It was the mischievous grin that made him want to swallow.
“We’s ain’t nos sissies. They want a fight, we’s’ll fight!” Fletcher whooped.
“What?”
“I thought we agreed on a dress.”
“I’s ain’t got a dress! And possession’s nine tenths of the law,” she said, crossing her arms over her chest.
Savannah comes to the small town of Blue Creek. She is the principal of the girl’s school and is put to the test when they are brought to her office for discipline. As the days unfold, she learns more about the girls and how the town looks…down…at them.
The girls are wise beyond their years, working as a team. They are secretive, plotting and planning…and when danger comes to their home, they will rise to the occasion.
The Widow Sadie had told them to Let The Dead Lie.
The writing made the situations easy to visualize, the dialogue making me feel as if I am there, hearing the words spoken live. Let The Dead Lie by W L Brooks would make a fabulous movie or TV series. I was smiling, laughing, cowering in fear, tearing up, all my emotions coming into play.
“We’s tried to keep the blood in, but it won’t stop,” Fletcher told her.”
The ending is heartwrenching, yet I did have a smile or two. I hate to pick favorites, but Fletcher spoke to me. She will do whatever it takes to protect what is hers. These girls are more than capable of doing exactly that.
At times, I had to take a break, the book was so intense and I was overwhelmed.
I could go on and on and I quickly grabbed the next book, The Secrets That Shape Us by W L Brooks, to see what the secret was that would make one of them leave Blue Creek.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Let The Dead Lie by W L Brooks.
A story about protective father (who was a FBI agent) with four adopted orphans, definitely will touch your heart. In lots of scenes in the book I really adore little girls and have a wish to be like them. Like the author said, the things can describe them are protectiveness, mothering, hair-trigger tempers, bad mouths, and prissiness. Casey, Alex, Fletcher and Charlie are the real base of this story. On this, is build also the love story of Emmit, or Pops (girl's father) and the young school principal Savannah and all of that beyond the shadow of Emmit's dead wife Grace and cognition that someone had tried to expel him from FBI and even kill him. I really can not classify this book only as a romantic story, as I can not classify only as a mystery. Maybe, the thriller, an interesting one... And fact is that, it is an interesting mix of lots of things and definitely worth for your time. And, of course, thank you very much to the Book Unleashed for the copy of this fantastic book...
I loved the McKay girls! Every one of them. They are rough and tough and full of vinegar, except Alex…uh, I mean Alexandra.
Emmit’s wife died three years ago and he is left to raise his four darling daughters. Or as some might think of them, little hellions. When he’s called into the school’s office to conference with the new principal, he is knocked for a loop at the beautiful woman he meets. Savannah is shocked to discover that the gang of miscreants that has the school office in an uproar is actually four sisters. And she’s got the hots for their father. This will never do!
This is a fast paced, pretty well written romance that actually focuses more on the girls than on the romance. Although I enjoyed Emmit and Savannah, I LOVED the girls! There were definitely moments I felt this was a little over the top because come on, these are children, but I was able to push that aggravation to the side and just enjoy this for what it was. This was a light hearted, family oriented read with a mystery that, if it didn’t actually surprise me, was definitely interesting. I enjoyed it very much!
This is an honest review of an advanced copy provided by NetGalley.
Dual POV Safe Possible Trigger Epilogue wraps up this couple but leaves open the opportunity to tell the girls' stories
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, I have to admit to not really liking or caring for the adult main characters all that much. I loved the girls. They stole the show with all their antics and shenannigans. Very ingenious lot, I have to say.
I would love to read the rest of this series.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
OMG be prepared to fall in love with 4 little girls who will make you laugh, smile and even bring tears to your eyes. These girls by far steal the show in this book; they are each just as much of a main character as Emmit and Savannah are.
About half way through the book you get to the true suspense part of the book. I have to admit the entire FBI/sniper thing seemed to come out of left field and I struggled with the new piece of information we learned about Emmit as it really didn't sit with the character they introduced thus far.
Emmit really rubbed me the wrong way throughout the book when it came to Savannah. He was hot and cold with her, as if he couldn't decide whether he wanted her. At first you assume this is because of his late wife and the obviously love he still feels for her. However what you learn later changes everything you know but still doesn't explain Emmit's constant back and forth.
Savannah I liked...except one part. But otherwise, my heart broke for her. The way she fell in love with the girls, the way she battled the small town mentality...all of it. I felt for her.
As far as the who did it, that came as a surprise. I hadn't factored him into the picture until a few pages before it was revealed who he was.
The book sort of ends on a cliffhanger. The story itself feels resolved so that's a plus but there's a part that leaves you going hmmmm... I'd be interested to see where the second book in this series picks up. Unless it's with the one of the kids who are now grown up, I can't see reading it. Emmit and Savannah's story has been told, I can't see continuing it beyond this book with them as the primary characters.

