She had always wanted an adventure in the stars…

After years of working for the Alien Immigration Office on Earth, Alyssa has finally been sent on her first assignment in space. But what’s supposed to be a nice little peace mission soon turns into a nightmare. One where pirates might abduct her at any moment and she's assigned a lethally scary - but oh, so sexy - bodyguard!

It doesn't help that the body he’s supposed to guard always heats up in his presence...

He was an abomination...
A beast...
Tortured and trained to kill since the day he was made...

Xarq has had it with bodyguarding jobs. In fact, he wasn't supposed to have them anymore. But one last job gets between him and his future military career, and he gets a tiny Earth female to protect. To top it all off, she is on her first mission in space, and his bodyguarding assignment turns more into a babysitting duty. Just perfect. But somehow, her oddly pleasant scent lures him in and he can't seem to get enough of her...

And that's dangerous. He needs to focus on his job!

Because that’s exactly when the pirates attack…

I think the insta-love was the deal breaker on this one for me personally. I felt little to no chemistry between the hero and heroine. She acted all intimidated and shy around him one minute, and the next thing you know they are having sex. They seemed to barely even have any conversations. It never felt realistic. A little depth to their relationship would have done wonders!

62% did not finish

I got this book on Amazon unlimited, I read the summary and I liked the cover so, Why not, right? Wrong!
Alyssa has been working with the Alien Immigration office for a while now doing what it seams to be secretarial job (I guess as myself her bosses knew she was not the sharpest tool in the shed). Now, for the first time, she is being offered a job as part of the team negotiating an immigration agreement with the new planet, meaning she is part of a real mission, with real alien. The book starts with Alyssa reading some report when she is visited by the Alien women in charge of the mission Lady Eneria (LE) and this is when my problems with this book started. informs Alyssa that there some unwanted attention around the new world they are going to, (I’m already thinking criminal activity), but our halfwit heroin does not understand what’s unwanted attention, the LE has to spelled out for her “Pirates!”; anyway, because of this reason she will be assign a bodyguard like everybody else just to be in the safe side, then she leaves leaving our hero to what over out heroine. I understand being amazed and intimidate with your new boss, especially if your new boss is the hots**t, but not being able to talk AT ALL during the whole exchange because you are frozen in fear and thinking stupid BS, really!!?
Going back to the book… as I was saying the hots**t lady leaves out hero with Alyssa; our hero, which was created in a lab by a despicable race of aliens for military purposes (not very original). Still, our heroine can’t put a decent sentence together because, she so overwhelmed and fearful!! Fast forward to the first team meeting and we have a human teammate asking our heroin out, he insults our hero during the exchange, and our heroin is thinking how her teammate is not a good person and that she doesn’t even want to go to lunch with him anymore. Next thing I’m reading? Our heroine accepting the lunch invitation WTF?? Now I’m thinking, halfwit, spineless and a coward, not a good combination. But alas, I’m only 30 % so the book might still come around.
40%, they have been abducted by the despicable race that created out hero, our halfwit heroine has no idea what’s going on and the hero has to explain everything on detail so she can grasp what is going on, and then… BANG!! They are crazy in lust and having monkey sex WTF??!!! They haven’t even exchange a hundred words!! What’s going on? 60% he’s telling her about his life and his past, (none of which is describe in the book), by this time, he cannot live without her bla bla bla
That’s as far as I got, I just could not take it anymore. I’m sure there is market for this type of book. It must be, considering the 4 and 5 stars reviews; with that been said, this book is not for me, I love sci-fi romance, especially alien romance, throw in a tortured/scared hero and I’m a goner. In this case, there is no chemistry between the H/h no developing romance, no nothing, I have to say I did like the hero, and the story line is good, but I can’t stand the heroine.

