THE MACBETHS TAKE WASHINGTON—and leave a pile of bodies in their wake.In searing political commentary laced with a gripping murder mystery that hits disturbingly close to home, Dennis Carstens tackles financial misconduct, scandalous cover-up, treason, and murder in the 7th installment of the Marc Kadella legal thriller series—a scathing imagining of an American White House nobody’s ever seen before, and yet one that is all too familiar…

"A shot in the dark, right in the gut, that’s what Carstens is good at … Carstens aims to be realistic about the law and its enforcers, and he hits it right ... The plot is as full of surprises as a Minneapolis Jucy Lucy and ultimately just as satisfying." -Tony Dunbar, Anthony- and Edgar-nominated author of the Tubby Dubonnet legal thriller series.

It’s four days after the latest presidential election, and Marc Kadella has the post-election blues. Sure, his guy didn’t win, but there’s more to it than the defeated incumbent was a decent man. Too bad you can’t say the same for his Machiavellian opponent—or his photogenic partner-in-crime.

Thomas Jefferson Carver is charming and energetic, with a former beauty queen for a wife—and a name for the job to boot. Together they’re the package young, modern, forward-thinking, and successful. That Mr. Carver was often accused of womanizing and that the couple used political clout to line their own pockets didn’t seem to matter to the American electorate.

But Marc Kadella’s got a more specific axe to grind. Back when Carver was governor, a fundraising stop in Minneapolis resulted in the accidental overdose—and death—of a 19-year-old girl. A Carver campaign aide’s in prison on a plea deal for manslaughter—against his lawyer Marc Kadella’s express recommendation. But when the campaign worker turns up hanged in his Colorado cell just days after the election, Kadella senses his mistrust of the Carvers is just the tip of the iceberg.

Tyranny, cover-up, and all-out Shakespearian bloodbath haunt these pages, making House of Cards look like a Barbara Walters special. Author Dennis Carstens hits political corruption and smarmy-politician caricature right on the head, in a compelling sociological hypothetical melded with a captivating murder mystery that explores just how far American politicians will go for money—and power.

House of Cards meets the Land of Trump” –Amazon 5-star reviewer

Fans of Nelson Demille, John Grisham, Richard North Patterson, and of course the most beloved lawyer sleuth of all time, Erle Stanley Gardner’s Perry Mason, will gobble up this one up. As will devotees of political thrillers like novels by Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, David Baldacci—and HOUSE OF CARDS fans in particular.

House of Cards!

This story reminded me House of Cards from the beginning. 90% of the characters are corrupt, narcissist, others trying to find the truth. Sometimes because of the barriers put in front of them having hard time. If it's not bad enough now, we might even have this plot on the headlines one day.

Thomas Jefferson Carver has Hollywood film star looks and the charisma to charm the pants off almost any woman that he desires. He also has a wife that is power obsessed and will let nothing get in her way or stop them getting into the Whitehouse, with herself being First Lady and her husband of course President of the United States.
When the campaign is in full swing an accidental over dose of a young woman in Carver’s bed threatens to end the dream and turn it into a political nightmare. The thought of this being a young woman who has lost her life is the last thing on Darla Bunton Carver’s mind, her only thought is to get this body removed from her husband’s bed and shift blame onto an innocent young man who has been talked into being the fall guy.
From the first meeting with Darla she left such a bitter taste and what begins as a cover up rapidly evolves into so much more, especially after Thomas Carver is successful and elected as President. The loose ends of the past have to be tied off permanently. I was totally engrossed in this story, the corruption, blackmail, murder and almost cult like following that surrounded the President and his First Lady, with those closest to the pair carrying out orders without question.
Darla has a much bigger goal, this First Lady wants to become the first female President of the US. Just when you think that this woman has surely done her worst she manages to go a step further.
This was a totally gripping read for me on a subject that I knew little about. Part of the story does surround a court case of yet another fall guy of the Carver dynasty. One of my favourite characters of this story has to be Lawyer Marc Kadella. What a guy! It wasn’t until after I had read this story that I discovered that a series is based round him, this book being one of them. The story reads superb as a stand alone novel but I sure do want to read more about him.
The story began as intriguing political story and ended up as a fast paced thriller, just loved it!

3.5 stars! Rounding up for Goodreads.

Admittedly, I'm not the biggest fan of political thrillers, or anything political really.  I am, however, a fan of Smith Publicity so when they sent me this book, I figured it was highly likely a good one.  I wasn't wrong!

