Redemptor is another fantastic addition to the Valducan series, becoming the fourth book to be published in the sequence, though I think any of the novels can be enjoyed as a standalone. That said, while each of the first three books have featured a different protagonist, this one breaks the pattern by swinging the focus back to Matt Hollis, the demon hunter whom we first met in Dämoren. Prospective readers who wish to get the full picture may want to tackle that one first, since Redemptor contains quite a few characters and references from book one.

Our story begins approximately three years after the events of Dämoren, which saw the defeat of Tiamat’s Cult at Matt Hollis’s hands. Matt is now married to Luiza, a fellow Valducan Knight, and they even have a daughter. But still, the war on demonkind continues, as does the hunt for more sacred weapons to add to the Valducan arsenal. These sentient weapons are the only things capable of destroying a demon, and the knights who wield them are also bonded to them for life, their minds, bodies, and souls becoming one with the angelic spirit within.

Understandably, everyone is concerned when grave news emerges from South America that someone has been trying to steal holy weapons from museums across the continent. An evil buried long ago has suddenly awakened, leaving a trial of death and destruction in its wake. Now even the paladins of the Catholic Church have stepped in to join the fight, offering to put aside their differences with the Valducans in order to help stop their common foe.

So far, each book in the series has expanded upon the world-building and mythology of holy weapons, and Redemptor was no exception. We also get to find out more about the inner workings of the Valducan. In the years since Dämoren, Matt has become an important member of the order, hunting demons with a team instead of being the lone wolf he once was. A bigger cast of characters opens up the book to multiple perspectives, giving the reader a fuller and more detailed picture of the relationships between the various knights, as well as the roles they play. I especially enjoyed the sections featuring Mei and her training sessions with her master, highlighting the importance of trust and friendship among the ranks. No matter who they are or where they come from, the members of the Valducan are like one big family.

But unlike the earlier books like Dämoren or Hounacier, which mainly followed a single hunter, we don’t get to know any one character as intimately in Redemptor. It’s also a very fast-paced and action-oriented novel, so there’s not as many opportunities for in depth characterization—another reason why it might be best to start this series from the beginning if you are a newcomer, so that you can get the foundation for Matt’s character from the first book. Existing fans, however, will most likely find this one to be the most exciting and action-packed installment yet. Matt and his friends are up against the most powerful and dangerous enemy they’ve ever faced, and once this plot gets going, it doesn’t stop.

This book also introduced Felisa, a formidable female paladin of the Vatican, and she was probably my favorite character. Religion tends to be a contentious subject in sci-fi and fantasy, and often, I find that the Church or religious figures in many of these stories are set up to be scapegoats or strawmen, which to me is just lazy writing, and then there are the blatant stereotypes of the zealot. In contrast, it was a breath of fresh air to meet someone like Felisa, who is a strong, positive force—merciless when dealing with demons, but who also has boundless compassion and support to give to people like Luiza’s mother, whose faith is a beautiful and integral part of her life. I hope this won’t be the last we see of Felisa, especially since I’m very interested to see how the partnership between her people and the Valducan will play out, now that the Catholic Church is an ally.

I’m sure I sound like a broken record by now, but simply put, this is a fantastic series and perfect for readers who enjoy their urban fantasy with some darkness and grit. Redemptor was another action-packed sequel featuring compelling characters and topnotch world-building. I can’t wait to read more Valducan.

Audiobook Comments: Certain narrators who make books a better listen than a read, and R.C. Bray is definitely one of them. I’ve been an admirer of his work ever since I listened to him read The Martian, and I love that he is also the voice of the Valducan series. He’s the kind of narrator who can adapt to anything he’s reading, and once again he was excellent with Redemptor, capturing the atmosphere and mood of the story, delivering a pitch-perfect performance.

Seth Skorkowsky brings goods to the table. I'm addicted to his Valducan series, and my secret wish is for it to continue for years to come. It's this good, guys. Also, I simply need more stories in this world, the one focusing on Luc in the first place.

Redemptor is the fourth instalment of the series. While it can be read as a standalone, I don't recommend approaching it as one - you'll lose way too many nuances that make it an excellent read for those who already know the mythos and the knights.