This book made me happy!
I was surprised in a good way... I wasn't expecting the emotions and lovely feels caused in such a short period of time.
description
Hero is so well portrayed. He's such a sweet and sour kind of guy! I loved his struggle, his feelings, his appearance and his fucked-up past. For a short book, he was a well-built character. Heroin takes a much more supportive role. Didn't like or dislike her... I just hated the whining and the constant crying. A little is okay... Too much drama is bothersome. Towards the end, Allysa grows on you and yes, surprises you. They say people change with love right? I guess that's what happened to her in a sense.
description
RESPECT!
Yup! She wins it despite the drama.
I truly recommend this short read! It has a little bit of everything and it's just what you need if you're looking for something quick and juicy. Satisfying? THIS HAS TO BE ON YOUR SHORT READS LIST!

It has mild character development, angst, action, love, hot-steamy sex, mystery, and hea ending.
Sonia Nova & Starr Huntress did a much better job here. I was engaged, moved and satisfied. Very well done!
Recommended!!!
I bid you farewell and may your next reads be fab!

A gloriously growly super soldier and a woman who has no idea the danger she's about to the thrust into. YES. For the record, I pretty much love growly alien men who know a good thing when they see (or scent it!) and end up going all Hulk-smash in an effort to keep their new honey-bunny safe.

Admittedly, Xarq didn't know Alyssa was his at first sight. Hey, some times it's not as cut and dried as other times. But once he did figure things out, he took care of business. Both with Alyssa (hubba-hubba) and with anyone trying to harm her.

On the downside, they had to be kidnapped by space pirates (with all the accompanying torture and mayhem that goes with that type of capture) before they acted on their bond. On the plus side, Xarq staked his claim in a BIG way.

A little danger, a few tense moments, and one genetically engineered beast of an alien who's not about to let his special someone get hurt. Yes!

Alyssa is excited because she is starting her first mission in space or on an alien planet. Before the first meeting on ship, she is surprised that the head alien in charge of this mission brings so hot muscular men to her room. The leader then explains that there have been lots of threats to their mission and Alyssa would be assigned her own body guard.Alyssa is nervous but accepts the Ezak-X male assigned to her.
Xarq isn't thrilled with his assignment guarding an inexperienced specialist. Ezaks are confrontational, militaristic and dominating of their mate., Alyssa stirs up some mysterious feelings. At first he thinks it night be annoyance with with a new scientist but as time goes by other emotions become apparent. He feels both protective and possessive to Alyssa. Then their ship gets invaded by the enemy, the people who created the Ezak-X. Will Xarq be able to keep Alyssa same and sound?
This is a good book with some surprising twists. I liked the world building going on. I voluntarily received a copy of this story and this is my honest review

Really enjoyed this. Loved the way Xarq was described and his more animalistic responses when it came to Alyssa. Their first time together, despite the circumstances...whooo! This was pretty fast paced, maybe a little too much for my liking as the book is on the shorter side, so there were moments that felt rushed. But overall, an enjoyable read with a happy ending.

dnf at 68% it wasn’t worth it

So the FMC is weak at best and I mean WEAK. Nothing about her was believable except it was her first real trip that I believed. But basically she acts as if being attracted to her bodyguard is sacrilegious and then they are kidnapped and for some reason thrown in together so whatever but then they wake up she cries they have sex. Yeah.

Another take it or leave it KU. If it had been any longer it would have been a DNF. It wasn't terrible, there just wasn't anything unique about it either. I think I've read this book 100 times.

Interesting quick read alien romance

This story was a quick read but it did not lack for anything. The world building was good & the romance was quick but you understood they were mates. They kidnapping was scary and the imprisonment was nerve raking. The characters were likeable and the story was interesting. Well worth reading.

So close...

