Shifters Of Kladuu #1

The Vilka's Servant

Rate this book
Kladuu is a planet full of shape-shifting clans.

It’s also the best-kept secret from the clans’ greatest enemy: Humans.

Vera is the sole female engineer in her department aboard the Zynthar International Space Station. Fighting against sexist prejudices is the only battle Vera has known until a band of rogue aliens attack the space station, taking her and a group of women hostage. It’s a battle between life and death when Vera and the women are forced into servitude on an unknown planet full of shape-shifting alien wolves called Vilkas. Vera will do anything to escape, but the Vilka she works for is protective and loyal … and far too attractive.

Rayner is Beta of Clan Vilka on Kladuu. It’s a position he puts before all other aspects of his life, including love. But the more he gets to know his beautiful human servant, the more he recognizes the flaws in his clan’s way of life. Amidst the stirrings of a servant uprising, another serious threat lurks in the shadows, waiting to destroy all Rayner holds dear—including Vera.

When Rayner’s duties to his clan and his Alpha fall in direct opposition to protecting Vera—to protecting his mate—he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. Even if the cost is betraying his people.

Even if the cost is his life.

Jessica, I really need to stalk your bookshelves more often!

There are alien romances, there are shifter romances and then there are alien shifter romances 😂😂😂😂 Yes it does require some imagination but hey...we are readers.. it's what we excel at.

Vera was kidnapped from a space station along with several women to be sold as part of the flesh trade. On the way they discover the secret of their captors, their ability to shift. When they land on a strange planet Kladu, the women are forced into servitude. But Vera along with the other women keep plotting for ways to escape.

The world building is good. There are lots of different clans residing in Kladu....and inter-clan tensions run high. I wish more was said about the draqons but I guess we'll get separate books for that. Liked all the main characters including Geritt, Nestan, Niva.

I liked Vera but I felt she had too much of a hero complex. Rayner was a really good hero. None of the typical alpha-assholishness from him. He treats women with respect consistently throughout the book. He tries to do the best for them within society's limitations.

It's a short read and left me curious to read more books from the series.

So this was an average entry for paranormal/sci-fi books. Fated mates fall quickly into lust, but the surrounding story and world were fairly interesting. I thought everything could have been explored a little more, but perhaps more will be divulged as the series continues.

I read this book for the werewolf entry for a Halloween challenge, but it was more of a shifters-in-space book. The many references to "moon madness" had me thinking the werewolf aspect would be true to the lunar patterns.

I read a review from a goodreads friend (Romance Novel Giveaways Lauren Seiberling) and immediately became intrigued by this series. I had to buy this book to see if it could be as good as I hoped. Turns out it was even better. The writing was fantastic. I loved the world Pearl created. I felt as though I was there, gasping and my body tense, while discovering this new planet with Vera. It was written in a way to feel real, but not bogged down with too many details. And then we come to Vera. I LOVED her. She was brave, strong, feisty, funny, and smart. She is everything I want in a heroine. And Rayner is everything I love in a hero. Compassionate, smart, loyal and incredibly hot. He and Vera lit up the pages and I craved their scenes together. Their chemistry was felt immediately, and I couldn't read the pages fast enough to see if they would get their HEA.

This isn't just a romance. There is plenty of action, suspense and secondary characters I can't wait to read up on. Everything about this book was a winner to me. I was blown away by this story, and am so glad I gave it a try.

I 100% recommend to sci-fi romance fans looking for a brilliant new world to fall into.

The Vilka’s Secret, the online exclusive, was a quick little prequel to the Shifters of Kladuu series, and it left me super excited to dive into the world. Whilst it only gave me a glimmer of what was to come, I adored it and could not wait to get my hands on more. Thus, I dove into The Vilka’s Servant. It did not disappoint.

The Vilka’s Servant is a wonderful science fiction romance that blends with the shifter aspects of popular urban fantasy novels, giving us a hybrid in the form of shifters in space. I love both shifter novels and space novels, so this book was right up my street. In fact, it worked to highlight how I need to read more of these kinds of books. It really is a wonderful blend of two things I really enjoy.

The story itself introduces us to so many aspects, making for a wonderful introduction to the Shifters of Kladuu series. We’re given glimpses of so many different things, many elements appearing throughout the story that are sure to make for interesting reading throughout the series. Whilst I would have liked some of the elements to have been explored a bit more in this one, I realise certain things were left rather open so they could be addressed in the future books. These were side elements, though, not the main storyline – the main storyline was a lot of fun.

From the very start this story pulled me in, making it difficult for me to put down. The events hook you from the very start, and throughout things are building at a wonderful pace. There is plenty of action to keep you engrossed, plenty of romance to leave you wanting more, and as a whole everything comes together so well in this one. It’s such a gripping storyline and the characters were wonderful, a brilliant combination.