THE BOOK IS GREAT READ AND NOT GOING TO SAY MORE YOU LOVE HOW THE STORY IS PUT OUT TO YOU THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME LISTEN TO IT
Captivating, moving and surprising, this book is a great read. This kicks off a new series from the talented Ms. Brooks. I am hooked on her stories and I can not wait to read the next book in this series. Quite frankly, she is an auto-read author for me now. I will pick up the book without reading her book blurb.
I enjoyed going into this story cold. I wasn't sure what to expect. From the first page, the story pulled me in. As the story unfolds, the reader learns more about this McKay family. I'm in love with this family created from the heart. Emmit McKay is an impressive man who is big hearted and loves his girls. He wants to provide a safe hope to orphaned children. He found four girls who needed his support and he does an amazing job as a single father.
I loved how the story slowly revealed a little bit more and showed how what one thinks is true may not be reality. Even the smallest of towns have secrets. Perception is reality for many and if someone gives the perception of perfection, gullible people buy it.
I really thought this story was about how a man handles being a single father and finding love again. Boy was I wrong. It is more than this. This story layered on family dynamics - functional and dysfunctional, discrimination against adopted children, gender fluidity and a mystery. Ms. Brooks lead me on a merry journey and I enjoyed every minute of it. And when I thought the tour was over, she smacks me up side the head with a cliff hanger. I can only hope the next book in this series comes out quickly as I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next big reveal.
This genre defying romance is recommended for readers who want to be moved and surprised.

This contemporary romance takes place in small town that is full of secrets that draws readers in and keeps them guessing from the very beginning of the story!
Reading a long book can sometimes be frustrating and leaving the reader bored. I hate reading books like that because it feels as if the story is dragging on the way past its limits. This book, however, changed my mind!
The book starts out with a father of three girls, deceased wife Gracie due to cancer. The girls are the only thing that keeps Emmit McKay sane these days. He sold the home that he lived with his wife until she passed away and moved back into his childhood home. Casey is 10 yrs old and has the role as "enforcer" over her sisters to keep them in line. She is the oldest female in the house feels that she has to protect them as well. Alex, Alexandra thank-you-very-much, is the regal 8 yr old going on 60. She has what most call "old soul" and would be right at home in the Victorian era. She is the morals, manners, and etiquette police in the family. No cussing, no attitude, always act like a lady, and most of all a "so-so" snob. Fletcher is the instigator and the youngest at 7 yrs old. She refuses to be bullied, bossed, insulted, and keeps mostly to herself. She is the first to get into a fight or smart off to create a fight. Emmit is the father and lives in a sea of women and he loves it. His girls are his entire world. Working and owning a hardware store in town that once belonged to his grandfather. Is not surprised when his girls are in trouble.
Emmit is not happy about the new principal at his girls' elementary school and plans to give to set him straight. He is stunned to see a female sitting behind the desk. Savannah Walker has accepted a principals position and on her first day, she meets the McKay girls. She was warned about these girls and that they were no good. Something about them grabs her heart and when she meets the father, Emmit. Sparks fly between them and they BOTH feel it. Sadie Madison is best known as Widow Madison or Sadie to her friends. She feels love for the McKay family and also rents out an apartment to Savannah. Charlie is the last to join the family and Emmit fought hard to adopt her. With her witty personality and creative mind (inside and outside of the kitchen) she is the string that ties altogether with her positive outlook on circumstances. She is compared to in the book as a mother hen to the kids as well as the adults. There are many other characters in the book, yet I feel these to be the main ones.
The hardware store begins to be the target of vandals. First, it was graffiti on the far side of the way, the private entrance for Emmit. Then it was broken into, money seemed to be the target. Arson was the final straw that made Emmit believe he was targeted. He thinks that it was from his past life before he came home and worked at the store. His was former FBI agent and was very good with a gun. A lesson he has instilled in his girls.
There are many twists and turns in this book. Several people seem to be on the list of suspects. Murder, vandalism, romance, rage, hate, fear, and loss fill these pages. There are several sexual encounters in the book that are not appropriate for children as well as some strong language. It brings you full circle and reveals the truth. The only thing that it does not tell you is the letter that causes one child to walk out on her family and not look back. I believe that this is a cruel and clever way to end the book. I make you want to read the next book in the series and makes you annoyed that you want answers now. I love this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series! I received this book for free and I offer my unbiased opinion in return.
Emmit McKay is the dad to four adopted daughters, he is raising them solo since his wife Grace died. Strange things keep happening to Emmit, and he has no idea who is behind the deception. When Savannah Walker enters his life along with the lives of his daughters, things will never be the same again. She basically turns his life upside down in a good way.
