The cold war between the Campton group and Saul’s clan has finally erupted into open warfare, but the increasingly strange events that affect the abandoned city eventually silence even the most bellicose instincts: the red zone is sinking into the ground, and all of the children, regardless of their allegiance, are now trapped inside the ‘lowlands’. Their only chance to get out is to work together – if it isn’t already too late...
The growing cliff is closing the kids into the red zone, so they think to take a firetruck to reach higher ground. But they run into the missing kids – and they too now have red eyes like the monkeys!
Terry spies a kid with white hair and red eyes like the zombies, but he is only visible in mirrors….who is he, and what does he want?
Saul and Dodji leave together to try to get to the top of the cliff using parachutes, while the other kids converge back at the museum while trying to avoid the red-eyed kids hiding in the fog.
The conversation between Saul and Dodji is important, and puts into question what it means to be a leader. What’s more, there is someone in this world who is impatiently waiting for a leader…
We get a couple more clues about the fifteen families, and we also say hi to an old friend … the mysteries continue to multiply!

This award-winning series for kids continues its fine run, skirting the terrible and difficult situations faced by a bunch of children finding themselves alone in an empty city. Its success and its charm come from the creators’ firm grip on their characters, keeping their actions and reactions believable and consistent with those of real children. By this stage in the tale the true nature of their situation is becoming apparent, but this revelation has arrived hand-in-hand with the strange physical reaction of the city. Trapped within what appears to be a vast sinking section of roads and buildings the children, whose numbers have been swollen by the banding together of other groups, seek to find a way to scale the vast edifice before them, but the city continues to throw up further complications in the form of failing machinery and what appears to be the possession of some of the children’s minds.
Alone continues to strive for that difficult balance between genuine peril and not alienating its audience, a feat it’s managed to maintain throughout its run to date. Part of its success is down to the quirk of its narrative that deals with death, but even so none of the characters are casual about it and are genuinely afraid about the threats around them. But what really drives the tale forward is the excellent characterisations of the core children, not least Leila and Dodzi who repeatedly do their best in the face of adversity, never gung-ho, but compelled to do the right thing for the benefit of their group. There’s a strong lesson there about kindness and altruism that would benefit any reader.
Arguably this book isn’t even aimed at me, but I think it’s one of the finest reads available at the moment, and even my children, the core audience when the series began, still battle to be first to read the latest instalment (the eldest is 17). It’s testament to the quality of the storytelling and the strength of the characters, and also to the deepening mystery of just exactly what is going on.
Fabien Vehlmann kolejny raz trzyma czytelnika w napięciu, zabierając go w fantastyczną przygodę z wieloma tajemnicami i chwilami grozy.
Alone, by writer Fabien Vehlmann and artist Bruno Gazzotti, started out as an interesting science fiction series about a city where everyone but (certain) children have vanished, which quickly upped the ante and expanded the narrative while keeping the core mystery going. However, the previous two volumes, Eye of the Maelstrom and The Fourth Dimension and a Half changed basic parameters of the work towards fantasy rather than SF, which has felt a bit weird (and perhaps still does). It is not bad, by any means, and this seventh volumes picks up the pace a little again, which feels good. But I cannot help wondering where it is all heading at this point.
The quality of the artwork and storytelling are well up to the standard of the previous volumes, bit for all that happens to the children the overall story doesn’t seem to advance a lot until the revelation of the last couple of pages.
Seven volumes and the new one is still as surprising and creepy as the first.
When looking at it, it is a strange volume, because everything gets blurred - relationships, death, and the ground itself, literally. One doesn't know if the bad guys should be trusted, one doesn't know what is happening, one doesn't know who's going to survive.
The revelation of a character, someone only suggested through the two last volumes, scared me to death, yes, a comic character - but the way he appears, his stalking tendancies, his eyes... he is really well done and conceived and creepiness radiates from him.
As for the end, it opens a lot of doors, making you crave for more without answering your questions. All that I know is that I fear for my heroes.
