I loved this! I quickly became hooked by the story, and best of all is that it’s different from other vampire stories. The world is in chaos after the red lung disease has spread and people are dying horrible deaths. Most cities a now only ghost towns and most of those who live a gathered in greater cities ruled by vampires. Here there a different layers of society, those who work for and donate blood to the vampires and those who refuse to do so. We meet a girl Allison, and from here on the story takes speed. I loved Allison and the way she evolved through the story.
Review of the first book: Quite average. The beginning is promising especially the setup of the world, but it eventually feels too twee-ishly Twilight, the only somewhat developed characters are not appealing, and the amount of plot doesn't merit so many oft-useless pages.
After finishing the trilogy: Thankfully Jackal is around since he's the only one who brings the fun instead of being all dour and moralizing all the time. At least he points it out to the others. Often, true, but they rarely stray from that path so it is deserved. The ending makes sense while also being satisfying enough, so that alone puts this series above many others. Of course, Shadow of the Fox is better. Might give Iron Fey another try sometime.
This series is a long time favorite of mine. I can’t remember what year I first read it but this was the first series to give me a book hangover and I’m still suffering from it years later. It just has so much charm and is full of scenes that leave me speechless. I love following Allison in her journey throughout vampirism while trying to hold onto any remaining shreds of humanity she has left.
BTW, Zeke is cool and all, but I have the biggest crush on Kanin! 😍
