It could be worse for Sylva Lark. She could be dead. A coma was nothing to that. Or her family moving across country for the treatment, leaving her with a big blue mark on her back.

She can handle it.

Mostly.

Except the mark glows and tingles, especially whenever transition helper Atticus Plot (Attic) is close by. She suspects he’s hiding something, and when she stumbles across a torn body bearing the same spiral marking as her own, that suspicion is confirmed.

After a few shaves with death, the truth finally comes out and the battles begin.

But not all her fights are external; her biggest one is the decision she has to make between doing the right thing for world and giving up her beloved family for good.

Ok, so I'm going to try really hard to write a coherent review right now because HOLY WOW, that was amazing!! I am flabbergasted, in awe, riding on a action-packed high of awesome.

( *_* )

This book is about Sylva, a high school senior who unknowingly dies in a motorcycle accident, and comes out of a coma with powers imbued from the blood of angels. The price of her new lease on life? To take part in the ancient struggle between demons and angels, heaven and earth. Wrapped up in Greek mythology and elements of vampirism, the fantasy setting was endlessly intriguing, and I honestly had more questions than Sylva. The story reminds me how much richness there can be with the simple premise of "good vs evil."

Sylva was a good heroine. She's just so young, but it could very well be that I'm getting older. She threw tantrums, held grudges, let appearance carry her away. But she is only 17 and there's a certain sympathy she inspires, because she's so very human. It makes her transformation that much more gut wrenching, because she didn't choose her fate.

Her humanity also casts the romance in a new light. Her attraction to the mysterious classmate Attic (who unsurprisingly turns out to be part angel, like herself) is equally awe, admiration, and lust. Attic, on the other hand, is older, stronger, and better in control of his abilities. The power imbalance is never really addressed; he crossed personal boundaries, stalks, and lies to her, all in the name of "her best interests". Don't get me wrong, I loved Attic, but he treats Sylva more like a protege, or a child, and not like an equal partner. He never really gets his comeuppance for being a patronizing little shit for most of the book. It adds a certain creep factor to their relationship I'm not sure Sunday was aiming for. (I just kinda have a thing for arrogant assholes, see Toreth ) I kept wishing Sylva did more to put him in his place.

I loved how Sylva had multiple romances. I loved her friends. I loved the ACTION, oh my god, my heart was racing! I loved the tragedy, the grief, and how freakin' angry Sylva got. This was a roller coaster. I can't wait to see what happens in Lethed.

It took a decent while for the ball to start rolling ... unfortunately Sylva was kept in the dark a decent part of the novel. But on the other hand, I had glimpses of the Sunday I know from m/m - rich family dynamics, great queer characters/subtext, hints of, ah, brotherly love ;)

In short, I'm hooked, I love this author, and I can't wait for more!!

EDIT: Wow. I've forgotten just how good this story is. Right up there with everything I love to write and read. I know the story may not be perfect, but it's my type of thing. So it's perfect to me.

Where to begin? Oh, yes:

The Plot: Is pretty basic for an YA paranormal, though with a twist. Sylva Lark wakes up cross-country and from a coma. Her family has moved there to allow better treatment. Little do the know that Sylva's doctors, as well as Sylva herself, are Guardians - bearers of Angel blood (in their Veins - hence the title) and demon hunters. Sylva must adapt to her new life, find out what's wrong with her and why she has the Vein mark and then decide whether she wants to be a Guardian or not seeing as she'd have to let go of her family and friends. Then, there's Attic, her supervisor and transition helper, soon to become trainer and love interest, and you just KNOW sparks will fly.

What I loved:
- the characters. All of them are awesome and I felt like I really got to know them. Sylva is a protagonist with personality I enjoyed following around. Not ONCE did she piss me off or make me want to scream at her to grow a brain. Even if there were times when she kinda avoided asking the right questions, she at least was aware of it.
- Attic - is not a jerk. He's a tease, which is a lot different. It's Sylva who kinda misjudges him and pushes him around emotionally. He doesn't have that annoying I'll-be-a-jerk-to-you-to-protect-you thing going on, for which I am forever grateful
- the whole process of Sylva making up her mind about becoming a Guardian or not - felt very real to me how her emotions bounced and it made sense.
- the world building - loved everything about it - including the familiar settings of forest and small town.
- the love story was just great. Nearly damn perfect! ;)
- That Sylva had powers too and used them, making her not so damsel-in-distress-ish. I hate damsels.
- it's a fun, fast story meant to be enjoyed rather than dissected. Though, if you read between the lines, you'll find some pretty awesome stuff.

