Like a lot of other readers, I’m a big fan of Jennifer McMahon and she has become an auto-buy author for me! My introduction was BURNTOWN a couple years ago and since then I’ve picked up most of her other books. When I saw the synopsis for THE INVITED I was so ready to start it. A haunted house? Sign me up! I would definitely classify this as more of a ghost story with some mystery, not a horror story. So keep that in mind before starting!

We are immediately transported into the bog on Hattie Breckenridge’s property – she orders her young daughter, Jane, to hide and not come out until she comes to retrieve her. The town’s people are tracking Hattie down and are accusing her of being a witch. She is hung on her own property and the location of her family’s riches is buried with her. Fast forward to the present day, Helen and Nate have bought a property in Vermont and are building their dream home from the ground up. Eerie things begin to happen and Helen is determined to get to the bottom of it.

Olive is a young girl whose mother has disappeared. Olive is determined to find the treasure on the old Breckenridge property so that her mother will return home to her – after all, it was their destiny to. Olive crosses paths with Helen and Nate and must now help them with the construction of their home. As the project continues they learn that spirits can be connected to objects and that their work has only just begun.

This was a slower burn from the start. There are some creepy elements here and there at the start as Helen begins to learn the history of their property and of the Breckenridge women. There is no doubt in McMahon’s abilities to weave and blend together the past and present seamlessly. I would consider this to be more character driven and the ghost story builds as a result. If you’re looking for horror and a faster pace, then this might not be for you. If you like a layered and Gothic ghost story, then you’ll want to have this on your TBR. ...more

This was my first time reading Wendy Walker and I completely understand why people love her books. A weaving story line, different timelines, not knowing who to trust, and plenty of twists and turns. THE NIGHT BEFORE kept me turning the pages and had plenty of surprises that I didn’t see coming.

Laura hasn’t always had the best luck when it comes to men. Desperately trying to find love but with all the wrong men it seems. After a nasty break up, she returns to her childhood home to live with her sister, Rosie, and her husband Joe. Laura, Rosie, Joe, and their friend Gabe all grew up together – they have secrets from their pasts that they are trying to keep in the past. When Laura decides it’s time to get back in the dating pool, everyone is nervous for her but it’s just a first date, what could happen?

Rosie goes into panic mode when Laura hasn’t returned home the next morning. Could it be that she lost track of time and stayed the night somewhere? Could something back have happened to her? Or worse – could she have done something bad to her date? So many questions, some answers, and more doubt arises as we get Laura’s background. Doubts are raised about her date – is she the only one lying about who she is?

While I did go through this quickly, there were some parts that felt a little on the slower side. We go between Laura’s POV “the night before”, Rosie’s POV “the morning after”, and then transcripts from Laura’s meetings with her shrink when she was in New York months earlier. I think this was a well-written and constructed suspense novel. Like I said, I didn’t see a lot of those twists coming and I really liked them! The only thing that dropped my rating was that it came to a couple lulls in the middle. Overall, I would still definitely recommend this one to anyone looking for a suspense novel and I will for sure be picking up more from Walker! ...more

Last year I had read THE LIES THEY TELL by Gillian French and loved it, so when I read the synopsis for THE MISSING SEASON I was so excited when I received a copy. A small town with an urban legend that lurks in the woods. As you know, I’m a huge fan of anything reminiscent of Slenderman and urban legends in the same vein. So this was a must-read for me.

This one is set in a small town and we see solely from Clara’s perspective. As the new kid in school she struggles to find friends until she meets Bree and Sage. We get to see as their friendship blossoms and how Clara is accepted into their group with Trace and Kincaid. When Clara is told the urban legend of The Mumbler she begins to see things in the woods and hear things at night in her room. They say he only gets his power if you believe in him – once you know it can’t be unknown.

We get the high school crushes and they drama that goes along with two girls liking the same guy – and then the subsequent fallout when he chooses one over the other. The teenage pranks pulled on their high school around Halloween time. The superstitions around Halloween that they all have about The Mumbler and when he strikes – multiple kids have been killed over the years and despite them being considered freak accidents, the kids all know it’s The Mumbler.

The only thing that brought my rating down a bit was that I found it so hard to concentrate in the beginning. It was a slower build to the eerie and creepy events that I was anticipating. Once the action and suspense picked up, I was sucked in and was able to finish up the last half of the book in an under two hours. I wasn’t expecting that ending, at all. I wish there was a little more to it than the last chapter or two, but it definitely tied together everything that had been happening in this quiet little town.

Overall, a solid YA mystery and perfect for those that are fans of the genre or for someone wanting a lighter mystery to read. A creepy urban legend, dark and dense woods, and disappearing teenagers. What more could you want? ...more
