About the author

Escritor español que ha sido vinculado por parte de la crítica con el movimiento Afterpop, y crítico literario español. Nació en Tarragona, pero ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida entre Mataró y Barcelona. Ha vivido también en Argentina y en los Estados Unidos. Licenciado y doctor en Humanidades por la Universidad Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona, da clases de literatura contemporánea y de escritura creativa en esa misma universidad, e imparte clases sobre literatura y literatura de viajes en la Escola d’Escriptura del Ateneu Barcelonès. Es autor de numerosos libros, que van desde la novela hasta el ensayo y la literatura de viajes.

Entre 2000 y 2005 fue miembro del consejo de redacción de la desaparecida revista Lateral. Entre los años 2006 y 2009 fue codirector de la revista literaria Quimera junto con Juan Trejo y Jaime Rodríguez Z. Ha publicado crítica cultural en los suplementos culturales de los diarios Avui, ABC, Perfil, Clarín y La Vanguardia. Sus artículos y reportajes han aparecido en Letras Libres, National Geographic Viajes, Otra Parte, Revista de Occidente, Eñe y Lonely Planet Magazine, entre otros medios hispanoamericanos. Ha sido incluido en antologías literarias de México, España, Alemania, Cuba y Argentina.

Enjoy bookshops? I do, and I can’t imagine the vast majority of book readers not doing the same. Bookshops by Jorge Carrión is a blend of his travels and chapter-by-chapter essays on history and philosophy, showing how bookshops shape us in our pursuit of the books we want to read or simply want to own. It’s a love letter to bookshops, and one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Covering shops from the ancient to the new, Carrión pays homage to the familiar—Shakespeare & Co. in Paris—and to many in the Latin world that were completely new to me. He writes that visiting a bookshop is like crossing borders without needing a passport. Bookshops, he says, are places of ideas that shape intellectual exchange, fight censorship, and simply make us readers happy. He draws a clear distinction between the physical bookshop—bricks and mortar, where we step inside and become part of the shelves and the atmosphere—and the online bookstore, cheap but impersonal, a warehouse of “click and buy” that never requires us to leave the lounge room.

The first chapter, Always a Journey, lets us understand that bookshops are doors into other worlds—travel, fantasy, memory, discovery. Browsing offers encounters with the unexpected. It sets up the ideas that run through this essay-like book and invites us, as bookshop lovers, to reflect on our own lives as readers.

Finishing the book made me reflect on how much I have always loved bookshops. I thought about the many I’ve haunted in my home city of Brisbane. As a youngster there were several, with Folios always my first choice, sadly closed after Covid. Archives Fine Books seems to have been around forever and is still going strong—a second-hand bookshop claiming over a million books on its shelves. I love it; it embodies Carrión’s ideas of memory and discovery. I have vague memories of the Red and Black bookshop which, during the censorship and control of the Bjelke-Petersen years, felt wonderfully subversive.

Among the independents I still haunt is Avid Reader in West End, which leads naturally to the wonderful second-hand Bent Books just down the road. Not far away is The Book Merchant Jenkins, once connected to a free swap library over the river that has sadly disappeared. Logical Unsanity’s 24-Hour Book Shed was near where I worked for a few months, and I was like a moth to a lamp—such were the treasures I found. Lifeline Bookfest remains a must-visit; as I write this, it's only a couple of weeks away, and the lure of finding something I’ve craved is strong.

These days, the independents also include the little neighbourhood street libraries. In fact, I found this one in such a library. Such as this book, they add to the memory and discovery this reader will crave forever.

Even though Bookshops was released in 2013, it is highly recommended for anyone who loves the physical bookshop.

Com este livro aumentei exponencialmente a minha wishlist. Para além de ser um livro acerca de livrarias, é também acerca de várias épocas, alturas no tempo em que o livro, a literatura e a arte da escrita tinham outro valor. O que mais gostei foi de ter conhecido os espaços que alguns dos autores presentes na minha estante frequentavam. Através do livro é possível ter uma ideia das dificuldades com que tiveram que lidar na altura, os diversos países por onde passaram, quem era amigo de quem, como é que indústria funcionava. Gostei também muito de conhecer a história de formação de algumas livrarias icónicas.

