The Masterkey is the prequel to The Masterpiecers and it happens about a year before that book started. I’m always a little hesitant to read a prequel when the other books in the series are already released, but I’m so happy that I’ve read this novella. I got to read how Aster and Josh became a couple. The writing is fantastic. Some things happened and there were some revelations that I think are important for The Masterplan. I can’t wait for The Masterplan to be released! I’m loving this series.

Aster and Josh are great characters. I loved Josh in the next books and I loved him now. He’s so sweet, reliable, caring, genuine, smart and loving. He’s studying to become a police agent and he can’t wait to be one. Josh is very close to the Redd sisters and he’s always there for them. He realizes that he wants more than being friends with Aster. It’s unexpected, but he loves her just like she is.

Aster loves her twin sister and she’s very close to her. Their home situation isn’t the best, but they have each other. Aster is convinced that something is going on with their mum, but nobody believes her at first. She’s determined to prove everyone wrong. I was constantly wondering who is telling the truth and what could happen next. Aster is happy to have Josh as a friend and spends a lot of time with him. She’s over the moon that he has feelings for her, because she wants him.

I was unfamiliar with the author and really only came into possession of the novel via The Murder and Mayhem Boxed Set. The Masterkey is a really good title and Olivia Wildenstein chose wisely to set high expectations about what I was about to read. The problem is that this book is included in a compilation of 20 novels thematically connected by murder mysteries and/or thriller mayhem and this had neither.

I always try to be kind unless I feel the author is disrespecting me as a reader. Although, the book doesn't IMHO thematically fit with the concept of the boxed set, I sense that Wildenstein did not join the compilation under false pretenses. In fact, she wants to call her book a romantic thriller. I don't have a problem with that. I just have a problem with the fact that the experience of reading this romantic thriller was not something I enjoyed. The book was merely a "Meh!"

I would give a trigger warning regarding domestic violence and abuse. Aster is convinced that her mother is in possession of a handgun. So she tries to tell her twin, Ivy and her BF Josh, but neither believe her until the gun is fired one night. The gun is confiscated and it is realized that the gun is registered to Aster. This is not the ending; nor a spoiler. It's an OK story.

I had so much trouble finding a suitable category for my Masterful series so I’m inventing one: Romantic suspense for teens. Says it all. Enjoy...

Interesting read. It's a mystery, a romance, a young adult, a story about mental illnesses. Aster's live isn't easy, with a sick mother who only loves her sister. Luckily she has Ivy and Joshua, who love her dearly. But they lie to her and don't always believe her either. Complex story, but very good!
I received a copy and chose to review it.

I was a little confused at first as to where the story was going, but I liked the journey overall. I had fun reading about Aster, Ivy, and Josh. I'm looking forward to reading the next book and seeing what happens next! Full review to come~

description

❝ Pensive, I pick up my fork and dig into the gloppy red mess that feels like my life. This mess, though, I can make disappear. The turmoil inside me, that won't go away until Mom does.

Or until I do.❞

First, thank you so much to Olivia Wildenstein for this ARC! I really enjoyed starting this new series <3

Because I'd started out reading her fantasy/paranormal series, The Lost Clan, I wasn't really sure what to expect of a more contemporary series. I'm glad I decided to request the ARC because the story was well-written and it had me glued to my nook just waiting to read where it was going.

That being said, I was a little confused at first. I wasn't exactly sure what the plot of the story was. It was focused on building the family relationships at the beginning--mainly the dysfunctional and abusive relationship between Aster and her mother. However, it did become more clear later on after a particularly shocking incident with Aster, Ivy, and their mother.

❝ The key she wears around her neck swings against her shapeless white blouse. It's the key to all her secrets. Sometimes, I think it's the key to her heart, but then I remember she doesn't have one.❞

I sometimes had a hard time liking Ivy because of how oblivious she could be. Her mother was really her blind spot because she seemed unable (or unwilling) to recognize how dangerous her mother could be to Aster. She was very placating, always trying to defuse the situation but never doing much to prevent it from happening later on. At the same time, however, I felt a little sympathetic because of the way she was constantly caught between her sister and mother.

Besides the family relationships, I also enjoyed seeing the way that things developed between Aster and Josh. He was always protective of both sisters, but I think more so of Aster. It was partly because of how Aster's mother would pick on her so much, but also because Aster was dealing with her own mental and emotional problems.

Overall, I think this was a great start to the series. It really set the history and relationships up well, and I'm looking forward to continuing and seeing where it goes.

The Masterkey was just released on October 16th, so go check it out!

A great prologue to the Masterful series! Ivy is given a place of choice in the following books in the series, but I've always had a soft spot for Aster. Which would explain why I was so thrilled to see this book is dedicated to her and her story with Josh :) Full of suspense, unreliable characters and family secrets, it was impossible to put down. And the ending! What a twist! Loved it!

