What a lovely, fast paced, adventurous romance!!
Esme loved Charles a long time ago, but he never seemed to notice her. One day, he just up and disappeared after losing the woman he loved to another.
Two years have passed, and Esme has arrived in Scotland to attend a conference for the Society of Perfumers. From there she hopes to travel to Paris and earn enough money to help her sisters, who desperately need rescuing from a life of poverty.
The last person on earth she expected to encounter was Charles Westley Brittle. Not only does she encounter him, they literally run into each other, and she saves his life in the process, but receives a nice, warm kiss as her reward.
‘Courage is no more than surviving fear from one moment to the next’
However, Charles needs Esme’s help in sniffing out a special dog he plans to steal in order to return it to its rightful owner.
Unable to resist the promise of adventure- or Charles- Esme finds herself caught up in Charles’ criminal exercises, even after she discovers he is a living, breathing Pirate!!
Charles has a complicated past, but he only wants to free himself of the life he’s trapped in and right the wrongs he committed. With Esme’s help, maybe he can get a fresh start in life, for both their sakes.

I love a good Pirate tale, but, alas, they are far and few between these days. So, the title of this novella, which is part of the ‘Devil’s Duke’ series, caught my eye, and piqued my interest immediately. To top it all off, Katharine Ashe is one of my favorite historical romance authors, and as such, is one of the rare few who can tempt me away from my ‘romance diet’.
I really enjoyed this short, but action packed novella, and loved Esme and Charles’ love story! The couple has an amazing chemistry and shared the most delightful dialogue between them. I loved it when Esme constantly referred to Charles by his full name -Charles Westley Brittle- and the way they worked together to accomplish their goals and the sweet gestures they made in order to selflessly help one another.
The, oh so intriguing, Gabriel Hume, makes a cameo appearance, and has me practically foaming at the mouth to read ‘The Duke’ coming this fall.
Overall, this is a short, but a delightful and very romantic addition to the series, you won’t want to miss.

What I Liked:
This novella was an absolute delight to read. I'm up to date with the Devil's Duke series and I actually think this is my favorite so far. Not that The Rogue and The Earl were bad - but this novella was so fun and heartwarming. It has crossover with The Scoundrel & I, featuring Esme Astel (who is Gabrielle Flood's friend) and Charles Brittle (from the Brittle & Sons print shop at which Gabrielle worked). This novella is an excellent addition to the series but also a fine standalone story.
Esme Astel hasn't seen Charles Brittle in nearly two years, so imagine her surprise when he comes running down the alley on a rainy night, silently pleading with her not to give him away as the police search for him. Everyone thought he'd left for good, or was dead. As it would turn out, Charlie Brittle joined a ship two years ago, and then the ship was taken over by pirates, and he became a pirate by necessity. He is back - well, in Scotland - in order to complete a mission to get another pirate off his back. Esme has loved Charlie for years, and seeing him again is a dream come true. But he is full of mystery and danger, and not quite the same man from two years ago. And her current dream is to live in Paris as an apprentice to a perfumer. In this story, dreams come true for both Esme and Charlie, in the sweetest and most hopeful of ways.
From the start, this book is full of sweet romance and yummy tension. You can practically feel the chemistry between Charlie and Esme, from the first pages and onward. This isn't a second-chance romance, though Esme and Charlie knew each other for years. Esme was secretly in love with Charlie for years, but she was sure that he was in love with Gabrielle - which is why he left. But Charlie has never loved Gabrielle like that, and he left for different reasons. During his years away, only one woman occupied his thoughts, the woman he was too shy to whom he was too shy to speak up.
Esme is a sweet and tough young lady, with big dreams and a big heart. She has always had a knack for distinguishing smells, hence why she has gone into the perfume business. She is in Scotland for a perfumer's meeting, and she hopes to get an apprenticeship with one of the perfumers of Paris. Then, she can starting saving money to move her two sisters and mother out of her wretched uncle's house.
Charlie is every inch a pirate - big, broad, unsmiling, up to some scheme, and running from the law. However, he is a good man, and though he denies it, a gentleman. He is selfless and caring when it comes to Esme and her family. He isn't an alpha male hero, but rather a seemingly hard yet sweet man who is protective to a fault.
The two of them together was always fun and sweet to watch. The romance was adorable and lovely. This was a novella so there weren't too many sexy times, but the few that were there were steamy and also tender. I loved every interaction between these two.
The story doesn't just deal with Esme and Charlie falling in love - there is a fun plot involving stealing a dog (whaaaaat), going to a brothel to find said dog (omg), and of course Esme trying to secure an apprenticeship with a perfumer. There is plenty going on besides the romance, though the romance is absolutely lovely!
One of the best aspects of this book was the lack of drama! You know how there is always drama between the couple, at the climax, in romance novels? There wasn't too much in this book, and any conflict was resolved in a sensible and sweet manner. Both characters went after what they wanted (each other), when they really realized what they left. In general, this book didn't have drama. I love how agreeable Charlie and Esme were. Esme knew what she wanted, Charlie knew what he wanted, they sometimes butt heads, but they also listened to each other. I loved that.
Props to Ashe for writing such a great story in a shorter page limit. I don't know what this says about me but I've really enjoyed her novellas, possibly more than her Devil's Duke full-length novels.
What I Did Not Like:
Of course I wish there were more sexy times! And I was also hoping to see Charlie confront his family (father and brother) at some point. That would have been symbolic of Charlie leaving behind the past and only looking forward (with Esme). But that's okay, I can come up with that scenario on my own and imagine a great resolution to that.
Would I Recommend It:
I definitely recommend the novellas that Ashe has written recently - this one, and The Scoundrel & I. Both novellas can be read as standalones, though they have crossover characters. They are fun, less dramatic, lacking miscommunication conflicts and forced conflicts, and very heartwarming. Also, I love how the novellas deal with "common" folk of historic England/Scotland, and not the nobility and the Ton. If you're looking for something different in historical romance...