Portugal não passou desconhecido ao autor referenciando a Bertrand do Chiado, a Ler Devagar e a Lello. É muito difícil não sentirmos orgulho ao ver o nosso país mencionado (e ainda para mais com três livrarias) num livro de viagens que foi eleito como um dez melhores pelo jornal Guardian.

Aspectos menos bons? A organização do livro não me pareceu muito clara, se por vezes estava em Buenos Aires, noutros regressava a Barcelona. Adicionalmente, senti que o autor não me revelou muito de si mantendo-se sempre muito objectivo em todas as descrições. Esperava ver mais sentimento reflectido na exposição desta paixão.

O livro contém também algumas fotografias mas as mesmas aparecem sem nota de referência nem nota de rodapé de forma que por vezes é difícil perceber a que sítio se refere, isto porque não aparecem ao mesmo tempo que são mencionadas no texto.

Balanço positivo para esta estreia na literatura de viagens, fiquei com vontade de mais. Assim sendo, não pude deixar de escolher alguns para as minhas próximas aquisições pois o livro tem excelentes referências nessa área (e não só).

I should have loved this book, I'm never happier than spending an hour in any bookshop but I really struggled. Part of the problem is that I am not infused with a knowledge of Latin American or Iberian literature so many of the references to authors were lost on me, Marquez is the only one I have read with any depth. However overall the author made to few concessions to his readership, making extensive assumptions about their libraries and where they have travelled. It was rather an elitist approach. Also the use of photographs was poor, they were often placed pages away from the text which referred to them without any indication of what they portrayed. Overall rather poor though the final chapter actually argued some good points and was better structured, not list based, even if I did not entirely agree.

أحب دائمًا ان أقرأ من فترةٍ لأخرى كتابًا يتحدث عن الكتب ، وجرت العادة أن يكون نصيب هذا النوع من القراءة لمانغويل إلا ان الكتاب هذه المرة كان مختلفًا.
يصحبنا خورخي كاريون في رحلة لزيارة اهم المكتبات في العالم ، وليس هذا فقط بل يسلط الضوء على تاريخ الكتب والثقافة والنقد الموجه إليهما ، وتوضيح الفروق بين المكتبة العامة والمكتبة المتخصصة ببيع الكتب!

عيب الكتاب هو الصور . فلو انها كانت ملونة وتحوي عناوين توضيحية لكان ذلك افضل بكثير...

"Librerías" de Jorge Carrión es uno de los libros más asquerosos y vomitivos que he leído en los últimos tiempos. El autor, que se define como profesor de nada menos que "teoría del viaje", escarba en un arrabal conceptual lleno de mierda liberal en busca de los trozos más olorosos de las deposiciones de sus amos para elaborar, con la pericia de un oligofréncio y un manejo de la sintaxis vergonzoso, una serie de argumentaciones ridículas e ideológicamente reprobables. El libro da grima y su creador más. Los momentos en los que se deja llevar por el lirismo son impagables. Finalista del Premio Anagrama de Ensayo.

This book, part travelogue part commentary, aims to celebrate bookshops and the role they play(ed) in the social and intellectual lives of their communities around the world, with a particular focus on the Spanish-speaking world. Although the author's aim is noble enough, it often reads like a collection of notes; the focus shifts abruptly from paragraph to paragraph within a given chapter so we go from comparing bookshops in a particular city to literary anecdotes to the challenges bookshops face today with the widespread use of the internet in the space of a couple of pages. These shifts, in my opinion, result in a meandering, unfocussed narrative that does not advance the overall aim of the book. Moreover, it seems to me that the book would have benefited from tighter editing; asides from the issues of structure, my copy contained some glaring typos (Alexandra the Great instead of Alexander the Great being an obvious example) whilst sentences tended to be overlong or grammatically awkward at times (the book is an English translation from Spanish), and images needed captions. Overall, although there were some genuinely enjoyable parts, the author's commentary tended to stay on the surface. The subject could have been explored in greater depth and focus, which, in turn, could have resulted in a genuinely more informative and enjoyable book.