What didn't bother me but could bother others:
- there are some extra words, punctuation marks and such, but who cares when it's such a fun story
- I'll be damned if I could think of anything else. I mean, I've read the lower-rated reviews and I don't agree with them - I'm a reader who remembers details, so I found no inconsistencies in the story.

BONUS: Favorite scene

I honestly recommend that everyone gave this a try if they like YA paranormal that strays a little from the classic formula. Will I read it again? Well, since this is already the second time, my guess is YES!
Will I buy the sequel? OF COURSE! I actually can't wait for it to come out! (hint, hint, Anyta!)

Okay, this series has been in my TBR list for YEARS! I originally read this book when it first came out. But when I looked for the rest in this series….*poof* I couldn’t find them anywhere. So I shelved it. But it always sat in the back of my mind, I would randomly check if the books were out only to met with disappointment when they weren’t available. When I finally purchased the third book, I was so scared that the series wouldn’t be as good as I remembered that I refused to read it for a full year.

Now, here I am on my second go-round for this series and I am SO glad it doesn’t suck! As a matter of fact, it does the opposite of suck. It…..blows? No, no, no, that isn’t right. ::shakes head::

It fricking ROCKS! Man, this author captured the emotions of a teenage girl on the cusp of adulthood so well. Sylvia is mature for the most part but backslildes a few times. She has trouble identifying her own feelings (we’ve all been there right?). She is also stubborn (I love when they have a stubborn streak) and she has this humility about her that is quite impressive for one so young.

And Attic…….

::Swoon:: This man is so patient and understanding when it comes to her learning. He allows her to fail without making her feel stupid or inadequate. He is sweet to her when she least deserves it, and he doesn’t go easy on her to ‘protect’ her but rather is harder on her because he cares so much. These traits are so attractive to me, you guys have no idea. He is a true partner in every sense of the word. ::sigh:: I loves him.

Go buy this book right now!!!!!!

I absolutely loved this book, and I can't wait to read the other two in the Guardians of the Angels trilogy.

PROS:
- The pace of the plot is perfect. It doesn't gallop along, leaving you breathless; it also doesn't drag and leave you snoring! The slower parts help us feel what Sylva Lark is experiencing.
- The descriptions are well-written. Sometimes you have to slow down your speed to follow action scenes, but not in this book. I was able to follow all of the scenes and actions without rereading to clarify.
- The plot is unique and riveting.
- There's a bit of Greek mythology (a personal favorite) mixed into the angel mythology.

CONS:
- I don't like love triangles. At all. However, the triangle played a part in the plot outside of character development for Lark; the men play important parts in the story, and their interactions with Lark affect their choices. Also, she has a more realistic attitude toward the two men, realizing early on that her feelings for one aren't really there; she chooses to avoid telling him until after a school dance (to avoid ruining everyone's night), and that's the way a normal person would handle it.

Favorite scene: (no real spoiler, though)
- Lark is at home, preparing the table for dinner. The doorbell rings, and she goes to check on the door. When she opens it and sees a guy that's been pissing her off, she immediately slams the door in his face. Then she yells at him through the door until her mother makes her let him in. I LOVED IT! Her honest reaction was satisfying and entertaining, and it's one of many thanks to her spunk.

Great Read. Can't wait to get the second book

This was a great story with a perfect introduction to the main character Sylva, and her transformation after her motorcycle accident. The family's move and new school all worked seamlessly into the story and plot development. Looking forward to reading book 2.

I didn’t like Sylva. She was very immature and made me think of a toddler stomping their foot to have everything their way. The romantic relationship was wasn’t believable. I found the whole book to be very discordant and had to make myself finish it.

Check out my blog post for a great excerpt one this book and the 2nd book, also a great giveaway too. Just click the tour banner below.

