Funny how life is, isn't it? Around 1983-1988, I was reading French "bandes dessinées", and "Les Schtroumpfs" were early favourites. Then, over time, I migrated to other titles, like "Tintin" and "Astérix", then "Les Tuniques Bleues" and "Lucky Luke". A conservative estimate is I must have devoured at least a couple hundreds of such books. And then... I'd outgrown all that.

Comic books, even as early as the mid-eighties, had started gradually replacing these French treasures, and then I forgot about them. As a teenager, I was like "Oh yeah, I used to read that when I was younger..." I'd outgrown them and considered them "kids' books". I bet you know exactly what I'm talking about. But as you grow up you don't, you know, really remember. It's sort of locked away somewhere in your brain, that magic that you used to love as a young child.

Fast forward to "now" (ie: 2013). I was in a bookstore looking for a book for my 8-year old son, and I came upon the Smurfs. I thought he might like to read about the Smurfs, as I had when I was his age. So I got him The Smurfs #1: The Purple Smurfs, an adaptation of the original Les Schtroumpfs noirs.

As Borat would say: "Great success!"

He absolutely loved it! The Smurfs are back, baby! As luck would have it, an omnibus collecting the first four "Schtroumpfs" books was published in August 2013, and I got him that too. But then, as we sat together and read these early Smurfs adventures, something happened and that little drawer in my brain, with the memories and whatnot of childhood, unlocked & opened itself, and I felt like I'd been missing out on something, and that I really must read these books again. This may seem corny to you, the jaded adult, but there's a part of you I'm sure that understands what I'm talking about.

Nostalgia factors aside - and this is where the op-ed ends and the review begins - this is a great book.

In the main feature, Gargamel wants to avenge himself of the Smurfs and so he devises the perfect way to go about it: he creates the Smurfette! The harmony and peaceful life the Smurfs were enjoying up to then gets disturbed when Smurfette arrives, and the results are hilarious. I probably enjoyed reading it more at 37 than I did when I was 8. Because when you're a kid, you're more focused on the pretty pictures and the general way the story is unfolding. But as an adult, I found that it was really well done, and that (wink-wink) there are things in there which will resonate with adults as well (if not more so). Those guys - Peyo and his collaborators - were smart! (This is especially true of "Astérix": the references and asides are funnier when you know the historical contexts and the stereotypes being alluded to - that usually happens after childhood).

The second, shorter feature was originally published around Christmas time and the feel-good vibe is unmistakable. The Smurfs' winter food stash goes up in smoke, the threat of famine sets in and so they are forced to leave their village. They find refuge in an old castle and there, the castle's Lord tells them all his servants & his friends have deserted him since he lost his fortune. The Smurfs end up finding a treasure hidden in a hole. To thank them, the Lord offers them to split the treasure with them, but instead they only ask for enough food to last the winter.

I do believe I've caught the Smurfs bug (again). I'll be re-reading these books - with my son or by myself - and I'm looking forward to re-discovering them.

This was hilarious! I think those who say Peyo is a misogynist just don't have a sense of humor. This is so satirical, how can anyone take it seriously?

Geschichte 1: Schlumpfine

Geschichte 2: Schlümpfe in Not

I have a 1976 hardback reprint in French from Dupuis. Originally published in book form in 1967 and serialised the year before in Spirou magazine, this episode is sadly very much of its time.

The titular short story is just a collage of every negative stereotype of women, and is just one long sexist joke. The Schtroumfette is a curse sent by the Schtroumpfs’ archenemy. And the curse is made all the more potent as the Grand Schtroumpf, through misplaced kindness, makes her stereotypically irresistible by way of a cosmetic procedure.

When I read this as a young boy, the sexism didn’t jump out at me, the mid-70s in France being very similar to the mid-60s and these sorts of things being ubiquitous, but as I didn’t get the “joke” this episode was simply tedious to me rather than funny. It was all about a really irritating character, and who wants to read that? I certainly didn’t and this was one cartoon that didn’t get read often.

Revisiting decades later as a jaded middle aged but partially woke bloke, I find the “joke” offensive. I do try to read between the lines, as some of the fun is poked at the males, whose fallibility in the face of beauty is just as ridiculous as their irritation at “female” traits. But there’s very little irony there. There’s some criticism of society’s demonisation of females and its worship of artificial beauty standards, but it’s too much to ask little kids to get that subtext. All they see is a reinforcement of sexism. So this is a bad episode.

The second short story in the collection is just boring. There’s no development in the story, no twists, nothing that could pass as social comment. Just bland pap.

Oh well. Even classics have their bad patches.

Two Smurf stories juxtaposed against one another in a single volume which, oddly, would both have benefited from having their respective page counts swapped. The titular tale is a tongue-in-cheek roasting of women and men for their stereotypical peculiarities (the "feminine nature" ingredients read aloud by Gargamel early on being delightfully perspicacious-- the easily manipulated, block-headed simpery of the males ringing true to life) which ultimately drags on for twenty pages longer than necessary, seemingly intent on letting the jokes decay through diminishing echoes rather than being confident enough to let the barbs stick once and move on. It's light-hearted, inoffensive and, sadly, inconsequential.

The paired narrative, The Hungry Smurfs, initiates a compelling dilemma and summary quest only to have the proceedings resolved far too quickly where an additional couple dozen pages could have extended the interpersonal tension and upped the survival stakes for our band of blue-skinned protagonists. The conclusion doesn't feel contrived or unwelcome-- it merely arrives too hastily. Could have been a more meaningful story if it had just taken its sweet time.

The art here is very predictable if you're familiar with the first three volumes: Simple with few stand-out panels, albeit the two stories in this volume do make some pleasant use of pink-washing and snow-blanketing, respectively.

1978 = 95pence

Story: *****
It's full book length story that made me very surprised with how thought out it was compared to the usual Smurfare. Gargamel creates her with plain looks and she's annoying so when the Smurfs get sick of her and she's in tears Papa Smurf performs plastic surgery to create the Smurfette who's seen on the cover. The Smurfs' behavior towards her in contrast is what I found most interesting. This tome is also eventful action-wise.

Art: ****
Peyo is great in general but best with the charming qualities of their village. The colors really stand out too.

There are two stories in this book - The Smurfette and the Hungry Smurfs. The Smurfette was of great fun, as it was about how a female smurf could easily ruin the whole village of smurfs who are male. The Hungry Smurfs is like an ordinary smurf adventure story, in which their food storage was burn in winter, and they have to take on an adventure to look for food.

Comunque 3 stelle e mezza meritate.

Niais.