In truth my biggest disappointment is that we didn’t get to see the characters from The Vilka’s Secret. I had a feeling we wouldn’t, but a small part of me had been holding out hope of a cameo appearance from the characters I came to love so much in the short story. It’s not an end of the world issue, but it was a little thing I’d been hoping for.

Overall, I adored this. I cannot wait to dive into book two, as I’m super excited to see what the next story brings.

Behavior didn't fit the situation

I couldn't get past 42%. The story is based on a raiding party who steaks several human women for trafficking purposes. This is not condoned by local leadership, so the women end up as servants with limited rights and a mountain of extreme consequences if they fall out of line. Knowing this, the h, Vera, acts more like the dominate in the relationship between her and Raynor giving him demands, bossing him around, etc. I could believe this if their relationship had more substance to it and time to evolve, but this started at moment one. It made him appear weak, which contradicted his position in the clan. I'm not saying he needed to be abusive, but he couldn't even stand up to her knowing her actions could get her exiled. This all seemed too unrealistic for the scenario. It didn't fit. I think the author tried to make her seem like she cared about the others, but her careless attitude toward consequences didn't mirror a person who considered others before she acted. I couldn't like her or even empathize with her. I won't read this author again.

Not bad. Not bad. Curbed my alien smut appetite a little. I'll be checking out the rest of the series eventually for sure as well!

Why not 5 stars? Although the writing was subarb and although I enjoyed the discriptive paragraphs (the world is really quit the marvel) I just didn't 100% understand our villains motives.

Why did they capture the human women knowing the laws of his people? Did he think he was going to get away with it? Because it was pretty obvious they weren't. They didn't get very far. Even with that ending, it's evident they're still the losers.

Oh the stars and moons! Yes, please! This is a suspenseful, sci-fi, alien romance. There is never a dull moment in this story. Right from jump you meet Vera, one of the only women engineers on the international space station. She is constantly being looked down upon as she is a woman. She and other human females are abducted by the Vilka's. Right here, this part of the story....this is where Vera truly finds herself. She is strong and makes a vow to help the other women on board. But then they find out that their captors are shape shifting wolves. Just when you didn't think things could get worse, right? They land on Kladuu, the shifter's home planet and taken in as servants to help save them from being sold in the flesh trade. Vera meets Rayner, the Beta, and her benefactor. Tension rises! Like, quick! Here is where things get tricky. The love and attraction that occurs is wonderful and beautifully timed but Vera and Rayner are of two different species. Rayner has duties to his clan and his planet. Vera has vowed to help her fellow women that were abducted. The plot twists! Yes, they are there and they are in the most perfect spots. Pearl Foxx has done an excellent job in developing these characters and the world building is phenomenal. I started reading and couldn't put this down. But when I did, I couldn't get this story out of my head. I had to finish it. Oh, and hold on tight because the end is of cosmic proportions! Perfect set up for another book. I can't wait!

This book is SO GOOD!!!

Pearl is an incredibly talented author. Her writing just flows so beautifully; no choppy sentences, no romance novel cliches, no dull parts. I could not put this book down!

The imagery in this book in unreal. I could totally imagine the scenes playing out exactly as Pearl had written them.

Vera is an awesome heroine! Independent for sure, she also has a sassy streak about a mile wide. Her interactions with Rayner were quite interesting in the beginning!

Rayner is a total alpha (even though he's the Beta. Ha!) I felt for him when he was torn between his duty to the clan and his duty to his heart.

Sexytimes? Oh, yes! But these were truly love scenes, full of, well, love. Plus, I'm always a total sucker for the whole "true mates" or "fated mates" aspect, and that is absolutely a part of this book!

The ending was SO PERFECT!!! The scene before the final scene was so emotional, and then the ending happened and I am now officially OBSESSED with this series!

I CANNOT WAIT TO READ MORE OF PEARL'S BOOKS!!!!!

(I received a copy of this book in consideration of an honest review)

Sci-fi Paranormal Romance

This series opener is a twist on the sci fi paranormal romance theme. It takes place on the planet Kladuu, inhabited by hostile shifter clans. Vera, a human mechanic on a space station is kidnapped along with other women from the station. When they arrive at the stronghold of the Vilkan clan of wolf shifters, they are placed in servitude. But, Rayner, the Beta of the clan, takes Vera under his protection. As the child of a slave, Rayner has worked to improve the lives of the lower classes and has brought an end to slavery, but injustices continue. And it's by seeing his culture through new eyes that he understands how far they still have to go to make things right. For now, Vera is his servant and off limits. But she's also his mate, and still off limits.

