Blood Rain closes the chapter of Jane Archer's turning into a vampire as well as the old enemy of Skulick, the master vampire Marek, whom Mike Raven finally defeats when he decides to join forces with a demon, Cyon, to trap Marek and sends him to Hell. But it also opens a new chapter. Cyon is free. What will the demon do next?
It was another fast-paced story in the Shadow Detective series. Massa goes straight to the problem and solves it. I am still NOT anywhere convinced with Archer as Raven's love interest There's not enough background of that ON PAGE -- they went on a date, he bailed on her, and that was it? I actually cringe every time Raven refers to Archer as the woman he loves.
Since this series are all novellas, I'd prefer it if it only focuses on Raven and Skulick's battle against the dark creatures rather than having anything resemblance to romantic entanglement between Raven and Archer.

You know, I think I've figured out William Massa's writing shtick when it comes to the Shadow Detective stories. These books are his disposable books, the books he writes to generate his income. I say this because as far as creativity or investment, there is veeeeeeeery little going on here.
When I reviewed Soul Catcher, I said that the writing was tighter, cleaner and better than the previous book. With Blood Rain, its like Massa's accepted that this series is just there for the dollars. So many of the concepts and ideas in this book is old and worn out, having been used by better authors. For fuck's sake, a magical wooden stake in the book is called BLOODSLAYER. Come on Massa, you can do better than this.
In fact it's not just the creativity that's lacking in the series as a whole, it's the characters. So much of the characters' backstories is told through infodumps or lazy flashbacks that have little creativity or humanity put into them. They feel like the B-movie drek that Massa has had a hand in. If you come into this series off this book, there's no real reason why you would care about Raven and Archer's relationship because there really isn't one. Raven spends too much being a whiny bitch and Archer spends too much time being a stereotypical vampire. The morality is so childishly black and white, it sometimes feels like it was written for teenagers.
But at the end of the day, it's not horrible. It's digestible. It's boilerplate. It's engaging enough that I want to keep reading but I really feel bad for William Massa. I want him to write better than this. I want him to be better than this. But I suspect the dollar signs in his eyes are too compelling.
Blood Rain is the third book in this captivating series by William Massa. I got the first book and got hooked, and here I am, reading the entire series. Apparently the books start of with a small case at first, some sort of appetizer, to get you all warmed up. Poor Raven sure has a challenge on his hands in this one, and quite an unlikely alley. I really enjoyed the twists in this book that were very well thought through and in this case we have our super charged vampire and quite the unique end results! I definitely had a few "no ways" in this book.
The pace of this book was again on the faster side, keeping you glued to the pages. This is another page turner and difficult to put down. The books overall are not very long so you can easily read them in a sitting. I have to admit, they have a John Sinclair feeling to them, which I loved reading when I was growing up! No wonder I enjoy this series so much!
Another brilliant Shadow Detective, which follows on nicely from #2, where Raven turns his girlfriend to a vampire to save her life. In trying to locate her and figure out how to turn her back, a vampire plot is uncovered and a demon accidently released, and there's a couple of good twists and turns in the story make for some very enjoyable reading. Maybe 4.5, a fraction of a star off for the first person angle and the shortness of the story, as I also found with #1 and #2, it wouldn't hurt to make these a little longer and in depth.
This series is a lock for me. I had many reservations about Urban Fantasy, but Willaim Massa's books change my opinion drastically. Some of the smoothest writing I have read, great pacing, awesome thrills and action with fun and interesting characters. Atmospheric setting and horrific theme monsters (not those romanced vampire/werewolf spineless douchebag). Supernatural, occult action at it's best!
Book 3 continues the story of the main character and it's not bad it's just rather tropy and way over explains every situation almost as if he's trying to add word count. The book should really be in novella as it's short but it's an easy read that you can crank out in an hour and a half give or take and not much thinking. So I enjoy the story for what it is and follow it like a soap opera. Enjoy simple goodread.
After having read the other books in this series I was expected something more from the third one. The story is well told but it didn't seem to complete the story that had been set up in thee previous booked. All the same I will be reading the next ones to find out what happens next.
The 3rd book in the saga and loved this book! Couldn't wait to pick it up and read it with gusto! Everything hangs in the balance and our debonair demon hunter hangs it all on the line to win out over the bad vampire and even enters into an unholy alliance that could backfire at any moment. Bring on more like this book in my opinion. Brilliant!
This book is up to Massa's high standard of writing and storyline but it is an emotional ride. All the main characters are in danger in this one and after Massa killed off the fiancé in the early pages of Occult Assassin, I don't trust him to keep characters alive anymore.
I love this series! I like the idea of demon hunters and really like Raven. There is a lot of action and dealing with an old nemesis. If you read the first 2 then you need to read this one.
The third book in the series was better than I had expected, the twists in the story were unpredictable and exciting. I would never have thought it would turn out the way it did. Would 100% recommend! On to the fourth book I go...
Continuing straight after the events of book two and Archer has been brought back but at a cost, she is now a Vampire. As Raven struggles to deal, a new threat is coming to the Cursed City, that will test him to the limits. Again another good book in this series, that continues to improve.
An enjoyable if somewhat predictable read in this ongoing series. Anyone brought up on Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be very familiar with the storylines that fill books of this nature and this book does not break any new ground. Still, a fun read and I will, no doubt, read others in the series.
What do you do when the love of your life has become a literal monster because of your actions? That's the question Raven has to answer in this installment of shadow detective.
Read books 1 to 3. After the first I was in two minds whether or not to continue but the story gets better and better. Very enjoyable occult monster hunter books with likeable characters.