This book has it all drama, secrets, murder, suspense. The title fits so nicely with this story. Trust me on this. You keep hearing it, but when you get to the ending you will understand it. Everything that keeps happening to Emmit, his daughters, and Savannah comes together and fits so perfectly.
What brought the rating down for me was how long it took to get into the story. At first it dragged on but once you get past the first couple of chapters, you will be hooked. I loved the dynamic between the father and daughters. The dynamic between the sisters was amazing. I need to know what was said in the note. I have to know. This is going to haunt me until the day I die. I know I’m being overly dramatic, but I HAVE TO KNOW. TELL ME.
3.5* ARC Review – Slow Burn, Small Town Mystery This is my first book by this author and the ARC was provided by Hidden Gems in exchange for this review. This is the story of a widower, Emmitt McKay, who had adopted four little girls because his wife was not able to have children. Initially we meet him just after his wife’s death and then we spring forward two years as to where the McKay family is, and they are introduced to new school principal Savannah Walker. She immediately becomes very involved with the family due to the issues that bring the McKay girls to her office. There are so many good things about this book including the various personalities of the girls and how they handle different situations. The romance between Emmitt and Savanah is at times an afterthought to the story with a slow burn feel. As the story progresses, we learn more about the past and why some of the strange occurrences seem to be happening. The story felt disjointed at times and I felt like it could have been better explained. The ending sets it up for the next book in the series, so I really wish this one gave us an idea of when this story occurs. There are no cell phones and the kids are free range, so it would help to know when this is supposed to be happening.
Let the Dead Lie by W.L. Brooks The McKay Series #1
Complex, intriguing, small town story that includes family, friends, romance, deceit, mystery and suspense…this was a story that kept me reading and kept some twists for the end.
Emmit is a man who loves his daughters. He is raising them on his own having been widowed a few months before the story begins. Four unique, headstrong, tenacious and precocious girls that are unusual, to say the least, and have bonded to create an unbreakable force to be reckoned with are the stars of this story. Into the lives of Emmit and his daughters steps Savannah Walker – new school principal. Her first encounter with the sisters during the first week of school is…interesting. Her encounter with their father…even more interesting. Her encounters with others provide background and fodder for the storyline.
The story is fast-paced, action-packed, charming, endearing and has a small town cozy feel to it with a bit of the backwoods in dialogue and behavior, at least at times. The bad guy is not revealed till the very end and is done with a bit of drama. I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading the second book in the series to find out if the questions I had related to a letter will be revealed. I did think the ending a bit abrupt with a significant time span leapt over but all in all this was an interesting and entertaining book.
Thank you to NetGalley and The Wild Rose Press, Inc. for the ARC – This is my honest review.
A new author to me. I’m not sure if the editing of this book, or the author’s style left me a bit cold but I didn’t enjoy this read as much as I hoped. The story is about Emmitt, a widower, who had adopted four little girls because his wife was not able to have children. The story begins after his wife’s death and then we spring forward two years. At that point, Emmitt’s daughters are starting in a new school having just met the school principal Savannah. She immediately becomes very involved with the family due to the issues that bring the McKay girls to her office. I like this kind of story. A single dad is my thing but the romance part of the story was quite slow. The parts of the story that I had trouble were with the flow story. I felt it jumped around a lot and I had more questions then answers by the end. I felt the ending was more to set up the next book. I voluntarily received an arc copy of this book from HiddenGems
The author spun a charming romance into something so much more. With subplots and the skillful use of minor characters life in a small town was realistic, even when strange things started happening. The plot was well paced, never leaving me waiting for the next shoe to drop. The characters developed and matured as the story unfolded.
I was glad that no stereotypes shackled the author in the telling, good people had flaws. That doesn't happen in all stories, but it tugged at my heart strings in this one. The one thing I had to struggle with was deciding who the story revolved around. Was it the couple falling in love? Or was it the children? Attention was paid to both, in the end it was probably a draw.
The only thing I didn't care for was the ending to the epilogue. It tied up some loose ends while leaving even more. But in the end, I'd eagerly suggest anyone that likes suspenseful stores read this.
What a well written, exciting book! Just when I thought it was going to be a simple story of a man with 4 adopted daughters in a small town, it got so exciting, I couldn’t put it down! Loved the characters, especially the girls, and how they interacted. It wasn’t until near the end that you find out who the bad guy was, although It wasn’t too difficult to work it out. I wasn’t sure about how the main character Emmet acted earlier on with the leading lady though... it didn’t seem in line with his character and I couldn’t fathom what he was thinking to act so strangely with her. I can’t wait to read the next book as we were left with a bit of a cliffhanger!