Gotta love a stubborn, head strong, intelligent, fearless and human woman and that is just what Vera is. Then there is Rayner a beautiful alien shifter and the Beta of his Clan. When these two meet it's instant attraction but not instant action after all they have a few issues to address first then they can deal with the umm . . . mate situation. I love this author and even though I am not a big fan of aliens I do love shifters and it was easy to get drawn into this beautiful and scary world. The imagery is brilliant and the story is everything you need to keep you invested in the characters and the world that is laid out for you. It's a world worth returning to with love, action and change happening it's a place called home. While this is a standalone, the characters crossover so we get a continuous update on all the wonderful characters you will love and even those you won't.

Marvelously entertaining and imaginative SF romance

I have read every one of these 6 books through Kindle Unlimited, and every one is a 5-star fantastic read. Kladuu, a hidden planet, is populated by Vilkas (wolf shifters), Draqons (dragon shifters), Katu (big cat shifters) and an aquatic shifter species called the Hyla. The overall series plot concerns the attempts of the species of Kladuu to keep rapacious human conquerors from seizing and exploiting the planet and enslaving the shifters who live there. In each novel but the last, a human female manages to somehow end up on hidden Kladuu, where true love awaits her in the guise of her shifter mate. The last novel features a Draqon pair, who meet on Earth, but end up back on Kladuu. In the beginning, the Kladian shifter clans are enemies. As the series progresses they must learn to accept each others' differences and work together for the defense of their planet. Of course, in each novel there are steamy love scenes, sexy shifters and surprisingly strong human females who have something special to contribute to the struggle. There are traitors and trials and plenty of action as well. Sex and suspense keep you flipping those pages, and smooth writing keeps everything moving at a perfect pace. Pearl Foxx's fine world-building and clever plot twists form a solid foundation for each story. Do yourself a favor and read the books in order for the greatest impact and the most reading pleasure.

Another author to follow!! What a great story! Vera is the only female engineer on her space station and just wants to do what she loves without fighting to get to do it. When aliens attach the station and take the females all she knows is she needs to find a way to escape, even more so when the women see on of the captures shift into a wolf. When the ship arrives at the aliens planet Rayner, the pack Beta, meets them and takes the women from their captures but since they saw the one shift he can do nothing but to make them servants and try to keep them safe. When he sees Vera he knows she needs to be with him and keeps her for himself. Even with the growing feelings between them Vera knows she needs to be escape with the woman but there are others on this planet that don't like the new humans and makes it dangerous for them.

This is a different type of shifter story, you have the shifters (love shifters) who are also aliens, what a combo! A great story with everything - action, romance, heat and shifters! And a couple who want each other but also knows they need to do the right thing even if it's not if it A definite must read, you don't want to miss out!

WOW

I was leary at first, but I thought I would give this book a try. WOW! I am so glad I did! It sucked me in from the first chapter. Lots of action going on now this story. I can't wait to read the next one.
Vera is kidnapped by Vilka, who are pretty much wolf shifters but seem to be more primal and bloodthirsty. Savas is the leader of the kidnappers. He is half brother to the alpha of Kladuu. He wants power and money, so he is going to sell the twenty human he kidnapped to the highest bidder.
When Rayner finds out about the illegal activity, he meets them as they are unloading the ship.
He talks to the alpha who allows the women to be secants to protect them of course the women want to go home and be free, not become servants.
The alpha is dieing of moon sickness, so sometimes he isn't very clear headed.
Lots of problems ensue because of Savannah, the women wanting free and the alphas sickness. During this, Rayner discovers Vera is his true mate which does not happen often on their planet.
If you like fast action, feudal, scifi stories with love entwined, you will want to read this.

What a different blend of a shifter and space story. It was an addicting read as it mixed both genres together. Basically this is the story of Vera who was an engineer on a human space station that is raided by shifters coming through a secret worm hole and ends up as a servant to the Beta Rayner. Other human women are also taken and have to learn to survive so they can escape (well that is the plan) It was a mix of futuristic tech and middle age living in a mountain. It was interesting and made me laugh or groan to read how Vera made Rayner face how his clan lives and its class differences. I received a free copy n my honest review is that it was better then I thought it would be and I found the blend of genres to be very well done. And a few steamy scenes but not too nasty to distract from the overall story. Add in action, rebellion, and a few crazy shifters you get a good story.

The beginning of this book grabs you with the kidnapping of Vera and several other women from the Zynthar International Space Station by aliens from beyond a black hole that was unknown to the humans. These were bad men led by the Alphas half brother Savas who were going against there own people the Vilkan wolf shape-shifters of Kladuu. The Clans Beta Rayner got wind of the arrival of Vera and the others and rescued them before Savas could complete his plan of selling them for slavery. Rayner instead decided gave them jobs as servants thinking that they would be happy with this. Vera educated him in the fact that being "servants" was really not all that different than the slavery they were rescued from. While he was coming to terms with this he was also slowly realizing that she was that rare find his 'True Mate'. This was a wonderful story and a it ends in a HEA. But leaves an opening for following stories for a couple of Vilka Males that cant help but snag the imagination.

