First off, I have to say it - that cover is so misleading! :D The suspense in this series is at an all-time high, we're nearing the climax, and the stakes have never been greater, but... we get a cover with adorable Tao, her bodyguards and a WHOLE BUNCH OF... KITTENS? *Dies laughing...*

Okay okay, laughing time is over. I'm getting serious now, because this volume takes everything to a whole new level. When I say everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, I want you to understand how stressed I am. Just thinking about it sends me into a panic, followed by a desperate search online for the newest chapter... Because FEELS!!!

Many of you know my love for this series, but I honestly can't express how swept up I've become.... The characters, their world, the machinations of powerful leaders, the overwhelming themes of found family and friendship, and the heartbreaking, inspiring journey of a young woman who wants to protect the people she loves... I feel like I can't express my admiration for Mizuho's work properly. Nothing I say will do her justice.

With a possible finale looming on the horizon, I can't imagine what I will do when the series comes to a close... Yona of the Dawn has become so important to me. It's been a part of my life at a time when I feel myself becoming stronger, just like Yona. And like Yona, I've discovered my very own Happy Hungry Bunch, a found family that accepts me unconditionally. To say that I'm grateful for the journey is an understatement.

***I'm posting a few scanlations below, so if you don't want to be spoiled for anything, stop reading this now. You've been warned.***

Princess Yona is the pampered daughter of her kingdom's king. Isolated and doted on she has two childhood friends, Hak, a general who also protects her and her cousin, Suwon who helped her mourn her mother's passing and who she is crushing on big time. On her 16th birthday her entire world implodes to to a crippling betrayal... She must decide if she will fall in line or rise up and take back her kingdom.

Yona of the Dawn vol 23 really changes up everything in Yona, Hak, Yun and the dragons’ lives. Yona contemplates something she’s not even considered since the day she left the palace. The dragons do something for the first time since meeting Yona. Sinha also becomes willing to do the unthinkable. Boy was it an exciting volume!

The bonus stories were cute too amongst the super serious tone of the main story. And the art in one of the stories has a tongue in cheek edge that had me rolling on the floor. Plus to make things even more serious Hak has words for a Yona after tucking her up in his arms.

Yona of the Dawn is a long running series for good reason. It’s super compelling and keeps changing things up for our heroine and her friends. If you love princesses and dragons then you need this series...

Goodness, I laughed so hard in that final bonus chapter I feel I forgot everything else that happened! LOL!

Though saying that, if the ending was extremely funny, the beginning was an extreme gut puncher. I have always loved Yun's character, but there is something so special about him when we see him cry. I mean, not just when he cries, but I think it's a powerful thing for him to be a young man who displays his emotions so strongly and still be confident in himself. I really really love that about his character and its been so wonderful seeing him grow throughout this series.

Nothing ever stays calm in this series and I don't know why sometimes I come in hoping for that when I know I'm not getting a WHOLE volume filled with it. LOL! A few pages and even maybe a chapter, yes, but its definitely NOT going to be an entire volume like I think my brain wants.

Anyway, ramble aside, this volume amps the tension to even higher levels. While I know Yona is only 16, I do appreciate the subtle reminder that she is indeed only 16. There is so much staking on her and I think her having a moment where she is overwhelmed was completely realistic and a firm reminder of how far she is willing to go. I mean, if she is asking Hak will you go with me anywhere specifically in regards to the issue at hand, that's really amazing because she KNOWS its not going to be easy.

And definitely same for Hak! Its funny in seeing how I really didn't love his character in the beginning, but I definitely do now! His actions and choices are truly incredible and definitely admire him too in how he is willing to lay down his own "prejudices" to choose something greater. Very very very cool! (Even if internally I'm also like no, no please don't go there…)

The ship vibes were minor but were SO strong! Hak and Yona are so precious and had to laugh at Hak's antics to cheer her up. I'm really enjoying how this is a super slow burn childhood friends-to-lovers romance. Its rare to see that kind of romance I feel and had that duh moment that this is definitely one and I'm here for it!

The dragons looked amazing as always but MY HEART! And of course Zeno! Lots of powerful actions done by these young men! Oh, and SINHA'S WORDS!!!!! FLAILS!!! Couldn't help but be deeply moved by what he said!

Another great volume!

Gosh, I love this series!

It feels like every time I pick up the latest volume I fall more in love with it.

The intensity is really building up when it comes to war/violence that is happening throughout the kingdom. There is also a lot of good though and Yona does her best to keep the peace.

Yona is such a fantastic and I have enjoyed her character development throughout the series. She is so strong, brave, and I’m not even sure how she manages it all.

This is one series where I don’t just like the MC but literally everyone. Each one is so easy to love even if they were just introduced in the last volume.

The plot does get quite intense and leaves many cliffhangers to hopefully be resolved in the next volume or two. I am literally not okay and was feeling so many ways reading the last half.

