Written by Stefan Petrucha and illustrated by Allen Gladfelter, Kakieland Katastrophe is the first in a new series of graphic novels that introduce new stories in the Hotel Transylvania world we already know and love.
With character profiles at the beginning, you are reminded of the monsters and human you already know or introduced to them if you're new to Hotel Transylvania land. If you haven't already seen the movies, please remedy that immediately as you are seriously missing out!
In this story, Stephen Cling, horror author and owner of Kakieland, a new Transylvanian theme park, is our baddie. Wanting to expand his empire, Cling decides he wants a hotel and he's found the perfect one ... Hotel Transylvania. After tricking our helpful, loveable monsters into posing for some selfies that make them look scary and distributing them via the Internet to ruin the image of monsters everywhere, an angry mob arrives and turn up the heat on our monsters with flaming torches, pitchforks and protest signs. My personal favourite which is an absolute classic says 'Sorry, I never know what to say on protest signs'.
After all of the adults do their bit to attempt to fix the problem and fail, it's up to the kids (Dennis and Winnie) to save the day, the Hotel and the reputation of monsters everywhere!
This is a really fun graphic novel. The characters stay true to the way they were depicted in the movies, the storyline is interesting and the artwork is excellent. There's great attention to detail in the illustrations and enough humour and character traits from the movies shining through so it's easy to hear the characters' voices in your head as you read. It can be difficult to translate characters from movies onto the page but this is an impressive introduction and I'm interested to see where the story takes us in the next volume.
Colourists Laurie E. Smith and Matt Herms and letterer Wilson Ramos Jr. also deserve kudos for jobs well done in making the overall look come together in a way that stays true to the feel of the movies yet also creatively stands apart.

I watched both the first two Hotel Transylvania movies and I'm looking forward for the third to be released on 2018. I'm happy that Sony Pictures Animation, with collaboration at Papercutz, has finally come up with the comic series of this movie franchise. Reading this 1st issue is like watching the characters from the said movie series. If you are a fan of Count Dracula and his family and friends, you must read and follow this comic series because you will definitely love it too.

The debut Hotel Transylvania graphic novel based on the movies! Horror author Stephen Cling visits Hotel Transylvania to try and prove monsters are still dangerous. Dracula, his daughter and her family, and the Drac pack are anything but! However, when a human child goes missing, it is up to Drac, Mavis, and the rest of the Hotel crew to locate the child before their monstrous reputation gets them chased out of town

When I saw this I was hoping it was going to be as funny as the movie, and sadly it's not, the story has long way to go before it can compare with the movie.With that said I would like to say thinks to NetGalley for giving me a chance at giving it a try.

I love the hotel Transylvania series and the comics was just as adorable!! Dennis and Winnie own my heart ,and the gang is back!!
The concept was simple like the first movie. Humans think monsters are you know.. monsters due to a falsehood spread by a competitor , and the adults are trying to fix it. Dennis and Winnie run off to the "kakieland" theme park to fix it and have a little fun themselves. How they get out of it and solve the problem is the comic.
Adorable and cute artwork! Definitely recommend for some fun escapism

I have not seen any of the Hotel Transylvania movies so my reading experience was probably not as intense as it could have been. The characters are hilarious but I'm lackning something and got bored just a couple of pages in. But the movies are no on my to-watch-list...

Hotel Transylvania is hilarious and fun comic to read. Its one of my favorite movies and glad it has a graphic novel series. Basically a guy wants the hotel for himself and will expose the monsters as scary. Can the gang fix the issue before its too late?

'Hotel Transylvania Graphic Novel Vol. 1: Kakieland Katastrophe' by Stefan Petrucha with art by James Silvani is the first graphic novel based on the film series of the same name. The reader is strongly advised to see the films before reading or things may not be very clear.
Business at the Hotel Transylvania is booming now that a new theme park has opened up next door. When horror novelist Stephen Cling visits and takes a series of selfies with the monsters, he uses the internet to make people afraid. When humans wielding pitchforks and torches show up, the gang knows they need to prove they aren't all that scary.
The gags are pretty funny and the characters feel pretty true to the movies. The story feels like standard kids comic book fare, which is fine if your kids are fans of the movies. I felt like the art was pretty mediocre, but it serves the story well enough.

My 2 daughters are HUGE fans of Hotel Transylvania. I’ve lost track of how many times we’ve watched the movies and tv show and they are very much looking forward to the 3rd movie coming out next year (2018).
When this came up I of course had to let them check it out. The character bios at the beginning are bright, colorful and a great way to refresh your memory or introduce you to the players if somehow you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know anything about the story.
The graphic novel follows the previously released visual storylines so my girls really got into it and had a fun time taking turns reading the pages, looking at the pictures and talking about the story.
The author did a good job capturing the likeness and personality of the characters from the movie and tv show. Unfortunately the only thing that didn’t quite translate is the lack of body movement and voices because how the characters move and sound were a huge part of what made them funny but you have to expect you’re going to lose that when you go from an animated tale to still life.
Thankfully the artwork mimics the originals so well that if you use a bit of imagination you can still feel that same sense of fun and campy humor as yet again the monsters have to prove they aren’t that monstrous.
When it comes to stuff like this I let my kids take over the reviewing and they give it 5 Bats!