The book reads at a fast pace with a highly motivated political couple who will stop at nothing to get what they want.  Darla is especially devious and will barrel through anything that gets in her way.  I absolutely despised her as a person and quite frankly, it was fun to hate her.  I enjoyed the law aspects of this story but it definitely did get too political for my normal liking.  Which I had expected so that's not a surprise.  What IS a surprise was how engaged I did get.  A nice surprise.  I completely agree with my friend, Jessica, that it is absolutely reminiscent of House of Cards.  And while I did enjoy that show, I did quit it after a couple of seasons (again, me and politics don't mix well).

What I found the most interesting, is reading the notes from the author afterward.  I especially liked his explanation for the ending of a particular character.  Made absolute sense and you know what Dennis, when it comes to your book, I completely agree - only your opinion really counts.  But if it makes  bit of difference, I love the reasoning behind this one particular thing.  Sorry ladies and gents, no spoilers here.   You're gonna have to read it if you want to know what the hell I'm talking about.  For those who love a good political thriller, I think this is a book that will absolutely suit you.

My first novel by this author but it certainly won't be the last.

The indication that this is a legal thriller is misleading. Although there is a trial involved, actually a military court martial, the real story is about political ambition, corruption and cover ups. This story covers a period of 12 years, or so, and two presidential administrations. Centers around the presidential ambitions of the wife of the newly elected president, who just happens to be a philanderer. Sound familiar? The wife has just one thing on her mind throughout the novel. Getting elected to the office of president, herself.

The only negative I can say about this book is the poor proofreading done before publishing. Several typos that just jump out at the reader. Missing punctuation. I had to go back several times to reread the sentence to understand what the author was saying in the dialogue due to missing commas.

Readers should also read the author's notes at the end of the story. He explains why he handled the trial the way he did. Also, why he wrote the end game with the female antagonist the way he did.

This book seemed really long. I kept thinking - when it is it ever going to end?! The timeline covers something like 10-15 years and jumps over many years (thankfully). It's an interesting story, but parts of it were drawn out to me - especially the military courtroom parts. The story revolves around Tom and Darla Carver, who are super ambitious and manage to go from winning a congressional seat to making it all the way to the White House. They will do anything to gain power and position. On the other hand, you have Marc Kadela, an honest attorney, who does what he can to do what's right.
It's a good story. I like that this author uses character's first names in describing action in the story. It's so much easier to follow who's who using first names than those authors who use the character's last names all the time.

With a slow plodding start, the author burdens the reader with fragments of the story. He overuses the word 'excellent.'
His formatting needs attention. And his arrogant attacks on reviewers is just narcissistic.

Two Elephants in this room, so we may as well talk about those before I move on to an actual Review. Although the Characters in this book are named "Carver" make no mistake they were inspired by the Clinton family. The similarities are too numerous to list here, and the differences just aren't many. I think Dennis Carstens was very brave to write and publish this work of fiction considering everything.

Marc Kadella is missing from a large portion of this book. You read a bit about him and his pals at the start of the book and then they dont reappear until the end. Not a really big deal really except its a tiny bit distracting considering that the book is a Marc Kadella Legal Mystery. On the upside, while it is distracting that Marc is missing from these pages, the story line is so very interesting you just dont mind.

This book has many moving parts, even for a Marc Kadella story, and at times you may feel as if you will need a score card to keep up, but it all ties up into a neat little bow at the end real nicely.

Murder, Sex, unfaithfulness, Great Wealth, lies, misdirection, Treason, false witness, and so so so much more. This book just has it all and covers just about every sin that there is to cover in one book. The Carver's are powerful, rich, and on the rise. Mrs. Carver is the most evil of the two and aspires to the highest office of the land. In this book, the Clinton's erm ummm Carver's (im sorry, its hard to separate the reality, from the fantasy sometimes) Make it to that office twice, once for him and once for her. Being that I absolutely hate spoilers, I wont tell you any more. You will just have to read this book for your self to see how it all turns out and if evil or good wins out the day. It is well worth the time and certainly the tiny cost of this book, to find out for your self. The book is extremely well written, and will hold your interest on every level. Even the most easily board will find this book interesting and worth the read.

Thanks to Smith Publicity for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Are you a fan of political thrillers? Are you a fan of House of Cards? Well, POLITICAL JUSTICE by Dennis Carstens is about a politically ambitious couple and they're going to stop at nothing to reach their goal - the presidency. I was really excited to see this was by a fellow Minnesotan, and I'll always love a good political thriller or some political fiction.

Enter the politically cut throat couple that is Thomas Jefferson Carver and Darla Bunton Carver. His charm and charisma have made him a popular governor, while Darla is the brains behind the operation. What's their goal? For Darla to surpass her husband and become the first woman President.