In short, the series follows an order of modern-day knights that hunt demons. Only a Holy Weapon can kill a demon. Each knight is bonded to a unique weapon. It's a bond more intimate and strong than any human relationship you can imagine. It's an absolute pure love. Not surprising, as each weapon is inhabited by an angel who chooses his protector and bonds with him/her.

In Redemptor new characters and new weapons appear, each with unique abilities (shifting gravity, making an invisible shield, premonition). It's cool. Faced with an unspeakable evil threatening orphaned and bonded weapons, the Order may be forced to join forces with the Catholic church. There's no trust between them, but there's a chance to make a powerful ally from a former enemy. The church is represented by two Paladins - Kofi and Felisa - each bonded to a holy weapon.

Kofi is an impressively effective, but cold professional who keeps his emotions at a check and doesn't yearn for acknowledgement. Felisa is more relatable and sensitive. She questions her life in Vatican and experiences more than few internal struggles that never feel forced or cheap. Also, she brings some comic relief with her internal ramblings (that will make series' followers smile):

"What did she want? Luiza's approval? What was that really worth? Luiza, bride of an angel, was married to the American who was also wed to Damoren. Was the union to an angel not enough? Polygamists. That's what they were"

Other new characters who get their POV (in third person) chapters are the youngest Valducan knight, spouse to Lecrasus - Mei and Sir Uwe. Mei is young and reckless, but likeable. Sir Uwe is quite hilarious - a strange little man who despite his oddities (like speaking of himself in the third person) is extremely bright. Also, his weapon is cool.

Contrary to Hounacier and Ibenus (more character-centred novels), Redemptor is a fast-paced and action-oriented novel with plenty of demons-killing scenes. The breakneck pacing made me turn the pages with growing excitement. A brilliant page-turner.

Overall, though, I have to admit that I didn't like it as much as Hounacier and Ibenus - two most intimate books in the series that focus on different knights and show how layered human beings they are. Both Malcolm and Allan appear in Redemptor, but they get little exposition.

What else? Be prepared to see one of the most fascinating Valducan (at least to me) characters die. It was heart-wrenching, but he went as a true hero would. Rest in peace.

Redemptor is an enormously satisfying read, with engaging writing and a pace that will keep the pages turning quickly. It introduces new characters I'd love to learn more about. I cannot fail to mention that there's a new weapon mentioned - Polish war pick Nadziak. As a Polish, I'd love to see it in action soon.

REDEMPTOR by Seth Skorkowsky is the latest of the Valducan series. I'm very fond of this urban fantasy series and its premise: that there is an organization of monster hunters armed with magical weapons that allow them to kill the hundreds of demons afflicting the Earth. Each book has a different protagonist but often has guest stars of the original cast. This book, Redemptor, is unique in that it is named after a villain's weapon rather than one of the heroes' weapons.

The premise of this book is Matt Hollis, the protagonist of the first book, is forced to team up with a group of Vatican-backed monster hunters. The relationship is tense because the Valducan order is a group of excommunicates from the Catholic faith for a long-ago offense. The Catholic Church and Valducan have a bigger enemy than each other, though.

A hunter of demons from centuries ago has become corrupted by his misuse of black magic and, worse, has corrupted a holy weapon to create a monstrous evil from the sword Redemptor. He's killed dozens of hunters and destroyed many holy weapons. Can our heroes stop him? If they do, what will they do with the fallen sword?

I really liked this book and enjoyed the dramatic irony Seth Skorkowsky made of the holy weapons. We, the audience, know the holy weapons are greater demons rather than angels. However, the Catholic Church is entertainingly wrong about them. However, there's just a hint that angels are real enough that the conflict muddies the waters considerably. Matt doesn't have any interest in theology, though, so he mostly just keeps a laser focus on killing the villain.

This is a straight forward adventure story in the style of Indiana Jones with Mayan ruins, evil immortal conquistadors, and lots of supernatural relics. I believe it's one of the best stories in the series but it's also definitely a lot more black and white than most of the Valducan stories. For a series that tends to focus on the moral ambiguity of its heroes even as they face genuine monsters, this is mostly a straightforward monster hunt. That doesn't hurt its score in the slightest, though, and I loved its Pulpy modern age goodness.

Just like the first 3 books in the series, Redemptor was fast paced urban fantasy fun that entertained from start to finish.

