Are you a fan of Bleach/Noragami and you just need more of that shounen awesomeness? Look no further!
One day a German girl of Dominican origin went to sit down to write a Japanese manga about a spirit world based in Switzerland. And it was awesome!
What I really, really loved about this manga is that the mangaka poured her heart and soul into this indie work, with the little help of her friends.
And boy is she a good illustrator!
The Plot
Kamo was a terminally ill teenage until he begged for life on his deathbed. A spirit named Crimson comes to his rescue, but not without strings attached. Kamo's life comes with a price, however. Crimson can only give Kamo life by using someone else's, or by killing other spirits. Their lives are closely intertwined.
This is the Bleach-type manga I've always wanted!
So you see, we have the same goal. To live.
Crimsom makes sure that no one will get into the way of his living - even if it means death for them. Despite this, Crimson can be very childish and easily irritated by Kamo's youthfulness and newly-discovered vitality. I love their dynamic. I love that Kamo finally gets to live a life of exercise, unhealthy eating etc. now that his heart disease is gone.
Kamo runs into Marie, Benno and Shokola, who are all part of a Latino community in Switzerland who are about to lose their home to a bypass. However, Kamo and Crimson have to defeat a lightning spirit who threatens the city they live in.
The characters
Crimson I love Crimson. He's a wildcard of a character, but so much fun. He's neither bad nor good, selfish nor selfless - I can't wait to see how he's explored in later volumes.
KamoKamo is your typical shounen main character, but unlike most he's had a very difficult past dealing with a heart disease, and so he enjoys having newly-found powers more than your average shounen teen does.
EnnoEnno is a father figure to Kamo, and a really funny and endearing guy. Wish there was more of him in this comic.
Shokola Other than Crimson, Shokola is the coolest character in the manga. She's a sassy, curvy girl of Dominican origin who has some connection to the spirit world. She knows exactly how to handle Kamo and his self-deprecation.
I love that the author/illustrator ends the manga by showcasing character design and personalities of the illustrator/writers. It's very quaint and very heartwarming. It's absolutely awesome

Absolutely fantastic in plot, illustrations, and characterisation. It was a delight to read and it created intrigue without overstuffing the plot. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next, and I suspect wherever it goes it will be very, very good.

'Kamo Vol. 1: Pact with the Spirit World' by Ban Zarbo is a manga dealing with the supernatural and a clever young man.
Young Kamo is born with a failing heart. When we meet him, he is in the hospital about to die as his parents watch over him. He is visited by a spirit being named Crimson who offers to extend his life in exchange for a favor. Kamo has to leave his parents behind and help Crimson find 12 sould for him to consume to extend Crimson's life. Along the way, they run into another being named Thunder who likes feeding off electricity. Kamo must protect his new friends and may have to team up with Crimson to defeat Thunder.
It's a cool story, but I sympathized more with Crimson than with Kano. It was hard to feel much about him. Maybe that happens more in later volumes. The art is good, and the book ends with a nice thank you from the artist and the assistant to the artist.

This was an interesting first volume although nothing really outstanding. Kamo doesn't really feel fleshed out to me yet but Shokola seems fun and I'm definitely excited to see more of her. It's a fairly straightforward 'deal with the spirit world' kind of plotline, but it's still fun and the art is good. I think the character designs are probably my favorite part of this and I definitely liked the new one in the last chapter. I am kind of confused on why a manga from Switzerland is still written in the right-to-left style, but I guess they were trying to be more 'authentic'?

Update: Because I feel like everyone should be aware the three volumes printed does not end with a wrapped up ending. It's still a decent story and the art/characters are enjoyable however I was bummed to discover the series doesn't wrap up in the third and last volume printed back in 2019 as I originally thought it would. Since it's 2025 I think it's rather safe to say this series probably won't ever get finished unfortunately. So if you want to read this series, which does have cool ideas, be aware you'll be left without answers.

Sadly the scan my library has isn't the best quality and it's very obvious that the manga has been digitally altered to fit the english words in the speech bubbles, as there is quite a bit of pixels/JPEG going on in their version around and in the bubbles.

Also für mich ist das ein absoluter Highlight-Manga. Erst einmal liebe ich den Zeichenstil. Ich finde nicht nur die Menschen gut gezeichnetsondern auch die Geister. Sowohl die Actionszenen als auch die Gestik und Mimik haben mich voll überzeugt. Einfach klasse.
Die Story war interessant, spannend und hat mich richtig in den Bann gezogen. Das lag sicher auch an dem Hauptcharakter, den ich sehr sympathisch fand. Auch die ganze Idee mit dem Pakt eines herzkranken Jungen mit einem Geist fand ich originell und sehr gut umgesetzt. Ich kann den Manga absolut empfehlen und freue mich, dass ich auch schon Band 2 hier habe.