This summer I watched Hotel Transylvania with my cousin for the first time. There was a short animation from it that played in the theatre before The Emoji Movie (which I also loved despite all the negative reviews) so I wanted to watch the full movie when we got home. I really liked it. When I saw that there was a graphic novel available on NetGalley, I had to have it!
This is a great graphic novel for kids. It had a lot of slapstick comedy which kids love. The characters stayed true to the movie, with similar humour, such as Drac getting words mixed up.

Theme park boss Stephen Cling is out to undo all the good work Dracs has done and make the public think monsters are scary again by putting some misleading pictures on the internet. Unfortunately Dracs just isn't so good at showing that not everything you read online is true.
This first volume of the Hotel Transylvania graphic novels is a great start to a new story line which looks like it may be aimed more at the kids but the adults will love it too.
Stefan Petrucha has done a great job of bringing modern day problems such as not believing everything you see on the internet as truth into this story and manages to have it read as if it was right out of the movie.
It is a little on the short side at 64 pages with the story managing to wrap up for no lead in to a next volume but it is still a great read with enjoyable moments.

Kakieland Katastroph is a rather short comic book with about 64 pages. the story contains the same quirky humor of the two very popular and successful movies. The art work, as expected, is a bit of a downgrade, but it is still neat and adds to the story.
In the story we meet the familiar characters from the movie as they are running a hotel in a monster-friendly (or not so monster friendly world). It takes place at some time after the second movie ended.
The story feels a bit rushed at times, which probably could have been avoided by adding a couple more pages, I would have liked the story to be longer. This is the first volume of a series and hopefully the story progression in the next chapter will be a bit more natural.
As a fan of both the movies I found this book very entertaining and I enjoyed reading it, and I look forward to the next installment.

If you enjoy the Hotel Transylvania-movies, you'll like this. If you don't, you might still like it. This graphic novel stays true to the movies, right down to the little quirks in the different characters, all while taking on serious subjects matters without turning them into something meant for laughs and without making it preachy. I loved the way the issues between monsters and humans were told and sorted out, but the ending did feel a little rushed and like it could use another page or three to get things resolved properly. All in all a good read, and mad kudos to everyone involved for not only capturing the characters well in illustrations, but also in writing.

This small graphic novel with all the loved characters from the movie, including Drac, Mavis and Johnny, continues to ring with the humor and love within the films. It takes us further into the Hotel Transylvania universe, letting us know what mischief and adventures the gang is up to.
The story itself, written by Stefan Petrucha, Kakieland Katastrophe still has that monster-rooting atmosphere and the illustrations by Allen Gladfelter carry that cartoon style that almost gives you a Scooby Doo-esque nostalgia.
All in all, Hotel Transylvania Kakieland Katastrophe is a sweet first installment with all the monsters and morals that won us over in the movies. Readers can definitely continue to feel part of the monster mashed family.

We've now read all three of the Hotel Transylvania graphic novels, Miss 7 enjoys them - shame there aren't more! This has the team trying to build human-monster relationships when a nearby amusement park owner deliberately trys to stir up strife (and angry mobs!) for the sake of his own profits.
Miss 7 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

Such a fun read! I absolutely love the movie so getting to meet the characters all over again in a brand new story was just wonderful. The illustrations are really colourful and I really like added humor. If you are a fan of the movie or even if you have not seen it, I recommend reading this. I hope there will be more in the series.

A big thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. I voluntarily reviewed this book. I know nothing about graphic novels. Are they for children? I liked the movie Hotel transylvania so I thought I would give this a go.. I found the art good and the story fun. I think if you like graphic novels and liked the movie you should try this.

I went in there totally blind, not having watched (or even heard of, really) any of the Hotel Transylvania movies and wow, was it a nice surprise.
The cutest art along with an adorable story, very creative and full of fun plus a nice little message about monsters being nice and how you shouldn't exclude people just for who they are. I really enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.

This book would be accessible and enjoyable for a wide audience, and works in much the same way as the film series. A recommended choice read for home or the classroom, as well as for school librarians. The book draws on the colorful humor and charm that is part of this brand.

Well...that was interesting.
It stayed true to the Hotel Transylvania vibe, but it was a bit too rushed for my liking. Needs more fleshing out if you ask me.

ARC Copy..it was a fun read but felt it lacks the zany-hyper fast pace of the original movies (along with the borderline satire) but still was a fun.

It's a fine comic. I'm not the biggest fan of the franchise to begin with, but it was free. I wouldn't read more, but this was fine.

As a Hotel Transylvania fan... this was ok. Honestly, from what I’ve seen of the series and read in this book, they don’t match up to the movies.

The adventures of Drac and the gang continue in Hotel Transylvania: Kakieland Katastrophe, a lighthearted children’s comic. When the owner of an amusement park next to Dracula’s hotel attempts to turn the public against monsters, Dracula and his friends find themselves besieged by an angry mob. The tone is a little more cartoonish than the films, but it still delivers some good laughs. And writer Stefan Petrucha does a pretty good job at staying true to the characters and carrying on some of the recurring jokes from the films. On the other hand the artwork by Allen Gladfelter is rather poor and is more on the level of a cheap comic strip. Hotel Transylvania: Kakieland Katastrophe is a little rough but still has a bit of the ghoulish charm of the films.