4.5 stars. I'll round down to 4 stars for now. This book was incredibly fun and romantic and very much worth the read. If you're ever curious about Ashe's stories, try this one or The Scoundrel & I! Or her Prince Catchers series. And then go from there!

In the Pirate and I, we have a short yet sweet novella that Katharine Ashe brings to us. I haven't had a chance to pick this author up lately, but when I saw the title, I just knew I had to grab this one up, I just can't resist those sexy "pirates" . Now I will say that while I enjoyed this novella quite a bit, I did feel a little loss at times. Maybe if I had read the previous books in the series it might have made a bit more sense. However I did enjoy seeing these two people that once were friends and close to each other, find one another again although a bit differently. Our hero, disappeared for two years, being forced to work on a ship as a pirate, and then reappers needing help so he can disappear for good. I liked seeing these two connect again, and their interactions were quite entertaining. The heroine is spirited, driven and sweet natured. I love seeing how she wants to pursue her own dreams. There are some adventures, sneaky characters that you fall in love with, and a charming dog to add a nice touch to a sweet yet sexy romance. Katharine Ashe delivers a wonderful and endearing love tale with The Pirate and I!!

Plan to continue the series
I read the first two books a while back. At the time, I was not motivated to finish the series. I decided to read this novella as my Pirate for the 2018 RATA challenge.
It is a sweet novella. I enjoyed the difference in economic setting from most HR. Neither are titled or wealthy. The romance does not take place at balls (mostly) or society functions. The hero Charlie is more than he seems at first. He has good character within him that even living the life if a pirate for 21 months cannot eradicate. Esme has strength of character as well. They are a good match. Of course, it has a happy ending.
The first two books were memorable enough, I plan to not re-read but just move on to book 3.

The Pirate and I is a sweet, little novella that has elements of adventure, self-discovery, and love, with the added bonus that it can be read as a stand alone.
This story is most closely related to Ashe's other series novella, The Scoundrel and I. It revolves around a printer's younger son and a young woman with a "nose" for perfume, which is refreshing since neither is a part of the nobility. Esme Astell was in love with Charlie Brittle for years when she worked across the street from his printing office in her perfume shop, but she always thought he loved her friend, Gabrielle Flood. When Gabrielle falls for a naval captain (see The Scoundrel and I), Esme thinks she may have a chance, but Charlie leaves and Esme's heart is crushed to pieces. The Pirate and I takes place a year after The Scoundrel and I, with both Charlie and Esme being totally different people. Charlie has been at sea, while Esme has finally decided to pursue her dream of a perfume apprenticeship in France.
The strength of this novella was the pacing and the description of the shift in feelings between the two leads. Despite its shortened length, the story was a potent mix of adventure, humor, angst, and romance. Both leads had their crosses to bear, and they were at times vulnerable, sexy, and easy to relate to. I also liked seeing more of what Charlie thought since in Scoundrel and I, only Esme's perspective is presented. His thoughts and motivations were not what I expected at all!
Anyway, I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it for anyone looking for a nice read, even if you haven't been following the series. It was a delightful escape and one of my favorites of Ashe's work in some time (this reminded me more of the tone/style from her Rogues of the Sea or her Prince Catchers series than her Falcon Club series). Highly recommend!

