What if Kal El had been found by the Warriors instead of the Kents? The deadliest girl alive accidentally joins a super violent street gang. Are the Bleeders the family Jesse never had, or is Jesse the child they never wanted? What?
Free snacks at the gang tryout party! Also, SCANDAL-- - one of the Bleeders is a spy!

Jesse (The Deadliest Girl Alive) (and she east practically anything) shows up at the Bleeders Gang tryouts because she saw you could get free snacks, and ends up destroying the place. In gang scoring, this means she's in. This feels like a very short intro (50 pages) to the series, as mainly get to meet people and not much happens except a series of test so Jessie gets in. We partly meet them through gang cards (like baseball cards, which is a cute idea). One gang member is a Bengal Tiger names Whiskas. The gang seems to be of a sort of white punk variety. The art screams loud color and loud violence and humor. They all seem to wear vests. It adds book club discussion questions which are amusing: What would your event be in the Street Gang Olympics? Who would win in a fight, a motorcycle gang, a street gang, a mafia gang, or gangrene?
Jesse, the Deadliest Girl Alive, shows up to the Bleeders Gang tryouts when she heard she could get free snacks.
I picked this up solely because I liked the cover. I had no idea anything about this book or that it was the 5th in a series... I liked how we met each gang member through player cards with little fun facts about them! It's only about 50 or so pages and I wish it was longer, as I was really beginning to enjoy the story and then it suddenly just ends on a cliff hanger. I wish they would make a bind up of all the issues to make one big book.
I think what I liked most about this book was the cover. There are some great ideas here, and fun layout things like the collector's cards, and the art works well. But it was over in a flash, without all that much having happened. I felt I'd barely been introduced to the characters when it was all over. The book also felt a bit like it had been padded to make it longer, with several full-page spreads that didn't seem quite necessary, and extra pages with sketches (and those collector's cards). I will read the next one, but to consider buying it, I'd like to see more story brought together in a collection.
I quite like these little stories, but I wonder if we'll ever get something longer for Street Angel. I love the trading card gimmick in this one and the punk feeling art. It feels like a coffee table series (though that might just be the unusual size of the books). Here hoping the story's become slightly less episodic in the future!
Love the Cartoonist Kayfabe youtube channel so I wanted to give this a try... Well, it's charming and all, but a bit shallow. Basically, the equivalent of a single issue read at a much higher price point, though it does look pretty cool in the oversized hardcover format. I also didn't quite get if this is aimed at kids/ya or adults. Either way, it seems I am not part of the target audience.
A really loved the art style and the unique layout. The cover alone was enough to make me get this one. The humor was on point too. I only wish it was longer.
wonderful. barely anything happened and yet the aesthetics, humor, and random extra bits were so excellent that I took so much away from this read. loved the discussion questions. loved that one background dude in the gimp helmet who crawled around. loooooved amari and need her to curb stomp me and tell me she loves me.
It seems that all these Street Angel comics are less than 50 pages and I actually like it a lot. I'm not so sure how the order of these comics go, but once again the beginning is a mess. Rugg's style? Who knows. Jesse joins a violent street gang named Bleeders and the point is to bleed, but for what...god only knows. They have tryouts and Jesse is in it for the free pizza only to destroy the whole place. The plot is simple and in a way the comic is quite coherent, although it follows the same routine as the Kung Fu Special. We don't really get anything out of Jesse, which is a bummer. Perhaps I should read the first part, but then again if it follows the same pattern I may not get anything out of that either. Perhaps I'm wanting too much and the point isn't to make Jesse into a real character, but instead she is like a paper-doll reflected on others. Or I'm trying to find meaning in something that's just bonkers for the love of being so.
The colors world is red and pink hued and slightly scratchy. It feels like the comic was made on acid and there's this Enter The Void -type of weirdness in it. Somehow it works well and the comic looks great and awesome. Still, for a style like this less than 50 pages works better than fine, since looking at this gets you exhausted. Small and violent adventures are best served with less pages, since less is more in this case. I don't know if I'd want to keep reading story lines like this for too long though, and I do hope there's no pattern.
Just read this last night and loved it! I had read the original mini comic when it was first released, but the color and larger format really accentuate the art and story. The story is fairly straightforward, but with the Street Angel habit of turning common comic book tropes on their head. The story premise involves Jesse Sanchez (Street Angel) seeing some gang recruitment posters and attending the meeting basically because the sign says there will be snacks. Of course, the gang members see her diminutive size and large appetite and get much more than they bargained for as they run her through their gang member tryout and initiation process. I really feel Rugg and Maruca have created a classic comic book character and are just continually placing her in new and interesting situations. Once again, the format also shines above just about everything else currently being published in the American comic book market. The book is oversized and the thick cover stock makes it feel substantial in your hands. Rugg has added lots of extras (baseball type card art with stats for many of the gang members, lots of process and more). It really is a great package, great art, and a really fun story.
I do like the Street Angel comics and I hope this review doesn't make you not give those a chance.
This is a beautiful and large hardcover copy. And the story contained within is humorous and has the art style of the Street Angel comics.
But I cannot give it a ringing endorsement because the story is SO short. This book is like 50 pages and has a $19.99 price tag. I'd rather pick up the 200 page paperback graphic novels than pay premium for a hardcover. Just my personal opinion.
If you are a collector of this series this will make a lovely edition to your collection. It is a lovely book. But I just wouldn't pay that much for it given how much content it has.
If you aren't familiar with the Street Angel this is not the book to start with.
Sem najdu tale strip, k mam idejo risat svojo zgodbo o punci k skejta in mal gledam kako so se drugi loteval skejtanja v stripu.
I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads Giveaways.
A fun, but brief tale of a new pledge, with the powers of Superwoman, attempting to join a gang. Street Angel is a voracious eater of pizza seeking to join the Bleeders. Does she succeed?
While very violent, it tends to be more cartoony than graphic. There also is not much in the way of world details, it is very focused on one neighborhood area and the Bleeders headquarters. A very quick read. Maybe not worth purchasing on your own, but would be a great library edition.
What it lacks in story, it more than makes up for in art. The gigantic size of the book is appreciated - I mulled over several panels, taking in details and color combos. The storyline was hollow and forgettable, but the artwork is a solid 5/5.
Fun to look at and hilarious. Stupid laugh out loud hilarity. Not much substance so it makes for a really quick read. Enjoyable artwork and a truly offbeat story.
This was crazy short, but also fucking fantastic. The story was nice but the art style is where my love really comes from. Unlike many other graphic novels where everything feels polished and produced and perfect, this had that chaotic, messy, drew-this-in-my-room kind of vibe and I love that. It makes me want to make my own graphic novel, and art that inspires more art, will always be my favourite kind of art.
They also call the main girl a trash can because she's basically a black hole for food and like... same.
The art and story are fun - this was the first of the series Ive read, so there were definitely plot points I missed that I assume would have been covered by earlier issues. Oh well!
I was not aware that this was volume 5 until I put in Goodreads that I finished it. So I was confused. Now Chezzie is a character I wondered about with his Rocky Horror/Mad Max outfit.
The Street Angel Gang is the kind of book that makes me happy without being heartfelt which I find quite refreshing. It's fun and interesting but I also felt like there was no point, it sort of felt like someone was really bored and this is the result.