Overall, this is a series I would highly recommend. I can’t wait for the next installment.

The conflict between Tao and Kouren is especially interesting because I can see both of their points of view. (Although Kouren is NOT my favorite person at the moment.)
The Dragon Warriors are pretty bad at keeping a low profile, aren't they? Actually, Yona and Hak are, too. Yun's the only one who knows how to be careful.
I didn't expect the sudden turn of events in this volume, but it definitely made things exciting! And also a little concerning. I just need the Happy Hungry Bunch to be okay. Is that too much to ask? 😅

How can I possibly resist a character who is even more obsessed with cats than I am? I don't like the plot arc as much as some of the earlier ones, but... the kitties!

4.5/5 stars

Our characters are in Xing territory, and learn about the civil unrest brewing there. Princess Tao wants peace while Princes Kouren wants war against Kohka.

Break my heart why don’t you! I just feel so bad for everyone in this volume, especially Zeno, poor Zeno! I’m pretty disappointed that I’m not liking the Sei characters, up until this point I've enjoyed every character that’s made an appearance in this series, or at least thought they suited their purposes, but I don’t quite feel that way about the new characters in this arc, the exception here being Kouren. I especially hate Mizari, though he does seem like a character straight out of Pandora Hearts (that is not a slight against Pandora Hearts!). As for Kouren, I think she’s a great addition to the cast and definitely gives off a cool vibe, and while I don’t exactly like her character, I do respect her.

Characters aside, I actually do like where the story went and the direction the story is going in this arc. I find it really interesting that our crew has to deal with political turmoil in a nation other than their own, and I am interested in learning more about Xing.

Also, Yun is my hero and those bonus chapters were amazing!

Me parece alucinante cómo está avanzando todo: la posible guerra entre ambos países, la princesa guerrera, Yona, siendo tan maravillosa como siempre; y el resto de personajes a los que cada vez quiero más <3 Me flipa este manga una barbaridad.

Yona of the Dawn just keeps coming to the table with absolute quality for a story about fantasy mixed with politics and drama. It’s so good!! This is a manga that will be a classic for generations.

“Those legs continue walking in a grim, grim direction, toward a very steep, jagged path. How could I ever let her go down a path like that all by herself? I’ll go with you, no matter where it may be. No matter who may be waiting over there.”

The night is always darkest before dawn, right? Because that is what I cling to with this incredibly grim, dark, oppressing, devastating volume.

It's been a solid minute since the last time Yona, herself just broke my heart in a million pieces, and I wasn't looking forward to the return of this trend, but seeing all the pressure that she is under and how brave she's trying to be in the face of this darkest of situations just shatter my heart in a very special way.

Without a doubt, things just went from bad to worse in a blink.

“You two must protect princess Yona. I will be all right. That woman is the light of hope that ties us all together. She mustn’t die.”

For some reason, Zeno gets some of the most gruesome and disturbing scenes in the whole manga... I really need this to stop happening.

Even though the circumstances are darkest than anything that has come before, the new cast of characters is varied and lovely, for the most part, and make for some exciting exploration. Which doesn't mean that I like them all, but I do find them fascinating.

Mizari, in particular, sets off a hundred little alarm bells in my mind with how unhinged he seems to act. I cannot say for sure that he is dangerous, but I can say that he is not exactly stable and that is unnerving.

I do like most of the new cast, though. Princess Tao and her sister, Princess Kouren, are both really interesting and so vastly different that it keeps things entertaining and dynamic. Seeing them share the same core motivation, just makes all things that little bit more complicated.

Vold and Algira bring some of the levity that I was missing, which is much appreciated. Really, all these Five Stars seem like very interesting people with their own little quirks.

“Occasionally in the castle, I’ll hear people talking about her behind her back saying that she’s a fool, or that she’s selfish. I want to punch those people right in the face. I want to tell them that they’re wrong, that the princess is nothing like that. One day, I hope that someone comes to understand the princess, someone that sees her, and not her social status and position. I hope to meet a person like that. And I would like to become good friends with that person.”

Mostly, though, the heavy emphasis applied to the bond that has been created between Yona, Hak, Yoon, and the Four Dragons and seeing them so divided is the beating heart of this volume, one that I was not prepared to have to witness.

I didn't need this particular flavor of pain.

Yes, the anti-war messaging is quite heavily introduced, again, and integral to the overall plot of this arc in particular, and it is well-executed and nuanced enough that it allows for discourse to happen around it, but it will not beat the importance of love and loyalty and friendship and the lengths you'll go for those you love.

Whatever happens, this so-yearned connection between this most unlikely of groups is what will make me remember this volume, this story, most strongly.

“There, there, you too. Don’t worry too much about the four dragons not being here. I’m not that dependable, but I’m right here by your side.”
