Ever since I started working at a bookstore I've seen this series almost every single day and well I was intrigued. It's such a fun little series!!!! It has cool dragons, an easy plot to follow and I can't wait to actually be able to recommend this series!

It's crazy to think of them telling Rory she can choose whatever she wants. My girl is 8 years old, she needs adult supervision. They always handle the dragon masters as if they were a bit older.
Cute addition to the series, loved when they shrunk the ice giant.

I'm a bit sad this didn't really follow through with the Rori plotline from the previous volume, but not sad enough to stop reading.

May contain spoilers!

Drake is the main character of the series. He is nice and he worries about his friends a lot. This book takes place in The Far North Lands. My favorite part was when Vulcan melted the Ice Giant, Vasty. Ice Giants do NOT like fire! I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dragons.

As a family we really love these books! A few years ago, I read the first eight books of this series to my son. My youngest daughter really enjoyed it and the three of us read them. This year my youngest has been reading them to me. And this was the first book we had not read previously. This year we found out that my nephew has been reading them and was only 1 book ahead of us. He is reading the physical books and We are reading the eBook editions. It is a great story in a wonderful series.

I have said it before, and I state it again, ‘this series really has staying power’. I have read some of the stories 4 or 5 times now. And have been reading them for over 4 years. And I still enjoy the stories as do my children. My son who thought he had outgrown these stories has been sitting in and listening to his sister read them to me again lately. It is also great to know that my brother’s family loves them as much as ours. It is fascinating to watch the kids interact and compare notes about the books that they are both reading. And to predict what will happen next based on the endings of the book, or title of the next as we queue it up.

One of the best things about this series is that it is a true series. In that each story builds upon the next. They are strong enough to be read on their own, but as a whole we get to watch the growth of the group as they come together as a team and learn to work together and support each other. And in this one we meet a new dragon master from the far north who has come seeking help. And all of this while events of the previous two stories are still not completely wrapped up. It is fantastic to have a series for readers this young that do not just reset at the beginning of the next book.

In this volume Dragon Master named Mina arrives from the north seeking help. Soon Drake and his friends are responding to her request for aid. They head north to battle an Ice Giant. And to their surprise Mina has lost her connection with her Dragon and the Ice Giant looks like he is going to win, until … You will need to read the story to find out what happens in this epic battle.

I believe this is the last volume illustrated by Damien Jones, my daughter noticed the next has a different illustrator, and Damien was already the second artist working on the series. We love the illustrations, they really add to this young readers chapter books.

This is another excellent read in a great series. These are excellent book for young readers, but also entertaining enough for older readers. I am continually impressed with the staying power of this series. After multiple reads over several years I still really enjoy returning to the Dragon Masters. And look forward too many more reads in this series, as my daughter is insistent, she will read them all to me! And she insisted we give it 5/5 stars!

I enjoyed this book because I like dragon masters books. I also enjoyed this book because I liked the part when the dragon masters defeated Vasty (an ice giant).

I've been reading this series to my 9-year-old daughter, and she continues to really enjoy it. As for myself, it's stating to feel a little stale and that there are too many characters now. That, and some of the events and character interactions seem disjointed. Hopefully the author gets back to the roots of what made this story good to begin with. On a positive note, even though the illustrator changed, the pictures maintain the same overall look and feel. My rating is 3-stars, my daughter's is 5, so I'm rounding it to 4.

My son read the whole series, so I'm pausing with my adult reads and flying through these to have our first book-talks as father and son. It's wonderful! We talk about each one, and he loves that I'm finding out stuff that he's already read. He now understands the concept of spoilers and has some fun with those.
Not gonna lie, this one was a fun read that I genuinely enjoyed. Kind of an Avengers-level climax that ends without a cliffhanger in a satisfying way. Number 10 has a tough job of restoring the momentum.

I so enjoyed returning to this series! These books are the best palette cleansers between longer and more serious reads. This one has a great mix of drama and teamwork. I like that the books now have an ongoing storyline.

I’ve been reading these with my 7 year old son, and we both enjoy them! It’s a really fun way to introduce fantasy books to kids. The stories are really simple, and he loves it when we get to meet a new dragon.

Please note that this review is written for my use as a librarian and may not appeal directly to readers. Please review at your own risk.

Accelerated Reader has this book listed as being for lower grades, or readers in Kindergarten to 3rd grade. They also have listed that this read is worth 1 AR point.

