Previously published in Supernatural New York Times bestselling author Jacqueline Frank reveals a moonlit world of pulsing desire where those known as Nightwalkers inhabit the darkness—and love with humans is forbidden—until it can’t be denied . . . Kane knows Corrine was meant to be his . . . just as he knows that possessing the lovely human is outlawed. But on the night of the Samhain moon, the beast in every demon is stronger than reason, and Kane’s instinct is more powerful than any punishment. To claim her, he must cross the boundaries between them—body and mind . . .
Corrine doesn’t understand how Kane is able to read her thoughts, or if everything the stranger is telling her is the truth. But it takes no more than an illicit kiss to convince her of one thing: being in the presence of this powerful man is exactly where she needs to be . . .
3.5 stars. Gosh I sure do miss the original Nightwalker Jacob etc. books. None of the other off-shoot series were quite of that caliber. This was a nice, if mildly dissatisfying, visit to that world.
Kane met Corinne on Samhain, after stalking her, burning for her for three days, but before he could claim her, his brother stopped him...Then, before he could receive his punishment, Kane was summoned back to her side, horrified at the changes in her. She was dying and the only thing that could prevent it, was his nearness...While the beast, under the influence inside him, raged to claim the woman he knew was his mate.
The prologue runs parallel to the beginning of the first chapter of Jacob, but told from his youngest brother, Kane's, perspective...The rest of the story is set just after Jacob ends and involves Jacob's younger brother, Kane, and the woman meant to be his (who almost wasn't because of all the lost lore), Corinne, Isabella's older sister.
I liked the premise of these two strangers thrust together in order for one of them to survive, while also battling the raging lust neither can really ignore. Unfortunately, it was too short for the story to unfold organically (a normal novel would be preferable), or for the characters to overcome their rather flat and bland bonds. In the end, I had no idea what really made either Kane or Corinne tick, why he was in love with her (beside chemistry reasons), or where their story could really go (beside bed at least twice a year when they'll have no choice in the matter).
I'm reading out of order because I had this novella and didn't have the first book in the series. As it's a novella (it was in the four-story anthology "Supernatural"), it was not a very developed story and basically revolves around two scenes, one when Kane meets Corrine for the first time and another when they are in bed (with him bound so that he can't hurt her because he is in the throes of Samhain lust and has a Demon's strength). I liked Kane's determination to give Corrine what she wanted and his refusal to manipulate her into doing what *he* wanted. As a Mind Demon, he could easily control her mind and influence her responses, but he refused to. However Corrine accepted it all too easily, I felt, but since this is a novella I guess the author didn't have the time or space to draw things out. Also the epilogue leaves things hanging because Kane says he doesn't have the mental connection that Jacob (his older brother) has with his own mate Bella, and it's not explained why, nor is this resolved at the end of the story. In fact, when it ends, Corrine hasn't even fallen in love with Kane yet. That was a most unsatisfying ending.
I like Ms. Frank’s writing a lot and I have all of her original Nightwalkers books in Kindle, having replaced my paperbacks. This particular book was awfully close to a 2 star rating but I was generous because the book was well written, as long as the reader wants long sex scenes. I would have liked more of the plot development and characterization; I got bored with the drawn out sexual musings and sex scenes. As other reviewers have commented, it’s not the fact that there are sex scenes, it’s just that there is too much time and virtual paper devoted to the sex. Recommend this book for readers who prefer a book with a high ratio of sex scenes.
I’ve read this before but in a compilation anthology somewhere. It is pure PNR and unluckily suffers from explanations of what happened in the book before it. Since it is only 58 pages long, explanations just get in the way. This is Jacob’s brother and Bella’s sister, Corine, who were separated in the first book which almost causes Corine to die. Now she is waking up with the strange man that she met weeks ago in a strange bed. He is chained to the bed and she is learning why pretty quickly as her energy slowly comes back along with a strong desire for the man chained to the bed.
I liked their story, a little more moderate, considering that it is about a relatively inexperienced younger brother and Bella's sister who should be untouchable, but "nature" does its thing, one look was enough and the forces of nature determined what would happen. I glad that he got to her on time, but since this is a novella, everything is a bit unfinished, but I hope that they will be mentioned in the next books and that we are sure that they got their proper HEA.
This was the first book in the series for me, the space of time for Jacob meeting Belle, and Kane with Corrine was not clearly explained, but i think i will leave this as my starting point.. I am interested in reading Noah's book so i will check that one out.
Interesting explanations of the Demons and their differences. Alternate and still slight interaction to the "human" reality.
I'm not a fan of novellas because they are so short & you miss out on all the little details. But I'm glad I got to read Kane's story since I had a glimpse of what was happening between him and Corrine from the first book. Poor guy can't catch a break it seems. I'm glad him & Corrine got to be together, though, and that Corrine and Bella will get to stay together in this world.
I found this a very insightful book just wish it would have covered the whole series in someway. I would have loved to seem more of their mixed point of view to how Noahs mate was found
Well for my expectations this novella was too redacted...and most important.. unfulfilled story... Without any lines of what happens in future or any glimpse of evergrowing powers of Corrine..nope no idea at all... It had a very good potential for a nice story... But lil disappointed..
Please pat me on the back because if not for me being a sleepyhead, I would have pulled an all-nighter just so I could finish it in one sitting??? I devoured this one. I took my lunch while my Kindle was open. The prologue was good, the ending...not so much.
The creative world that this is set in is fascinating, the story on the other hand was alright. It could of been better if it was a little bit longer, and had more details. But I didn't like the way it ended, it was as a chapter should end not the story itself.
Oh I forgot how much I loved this series. I don’t know how I missed this book when I was reading the others, but I am so glad I found it now. Kane and Corrine brought me back to a world I missed. While it was short it added so much to the story I already knew.