Dang I just wrote a very nice critique and it was lost! I am hoping the author's next/more recent books don't have the same problems that I think this one has...I'll just say I finished the book and it was a good book. I will read more recent books by this author so the little things that bothered me weren't a deal breaker.
1. A more complete description of where the bodies are during the sex scene was needed. I didn't know if they were still laying (completely naked on a dirty cell floor) or he was holding her up while kneeling...
2. They didn't get their clothes back on but their nakedness wasn't addressed when the guards came in...
3. Too much internal musing by characters. Repetitive from both characters and didn't move the story along, they were like stop signs in the story. An attempt at character development, but I think the characters were well developed without the lengthy pondering. There was one in the middle of the escape scene that just stopped the action.
4. The shuttles were used for solo escapes, but they weren't escape pods they were shuttles..? And they had an active missile launch button while docked inside the main ship? the accidentally launched missiles caused a total destruction of the enemy ship, too. She didn't get help piloting the shuttle from other escaped guys- a missed opportunity for the author to add to her world. A medical scan/check didn't include a pregnancy test? A cross species baby from a genetically engineered father "came early" Lengthy musing about new species on earth not easily accepted and people being scared of her guy ends with a sales associate not really noticing...?
I am "nit-picking" I know, I know!
Even after all my complaining, I still think the author has the potential for great books in her and I look forward to more!

For adults only (18+ years) Contains subject matter that may be a trigger, or offensive, to some including: adult language, steamy intimate scenes, and violence (kidnapping, fighting, death, experimenting / torture, etc.). If any of these types of situations are a trigger or offensive to you, then this may not be the book or series for you.

This is the first book in a new series by Sonia Nova, which can make it have a little slower start while a new universe (setting, characters, species, etc.) is being developed. She has a very conversational writing style, with good flow, that made for an easy fantasy read. Her stories are usually well written, with minimal grammatical errors, and this story is no different.

This story contains lots of action after it gets going. The heroine, Alyssa Evans, is on her first deep space mission, and comes across as being very timid with a lack of self confidence. As the story progesses, she gains more of a spine and confidence, and is less like a "deer in the headlights".

The hero, Xarq, is an Ezak-X, and is considered an abomination by most species. They were created by the Krezlians as a hybrid from a variety of animal, alien, and human DNAs, to be killing machines in their goal of universe domination. After it was discovered by the Interstellar Alliance, the Ezak-X were freed. Most now chose to serve the Alliance in body guarding and military service.

Normally I would give a highlevel overview of how the story begins, but with the description provided by the author, I don't think one is necessary. Instead I provided a little background on how the two characters came to be on the Va'ii ship.

I hope you enjoy this fantasy read as much I did.

I really like sci-fi romance, but I'm so close to giving up on finding any more good ones. This KU pick sounded promising. It got off to a great start, but TBH, when I see the words "his cock twitched" before we are out of the first chapter, I know what's coming. (Pardon the pun). There are going to be pages and pages of sex with lots of words like sopping, dripping, throbbing, starving, pounding, exploding, screaming.. and well, you get it. And sure enough, there were. It's not romantic. It's not even erotica.. unfortunately I was listening, not reading ( loving the convenience of Alexa playing Kindle books) which only made it worse. As I chopped veggies for dinner my reactions bounced from laughing, to saying eww gross, to OMG he is going to rip her apart with what is apparently the largest cock in the known universe. It is larger than ANY human man's. But no need to go slow, or maybe not stuff the entire foot long sausage in there. Nope, just giv'er, pound her into the.... well I'm not sure what, as they were in a jail cell, but anyway, maybe she has no uterus or abdominal organs, so there's loads of room. Look, I like a nice bit of steam in the romance, but this stuff is so awful I can't even keep reading the book because it is just too stupid. DNF

Xarq the bodyguard

Xarq is part of the crew aboard the Va'ii spaceship. He's assigned as a bodyguard to a human female, something he's not thrilled about. He was hoping to join the military when they reached their destination. As an Ezak-X, he's done his share of safe guarding someone's welfare. But when he comes closer to the human, her fragrance awakens something inside him, he tries to ignore the sensations engulfing him but to no avail. The more time in her presence, the stronger the urges become.
Alyssa is excited to be one of the humans chosen from Earth to travel to another planet. But when the Va'ii ambassador confronts her about pirate sightings n assigns her a bodyguard, she's speechless. Xarq is an intense alien but she finds him sweet n caring despite the brutal history of the Ezak-X. But why does she have the urge to jump his bones? When he kissed her she no longer thought about anything or anyone, only embraced the moment wanting more of him. What that entailed she wasn't sure, no one ever invoked such strong emotions in her before.
I loved reading this story.