Lange ist es her, seitdem ich das letzte Mal einen wirklichen guten Shonen Manga gelesen hab. Endlich scheint der Bann gebrochen zu sein. Mangaka Ban Zarbo hatte mich quasi von der ersten Seite.
Der Zeichenstil ist klasse, besonders das Charakterdesign gefällt mir sehr gut. Der Plot hat mich sofort angesprochen und ich bin froh dass er abliefert.
Ich denke jeder, der die Reihe liest, wird ein paar Parallelen und Ähnlichkeiten zu anderen bekannten Serien wie Bleach, Shaman King oder sogar Death Note. Macht aber nichts. Wie auch in der Welt der Romane oder TV Serien, gibt es auch im Manga-Bereich kaum etwas, das noch nie dagewesene sind. Ähnlichkeiten stören mich nicht, so lange die Umsetzung stimmt und das tut sie hier.
Wenn ich einen kleinen Kritikpunk habe, dann das der Anfang etwas zu sehr „auf Speed“ ist. Alles passiert Knall auf Fall und der Leser hat kaum Zeit sich erst einmal auf Charaktere und Situation einzustellen. Es wirkte fast so als hätte die Mangaka es etwas eilig das Nötigste aus dem Weg zu räumen, um dann mit der eigentlich Handlung und dem Team von Kamo, Crimson und Shokola zu beginnen.
Aber wie gesagt, eine Kleinigkeit. Da ich nicht weiß wie viele Bände in Planung sind, macht der Blitzstart vielleicht ja auch einen Sinn.
Plot ist interessant, Charaktere noch mehr. Her mit dem zweiten Band.
Übrigens, gibt es Anime von deutschen Mangas? Weil, das hier kann ich mir wirklich gut vorstellen. Ruft Flow and und fragt ob sie den Opening Song performen wollen

I love the characters in this book! It's refreshing to have another ethnicity in a manga, and I love the banter between characters. Crimson, the spirit Kamo makes a pact with, is very fun and I love his design. The idea of hunting down spirits is great, and I enjoy that the main character is physically altered so the "I must succeed!" trope actually works. If I had a drop of water for every time a manga character said "I have to do my best!" or "I have to be better!", I could drown myself. But it works here because he actually HAS to do better or he'll literally die!
I will definitely be continuing this series. I've never read Death Note because I'm a little baby when it comes to gore and violence, but I had read reviews that this series was similar to that, what with a spirit/Yokai making a deal with a human and it not really working out too great. I'm glad I took my chance to read this book, and I can't wait to continue reading!

Visto che oggi era una bella giornata, quintalate di zanzare a parte, ho preso questo volumetto (e l'Autan) e sono andata a leggere in giardino.

Diciamo che potrebbe essere il miglior manga Made in Germany letto da molto, molto tempo a questa parte.
È il solito patto che un ragazzo in punta di morte stringe con un demone. Ma... I personaggi son ben caratterizzati e la storia dietro il patto ha senso. Senza contare Shokola. Molto bello il gesto che fa alla fine del volume. Prima non sapevo cosa pensare di lei, ma dopo... Tanti brownie points per lei.
Molto belli i disegni anche.
Le cose sono due. O aspetta che Mangasenpai pubblichi anche gli altri due volumi (e arriviamo all'anno prossimo) o mi faccio un regalo e recupero i due volumi che mi mancano, perché il primo ce l'avevo in tedesco ma non l'avevo mai letto, e concludo la serie per conto mio.

This manga made be realize, everything that said "Tokyopop" on it, was terrible. Everything I hadn't read or skipped, ALL said Tokyopop.

The flute. It's original, but it comes off like an advertisment or non sequiter.
I was willing to overlook the Ichigo Hollow thing too. I finally got caught up on Jujutsu Kaisen, they did the heart thing WAY better.
The wild spirit names appearing on the wrist- that was dope, I loved it. But the way they did it, made it look ridiculous.
And there's a nagging sense of whatever language the original work was in, wasn't English, but there's some weird pacing. Like when Crimson is trying to do prose... it's bad. Also, I hate the name Crimson. The author was going for a German/Swiss? thing. Why not use one of those names? Crimson felt reaally clunky. Yikes. Crimson in German is purpurrot. What about... Vorbote des Leidens, or Leiden for short.