Esme Astell has worked at a perfume shop on Gracechurch Street in London for five years. Her efforts had increased the sales of the shop but, her employer would not increase her wages. One of her London clients appreciates Esme’s sensory abilities and arranges for her to attend a meeting of the Society of Perfumers, in Scotland. Esme spent a good portion of her savings to travel to Scotland in hopes that she would be offered an apprenticeship at an elite Paris perfume shop.
Esme encounters a criminal on her way home from the meeting. She is stunned to discover that the criminal is Charlie Brittle, who worked at the printing shop across from the perfume shop in London. Esme had been secretly in love with him for years and was devastated when Charlie disappeared from London and was presumed dead.
Charlie needs Esme to help him find a dog. He needs the dog in exchange for his freedom. Charlie has a plan to leave Scotland for America and he is determined to have his freedom. Ms. Ashe’s descriptive writing is enhanced by the adding the sense of smell throughout the novel. I could imagine drinking black tea and eating oven fresh bread at the Hart and Rose pub with Charlie and Esme and smelling the perfume, candlewax and fabrics at the ball.
Katharine Ashe does a superb job balancing the romance and intrigue in this story. The romance between the couple is enchanting and the author’s lush, descriptive, sensual voice shines when they couple make love. Charlie cherishes Esme and his feelings are conveyed in both his actions and words. Esme recognizes that Charlie has changed. She asks about his scars and burns and accepts Charlie as the man he has become, not the man she knew two years ago. The secondary characters of Pate and Rory added to the underlying feeling of suspense the author created throughout the novel. The conclusion had several surprising plot twists which surprised and delighted me!
Katharine Ashe’s novellas read as full length novels—the characters are well developed and there are several intricate plotlines.
This is the perfect weekend read –especially for those of us who are looking forward to reading The Duke!

Esme Astell had saved all her money from her work in a perfumer shop in London to go to Edinburgh for a perfumers’ meeting. Her dream is to go to Paris and learn how to be a perfumer: she has the nose. But Esme never thought she would see Charlie Brittle again, after twenty one months. Ms. Ashe paints a layered atmosphere imbued with scents, the scenery’s colours muted in the Scottish rain. Charlie has filled out in the time he was away, and Esme is even more mesmerised than before his absence, but now an aura of danger surrounds him: Charlie had become a pirate. The author’s sharp descriptions made me see Esme’s world through her eyes, as well as experience her inner thoughts and feelings.
A song, a dance, a few kisses, and Ms. Ashe had me completely lost in this exquisite love story. The author’s sumptuous and wonderfully evocative prose shines, and the dialogues are simply dazzling. THE PIRATE AND I is a perfect example of slow burn brilliantly executed: the sex scenes are especially sensuous and lovely, and I loved that Charlie was a real gentleman. There are also exceptional secondary characters, such as the delightful Monsieur Cadence and young Rory, and a brief appearance of the Devil’s Duke.
Katharine Ashe’s writing has never been more gorgeous, and the ending was exactly what I wished for and didn’t think I would get. THE PIRATE AND I is yet another exquisite book by Katharine Ashe who, hard to believe, gets better all the time.

A sparkling, fun Regency romance novella set in Edinburgh (one of my favorite cities in the world!) and involving the hunt for a stolen dog, a smart, independent heroine who's determined to pursue her career no matter what it costs her (and doesn't have to change her mind about that to get a happy ending), a hero who just wants to quietly look after books but has been forced into becoming a reluctant pirate against his will, fabulous banter between them, and a love scene in an exquisitely described library. Definitely for adults (as I feel compelled to add, since I have a lot of people who follow me here for my MG books), and really enjoyable. It stands perfectly well on its own, but the moment I finished it, I bought the linked novella that's set beforehand with a different couple (The Scoundrel and I). It was just the right kind of frothy, fun, light read for me to discover on a stressed-out, tired week! I'm going to be hunting down all of Katharine Ashe's other Regencies afterward. :)

Esme Astell loved Charlie Brittle, the printer's son who worked across the street from the perfume shop she worked in. Charlie disappeared almost 2 years ago and is believed dead. She leaves London for Edinburgh to attend the Society of Perfumers meeting hoping to get a better job in Paris. Imagine her surprise when she sees Charlie alive! He needs her help to sever his ties with the pirate he has been slaving for since his disappearance. Between attending her meeting and helping Charlie, she discovers he loves her too. Now the problem is freeing him from the pirate and getting a job.
Novellas are too short to ruin the great story Katharine Ashe has written. Her novellas are as good as her books. There is a lot more going on than the little I've told you. I highly recommend this book.