*i recieved a free copy of this book for an honest review*
I really enjoyed this one. the characters were very well developed and the world building or rather space building in this case was very well done. I really liked that there was just enough of a taste of the technology and not an overload. Alyssa may have been a space rookie but she had good personal morals and was well aware of how prejudice everyone was being to Xarq. having her take that into consideration and that building on her feelings for him made it much more believable when they started to get to know each other and fall in love. i also really enjoyed that Xarq was a bad ass, but he had his limitations. his body could only take so much and when it couldn't take anymore, he went down, hard. then it was Alyssa's turn to shine and she had to step up to the plate if they wanted to survive the encounter with Xarq's creators. It was kind of nice to see a couple working as a team instead of just relying on the male to fix everything. i definitely recommend this one! and i hope Ms Huntress writes more in this series.

No matter where or when, it seems that humans will ALWAYS judge a book by its cover. In this case, the "Beast" along with all his kind, is the species of contempt du jour. This Beast has a name; it's Xarq. He's an Ezak-X, a race of Frankenstein's monsters of alien genetic engineering designed as warrior slaves, but "liberated" by the government and allowed to serve as - you guessed it - soldiers or bodyguards. Still alien, still expendable, still feared and held in contempt. When new diplomat Alyssa is assigned a bodyguard - Zarq - he proves both skilled and loyal, despite her initial fears and the strange emotional tug that develops between them. Fans of alien SF romance will enjoy the sexy love story, and fans of justice and compassion will cheer at the end. It's a great story all around.

An alien is a being no matter the contents of the test tube

This was a wonderful, short read. It certainly made me think, in some ways, of Dr. Seuss's "Horton Hears A Who": '...a person's a person no matter how small.' There was that theme woven through out the entire story because Alyssa becomes aggravated by how others treat Xarq. I firmly agreed with Alyssa. No one should be looked down upon because they were created in a lab. It wasn't their fault. And it made it even better that Alyssa brought out something in Xarq that none of his other test tube brothers had going for them-yet. Too bad that Xarq didn't find some planet somewhere for the rest of the Ezak-X and his family to settle. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book, and I borrowed it through the Kindle Unlimited program too.

Heart of the Beast by Sonia Nova is a book about a special kind of love that comes when two very different species find common ground. This is the third book in the Mate of the Beast series but is a stand alone book with a HEA ending. I was immediately drawn into the story which revolves around two alien pirates of manufactured species, Xeegan a Ezak-X, and Zorq a Ezak-T and a human Alliance Agent named Kira. This book gives just enough information about the planet Riala and the species of aliens on it to build a solid world and make the characters both believable and appealing. I loved this story and think that anyone who enjoys an alien- human romance with excitement, crime solving, and saving the oppressed will love this book too. I loved reading this alien-human out of this world love story!

Alyssa and Xarq

On her first trip as part of an ambassadorial mission, Alyssa is assigned an Ezak-X warrior as a bodyguard.
Xarq is a genetically modified hybrid, the result of experimentation by another race, he’s not happy to forgo the R&R he was expecting before his new assignment.
When they’re attacked en route, Xarq must keep Alyssa safe, and maybe that means from himself too...

This is the first book in the series. It’s a very quick read, more novella length, but an enjoyable one with all the good stuff you can expect from a sci-fi romance. It begins an intriguing world, with an alien race with an horrific background. If I had one complaint, it would be that we never did find out what they were wanting! That being said, it was a fun read.

Recommended for those who enjoy sci-fi romance.

I am hoping this is book one of many!