I absolutely loved this book, such a great start to an amazing series I think. I was hooked from the first few pages. I love the concept of this story, its one I never read about before. Well, not like this anyway.

Sylva is a great lead female character, she was easy to relate too. Now Atticus Plot (Attic) is absolutely yummy, I really liked him a lot, and this complicated romance was very interesting and filled with twist and turns that you won’t see coming.

The idea of the Guardians of Angels is a bit unique I think. The demons are scary too, but not so much to make it read like a horror book. Which is good, as that’s not something I like to read too much.

There never was a dull moment at all with this book. It was paced just right, not too fast, not too slow. I never felt the need to put it down, the opposite really, had to tear myself away to do things, like cook dinner –late as I lost track of time, lol- and the family wondered what could keep me from doing what I am supposed to be doing.

I really do not want to give anything away as its part of the draw of this book; the not really knowing what is up.

I think the chemistry between Attic and Sylva Lark is great; he calls her little lark, so cute.
I did have a hard time imagining a guy, a hot guy like Attic, wearing long black gloves, kept thinking about the long thin gloves ladies wore with ball gowns, so that was hard to imagine without totally giving me a thought he was strange or something. I think that part that he needs to wear gloves would have had a more “cool” factor if they were normal leather gloves guys would wear, not ones that cover the whole forearm. Guys just would not be caught dead with those kinds, and I seen no reason for that style, won’t say why he needs them at all, but am pretty sure it’s just his hands that need covered.

I found the writing style really good. I am thinking the author must be European or something as she sometimes had a phrase or word that the very American characters would say that just would not be said by an American, the one example is when one of them got some bags out of the “boot” which is actually the trunk, and I only knew that because I have some Australian friends who also say that, and had told me what that meant. Many people may not know. There are just a few instances of that. But other than that, found no flaws with this book or the writing.

I was so very heartbroken at the end, I mean just was so sad about it. I was very glad I had book 2, Lethed, if I didn’t I would have been pretty upset that I could not continue right away.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It really hooked me and tugged at my heartstrings.

I received this book from the author for my honest review.

I give the cover 3 out of 5 only because it does not fit the book at all. I had seen a different cover at a few retailers that has this same cover but shows the blue “Vein” on her back. That would at least fit somewhat. But what doesn’t fit, is that the model on the cover has blonde hair, when Sylva has long red hair, so doesn’t match the story. (Neither does the cover for book 2, dark hair with black around eyes, just seems strange, though had not finished that book as of writing this) That being said, the cover on its own, as in how it’s made and all that is fine, so nothing against the designer, just the fit of it for the book is all.

I highly recommend this series, give it a shot. A great Paranormal Romance, that is light on the romance.

This is a discordant erratically written and plotted book. The style and characters were inconsistent and lacked continuity. One of my favorite authors dabbling in a different genre maybe?

So I'm about 60 percent in, and it's not terrible, not entirely original with the whole new girl at a high school meets telepath boy thing, cough *Twiglite* cough, though thankfully the story does transition out of that routine into guardian training at a motel.. It's not entirely unimaginative either with it's take on angels, and there's quite a bit of chemistry and interesting story with the two main characters...

But damn, it could really use an editor.

Instead of just a stray comma or two, there's some missing words and continuity errors, like WHO THE FRAK IS SHIRLEY? - I swear to god she was never mentioned before until Sylva thinks about her family about nearly halfway through. "Mom, Dad, Jeffrey and Shirley's faces circled in my head" -LIKE IDK WHO THAT IS. And even if she was previously mentioned? It was a poor enough job done to have NFI who she was talking about. Maybe the cat? But I remember the cat's name was Mottles, Mots for short. It couldn't have been the cat. Her extra sibling? IDEK, because I swear she only had Jeffrey. Well, I'm not reading back again, but there are enough of other errors that I can only assume she did not exist. Lmao.

Frakking Shirley, man.

ETA: You know,... There really are a lot of Twilight 'things' in this book, like Abelin is basically CarsonCarlisleWhateverEddard'sDadWas ... you know the good doctor as head of the 'family' and HIS wife might as well be Esme. There's also.. remember the treetop thing that Ed and Belle had? Yeah, Attic and Sylva have a "treehouse" that's really high up. IDEK what's going on here, but there's definitely TOO MUCH overlap for it to be simply a coincidence. They'll prolly be playing a round of baseball before long now. lol.