As has become the pattern, the focus shifts again from the previous book. Instead of Europe, this time we’re in South America. Holy weapons are going missing again, sparking fears of another nightmare scenario where the Valducans themselves are targeted as they were 3 years ago by the followers of the demon goddess Tiamat. This is something different though, a new threat that will bring the Valducans into contact with one of their ancient rivals: the Vatican.

In Redemptor, we get to see a lot of familiar characters, with Matt, Luiza, Luc, and several of the other hunters coming back for another adventure. We also get several new characters in the shape of Master Schmidt’s new apprentice and a pair of Catholica paladins (I just piqued your interest, didn’t I?). There is also a knight mentioned before but never seen directly who made a very strong impression (Uwe!).

The plot is fairly straightforward, but that doesn’t detract at all from the sheer fun. The writing is crisp and concise, and the pacing keeps things from ever feeling slow. Skorkowsky continued his trend from book 3 by utilizing a number of different POV characters, which I again enjoyed. It really helped flesh out each of the characters in the ever growing list of Valducan knights. The action was great, featuring a couple new wrinkles in the form of a few new demons and abilities from holy weapons now shown before.

As of right now, Redemptor is the last book in this series, but I’m hoping it won’t stay that way. I’d love to keep reading stories about the Valducans as long as Skorkowsky is willing to write them. So, if you like fast paced, action heavy urban fantasy with a dash of horror, some fun characters, and some awesome worldbuilding, you should totally give this series a try.

Excellent book, probably the best thus far in the series. The story was paced nicely with plenty of action and character building for the future. I am looking forward to more books in the series.

I love these books and every time a new one comes out it inevitably becomes my new favorite. They're smart, funny, fun, well-written. Somehow Skorkowsky takes this fantasy word and weaves it with ours in a way that makes it seem incredibly feasible that there are demons lurking around every corner. While I'm reading I always catch myself looking over my shoulder!

But seriously, this series has everything that I love. Exotic locales, obscure antique weapons, an excellent grasp of history, a villain you empathize with [up to a point], interesting heroes and strong heroines. Matt and Luiza! Have a baby! And I love her! Did I mention this book takes place in SOUTH AMERICA?!!!

AND my god, this book made me cry! Seriously, everything I love. Check check check...

If you love urban fantasy pick up this series, you won't be disappointed!

Another home run by Skorkowsky! I can't wait to see where Tiamat's remaining eels will show up next and which weapon's history will be front and center in the story. The anticipation is killing me!

What do you get when Seth Skorkowsky's demon-slaying Valducan Order collides with the secretive holy Paladins of the Catholic Church and the Devil's own hell spawned black knight? The best entry yet into the Valducan mythos, that's what.

Skorkowsky's REDEMPTOR is a magnificent tale of monster-hunting and international adventure.

For centuries the Valducan Order and their bitter rivals at the Vatican have protected holy weapons forged in union with the spirits of angelic avengers. Bonded to these weapons, the heroic knights wielding them have protected mankind from the ever-present threat of the monstrous demons that plague the world.

Over the ages, holy weapons have been lost, destroyed, found again, and even reforged.

What would happen if devilish deception led to a weapon being forged, not with the union of an angelic avenger, but with the spirit of a malevolent arch-demon?

Enter the unholy sword REDEMPTOR --- and the corrupted crusader who forged it --- devouring souls and binding angels and demons alike to his service with the cut of a blade.

Freed by chance from his centuries-forgotten prison, the Devil's Own Paladin rides out once more, driving catastrophe before him in a quest for revenge half a millennia in the making.

The only thing that stands between him and his apocalyptic vision is the Valducan Order and the Holy Paladins of the Vatican, joining forces once more after centuries of bad blood and distrust.

REDEMPTOR rides a wave of mayhem and bloodshed at a machine-gun pace through the arcs of vivid characters and lavishly realized exotic locales --- all set against the backdrop of the darkest corner of the Valducan Mythology and the testimony of the madman who created it.

Monsters aren't born. They're forged. Skorkowsky's REDEMPTOR is a razor-edged sliver of pure evil, guaranteed to delight.

As with previous books in the series, we learn about new weapons, knights, and now paladins. A new evil is introduced and the heroes have to find new ways to fight while at a huge disadvantage. The locations and battles are so descriptive, in keeping with Skorkowsky's style.