Totally amazing by an author that only writes fantastic stories. Aster is convinced that her Mom has a gun. Unfortunately no one believes her, until one night. Just kept me reading to find out what happens. Received an ARC and would have reviewed anyway.

Prequel novella to YA suspense series, told in dual POV. No real clue what to expect next but it's hooked my interest.

Update after finishing the series:
Thinking of it as YA suspense, it's good, just the pacing slowed down in the third book. I had an idea of where it might be going, but kept me on the edge of my seat through the end of book two. My main critique is it's noted as romantic suspense, which I just didn't get. At all.
Adding below what could be considered spoilers on the love interest and main character.

There is no build up to the connection, no longing that we as the reader see. We don't even see the feelings returned. At the end the guy just declares he wants to be with her. While having his POV in the third book, we can see his interest and protectiveness grow, but it also feels like it comes out of nowhere. Ivy never shows more than a passing interest, though understandably she's focused on the competition. It just felt slapped on the end without any feeling of connection or emotion between them.

Ivy and Aster are 17-year-old twin sisters who live with their mother.
Both the mother and Aster suffer from mental illness.
The mother constantly mistreats Aster while she praises Ivy.
Aster copes with all this as she can, thanks to the support of her sister and Josh, her faithful friend and her crush for years.
A gun incident prompts Aster to temporarily move in with Josh, and the two take their relationship one step further.
I have many questions in my head? What will happen to the mother of the twins? And the green jeep? I also have doubts about Ivy, I don't know why but she doesn't give me a good feeling.

I loved this!! It's a short prequel to the Masterful series and is a must read for fans of Olivia Wildenstein. There's everything I've come to expect from Wildenstein: fantastic writing, complex and loveable characters, steamy romance, all that AND a mystery that is expertly woven into the narrative. If you ever wondered where the Redd sisters came from, here's your chance to find out. And if you've only just now discovered the Masterful series, start with this one and work your way through. It's addictive, so consider yourself warned ;)

Strange things have happened, but strange is the definition of Aster´s life.
Living in a broken household, Aster struggles with her life. Where her twin sister Ivy shines and attracts the positive attention, Aster is labelled ad the "weird" twin, suffering from mood sways and depression. Even her mother often overlooks and abuses her. But everyone keeps secret, and when Aster discovers her mom has a gun in her possession, she becomes suspicious. With the help of her long-term friend, Josh, Aster is determined to uncover the truth about the gun.
Suspenseful story wreaking emotional havoc and causing the reader to stop and think about life priorities. It is not always granted that your family will be supportive, kind, and helpful. Sometimes, your closest ones are the ones who are breaking you, making you weak, making you suffer. Aster is a great example of what might become of a person that is constantly abused and mentally tortured by someone whom you crave love from. Such behavior is splitting the family, and with Ivy caught in the middle, thereal turmoil is yet to come. Even Josh´s life is turned upside down thanks to his connection to the twins and their mother. However, each time you think you have a clear opinion formed and understand everything, a new fact comes to the surface that twists your view and makes you wonder.
Great and quick read, and I would love to read the next book in the series.

I liked this book. But it needs a trigger warning for abuse etc..

Interesting twist. Based in mental illness/eating disorders/twins. It was totally unpredictable and that makes it just so much better

I really liked this book. I think this is my first suspense book but it really had everything I enjoy in a book. Great plot, interesting characters, romance and good writing.

You can read this book in no time and enjoy it greatly. I was hooked from the first chapter and always wondering who was the one saying the truth. The twins and her mother have a very complicated relationship but it’s one of the twins that has serious issues and it’s very entertaining to read from her POV how she sees the things happening around her.

There’s a good mystery and dangerous situations that become insufferable in a short amount of time. I’m so glad there’s a second and a third book because although this book doesn’t end in a cliffhanger it definitely leaves you asking for more.

The Masterkey, a prequel in the Masterful series, is a quick read, and the perfect place to start to get to know Aster and Ivy Redd and Josh, all main protagonists in either The Masterminds or The Masterpiecers, Books 1 and 2, respectively, in the Masterful series. Even secondary characters, like the twins' mom and Josh's parents, are three-dimensional, and I enjoyed getting to know them.

I enjoyed witnessing Aster and Josh's budding romantic relationship, and it warmed my heart when he stands up for Aster. Though Josh has been there for both Aster and Ivy since childhood, he vows to Aster that no one is going to hurt her anymore, and that he will always protect her.

The Masterkey is filled with suspense and family secrets. The twists in the story will keep you on the edge of your seat and wondering who you can trust. Wildenstein's fantastic writing and complex characters makes this a must-read!