This definitely is full of House of Cards vibes, with the twist that Darla wants to become the President of the United States. It always amazes me how much goes into campaigns and how much there is to cover up. Anything can become a scandal when you're running for president. There is a lot to cover up in Thomas' past - everything from numerous affairs, money scandals, treason, and even reaching to homicide cover ups and murders. There's a little bit of everything thrown at the Carvers. As if the scandals weren't the most dangerous part, their followers with blind devotion can cause the most problems.

I loved the characters and the writing. I didn't realize this was part of a series until after I had finished it (saw on Goodreads), so it definitely reads as a standalone. This is a well-written and tense legal thriller meets political thriller. Lawyer Marc Kadella is thrown into the mix and begins to pose a threat to everything that the Carvers have fought for.

Overall, if legal and political thrillers are what you're after, then this is the next one you need to pick up!

I give this 4/5 stars!

A Mid-west lawyer takes the case of a young man who is charged with the death of a young women during a political stop by a presidential candidate and his wife. He is a patsy for the couple for whose campaign he is a worker. The candidate has a reputation of not keeping his pants zipped and his wife knows and cares not except for the need to cover up his indiscretions. The wife is also a forceful person who has grand plans for the future, getting her husband elected and the after four years following him in office for four more and if she gets her way for many more. They both are adept at milking the public coffers as well as the private ones and they have a beholden operative who is able to do the dirty work of covering things up. The lawyer looses the case and disappears from the narrative for a while as the couple make it to the white house and continue their plotting ways. When a military officer attached to a government office is charged with passing a list of names to the media our Mid-west lawyer re appears to defend the officer with whom he was acquainted. We get some court room (Military style) and the lawyer again looses the case. Enough, there is more, the wife becomes the new president elect (more dirty pool involved) but things start to go wrong for her. Read it to find out how things work out for all concerned.

We have all read (or seen) stories like this before. A politician that is morally corrupt who is an unrepentant philanderer and his ambitious, scheming wife. Here we are introduced to charismatic Governor Thomas Jefferson Carver and his wife Darla Bunton Carver who will stop at nothing, or let no-one get in the way of her lust to become the first woman President of the USA – not even the fact that her husband is involved in the death of a young woman.

I really enjoy books like this, full of intrigue and manipulation but this I really enjoyed. The goodies, are really good and the baddies, Thomas and Darla are just superbly portrayed. Avaricious, egotistical and just brilliantly sketched. Even Thomas was pleased to trip Darla up on occasion – that is how awful she is.

Running in tandem to this main storyline, is the story of Marc Kadella a lawyer in Minnesota.

How I cheered at the end of the book; I didn’t expect the ending but isn’t it nice when things work out in the right way.

If you like political intrigue, good writing and great characters read this and enjoy!

Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.

This is the seventh book I have read in this series, and it certainly ramped up the tension. This book portrays a family of political animals with the kind of devastating accuracy that many people could name the family with very little effort. I am sure many readers have to believe that real people in the political world could not possibly behave in this fashion, and I am sure many more believe they would do these things in a heartbeat if they thought they could get away with it. I am reminded of Ted Kennedy and the death of a young woman by drowning in his car. I am reminded of Richard Nixon telling the nation that he was not a crook. I am reminded of Hilary Clinton insisting that she lost the last election due to a malignant conspiracy that she insists is still operating to keep her from being elected to the highest office in the land. I am also reminded of learning in school about the wrongly convicted soldier who committed no crime except being born Jewish. This is a meticulously researched book that speaks to today's politics, and it is very readable.

This is the eighth book I've read by Dennis Carstens, and as usual, I greatly enjoyed it. This time, however, I must say I wasn't particularly fond of the fact that nearly the entire first third of the book is dedicated to a political plotline, with no mention of the lawyer, Marc.
It's only after this long section—which appears to be based on the figures of Bill and Hillary Clinton (the book was written during 2016)—that we finally meet Marc again.
I estimate that due to the political focus, nearly 150 characters were added to the book, making it impossible for the reader to keep track of them all. Furthermore, the trial description in the second third of the book was quite tedious, and I found myself skipping entire pages.
The final third made up for the second one. Now, I'll wait three months and continue with the ninth book.
My rating is between 4 and 5 stars.

If you like House of Cards, you will like this book. It is full of the behind the scenes corruption of elected officials.
It is a fast read since the author keeps you wanting to turn the page.
The author starts out by giving you one story, then moves on to more and eventually brings them all together.
Tom and Darla are a highly motivated political couple who don't seem to care who the ruin or their way to the White House. We get to meet each of the people whose lives have been taken or ruined in their quest to be the most powerful couple in the world.
The author's notes at the end of the book give a great explanation of the reason the book ended the way it did.