An adventuresome romp
3.5 stars ✨ This is a well-written second-chance friends-to-lovers novella with a little steam. I liked that Esme and Charlie had unconventional occupations (perfumer and book expert). I also liked that Esme is intrepid, clever, and a go-getter. I appreciate that Charlie is truly a good guy. Another plus- there's a dog. The last plus - it's free.
The reason I didn't give it a higher score is because I felt a little lost, like I'm missing so many details. This is the first Katharine Ashe I've read and it's in the middle of a series. Not a good introduction.
Also, I think the title doesn't really fit. I was waiting for them to get into a boat/ship, but they never did. That was a tad disappointing.
Overall, a good book.

Another wonderful addition to the Devil's Duke Series. This novella is about Charlie Brittle and Esme Astell. Esme works in a shop across the street from Charlie's family printing business. She secretly loved him and he didn't know that she existed. Then one day Charlie disappeared and never returned. Two years later Esme is in Scotland attending the Society of Perfumers to learn and obtain a post as an apprentice to a master perfumer and move to Paris.
Walking back to her boardinghouse one night she literally runs into Charlie. He has changed so much physically. If she didn't recognize his scent she would not have known who he was. Charlie pretends not to know who she is and disappears into the night.
When Charles appears again it is to ask Esme to help him find a dog that will buy his freedom from the pirate that he is being pursued by. He needs Esme nose to sniff out the scent and lead him to the dog. Charlie has been enslaved on a pirate ship for the past 21 months having suffered torture and other cruelties, he is not the same man he used to be and will never be able to go home. So begins the adventure that will lead Esme and Charlie on a path brimming with danger, excitement and a new beginning for both.
Katharine is one of my favorite Historical Romance Authors. Her stories are original. Her characters are intelligent, strong, brave and a joy to get to know. Her writing is sensual and beautiful. She is also historically accurate and I learn something new with each book she writes. This is a novella that reads like a full length novel, full of hair raising peril, unforgettable characters and a Happily Ever After. I recommend this book to anyone who loves superb stories that will leave you wanting more.

A fast paced short story, intriguing from start to finish.
Charles Brittle has always been a bookish quite young man, never daring to reveal his love for the beautiful young woman, that works in the perfume shop across the street, lest his brother try and take her for himself.
Esme Astell has secretly loved Charles but when he disappears one day she's heartbroken. Time to move on she accepts a position to attend a course with the Society of Perfumers with the opportunity for an apprenticeship in France.
An encounter in an alley one evening has Esme wondering if her nose recognized a certain familiar smell. A kiss from the young man and she knows that the man she's loved is alive, the same but yet different.
Charles needs Esme to help him retrieve a stolen dog for his freedom, of course Esme is willing to help him not wanting to part with him just yet.
What ensues is the romance and love affair that Charles and Esme embark on. Each knows that their time together is short and they try to make as many memories as possible. My favourite scene - when they are trapped together in a room at Mrs. Eagan's brothel while trying not to get caught, Charles asks her "Moan", he whispers "Moan as though you are enjoying this!" Who wouldn't....the rest you have to read I know you are going to love it.

I don't read too much historical romance but I went to a Barnes & Noble event where Katharine Ashe spoke. She was amazing and funny. So when I needed a pirate book for COYER, this seemed like a great fit even though it is in the middle of the Devil's Duke series . It is different than what I expected but a great surprise.
Even though it is historical, the main female character, Esme, is quite strong and independent. She is exceedingly competent at her profession. Her employer relies on her and gives no opportunity to advance. Esme works hard to secure a place at a conference where she might get an apprenticeship with a top talent in her profession.
Esme runs into her old crush Charles who disappeared a few years ago. Charles was the main force working in his family's business. They have a lot in common, both being the primary workers and receiving little or no credit for it. Now Charles is a pirate and seems to be in trouble with the police and more. What has happened to him? Is he the scoundrel he appears to be? Esme is still attracted to him and wants to know.
I love this brave and crazy adventure they undertake. Esme and Charles get to know each other, reluctantly. I love Esme's high spirits and Charles' integrity. The Pirate & I is a fun romp with some spicy scenes and made me want to read more in this series.