I liked this one a lot, but I love Viking stories. Mina feels like a viking. She’s a really awesome character, being a strong female viking. I also tend to enjoy tales about icy lands and ice dragons. So I was set-up to like this one. But I think the story points about apologies and forgiveness and helping your friends feel seen and appreciated are really good as well.

Caution Notes*:
None - very small children may be frightened or sad, but that’s about it.

Recommended for:
First and second graders who are into dragons, monsters, or fantasy creatures.

Summary:

-Do not read past this point if you would like to avoid spoilers-

The beginning of this story finds our heroes divided. Rori has left with the potentially evil dragon master Eko, and while the other dragon masters are trying to decide what to do, Mina shows up from the frigid north, needing assistance. Mina is a dragon master of an ice dragon, Frost, who was captured when an ice giant attacked her kingdom. He trapped everyone in the entire kingdom in ice. Only Mina escaped. The problem is, she needs a fire dragon to defeat the ice giant and Vulcan and Rori are missing. The dragon masters go to Eko’s island to tell Rori what is going on and ask for her help. Hesitantly she agrees. After some preparation and apologies to Rori, the dragon masters head to Mina’s homeland. The ice giant is very strong and he even uses Frost to help him attack the other dragons. Luckily, the dragon masters figure out how to get the upper hand and defeat the ice giant. Their actions ally the two kingdoms and smooth over things with King Roland. In the end, Rori decides to stay at the castle.

*Caution notes are not to say, don’t read the book. I only include these so that those individuals who have particular themes they do not like to read about or are not ready for their kids to read about are aware. I do not support censoring. :)

{My thoughts} – In the last book we learned that the Dragon Masters had a visitor. Her name was Mina and she is a Dragon Master from the Far North Kingdom. She had come asking for their help to defeat a Ice Giant. She said that they needed a Fire Dragon to defeat the Ice Giant.

This came as bad news to Griffith and the remaining Dragon Masters. Rori the Dragon Master to the only Fire Dragon they had had run off with Eko and Neru. They decided that they would have to locate them and see if they could talk Rori into coming back to help them, help Mina. Mina went with them and they were able to get Rori to help.

When they got to the Far North Kingdom they learned they were in for more then they’d thought. There was so much ice everywhere, and it was so cold. Rori wanted to use her Dragon to melt all the ice, even the ice on the people. She didn’t think that she could cause a bunch of harm. Ana had her Sun Dragon use her sunlight to melt the ice off as many as she could during the battle. The Ice Giant was using Mina’s Dragon to battle them. Once they got control of Mina’s Dragon back the battle went much smoother.

They were able to do a lot by working together as a group. They just needed to play up to the strengths of each Dragon. This helped them in the end.

Towards the end of the book Griffith was told by King Roland that he was going to be replaced. But then Mina dropped a letter from the air for King Roland from her King. It changed the Kings mind. The best thing that came out of it is that Rori decided to stay and train with her friends, instead of going back to be with Eko.

I look forward to continuing this story in the next book!

Dragon Masters Chill of the Ice Dragon is an exciting adventure story that will capture the imagination of young readers. The book follows the story of Mina, a girl who seeks the help of the Dragon Masters because Vastyi is attacking her kingdom, the Frost Giant. Unfortunately, Mina's dragon is frozen and unable to help, but with the help of the Dragon Masters, she sets out to save her kingdom.

One of the standout elements of this book is the richly imagined world of Dragon Masters. The author, Tracey West, has created a detailed and immersive setting full of magic and wonder. The dragons are particularly well-drawn, each with unique personalities and abilities.

The characters in Chill of the Ice Dragon are also a highlight. Mina is a brave and determined protagonist who is easy to root for, and the Dragon Masters themselves are a diverse and exciting group. Each character adds something unique to the story, from the serious-minded wizard Griffith to the mischievous Drake.

Overall, Dragon Masters Chill of the Ice Dragon is a fantastic book that will captivate young readers. With its exciting plot, well-drawn characters, and imaginative setting, it is a must-read for fans of fantasy and adventure.

This wasn't my favorite in the series. We got the interesting moral dilemmas introduced with Eko and Rori leaving with her, and then it was all completely back pedaled by Rori deciding to just leave Eko and stay with the dragon masters again. Then we go and help defeat this Ice Giant when he was originally upset about his land being taken over, and the response is too bad, you froze everyone and that was wrong so we are going to melt you down to a miniature instead of being a giant and banish you. No discussion whatsoever as to why his land was taken, or coming to a compromise so he maybe they can share the land or give a part of it back? He has a legitimate concern here and the response is just meh and he is banished again. The dragons being frozen was pretty scary and made you wonder how they would get out of it, but it was of course resolved. I'm sure this is fine and enjoyable for kids, but I had real problems with this one.