Kamo: Pact with the Spirit World is a genius story that has everything you could ask for in a manga: adventure, secrets, strange friendships and a massive dose of good humor. It was an absolutely great read, and left me looking forward to the next chapter of Kamo's unique story.

I went into this one knowing nothing about it as I was gifted the all 3 volumes for christmas. But I was pleasantly surprised & actually quite liked it.
In this first volume we follow Kamo who was born with a failing heart. We’re first introduced to him while he is dying in hospital & he is visited by a spirit named Crimson who offers him extended life in return for a favour.
My only nitpick with it is that the pacing did drag a little in certain parts but other than that this was a pretty solid start & I’m interested to see where the story takes our characters next.
I really enjoyed the art style in this one, it’s nicely detailed & really brings the story to life.
Overall this was a fun first volume & I’m looking forward to continuing the series

Tengo que empezar con una pregunta seria: ¿cómo es que esta belleza no ha sido adaptada al anime? Una serie, película, algo, pero necesita más atención, con toda seriedad. Los personajes, el mundo, el desarrollo, los diálogos, y el arte, santo cielo, el arte es precioso. Pero iré por partes.

I like the premise for this manga a lot, but unfortunately, it just didn't deliver for me. It tells the story of Kamo, a young teenager with a congenital heart defect. When he is conscripted by the spirit, Crimson to battle other spirits, all manner of things ensue. Firstly, I think the artwork is great here - very authentic in the manga style. The plotting however, leaves a lot to be desired. Character motivation is questionable and the dialogue is very clunky. All in all, the basic ideas are there, but the execution just lets it down.

Kamo, a sixteen-year-old boy, is dying from a defective heart. Crimson from the underworld offers him a deal. Trap twelve spirit souls that will allow Crimson to live again and Crimson will repair Kamo's heart permanently.
Despite a non-Japanese author, the artwork has an authentic manga feel. The ambience is very international. The setting is Bern, Switzerland. The female lead is a Spanish immigrant who occasionally uses Spanish phrases. The plot, based on Goethe's Faust, is just different enough to be enjoyable without throwing off the manga vibe. 4 stars!

This is a great opening volume! It introduces the characters, the plot and even accomplishes the first of twelve tasks. So, starting off with such a well-grounded first volume I got involved with the plot right away. It reminds me a bit of "Death Note" in that a human boy is accompanied by a grotesque looking spirit. Kamo is on his death bed when the spirit, Crimson, makes a deal with him. Kamo will help Crimson defeat twelve other spirits in exchange for his health to be mended. This had just the right amount of everything making it a fun and interesting beginning to a series. I enjoyed it.

Ab der ersten Seite ist man sofort in der Story drin und die Action beginnt. Der Zeichenstil und die Story haben mir unglaublich gut gefallen. Besonders die Action und Kampfszenen finde ich gut ausgearbeitet. Manchmal empfand ich zwar die Dialoge als sehr gekünstelt aber das war ein Glück nicht zu häufig.
Mit der Fusion am Ende hatte ich weniger gerechnet und finde das für den kommenden Verlauf der Geschichte echt interessant.
Ich bin gespannt wie es mit Kamo und Crimson in Band 2 weiter geht.

Ich war erstaunt als ich erfuhr, dass dieser Manga gar nicht aus Japan stammt - dabei kann er von den Zeichnungen her locker mit den japanischen Pendanten mithalten.

Ok, jetzt habe ich alle Bände und ich kann sie alle lesen!
Wie ich schon auf Italienisch geschrieben habe, ist das ein sehr gutes deutsches Manga. Die Geschichte ist interessant (auch wegen der dominikanischen Einflüsse) und ich mag die Hauptfiguren. Am Anfang wusste ich nicht, was ich von Schokola denken sollte, aber sie ist ein nettes Mädchen: ich liebte, was sie am Ende des Bandes für Kamo gemacht hat!