Despite the name of the book there wasn’t really any swashbuckling or much presence of pirates yet the story included a bit of adventure and plenty of romance.
I had trouble following the storyline when it started and it wasn’t until way past the middle part of the book that everything started to make sense. I think some of that had to do with the fact that this novella is part of a series and that to fully enjoy it other books in the series will need to be read first.
All in all it was still entertaining and different what with Esme’s unique talent, the theft of a dog, and a rogue trying not to fall again for the woman he once thought lost to him.

The Pirate and I by Katharine Ashe was such a fun read. The story was humorous and cleverly written. It is a very engrossing read, I stayed up super late just to finish it. I loved Esme and Charles. Separate, they are wonderful, together they are amazing! I couldn’t get enough of them. I highly recommend this novella!

This picks right up from another novella of the author titled The Scoundrel and I. I realized this about 20 pages into the book and went back and re-read that novella out of curiousity but this was really not necessary at all. The book can stand-a-lone for sure. I actually liked it better than The Scoundrel and I - the characters were more likeable and relatable and had great chemistry. I really liked Esme. She was so spunky and vibrant that it was fun to discover more about her personality and the reader wasn’t the only one as the hero, Charles, was discovering her to be a revelation as well.
The story was very complicated and hard to follow at times. I marveled at where the idea must have come from to include a quest for a dog in exchange for freedom. I have to say though that many of Katherine Ashe’s books contain creative and complex plots and this really makes her unique. It’s hard to know what might happen next and I appreciate that as too many times books are so predictable.
This is a pleasant, sweet and endearing book that I tremendously enjoyed. It wasn’t too short and actually felt like a full and complete novel. Absolutely worth reading!

This is an AMAZING summer read! It is hard to find a story that is romantic and precious. Esme has her head on her shoulders and she knows what she wants out of life... And that is not Charles. He hurt her heart once already, so why go through that again! (But how can she resist!?) He had never noticed her before, but now that he needs her help, he's climbing in her windows (Hide ya' kids! Hide your wife! Sorry, I know it's lame, but i giggled. And now the song is in your head :-D ).
Charles has gotten himself into a pickle and he needs Esme to fix his problems. But while he is trying to work everything out in his head, his heart is thinking of a girl from his past with soft lips and a serious disposition.