I loved getting to see old heroes again, but even better was new knights coming into their own and using their weapons powers in new ways. Battles with them are so unique.

I would have finished this in a single day if work hadn't gotten in the way!

Another great adventure

We have learned about the holy weapons, but what will the Knights do when they find themselves against an unholy weapon?

Oh my gosh, this was so great. Glad to be back in this world. Skorkowsky has created a world that we get to learn more about, just a little every book. It leaves you wanting more.

This book is much more tense than the previous ones. It's a race against time to save the sacred weapons and this time, the Church is involved. As with this series, expect some great action, some sadder moments and to be at the edge of your seat wanting more.

Can't wait till the next book.

In a book series about angels being kept inside weapons to fight demons you have to wonder if the demons can't do the same. Well wonder no more as we explore what happens when a demon tricks a wielder of one of the angel powered weapons that had been broken to repair it incorrectly. The result is an action packed tense running battle. My only gripe (and it is a minor one) is that the schism between our group of heroes and the Vatican lead group isn't brought up sooner in the book. Not being a major issue in the previous books this fact plays a larger role in this novel. Especially as one of the view point characters is a Vatican angel weapon wielder. I missed that kind of character tension like we had in the first book. Overall though it is a very good read.

This series man, so cool!!

I've benn a fan of the Valducan series since book one and this one didn't diminish my love for them, not a bit.

The story was great, you learn a lot more about the holy weapons and the Valducan knights, and also the church. I liked Redemptor a lot, her powers were nothing "new" but still, interesting. I was realy surprise by the new characters, especially Felicia. She is strong and determine, sweet and caring. The rest of the Valducans are back and to be honest it took me a little while till i remembered all of them because it's been almost two years since i last read Ibenus and my memory isn't the best. Nonetheless that's my problem not the books.

What i liked about this book is that it brought Matt Hollis back to the front. Damoren was always my favourite one of the series and even though i loved all of them, i've always missed Matt but not here, he's back baby!!!.

Audiobook narrated by R. C. Bray. He's great, the only problem i had was that the narration wasn't very "fluent". If i remember correctly he was the narrator for The Martian's audiobook and i don't recall the narration being similar so maybe it was a choice for this books. Either way it's not going to take you out of the story. He's really good with voices and accents.

Overall, this was a hell of a ride. This series is incredible, full of action, humor and lovable characters. I pray this wasn't the last one.

The final book of the Valducan series puts Matt, the protagonist of the first book, back into the spotlight. The point of view switches between him and Mei, the new protégé of Master Schmidt, who was introduced in the epilogue of the previous novel. We also see chapters from a couple of other characters, including the villain of the novel, but those are the two principal characters in this entry.

An ancient scourge has risen, and the Valducans are forced to team up with unlikely allies to face it before they are destroyed. I thought this was great. As I said for the third book, focusing on the Valducan Order is really where this series shines, and this book continues to do that. I wish there had been a bit more context and information given about the villain - it was all a bit too mysterious, and never really gets answered. I also wish it was longer. This book felt like it flew by! But, overall, I'd say this was probably my second favorite entry of the series, with the first book remaining king. A good conclusion to the story.

A Thrilling Finale to a Fantastic Series – 4.5 Stars

This series has been a wild ride from the very beginning, and the final book delivers exactly what a great conclusion should: higher stakes, deeper danger, and a villain so powerful you can't look away. The “big bad” in this installment is a hunter wielding a weapon capable of killing angels—a terrifying and brilliant concept that raises the tension to new heights.

From start to finish, the story is packed with thrills, and what makes it even more satisfying is the return of characters from previous books. It feels like a true culmination, with everyone coming together to face the ultimate threat. The pacing is tight, the action is intense, and the emotional payoff is worth every page.

I give the whole series a solid 4.5 stars. It’s dark, imaginative, and consistently engaging. I only wish the author would continue expanding this universe—there’s so much more to explore.

This was an interesting big bad! I love the way all of the villains in this series feel different and complex, the stakes always feel high, and I honestly worry for the character's safety. I loved exploring the powers the weapons give them, and exploring an unholy weapon.

I was less thrilled with the depiction of the Catholic church, although seeing the way they could use resources the Valducan's never dreamed of was nice. And I thought it took way too long to actually get to the team up portion of the book.