Schon irgendwie komisch, dass eine Geschichte in der Schweiz einen Protagonisten mit einem japanischen Eigennamen, Anglo Familiennamen, ein japanischer Arzt und ein Geist mit einem englischen Namen hat. Später hat sogar einer einen friesischen Namen.
Und auch wenn es nicht unrealistisch ist, dass Kamo Sport macht und Dinge isst, die er vorher nicht konnte, aber mit irgendwelchen Jungs Basketball zu spielen wenn er gerade aus dem Krankenhaus geflohen ist, ist schon ziemlich merkwürdig. Und wer waren die Typen überhaupt? Freunde? Fremde, denen er seinen Namen genannt hat?
Ich hätte es auch vorgezogen, wenn die Geisterflöte immer eine Flöte geblieben wäre anstelle zu einem Schwert oder sonstiges zu werden, das wäre einfach kreativer und einzigartiger gewesen.
Und ich kann auch verstehen warum Enno “Eric” nach Hause nimmt, weil er ihm “das Leben gerettet hat” aber warum tischt Kamo ihm die Waisenhaus-Geschichte auf? Um schneller aufgenommen zu werden?
Und wenn das nicht gereicht hätte, so haben wir eine Latina namens “Shokola” (was ist das für ein Name?), welche den Geist Crimson sehen kann und sogar andere spirituelle Kräfte hat.... warum überrascht mich das nicht? Und wenn ich es auch mag wie sie einen Bann auf das Haus legte indem sie ein blaues Kreuz auf die Tür malte, was diesen Manga etwas von den anderen abhebt aber musste es so viel von den Stereotypen aus der amerikanischen Popkultur benutzen? Sie spricht sogar kurze spanische Worte, und nur einige davon machen auch Sinn (auch wenn sie korrekt sein könnten). Ab diesem Zeitpunkt ging es mit dem Comic schnell bergab.
Die Autorin schafft es durchaus, besser zu schreiben und den Leser etwas an der Nase herumzuführen aber andererseits schreibt sie die Charaktere mitunter auch unglaublich dämlich, wie z.B. Crimson der Kamo erst fast zu spät sagt, dass es ein Zeitlimit gibt bis wann sie die Geister fangen müssen.
Die Stimmung im Comic wechselt auch ständig und die Geschichte geht von Witzen zu Massenmord in wenigen Sekunden. Der Comic ist nicht schlecht geschrieben, vielleicht etwas durchschnittlich aber es ist einfach nicht mein Ding. Die Autorin ist aber eine gute Zeichnerin, sie was definitiv was sie tut. Die Verschmelzung von Geist und Mensch resultiert auch in einem guten Aussehen, nicht neu aber dennoch gut, ich wünschte wirklich die Zeichnerin wäre eine bessere Autorin.

It's kind of strange that a story in Switzerland has a protagonist with a Japanese first name, Anglo family name, a Japanese doctor and a ghost with an English name. Later even one has a Frisian name.
And even though it is not unrealistic that Kamo does sports and eats things that he could not do before, but playing basketball with some boys when he has just fled the hospital, is it really strange. And who were the guys anyway? Friends? Strangers to whom he gave his name?
I would also have preferred if the ghost flute had always been a flute instead of becoming a sword or something else, that would have been just more creative and unique.
And I can also understand why Enno takes "Eric" home because he "saved his life" but why does Kamo tell him the story of the orphanage? To be picked up faster?
And if that wasn't enough, we have a Latina named “Shokola” (what is that name?) who can see the Crimson ghost and even has other spiritual powers .... why isn't that surprising? And even though I like how she put a spell on the house by painting a blue cross on the door, which makes this manga a little different from the others, but did it have to use so much of the stereotypes from American pop culture? She even speaks short Spanish words, and only a few of them make sense (even if they could be correct). From that point on, the comic went downhill quickly.
The author does manage to write better and lead the reader around a bit, but on the other hand she sometimes writes the characters incredibly stupid, such as when Crimson tells Kamo almost too late that there is a time limit until when they have to catch the ghosts.
The mood in the comic also changes constantly and the story goes from jokes to mass murder in a few seconds. The comic is not badly written, maybe a little average, but it's just not my thing. But the author is a good drawer, she definitely knows what she does. The fusion of spirit and human also results in a good appearance, not new but still good, I really wish the artist would be a better author.

This first volume of the new manga "Kamo: Pact with the Spirit World" has a very strong start and was an entertaining read. Kamo is born with a failing heart and is now slowly dying in a hospital. At least until he meets Crimson, who makes a pact with him to help him live longer, as long as Kamo does a favor for him of course. The art style is very beautiful and is definitely met my expectations on what I like to see for a manga. As this is the first volume of a new series, there is much to be desired, especially story wise. I would have enjoyed it more if I was able to feel a bit more invested in the characters. I felt indifferent at times as I read this, but I hope this will be addressed in future volumes. Overall, I enjoyed this first volume.

Dieser Manga war so toll, wie ich erwartet bzw. gehofft hatte...Umso gespannter bin ich, wie die Geschichte weitergeführt wird. Hoffentlich kommt der zweite Band noch in diesem Jahr :)