The Pirate and I is a delightful, romantic and utterly charming novella set in between books two and three of Katharine Ashe’s current series Devil’s Duke. Our reluctant pirate is Charlie Brittle, and his true love is Esme Astell, a perfumer whom he once knew in another – better – life. Fans will recognize Charlie – of Brittle and Sons, Publishers – and a few other characters who make cameos in this story, but it isn’t necessary to read the earlier books to enjoy it. Although they are all EXCELLENT, and I recommend you read them anyway. Stat. Just saying.
As the story opens, Esme Astell is happily reflecting on the opening day of the Society of Perfumers annual meeting. She’s worked in a London perfume shop for the past four years and despite helping the shop increase its sales by 400%, her employer has refused to increase her meager salary. She’s spent the majority of her life’s savings to get to the meeting in Edinburgh, and is determined to gain the attention of a pre-eminent Parisian perfumer and earn an apprenticeship with him. The first day doesn’t go quite as planned – she broke three bottles of scent – but she’s happy, confident and enjoying her walk home when she’s startled by the sound of footsteps pounding up behind her. A man runs past with a group of policeman hard on his heels. She’s frozen in place as she watches the man circle back and then squeeze into a hiding place directly across from her. The unlikely duo stare at each other and as they hear the policemen returning, the man, using only his eyes, seems to implore Esme not to give him up. For reasons she’s reluctant to examine too closely… she doesn’t – and she’s startled (and thrilled) when the man then grabs and kisses her. But even more shocking? Is the sudden realization that she recognizes his scent. It’s Charles Brittle, the book publisher she pined after for years – and who vanished without a trace two years ago.
Charles Brittle didn’t mean to kiss his savior but couldn’t seem to help himself. When she whispers his name as he’s running off, he’s shocked to recognize her voice – it’s Esme Astell, the woman he secretly pined after for years while he worked for his father in London.
Esme can’t believe Charlie is alive. She secretly mourned him after his disappearance two years ago, but when he surprises her a second time that night – climbing in through her window, telling her he needs help – her happiness at seeing him again is tempered by her irritation over his presumption and casual reappearance with no explanation for his absence. She immediately goes on the offensive, but Charlie doesn’t give her any answers and instead tells her to meet him later that evening. The chemistry between them is intense – Esme can’t stop looking at Charlie and admiring his new, muscular body, long hair and beautiful eyes, and Charlie can barely keep his hands to himself and not kiss his beautiful Esme all over again – but he reins himself in, climbs out the window and waits for her to arrive for their meeting. She doesn’t come.
Charles lies in wait for Esme when she departs for the meeting the following morning and after a ‘spirited’ conversation about her non-appearance the previous evening, negotiates with her for her help. Esme wants to know where he’s been for the past two years, and when he surprises her by promising to tell her, she agrees to meet him later that night. Esme spends the afternoon focused on perfumes, determinedly not (ahem) thinking about Charlie, his muscles or THAT KISS, and Charlie bides the time honing his plan and determinedly not (ahem) thinking about Esme, her beautiful lips and body, or THAT KISS. The rest of The Pirate and I unfolds much like that first twenty-four hours: Charles mistakenly assumes Esme will do what he asks, she invariably does something different, Charlie gets frustrated but can’t help admiring her sense of adventure and independent spirit, and then they both spend time apart longing for each other.
When they finally meet, Charles sketches in only the barest details about his past and how he became a pirate – much to Esme’s disappointment. She asks questions, but because there’s nothing happy or romantic about his past two years, he deftly dodges them. Eventually Charlie reveals why he needs Esme’s help: it’s slightly bonkers and strangely charming, but Esme can’t resist the prospect of adventure in the company of this new version of Charlie and can’t help being amused by his helpful band of mini-pirates.
This is such a delightful and sweet pairing! Esme is bright, beautiful, wise and wonderful. She left her beloved family behind to find a position in London, and works diligently to pave the way for them to eventually join her there – or in Paris. Confident in her talent, brave and loyal, she secretly longed for Charlie for years, and finds herself even more deeply attracted to him now. She’s also very aware of her physical response to him and more than willing to take advantage of his inability to resist kissing or touching her. And Charlie – oh reader! He’s delicious. Quiet and reserved on the outside, he’s chock full of lust and wicked, naughty thoughts whenever Esme is near. He’s a kind and attentive father figure to his band of ragtag pirate/helpers, and the perfect foil to Esme’s impetuous, mischievous side. There are twists, shenanigans, secret hotel rendezvous and tearful goodbyes – and also some of the hottest and sexiest love scenes Ms. Ashe’s has ever written.
I love romance novels largely because of the happily ever afters, but I think the resolution of this darling novella is one of my favorites. It’s all a bit too neat and tidy BUT I LIKED IT ANYWAY. Ms. Ashe masterfully delivers all that you hope for – and more. It’s a romantic fairytale that I never wanted to end.
As the story opens, Esme Astell is happily reflecting on the opening day of the Society of Perfumers annual meeting. She’s worked in a London perfume shop for the past four years and despite helping the shop increase its sales by 400%, her employer has refused to increase her meager salary. She’s spent the majority of her life’s savings to get to the meeting in Edinburgh, and is determined to gain the attention of a pre-eminent Parisian perfumer and earn an apprenticeship with him. The first day doesn’t go quite as planned – she broke three bottles of scent – but she’s happy, confident and enjoying her walk home when she’s startled by the sound of footsteps pounding up behind her. A man runs past with a group of policeman hard on his heels. She’s frozen in place as she watches the man circle back and then squeeze into a hiding place directly across from her. The unlikely duo stare at each other and as they hear the policemen returning, the man, using only his eyes, seems to implore Esme not to give him up. For reasons she’s reluctant to examine too closely… she doesn’t – and she’s startled (and thrilled) when the man then grabs and kisses her. But even more shocking? Is the sudden realization that she recognizes his scent. It’s Charles Brittle, the book publisher she pined after for years – and who vanished without a trace two years ago.
Charles Brittle didn’t mean to kiss his savior but couldn’t seem to help himself. When she whispers his name as he’s running off, he’s shocked to recognize her voice – it’s Esme Astell, the woman he secretly pined after for years while he worked for his father in London.
Esme can’t believe Charlie is alive. She secretly mourned him after his disappearance two years ago, but when he surprises her a second time that night – climbing in through her window, telling her he needs help – her happiness at seeing him again is tempered by her irritation over his presumption and casual reappearance with no explanation for his absence. She immediately goes on the offensive, but Charlie doesn’t give her any answers and instead tells her to meet him later that evening. The chemistry between them is intense – Esme can’t stop looking at Charlie and admiring his new, muscular body, long hair and beautiful eyes, and Charlie can barely keep his hands to himself and not kiss his beautiful Esme all over again – but he reins himself in, climbs out the window and waits for her to arrive for their meeting. She doesn’t come.
Charles lies in wait for Esme when she departs for the meeting the following morning and after a ‘spirited’ conversation about her non-appearance the previous evening, negotiates with her for her help. Esme wants to know where he’s been for the past two years, and when he surprises her by promising to tell her, she agrees to meet him later that night. Esme spends the afternoon focused on perfumes, determinedly not (ahem) thinking about Charlie, his muscles or THAT KISS, and Charlie bides the time honing his plan and determinedly not (ahem) thinking about Esme, her beautiful lips and body, or THAT KISS. The rest of The Pirate and I unfolds much like that first twenty-four hours: Charles mistakenly assumes Esme will do what he asks, she invariably does something different, Charlie gets frustrated but can’t help admiring her sense of adventure and independent spirit, and then they both spend time apart longing for each other.
When they finally meet, Charles sketches in only the barest details about his past and how he became a pirate – much to Esme’s disappointment. She asks questions, but because there’s nothing happy or romantic about his past two years, he deftly dodges them. Eventually Charlie reveals why he needs Esme’s help: it’s slightly bonkers and strangely charming, but Esme can’t resist the prospect of adventure in the company of this new version of Charlie and can’t help being amused by his helpful band of mini-pirates.
This is such a delightful and sweet pairing! Esme is bright, beautiful, wise and wonderful. She left her beloved family behind to find a position in London, and works diligently to pave the way for them to eventually join her there – or in Paris. Confident in her talent, brave and loyal, she secretly longed for Charlie for years, and finds herself even more deeply attracted to him now. She’s also very aware of her physical response to him and more than willing to take advantage of his inability to resist kissing or touching her. And Charlie – oh reader! He’s delicious. Quiet and reserved on the outside, he’s chock full of lust and wicked, naughty thoughts whenever Esme is near. He’s a kind and attentive father figure to his band of ragtag pirate/helpers, and the perfect foil to Esme’s impetuous, mischievous side. There are twists, shenanigans, secret hotel rendezvous and tearful goodbyes – and also some of the hottest and sexiest love scenes Ms. Ashe’s has ever written.
I love romance novels largely because of the happily ever afters, but I think the resolution of this darling novella is one of my favorites. It’s all a bit too neat and tidy BUT I LIKED IT ANYWAY. Ms. Ashe masterfully delivers all that you hope for – and more. It’s a romantic fairytale that I never wanted to end.