Omg..I love the girls and want to read more. The whole town treats the McKay girls like they are nothing but heathens...now that is partially true. They tend to get into trouble and often but they are loyal and true. They now have a new person in their corner in the form of the new principle who also happens to have the hots for their widowed father. The chemistry is so thick between them but he only wants to focus on his girls. Not everyone in their little town are what they seam. One of them is a murderer and are after McKay. This has so many twist and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat. Very entertaining. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down. It had me laughing from the start, it even brought tears to my eyes in some places. The girls and their antics are hilarious. They are rough and tough and reminded me of people I know. Lol. The mystery aspect if the book was a little easy to figure out or at least guess what was going on, but it still made an interesting read. I look forward to reading the rest of the series and visiting the McKay girls again.
LET THE DEAD LIE is my second W.L. Brooks novel and I couldn't be more pleased. Ms. Brooks has an uncanny knack for creating three-dimensional characters that leap off the page and she absolutely did that with the four sisters who are as alike as they are different.
Likes: The downright dogged devotion and loyalty the sisters have for each other juxtaposed against the reality that instead of being biologically related, they are in fact, adopted. Something that seems to cause consternation for some of the townsfolks. The overall story building AND telling is richer and tastier than the best Southern comfort foods. Yes, even your gran's mac n' cheese.
Dislikes: What did the letter say?!?
While this story does have a romance element and I can see categorizing it as such, the secondary characters figure so prominently in the story and the overall suspense is so good that I don't recommend going into this story expecting something light-hearted. Because, while yes, you will laugh out loud at times, you might also find yourself tugging at your hair, as you find yourself unable to put your eReader down until you get to the end. Because, it's that good.
The review was originally published by me on The Romance Reviews.
From the first chapter you can’t help but fall in love with the McKay Girls’. And as their family secrets are revealed and their family is subject to danger, the know how to deal with everything that is thrown at them. Loved the story I couldn’t put it down until I finished it the same day. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Let the Dead Lie by W.L. Brooks takes you on a suspenseful romance between Elliot McKay and Savannah Walker. Elliot, a single father of 4 adopted daughters find himself in the crossfire of a secret killer that has his sight on him and his family
Savannah Walker, the newest principle at the middle school feels a sudden attachment to the four young girls and their father but when her life is put in danger will she stay and fight for those she loves?
This book was beautifully written and kept me engaged throughout the entire story.
*I voluntarily reviewed this book after receiving a free copy.
Great book. Good story and fantastic characters. Lots of plot twists. It will keep you reading till the end. The only negative thing I can say is that it talked about a important letter twice but didn't say what was in the letter. I wish I knew.
I enjoyed the book, Which is a 1st time read for this author. The story blends murder, mystery, mayhem, romance and colorful characters well. Emmitt's four young daughters definitely deserve to have books written about their sure to be unique future lives. I look forward to the author expanding this series. I have to find out what the.secret is, though I have my theories already. I read an ARC from H*dd*n G*ms. I saw there is a book 2 which I shall definitely read.
This had me turning pages to see what would happen next. A litany of colorful characters, a mystery to solve, with a mixture of humor and romantic spice.
Hot single dad with secrets. Forbidden romance. Forced proximity. Small-town. Suspense. Page-turning action. Plot twists. And spice. Did I mention the steamy scenes?
Widower Emmit McKay has his hands full with three adopted daughters. But when orphan Charlie needs a stable home, he doesn't hesitate to open his heart and home to her.
The four McKay sisters become thick as thieves, but the gossipy small town of Blue Creek has plenty to say about them, especially since they're constantly in the principal's office.
New principal Savannah doesn't believe the nasty rumors about the girls and quickly becomes entrenched in their lives. And the life of the girls' father - sexy Emmit McKay.
This book has romance, suspense, secrets, forced proximity, forbidden romance, angsty love, and steamy scenes. It's well-written with each character's individual personality shining through.
The twisty plot will keep you guessing until the very end. This story does set up the next novel in the series - but is HEA.
Gem of a small town mystery romance. Full of vibrant characters and an enemies to lovers romance between a widower and the new principal. The bond she forms with their daughters was endearing and real. I can’t wait to read the next. The time jump makes for a perfect sequel with a daughter as the new MC.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
As a girl mom of 4, I really enjoyed this story. Daughters are so fun and I really saw some of my girls in these characters. This book took a couple of chapters to pull me in but once I was hooked, I was HOOKED! I couldn’t put it down. I was up until 3am finishing it!
Let The Dead Lie was a good story with some interesting characters. A romance with a who done it mixed in. The girls totally steal the book. Each one completely different but together they are an unstoppable force! It took me a while to finish the book. It moved a little slow for me and just took me time to really get into it. I thought I had it figured out who Mr. X was talking about but I was totally wrong! Did not see that twist coming at all! Book does kind of end on a cliff hanger so I'm curious to read the next one.