ETA2: I like that Attic is a portal, that IS something for the plus mark with this book. But then I think about his full name, and that gets minus points. "Atticus Plot." - I won't fault for the Atticus Finch reference, even if I do find it obnoxious in a 'here quickly let me reference a good book to give my own book relevancy even though it doesn't have too much to do with the current story at all' type of way. But "Plot" for a last name? Hmmm... IS ABOUT ALL THE PLOT THIS BOOK HAS. Yeah.

ETA3: Now more than halfway in and the laughable continuity errors continue. -Attic is first described as having a ~silver~ earring in the beginning, an I'm pretty sure it was described as such because I was like "dude the only way that could be worse was if it were gold." AND THEN when Attic is telling Sylva about the sentimentality of the inscription of the earring later on IT IS GOLD. LOLLLLLLL.

Also... I swear that Attic's room number was 17 and somehow they give it to Jason? Like... IDK, that's strange? Am I mistaken? Again, not worth double backing to go check. And maybe that was supposed to be the sitch BUT IT IS NEVER COMMENTED ON. I don't geddit.

ETA4: THIS BOOK. I CAN'T. So,... Attic is entrusted with this pendent necklace that is 1/3 of a key to the gates of Hell. (Mucho mucho important object, right??).. SURE ENOUGH Attic takes it off simply. because. it. bothers. Sylva. AND THEN IT GETS STOLEN. Naturally. LOLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

ETA5: This a complaint for the entire book though in this later half it is entirely more relevant: they won't shut up about having sex and just how special it should be. Just stop talking, don't or don't do it, it's just sex. Please please PLEASE shut up. -And I think authors who use this sentiment should be prevented from writing again. The mystification of virginity needs to end in fiction. Seriously obnoxious. Just stop it.

ETA6: Oh no! The Volutri are coming to put Attic on trial! LMAO.

ETA7: Done. Finally I can rinse my brain from this tepid mess of a story with a large heaping of dumb on top.

Overall it was definitely entertaining for the wrong reasons, and 2 stars is prolly being kind. Ultimately, despite the errors and groan worthy developments, this story suffers from YAUN: the YA universal narrator, you've seen her before and you will see her again.

Blah.

Veined is the first book in the Guardians of The Angels Trilogy. Sylva Lark wakes up from a coma with no memory of what happened only an odd spiral mark on her back. She meets transition buddy Atticus (Attic) Plot who is meant to help her readjust to her life once again. But he carries far too many secrets. As Sylva starts to remember, she gets caught up in Attic's world and has to make a difficult choice that will change her life forever.
Absolutely amazing! It was so hard to put this book down without me wondering what was going to happen next. I was sucked right into the book feeling for each of the characters. All the characters were real and relatable making it easy to care what happened to them.
Sylva is a strong lead that doesn't always shy away from a fight, but stands up for what she believes. She's got a strong will and a caring heart. I absolutely loved Attic. He is a mysterious and interesting character. Nothing is as it seems with him until we see the real Attic. And the real Attic is worth waiting for. The ending left you wanting more. It left off with high anticipation for the next installment.
With secrets, emotions, love, evil, and death swirling around, this action-packed paranormal fantasy is a must read. This book was a unique twist on the usual YA paranormal books about angels and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recommend this for any YA fans interested in a great paranormal fantasy romance that sucks you in and doesn't give you a chance to breath. Fans of Katie Klein's The Guardians Series will also find this book enjoyable.
I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock. My rating for this book is 5 fantastic fangs!

Well this one is different, in a good way :) So, what would happen if you woke up from a coma, in a whole different place, like her family moved her there, and you didn't know that you are a supernatural creature. OOOH right :) And you're a hunter of other supernaturals. And your mentor is HAWT! lol yep, we're going there!

So Sylva is pretty awesome. She is in some serious crazy and she has a lot to decide for. These are big decisions, be a guardian and give up your whole family, or... well, just or LOL. Plus, learning about all of these secrets and powers, and being a bad ass. AND she has this mark that she needs to figure out. It's creepy. She's strong, and loyal, and funny, and not scared at all. I liked her, even in her messy moments and I look forward to seeing what she's got coming to her in the future.