When Kathleen Ashe released the excerpt I was incredibly excited and intrigued. I couldn't wait to get my hands on this nouvella. Esme is a perfume expert who has an excellent nose for scents - she is in Scotland trying to get an apprenticeship when she bumps into a criminal in an alleyway. To her surprise, her senses tell her this is Charlie Brittle, a man that disappeared 2 years ago suddenly, a man that she used to have a secret crush on. Charlie is different now, rougher, larger, and he needs her help to gain his freedom.
For the most part this story was what it promised to be, but I was expecting a little darker, a little more romantic. I'm generally not a fan of suspense-romance but the quests seems a little silly for a pirate. She has to help Charlie find a man who has a dog he wants to steal back. (Seems a little silly right?)
While trying to recover this dog, Charlie discovers there's a whole lot more to Esme than what he had perceived in his past. She's adventurous. She rushes to help more than once, but surprisingly their situations never lands them close to any real danger. It all wraps up very neatly, maybe too much so (see below spoiler). Generally you have to be prepared to suspense disbelief in this story.
Both characters are fun to get in the head of. They are likable, but I think in making them so good made them a little unrealistic. For example, (some last chapters spoilers ahead) The side characters are also very one dimensional, generally good and kind or bad. But despite minor flaws, I am not denying I had an enjoyable enough time reading this story. It was easy to finish this all in one swoop. Katharine is a good story teller and the writing is impeccable.

