When Naomi Nagata first arrived on board the Cant she was struggling to live with her past and find a home in a ship as run down as her. That all started to change when she hired Amos Burton.
This is like the best think to read after finishing the season finale and realizing that you're about to face an entire year without The Expanse (thankfully there's Persepolis Rising coming in December). This is the second installment in a series of four prequel comic books following the past of the Roci's crew. This one follows Naomi and how she first met Amos. As a fan of both these characters, this issue filled my heart with warmth. I also feel that the pacing improved, as well as the writing. Much better than the first one with Holden, and the next one is Alex!! Can’t wait. Hopefully they won’t make us wait another 2 months for the next one.
What a great background story - Naomi and Amos's friendship is one of the best things in The Expanse and it warmed my heart to see how they first met and establish that special bond.
Well this was a big improvement from the first issue in this series! Were the Holden story (#1) fell flat this one really delivered.
It really isn't just Naomi story, it's Amos as well. We get to se how they both ended up on the Cant, their first meeting and the start of their strong friendship, as well as hints of both their backgrounds. Although we still don't know what Naomi did or Amos for that matter, that would have be super cool. It was nice to see both of them again and learn more of where they came from. Naomi and Amos are definitely among my favorits in the Expanse universe.
Unfortunately the art is still a bit too flat and uninspiring for my taste, but a bit better than #1, which is a shame it would otherwise be a strong 5 star story.
But all and all, this is a must for all Expanse fans.
The story was interesting in that it filled in some of the back-story of the main Expanse plot line, describing how Amos and Naomi met and forged their relationship. The graphic novel format was poorly executed in eBook--the type was too small to read comfortably. The story was all plot, overriding everything else, like character development. Most of the information was simply stated rather than coming out through character actions or dialog. We also were left to guess the details of Naomi's big secret.
Chapter 2 not only gives a look inside Naomi's mind but Amos as well
This was the 2nd origins story i read. The 1st was Amos which i really disliked and gave 1 star. This one was much better. Using the story of an incident on the cant it shows Naomi's inner demons very well. It also shows how Naomi and Amos grew close and helped one another get passed their pasts(sorry for the poor wording im not an author). Imo this chapter not only does a great job with Naomi but is a better origin story for Amos then the one dedicated to him
I love that there's so much background in this collection. Seeing where Alex choices came about with his family, leading to the Roci. Seeing how Holden's moral made for a thorny path in the military. Seeing Amos's past even more than his novella, and FINALLY, my dreams were answered with getting to see how Naomi and Amos first met/worked into the relationship they are in now.
This is as much Amos as it is Naomi. So maybe half points for that, since it's expanding on both of them, but I'd have preferred it wind back a bit more and end at the introduction of Amos.
Very interesting backstory of Naomi meeting Amos, including much of their unspoken thoughts. Gave insight into them both. Liked learning more about Naomi's son & background, though we actually learn very little.
What I really appreciate about Naomi is that she's a realist, for the most part. She has a skewed idea of what makes someone evil though, and her relationship with Amos highlights the best parts of them both.
3.5 stars So, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to read this in order but this is book 2… I’ll find out later whenever I can get book 1 from the library. This was super short and was just ok. I don’t have much else to say about it.
Bit meatier than Holden's, hence the extra star. It's interesting that they're going closer to the character appearance of the actors in the tv show, rather than the description in the books.
Ok. Gave a little on the origin of her relationship with Amos, but very thin. Really disappointed that the characters are drawn as appear on show—they’re not how I imagine them, except for Alex.
I loved seeing the moment that Amos and Naomi meet for the first time. This short graphic novel helps explain their relationship and explains why Amos trusts Naomi so much.
Naomi Nagata is a solid prequel to the Book and TV series. It covers Naomi's beginnings on the Canterbury and how she met Amos.
The graphic novella does better than its' predecessor, The Expanse Origins: James Holden. It tells a balanced story that does not lose the realism that is the hallmark of the book series. It also wonderfully underscores the broken-ness of these 2 characters, and while it doesn't explain why Amos is willing to let Naomi be his conscience, it does explain why she is willing to do it.
The only place I felt it feel down, was its portrayal of Amos. The first altercation is out of character even for the explanation in the story. There seems no justification for the attack, not even with Amos' lack of empathy.
That said, still something I think any Expanse fan should read.