Attic is... complicated. I really am trying to find the right words, but that is what comes to mind. Plus, he doesn't have the overbearing alpha thing which is refreshing. And he's got to work with Sylva, and teach her, and not fall in love with her :) He's all mysterious and of course the attraction between the two of them can't be helped :) And the ending between these two, it was bittersweet, but I can't tell you about it, because it would spoil the end, and the beginning of book two for you :)

The building of the story to match the plot line was excellent. And it's fast paced and a really easy read. It's not your usual angel book and it's definitely got good action and it'll leave you wanting more. I look forward to book two!! 4.5 ANGEL PAWS!!

I don't think I can write a review that will do this book any justice. This story is a roller coaster of emotions that left me crying like a brokenhearted teen at the end. Oh the ending...oh oh oh...every time I think about it, it kills me (but in a good-ish kind of way if that makes any kind of sense. Actually that's a lie, it broke my heart. lol) I loved everything about this book. There was never a moment so dull that I got bored and felt the need to skim. There was no over descriptive page filling and there were no pointless plot twists. From the 1st page to the last...this book had my undivided attention.
I love the world that Anyta brought me in to. Sylva is a heroine that truly deserves the title. She embodied every aspect of a heroine. I was with her through her entire heartbreaking journey and I could feel what she was feeling in the extreme new life she found herself living in.
Then there was Attic who seemed to start off as the typical teen read lead guy...but after a paragraph or two you just knew there was going to be so much more to him. He didn't spend his day pinning away for some "love at first sight" "mysterious attraction" (neither one of them did). While there was attraction at first sight, there was more to Attic and more to this slowly building relationship and you couldn't help but cheer them on.
Everyone needs to read this...just do it...SERIOUSLY!

Out of all three books in this series, Veined was my favorite. It is ultimately a love story, with the theme of good vs evil, and lots of butt-kicking action. I fell in love with the world Anyta Sunday created, and her main characters Sylva Lark, and Attic Plot.

Sylva Larks whole world comes crashing down after an accident that left her in a coma. Her family moved to a town outside of Chicago, and when she comes out of her coma she notices she has a swirl like scar below her neck on her back. Sylva tries to attend high school, and maintain a level of normalcy. She makes two friends at high school, Maddy, and Marcus, and they become inseparable.

Sylva also meets womanizer, Attic Plot. Attic is also a new student at school, and was given the responsibility of becoming Sylva's transition buddy, helping her to transition into school after her coma/accident. At fist Sylva hates Attic, he's cocky, condescending, and goes through high school girls at an immense rate. She wants nothing to do with him, and when they're arround eachother it's a battle of wits.

This changes when Sylva starts to see a softer, more caring side of Attic, and around that time is when Sylva's world gets turned upside down. She learns that everything she thought was true, is not, but through it all she has Attic by her side.

Intriguing new (to me) fantasy series about paranormal humans protecting Heaven and fighting demons. Also a romance. I loved the characters and the setting.
A few inconsistencies bothered me. Sylvia calls Atticus by his full name, then later is surprised to be told his name is Atticus. Shortly after arriving at the much-anticipated dance, they step out for air, then suddenly decide to go to the mall. It seemed incongruous.
"Fazed" is spelled phased, and "vocal chords" is used for cords. A couple words at the beginning of sentences were not capitalized.
Update: I read this again after finishing the sequel as it had been a while. Things are much clearer now. I realize that when they left the dance, Sylvia wasn't paying attention, so that's why she and the reader missed the beginning of the conversation Still, it's an awkward transition. I found a few more errors: blonde (feminine) used for men, a vase on a table is later referred to as a flower bed, hoards is used for hordes, and a couple commas should be semicolons. Finally, a date engraved a pendant by a US Civil War soldier is written as 21071862. Of course, an American would have written this date as 07211862.

Actually, I'd give it a 4.5 since the ending kind of made me longing for the sequel (and I don't really like that kind of ending :P). But I love it. I might be biased because the author is a good friend of mine, but there's something about it that hooked me up right through.