Read this collection if:
• You enjoy romantic thrillers.
• You're a fan of Olivia Wildenstein and/or the Masterful series.
• You appreciate well written stories.

Well this is my first read by this author and man I have to say it was well played. A wonderful blend of suspense and intrigue to keep you turning the pages, wondering whose reality is the truth. There is so much hinted at and twisted misdirection it keeps you wanting more. Whose truth is the truth and who is covering something. It's all well done and this quick read leaves you yearning for more.

It took me a little bit to get into it, but once I did, it was an alright book, as the first that I have read of this series, it was decent, though kind of tragic overall of her story. I think it was a well thought out story line though. should be given a chance to read.

This was a very interesting/different read for me. It is kind of a suspenseful romantic story that dives into the lives of a broken family with a history of mental illnesses.

Personally I thought the story was very good. I’ll start with, I’m a sucker for the boy who steps in and is the protector of the girl and this book gave me that with a HEA. Next the broken family dynamic was crazy and written so well. I was so frustrated with the relationship between the 3 women that I sometimes felt I needed a break. And finally the touch on mental illness, I get it had to be part of the story and it made sense, but I felt some things weren’t fully developed? If that makes sense. Like sometimes someone just mentions Aster being diagnosed with schizophrenia, but all she says she’s being treated for is depression (which makes sense). So I don’t know if it was supposed to be part of the story like her sister told Josh she had it and he believed her and it’s supposed to have you thinking “oh no one believes Aster everyone just takes her sisters word” or if she really had it. Anyways I think neither confirming nor denying she had that particular disease just threw me a bit, but obviously there is a history of depression and that part was well written.

Overall I think this was a fantastic story and I can’t wait to read the next one. This was a super quick read especially since you will want to keep going to find out what happens!

I read this book as part of the USA Today Bestselling boxed set, Murder and Mayhem. It was the first book that I had ever read from this author and certainly not the last, as I bought the next two books immediately afterward.
This novella had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. At times, I wanted to slap both Ivy and Josh, but they're the two people who love Aster the most in the world.
Cruelty runs high and Aster's story is one of true heartbreak. I refuse to give spoilers, but I highly recommend this book, along with the entire series. If you like books that can make you feel every emotion that the characters within feel, this is definitely the one for you. It's a testament to an author's writing ability and beautiful mind.
(I left my review for The Masterminds first. So, I'm out of order. :)

I enjoyed this suspenseful story that has a twist of romance to it. This is my first book by this author and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. This is a well written story that has strong characters that not only kept the story engaging but also brought it to life on each page. They are relateable and turly made the story for me. I enjoyed their growth as well as the growth of the plot throughout the story. The author's writing style is such that it pulls you into the story from the start. This is a story that has twists and turns that leave you turning pages fast. This is a hard to put down book that is full of action and romance. A story about family and the secrets they keep. This is an entertaining story that I highly recommend.

The Masterkey is a short story that follows Aster and Ivy as they deal with their mother's and Aster's mental illness, parental favouritism, school and the trials of being a young adult. The writing is interesting and gives a balanced approach to the story jumping between Aster and Josh, a long term friend and shoulder to cry on, so you don't get bogged down in Aster's justifiably pessimistic view of the world. This also sets the scene well for the rest of the series and leaves it open enough that you want to know more without leaving you on too much of a cliffhanger.

This was a 3.5 for me. Ivy and Aster are twins. One is sitting in jail for murder and the other is competing on a reality tv show. The story line had a lot of potential. Aster's mental illness could have had more of a story line. I feel her schizophrenia is was mentioned as an after thought. Josh's role could have been played out more. Honestly, I felt like I started in the middle of the book. Interesting characters and an original story line.

This book took me by surprise and would not let me put it down till I finished the last page. It moves along at a great pace which made for an easy read. The characters are amazing and you will find yourself falling in love with them no matter what happens. The story will grab you and keep you reading till the end. This book is a must read, no doubt about it.

I'm not really sure what's going on with this story. Who is telling the truth or their version of the truth? Everything is connected but not at the same time. What happens next? This was a well written suspense twist with a small romance. Is Aster really schizophrenic or is that another layer to unravel?

This is an entertaining, quick read full of action, romance, and family drama. The story is told from different perspectives, which I think always adds a lot to the reading experience. It was hard to know which characters to trust in this story, and that made it much more intriguing to me. I can’t wait to read the rest of the story!

An Engrossing Tale

This book was wonderful, albeit way too short.
The character and world building was fantastic. I just couldn't put this down. It's not quite a mystery, yet filled with suspense, and twists and turns. I highly recommend The Masterkey. You won't be disappointed.