I read this through KU and follow Starr Huntress, which led me to one of her new books. This story was slow to start but once it got going, I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the two main characters and the story got better as it went. The story is about an earth woman who is getting her first chance to travel into space, a dream she has had her entire life. There she is given a bodyguard that seems both dangerous and strange. Together they will fight together to survive and find a way to save each other.I am really hoping for more stories in the future about other Ezak-X. It has aliens, space adventure and a HEA ending with no cliff hangers.

Mate of the Beast

Alyssa was on her first mission to outer space when Xarq was assigned to her as a bodyguard. While at first, he was not happy about the assignment, he found himself strangely drawn to her. While attending the first meeting of her mission, the alarms went off in the ship. The ship was attacked by a group of aliens who wanted to recapture Xarq and all of his people for reasons that you must read the book to understand.
Needless to say, the experience of the two as they were kept in the cell were mixed. But when they were able to escape, Alyssa found herself in the position of having to start the escape pod. The result was very funny, although I doubt that she found it funny at the time. I recommend this book for you to read.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected. The main characters, Alyssa and Xarq, are clearly drawn and both grew during the story. Alyssa is a diplomat from Earth on her first off planet mission. Xarq is from an alien race who were enslaved and experimented on and only recently freed. He is assigned as Alyssa’s bodyguard. Despite their many differences they quickly feel drawn to one another and when things go wrong, their attraction grows stronger. Xarq’s people’s history and the prejudices against them add another layer to the storyline. I received an arc of this story and voluntarily left an honest review.

For a designer alien, Xarq wasn't that special. He couldn't overcome 3 unarmed captors with a tranquilizer. I was hoping for an animalistic beserker who left trail of blood or a cold blooded killer who snapped necks and crushed skulls but instead we have Xarq with a long name, some big muscles, a good sense of smell and an underserved reputation.

Alyssa's story was also unconvincing as I doubt any earth-alien-agency would let a complete n00b out into space in the ambiguous newly created "Immigration Team" to negotiate an immigration agreement after her last job "scanning papers and hardly ever seeing aliens". Righto. It's obvious the authors have never worked in a corporate capacity.

This is a very well written and enjoyable book. It is exciting, suspenseful, fun, and hot. She is a scientist who gets her first alien assignment. She receives herself a body guard. And the fun begins. I really don't want to describe the book as it is one you need to read and I don't want to spoil it for you. It kept my attention and I read it from start to finish without stopping. It is so good. One to relax with and enjoy. I highly recommend it. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.

An Entertaining Short Read

I would recommend reading this if you wanted some short action with some romance. It was exactly what I expected; however, I always look forward to books that are longer and have more plot to them. It would have been nice if this was that book. It had a great set up between the main characters and a great somewhat slow progression of their relationship. The internal dialogue was also enjoyable and the insta-connection was not in your face [;) compared to others].

Two of a different color

Even when knowing about aliens people still have preconceived notions. Alyssa knows all about the nonhuman beings from different planets. But, on her first outbound mission she meets Xarq a mixture of several different aliens made for a super soldier by, of course, lizards aliens. Being thrown together flips a Xarq to mate man while Alyssa just thinks he's very scary. Let in lizards pirates, exploding spaceships and bigotry everyone. Makes for an exciting story!!!

A perfectly enjoyable short read, but it lacks in originality and novelty if that's what you're after. It's pretty standard fare: mating instincts, instalove, a heroine who really should not have survived based on her skills and merit but manages to anyway, overbearing smug aliens who feel they know best for everyone else. I think had this been fleshed out more, it could have been a more interesting story. Nothing special, but not a bad way to pass 2 hours of time.

I loved this. First time reading of this author/s. The imagery is clear and the subjects show some growth in the amount of time we get to delve into their lives. The adventure factor is high and the male characters are setup to be slightly angsty and angry if not a little confused and bemused.

It does make for a good quick enjoyable read!

I shall include the disclaimer: This book is intended for mature audiences only.