Five stars for kids, 3 stars for adults.

My children LOVE these books, and they are very fast-paced and exciting (even to me). I have a hard time not commenting on some logical fallacies & oversimplifications, not to mention the absurdity of 8-year-olds being dragon "masters" or being sent to a far-away country to battle an ice giant that bested a powerful adult wizard and save a whole kingdom that has been frozen in magical ice with zero adult supervision. BUT...as I said, this book was very fast-paced and exciting and not only kept my 7-year-old and 3 1/2-year-old riveted, but also conned me into reading the entire book in one sitting, resulting in an absurdly late bedtime. So I will go with a 4-star rating for the enthusiasm it engendered in my kids and for the attempt to have a couple of non-white secondary characters.

Mina from the Far North needs a Fire dragon to save her kingdom. She comes to Griffith for help. The only problem is Rory and the Fire Dragon ran away at the end of the last book.

This is one of our favorite series and this book helped mix things up from the form the plots had been falling into with the couple previous books. Like all the books in this series the plot moves quickly and takes readers on a magical journey to new places. The quest is well written but it is the world that West has created that keep my son and I coming back for more. Every page is illustrated so it keeps even the youngest reader engaged whether you are reading it to them or they are a middle grade reading reading it on their own.

One of the best book series for emerging and newly independent readers, Dragon Masters does not disappoint. The storyline is engaging for both boys and girls, and they are worth the purchase due the the re-readability. Every one of my nieces and nephews has loved this series and read it multiple times, including younger children who are working hard and struggling for each word and older children for whom the story is technically far below their reading level. The stories are that greally good. The main characters cooperate to solve problems in a fantasy world. Each book is episodic, and the series has some long-term plot elements, but they don't detract from enjoyment of each individual book.

So, I guess Griffin didn't consider asking the king if they can go off and save another kingdom? And being frozen doesn't hurt anyone? Where did the giant go?? And if Hulda can unfreeze everyone easily, why didn't she do that earlier with the frozen dragons?

I wonder how long everyone has been frozen, since Mina had to travel slowly the whole way. From a purely logical point of view of the timeline, there's no way that Mina could have seen the fire dragon in Hulda's gazing ball, since the kids haven't been training very long. Her country would have been frozen before the kids got together.

Roland is a PITA as usual. This book was slightly better than the previous, but that's not saying a whole lot. That being said, they are intended for very young readers.

Danger... quests... and dragons! Adventure has once again arrived at the Kingdom of Bracken. When Mina, a dragon master, arrives from the Far North Lands... you learn about the fabled Ice Giant. Mina's quest is to find the one dragon that will keep her kingdom from being frozen forever!

Fantasies have an amazing way of unlocking or fears of "inabilities," and bringing forth our inner strengths. This series is a must for every beginner reader who enjoys a quest into a fantastical kingdom!

My kids were done with their Scholastic Branches books by the time the Dragon Masters came out (but the Branches were essential to their road to literacy!) My friends with younger kids rave about this series and I finally got to read one today in the name of research. Great premise of a story and plenty to love with dragons and kids as powerful dragon masters. Highly recommend for a 5-8 bridging with early chapter books!

This is a great series and this entry is a lot of fun. I liked the complexity of the adventure here-it isn't easy to conquer this latest foe and it almost looks like the dragon masters will fail! And I liked how an old friend came back revealing a kind of complexity of relationships, at least for a book aimed at this age group. In general, this series does such a great job keeping it simple while introducing some nuances and a few twists and turns.

It's been a little while since we finished this one, but I recall it being a bit more interesting than some of the previous installments.

Especially by the time you're at the 9th book, you have to know what to expect from these from the standpoints of things like plot and character development. For me, it's a fun, safe, and nicely illustrated read at bedtime with the kids. These books are quite short, though, so we get through them very quickly.

The dragon masters go on a crazy adventure to save a foreign land from an Ice Giant.

As they battle the Ice Giant, they find a way to thaw Rori's resolve to leave the group.

The scene where they defeat the Ice Giant is pretty comical and the illustrations are perfect.

Mina and her Ice Dragon are fun additions and I hope we see them again in another adventure.