I don't usually go for this type of book with the male six pack on the front, as they are usually nothing but sex with very little in the way of a story. Which is fine if that's what you want. As they say, "Don't judge a book by its cover", so on this occasion, I didn't.

This is actually a really good story by this new author, starring Vera, a fantastically strong-minded human female, and Reyner, a rule-stickler, shape-shifting Vilka Beta. There are other great characters involved too, and you'll never be wanting for action, romance, or excitement. The sex fits into the story, and the love is deep, complete, and beautiful. I'm looking forward to this series and hope that the author can keep up this high standard.

I was given an ecopy of this book which I voluntarily read, and honestly reviewed.

Vera and Raynar

Vera is abducted, along with other women, from an Earth Space Station near Saturn. The men that abducted them turn out to be shape-shifters; the Vilka are wolf shifters. When the ship lands the men are caught but the women are told they can never return to Earth because they'd reveal the Vilka's existence.

The women aren't happy to find they have to remain and be servants for life. Vera and a few of the women plot their escape. Raynar, Vera's master, isn't at all what Vera expected after meeting the bad guy Vilka.

The plot of this story is good but for the first third of the book all that was talked about was how mad Vera was both on the Space Station and then on the Vilka's Planet. It was tedious; I would have DNF if I'd had an internet connection to download something else to read.

This is the first book in the Shifters of Kladuu series. You can read this as a standalone book but it is open-ended for the next book to be written in the series. There is violence and graphic sex so 18+.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that here. The author has done a good job of creating an alien world full of shape shifters. As usual everyone and everything is not as it appears.

Overall I enjoyed reading this book and want to read more about these characters and world. Unfortunately, at this point there aren't any more books in the series written yet. I received a copy of this book from the author and chose to leave a review for other readers.

This is the 1st book I’ve read and reviewed for Pearl Foxx and I absolutely loved it. This is the story of Vera and Rayner, women have been kidnaped from a space station by Savas and he is planning on selling the women to be servants. As soon as Rayner see’s Vera he knows that she is his mate, on Kladuu there are many shifter clans and Rayner is a wolf shifter. I loved loved loved this book and the sex scenes burned up my kindle and made me sweat lol. Great chemistry between Vera and Rayner and a great storyline. I love alien sci-fi romances and I recommend this book to anyone to anyone that loves them too. A great read and I can’t wait for the next book.

I downloaded The Vilka's Servant as a free ebook from Amazon. I didn't have any real hope for this book beyond a few hours of escapism, but I have to say, the plot had more meat than expected and I actually got caught up in the plot and characters. Light Sci-Fi fare, but entertaining due to the characters. Hardly realistic as far as Vera's pushiness and Raynor's lack of aggression for an alpha male--but, I had fun with this one. Relax and enjoy, don't think about this one too hard and you may like it, too.

A wonderful read, full of imagery and strong characters. Vera was a wonderful strong female character, she is always looking for a way to escape. Rayner is the beta who cannot figure out why he keeps thinking about Vera. The story is full of intrigue and danger. Savas is the character you love to hate. I recommend this book to everyone. Lots of shifters in this story. This is a good series where the characters stay with you forever. A whole new world to learn about.

WOW!!!!

"The Vilka's Servant" is my first book by author Pearl Fox, but it won't be my last that's for sure!! I'm so glad I decided to read this title after reading a sample and discovering it was free on Kindle Unlimited. I'm about to start the second book in this series. If you like smoking hot sci-fi romance with plenty of action and suspense, you won't be disappointed and you won't be able to put it down once you get into this story. Enjoy!!!😜

Really?? Space werewolf??

I almost liked it. The relationship part seemed so forced. Like they messed up the story with the sex. I liked the undertones of rebellion ...the trouble with the alpha. The omega... attacks of warring clans. there are so many things the author could have brought out more which would've made this a good book

Great series to get sucked into

This kind of borders on fluff and adventure sci-fi romance. The characters are likable, the world-building is pretty decent and of course, there's an HEA. The story itself is well-written with plenty of action and chemistry in between.
It's a decent book for a quick, mindless read- nothing too mind blowing, but a cute, sext story nonetheless.

Great start to the series. Loved it. She had one job and all of a sudden things go sideways. He ends up owning her. Things start one way and go another and then you have all the little things intertwining. Real interesting and keeps your attention. It's got it all.......

I must admit this was one of those that I chose as was a shifter story but definitely got more than that. A strong female with a few more thrown in, romance but nothing too much, betrayal, action, and hints of other storylines that will grab you. Read this in a night as couldn't put it down.