Not what I expected with a title like that but still surprisingly very good. They were just so cute together and this was a perfect quick novella to help me out of a slump.

Katharine Ashe’s flair for writing historical romances with engaging characters, a touch of darkness, and entertaining plots was absolutely evident in The Pirate and I. This quick novella packed a ton of emotion into it and had me cheering our hero and heroine on from the start.
“You might be a pirate, Charles Westley Brittle, but you are one of the most decent men I have ever known.”
“If you knew what I was thinking now, you would not think me so decent.”
I am definitely a fan of Katharine Ashe’s writing style and this short story was a perfect example why. It moved along at a fairly fast pace but it worked well given the circumstances in which our characters found themselves. The dialogue was fresh and quick-witted, making me laugh at times and sigh happily at other times. But I think it was the way Ashe described Esme and Charlie’s emotions, that longing they felt for each other, that kept me wrapped up in this story. When I saw this title I assumed it was going to be about pirates and images of the high seas and swashbuckling sword fights came to mind. The Pirate and I ended up being a lot different to what I was imagining. I would say the title is a little misleading because it really has nothing to do with prates and the high seas, at all.
Still, The Pirate and I was nice enough. It was sweet and the characters had good chemistry. It kept me entertained buy didn't blow me away.

What’s it About? Esme Astell fell hopelessly in love with respectable bookmaker Charles Brittle from afar only for him to disappear without a word. Two years later she runs into Charlie in Scotland but he’s definitely not the same man she remembers. He’s big, dangerous, and on the run from the police. At first she thinks he doesn’t remember her but then when he shows up in her rented room all but begging for her help, she doesn’t hesitate and the two end up on an adventure that Esme never dreamed of.
Overall reaction to the story? I could not put this novella down! I’ve read Katharine Ashe before but I still consider myself a newbie to her books. I didn’t get to start this series with the first book *wails* but I didn’t have any trouble following along with this story since the story surrounds just the two main characters. Charlie and Esme’s story was so dashing and romantic; I didn’t want it to end! The Pirate and I definitely didn’t feel like a novella, it felt more like a full length novel from start to finish.
I know Charlie and Esme were already established characters from a previous book but I’m glad Katharine Ashe still gave a little background information on them both without taking too much time from the present timeline. I was able to connect more with both characters and feel a whole mess of sympathy for Charlie and the life he had. I am curious to see the “before” Charlie though so that just gives me more of a reason to read Katharine Ashe’s books.
I also think we need more heroes named Charlie. I mean, how many bookmaker/pirates do you know named Charlie? Also, how sexy is it that he worked with books? He’s a book nerd who also happens to be one heck of a dangerous pirate. RAWR if you ask me. Total RAWR. And Esme is just awesome. She works with perfume! She’s unconventional for sure because she’s also blunt, stubborn, and willing to do anything to help those she loves. I thought she was a lot of fun and she had an adventurer’s spirit which was very appealing to me.
Another great thing about The Pirate and I was the sense of urgency and adventure that was present from start to finish yet it didn’t feel like the story was incomplete. I was very happy with the pace, the plot, and the happy ending. I even liked how Esme would call Charlie by his full name whenever she was upset at him.
Click It or Skip It? Click It! I was totally charmed by this second chance romance. It’s one of the few novellas that I can say was much more than I expected. And memo to me: Add the previous books in the series to the Throwback Thursday Reviews wish list.

I would have liked a little more conflict and the romance to have been drawn out a little longer, but what can an author do? There are page/time constraints on novellas.
Esme and Charles are an unconventional couple. She has aspirations of becoming a world-renowned master perfumer and Charlie? Well, let's just say his life took a bad turn and he's now trying to get himself out of the situation he finds himself in--beholden to a pirate. He'll need Esme's help to do it.
Overall, I gave this one 4 out of 5 roses. I loved watching these two come together and fall in love. I adored Charlie and admired Esme. By the end, I got the feeling there wasn't much this duo couldn't achieve. I laughed, I grinned, and shook my head a great deal while reading. This is a great story to indulge in if you're looking for something sweet, funny, and quick to read. On the Lisarenee Romance Reading Scale, this one earned a STEAM rating--too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed. I very much enjoyed this one.