The main character, Sylva Lark, just woke up from a coma. She found out her life had completely changed. Her family had to move to a new town, she had to move to a new school, and she started to experience things she could not understand. She had to get along with this obnoxiously gorgeous guy, Attic.

Those might sound like a normal teenage problem. But the author infused a paranormal mystery, which I won't mention here because one of the best things about this book is how the author unfolds it.

I think you'll love this if you like YA fantasy/romance. It's somewhat in the genre of Twilight, and Sylva kicks ass!

What to love about Veined? Attic. LOVE him. It seems at first like he's going to be the stereotypical hot, mysterious guy. I love a hot mysterious guy as much as anyone, but there's definitely more to Attic. He really made this book for me. He's funny, sarcastic and cocky. His relationship with Sylva, the main character, starts out as antagonistic when he's assigned as her "transition helper" after she returns to school from being in a coma. Neither of them want him there and the relationship between the two is fractious, to say the least. I don't want to give too much away about what happens, but suffice it say that Attic is not at all what he seems -- and when Sylva finds out, it changes everything. Because it finally explains the blue mark that covers her back and the rising dead body count that Attic may or may not be at least partly responsible for. The ending left me reeling...and really really really dying for a sequel!

I can’t remember a book grabbing my attention from the very first page and I never wanted to let go. This is a wonderfully written novel. I LOVE Attic! The name alone makes you want to read and find out if that’s his real name and honestly just to get to know the guy more. The main character has just awoken from a coma in a strange room with a strange man. She doesn’t remember the events that lead to this moment. If you are looking for adventure, hot guys and killer twists than this is the book. This is the first book I’ve read of Anyta Sunday. I can honestly say that this will not be the last. I really need to know what’s going to happen next!!

I don't know what it is, but something about this book has me cringing every few chapters. I don't think I like sylva. Shes just, boring. Attic annoyed me a lot to begin with but is starting to grow on me and I loved little Jeffery. But really that's it. There's nothing wrong with the writing but random events that are a little two obvious for my liking keep popping up. I'm up to the part where she's watching Dracula with Jason and let me tell you...not impressed...it's like her brain just flew out of her ear and I hate heroines like that. Let's hope the ending pulls the book together or I might have to lower my star rating.

It was quite an interesting story. There's nothing I can complain about: the pace of the story is really good, likable characters (even though Attic becomes overprotective sometimes), and the fantasy elements are intriguing. I also liked the lack of instalove. The romance was nice, and didn't make me want to puke or strangle the characters. xD I think it just lacks something to make it wow,but I bet it's a million time better than other books in this genre.

Solid read, around 3.75 stars if I could rate it like that, so it gets 4 from me.

Good story. Creative and engaging. I really enjoyed the characters and the emotional impact of the overall plot concept. A few annoying typos and I definitely could have done without the language... seeing -gd- appear in a book about angels is quite unsettling! That said the story and characters are strong enough that I will read the sequel and just skip over typos and profanity. I want to see how it all ends! I've already downloaded the next book "Lethed".

This book and I have a love/hate relationship. Loved the book, hated the ending. Well written book, leaves a great space for the sequel. But my hopeless romantic side didn't enjoy the ending. I won't go into the ending, because I do recommend reading the book since it is good. It was just one that was like, how rude. But I must break down and read the next book to hopefully see the ending I would like.

I absolutely loved it! I was hooked from the beginning! I thought the world she created was very interesting. I hope she enjoys writing about these characters as much as I enjoyed reading about them! So many questions left unanswered! I really hope there is a sequel not to far down the road ;). Anyta Sunday is a great author!

Paranormal romance with supernatural twists. Yes, it's totally in the same category as Mortal Instruments and Twilight and I liked it very well. It had some harsh language and some adult situations, though nothing that would make it cross into Harlequin territory (*shudder*). Again, for a free Kindle book, it was great!

I found this story to be a different perspective on the angel theme. It is unique because the character must die and then be reborn with a vein in their back that is filled with angel blood. These individuals must survive demon attacks and the process of becoming fully acclimated to the angel blood. Of course, this creates action and suspense. The story was amusing and engaging for a fun read.
