The idea of The Secret Zoo came to me when I was just nine years old. I wondered what it would be like if zoo exhibits had secret passages that allowed kids to get in and animals to get out. Over twenty years, this idea matured in complexity and length until it had become an epic story, to be told in ten full-length novels. When I'm not exploring the worlds in my head, I spend time speaking to likeminded peers at elementary schools across the nation. This book was the conclusion to The Secret Zoo series. It is well written for pre-teens and will capture their attention as the rest of the series did. I felt a little disappointed as I expected a little more excitement than it involved, but it was still an enjoyable finish to the series. It was sad to see the 4 children who had become so involved with the Secret Zoo have to say their final goodbyes and return to a normal life without their new friends and animal friends.

Overall, a great series and one that either girls or boys would enjoy with the adventure and suspense.

Ugh!! We loved this whole series so much - until the end! I understand the idea of it ending like a child’s fairy tail - but a child’s fairy tale doesn’t take 10s of hours to read and be invested in. This whole book was about magic so was expecting an ending that left a little room for magic. I’d love to scream from the roof tops about this series (and did until this book). I just wish the closet had been left open!! Needed a tiny touch more magic!

The best book of the whole series-from a mom and her nine year old daughter.
We miss our friends already after following them through 6 books on an incredible journey.

My first thoughts when reading this book dealt with confusion. Because while I had finished the fifth book and started and read this one all in one day, the author took much longer (4 or more years) to write it. Within a few pages, there was a big glaring inconsistency between the two books and while it was fairly inconsequential, it was pretty noticeable. At the end of book five, they rescued Blizzard (and the rhino) from the other zoo...while there was snow on the ground and snowing. Also, the school playground was trashed and not fixed. Yet, 8 days later, Noah is walking through autumn leaves in an undamaged playground. A re-read before starting this book would have stopped this from happening and made my overall impression of it much higher.

I did enjoy the book overall. The majority of questions about Mr. Darby were answered. Only one really hanging question about the the kids with the chameleons was left but it really felt more like he was setting it up to make another series with them as the main characters.

The ending itself was good though it had its sad moments. There were some pretty graphic/gruesome descriptions of DeGraff at the end, just as a head's up.

Plus, I'm still confused about why Chick put the bully into this series. He just took up space and the final confrontation had Noah hitting him...because becoming your bully's bully is the right way kids should learn how to deal with one. I'm also confused why Chick had the 4 scouts steal something and made it a big deal and then never mentioned it ever again.

Overall, there were some good parts to the series, but the author never really was able to best the first book which really was a good read. He came close a few times but overall, I wouldn't say I recommend this series.

‘“DeGraff’s coming for your world . . . “Do you want to hide or fight?”’

‘What would it be like to fight back against Charlie Red and DeGraff’s growing army? What would it be like to win?’

THE SECRET ZOO: THE FINAL FIGHT – Book Six – by Bryan Chick

My Heart! I Love The Story And The Characters – Recommend!

Book Six is my first adventure into THE SECRET ZOO Series, a magical place beneath the Clarksville Zoo, and I look forward to my journey into Book One.
‘The Shadowist has taken control of the Secret Zoo, and it’s up to Noah and his friends—both human and animal—to stop him.’
‘If the rumors were true—the stories being passed around by excited voices in the halls and cafeteria—and tarantulas were really being spotted on the property, then the place to begin looking for them was the cellar, the room where DeGraff, the Shadowist, had once built a portal.’

Reading Age: 7 – 10

Thank you, NetGalley and Greenwillow Books (HarperCollins Publishers), for providing me with an eBook of THE SECRET ZOO: THE FINAL FIGHT at the request of an honest review.

What an amazing book

My daughter, 12, was interested in these books because of the cover. If she decides to read something by a new author, I normally read it too. I love this entire series. The pictures in my imagination are all very real and tells of an amazing story. I really enjoyed the way each character is developed... and the lessons learned. Never give up....you can save the world by being who you are and developing your talents. Friendship is very important and relying on each other and their talents and helping everyone grow together for the good of all...

I'm honestly quite disappointed with this book. The last one was so good! There was so much build-up and hype! The threat in this one just doesn't seem like he's as hard to beat or intimidating as he was in previous books. I also felt like a lot of the characters were ruined for me in this book. I really did not like the ending.

Good bye my friends...

Wow! What a series! My daughter and I laughed and cried! Such wonderful characters! The Secret Zoo...a place of wonder...a place of mystery and gifted animals...a place of beauty. The lessons of conservation and kindness to all living things is expertly crafted into a story for all ages to enjoy!

My 9 year old grandson and I read this series together over FaceTime to stay connected during Covid lockdowns. It is very well written, engaging and imaginative. We both enjoyed the series very much and would recommend it to any reader who enjoys fantasy stories and loves animals. We were both a little sorry to reach the end of these wonderful books.

Ceci & Penny were recommended this series from our librarian and it quickly became their "favorite book series." It's pretty good! A bit scary, especially at the end, if you have more sensitive kiddos. There was a mild inference of someone having a "crush" on someone else (I can't believe my kids are old enough for this stuff haha but the book is geared for 9-12 so it's appropriate).

My kids really enjoyed this series

Read all six books in the series with an 8y old and two 6y olds. They really enjoyed the adventure and suspense. One of my 6y olds says, "I pinky swear that you will love this series."

A great book to read with your kids.

We liked how podgy learned to fly. We also liked the chameleons and how they worked together with the people to make them invisible. I would recommend this book to my friends that read with their dad at night. Great series, enjoyed very book.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was a good ending to this series although a bit bittersweet. Even with the odds against them; the kids don’t give up.

The ending sucks and almost ruins the whole series. Definitely could have been better. My kids were super disappointed.