True Political Justice

Dennis Carstens, you are such a phenomenally good writer that even reading your grocery list would be a feast of entertainment. You provided so much legal information in these seven books that I'm practically ready to sit for the bar exam. Your writing is exemplary. You built realistic characters who are multi dimensional and appealing. The writing is indescribably engaging with the actions very ski!!fully woven into a brilliantly contrived story. Please hurry with the next set of books. I particularly liked the way you kept the true identity of the villains completely secret. We'll never know who these people could have been. Not ever.

Dennis Carstens is one of my favorite authors. His clear prose is highly descriptive of the legal realm owing to his 20-years as a practicing attorney. Carstens’ protagonist Marc Kadella is a struggling lawyer, pragmatic and honest. in “Political Justice” (the 7th novel in the series), Kadella uncovers political cover-up committed by a cast of characters that mirrors those national level elected officials in office during the three decades following the 1980s. I encourage those interested in making sense of the era to read Carstens’ surprisingly accurate novel! This murder, intrigue, and legal mystery hits close to home and is powerfully enlightening!

This is a political thriller about a "power couple" (loosely patterned after the Clintons) that is bent upon occupying the White House for 16 years and is willing to do anything that is required (including murder and treason) to make that possible. Minneapolis defense lawyer Marc Kadella becomes involved in their story when he happens to defend two people who have been set up to take the fall for some of their crimes. Kadella and his investigative end up playing a key role in finally bringing the couple to justice.

This novel helped me pass the time on a long transatlantic flight. It's one of my favorites in a good series.

Excellent read

I really enjoyed this book as I have the previous six in the series. It is quite a thought provoking story of what some people not just who have money but also power could be capable of, got me thinking anyway ;). The story is really well written and explains any legal phrases etc., In a quick concise way. As for the end I do think it was the right way for things to happen. Thank you Mr Carstens for another great book , I am now going to start book 8, can't wait 😊

Swamp creatures?

This book moved along quickly. Lots of info in the first half. I wondered how it was going to tie together. The author brought it together in an intriguing thriller. The politicians were ruthless in their drive to gain the next political prize. It illustrates how their quest for money, fame, power was foremost in their lives at the expense of the very people they were to represent. Lives of those that got in the way were cast away without any regard. Shows politicians at their worse - ( these are "swamp creatures")

Interesting Premise

This book examines political corruption at its extreme. The politicians are uniformly power-mad sociopaths with no redeeming qualities, which is certainly satisfying, but hard to swallow. The characters aren't very well developed, so we don't know what motivates them beyond ambition. The book also could have used a good editor. I found it to be too long with more attention paid to rehashing information from previous chapters than explaining why the characters were so driven. A good editor also could have corrected the grammatical issues.

I'm a big dan of Dennis Carstens and this Marc Kadella series and this book confirmed my support. DENNIS IS A VERY GOOD SUTHOR IMHO. I really like his characters, his stories, and his writing. There are always interesting twists and he always has a chapter at the end that ties up any loose ends and tells what happened as a result of the story. Of you like mysteries and crime novels you'll love this book and the entire series. I recommend you read the series in order because there are recurring characters and references to previous books.

even if you are a democrat, you will like this one!

this exciting book was almost a biography of a certain presidential family, only the names have been changed to protect the Guilty! I found three events that were placed in the wrong century (1990 not 2001). the geography was good, weather accurate, and spells were binding! it was hard to put down to get some sleep! read it and see if you agree! thanks Dennis Cardenas for a great book!

Engaging and Riveting

Best novel I have read in a very long time. I compared the Carvers to the Clintons. Although I don't know if it was intentional on the author's part, the charisma and philandering of Tom Carver and the strong power hungry greed of Darla Carvers, ran parallel to the Clintons in my mind. A must read for anyone hoping there is true justice in our great country.

Phenomenal Book That Bears A Striking Resemblance To Recent Events

I'm totally hooked on Dennis Carsten's Marc Kadella legal series. The main characters are well written, well developed, and come to life as people with whom I'd probably be close friends. Carsten's books aren't run of the mill, with easily anticipated plot lines, nor endings. If you're looking for a page turner that's hard to put down, definitely look to any of this series.

Contemporary and compelling storyline will capture your attention

Carstens'. background in law clearly gives him a decided advantage when writing this series. However, his creativity takes his writing to another level. Combining characters who strongly resemble contemporary politicians and.the use of a military court rather than civilian created an irresistible storyline.. You won't want to put it down,

Excellent

I can imagine a woman like Darla Carver! And Darla's husband, and agree with the ending decision by Dennis Carstens! I have read many, many books from excellent authors who write about the corruption in Washington, D.C. so I would not be surprised if everything in this book happens in real life! Have one author I read who refuses to reveal one of his sources real names when thanking them!