Υπάρχει λόγος που δεν έχω τελειώσει αυτή την μαλακια εδώ και τόσο καιρό και αυτός είναι ότι, ανάμεσα στις ομολογουμένως ενδιαφέρουσες πληροφορίες, ο συγγραφέας κάνει έναν άτυπο πολιτικό σχολιασμό όπου και σε ο,τι τον βολεύει. Φχαριστω, δεν θα πάρω.

Και τούτο δω δεν θα πάρει μοναστερο μόνο και μόνο γιατί δεν το τελείωσα, για κανέναν άλλο λόγο.

I saw this book at the library and was immediately interested due to it's uniqueness. This was the first history book on bookshops that I had ever seen. I was drawn into it not only due to my own love of reading and books but due to my personal history with books through my Father who was a travelling book salesman for a long time and now owns his own bookshop. I loved the line in the early chapters, "... the bookshop is liquid, provisional, lasts only as long as its ability to sustain an idea over time with minimal changes. The Library is stability. The Bookshop distributes; the Library preserves." How true that is! The job of the bookshop is to distribute the printed word, and I welcome a challenge from anyone who'd like to argue against the idea that the printed word was the greatest man-made invention in history. The author here does a wonderful job of framing the importance of the bookshop in our culture heritage and walks us through brief history of the bookshop.

The author is Catalonian and the book was originally written in Spanish. Because of this, it was hard for me as an English reader to understand all of the references to Iberian and Latin American history and to relate with all of the names and bookshops in that part of the world. This resulted in many dull parts of the books that left me wanting.

I loved his journey across the U.S. and gave me excellent bookshops to visit whenever I get a chance as well as a brief history of the book-chain of stores that dominate at least the U.S. market today. Overall a good book for book lovers that gets lost in the cultural background of the author. Perhaps another book like this written by an English speaker with that cultural background would make for a better book in English.

πολύ πρωτότυπο βιβλίο, απαιτεί αρκετές γνώσεις για να διαβαστεί άνετα, αλλά ήταν ένα πραγματικό ταξίδι στα βιβλιοπωλεία του κόσμου, με έναν καθόλου ταξιδιωτικό τρόπο. πρόσωπα, είδη, ιστορίες, τόποι, καθόλου βαρετό, πολύ ενδιαφέρον.

Para quem gosta de ler e viajar, este livro é simplesmente delicioso.

Jorge Carríon leva-nos num passeio por vários países, onde seleciona as livrarias que mais o marcaram, contando pequenas curiosidades sobre cada uma - os sonhos dos seus fundadores, os escritores que passaram por lá, a intervenção social e política. Posso dizer que a minha lista de locais a visitar aumentou consideravelmente!

لا يوجد ما اقوله بصراحة ، الكتاب جميل لكنني لم اكمل قراءته ، اسلوب الكاتب عشوائي وشعرت بالفوضى اثناء القراءة لدرجة انني قرأت ثلث الكتاب ولم يبقى في ذاكرتي اي حرف مما قرأته لكن قيمته بنجمتين بسبب سهولة قراءته فقط

Me gustó mucho este libro sobre librerías y sobre la propia relación del autor con los libros y los lugares donde los compramos. El recorrido, las relaciones, sus ideas, todo me gustó. Lamento haberlo leído en digital. En el último capítulo menciona a los libros digitales y la compra virtual, tanto ha cambiado en el escaso tiempo en el que paso desde que escribió esto hasta que yo lo terminé. Incluso, algunas de las librerías que él visitó ya no existen. Todo se transforma.
Si, formamos en nuestra infancia y adolescencia nuestro vínculo con ellas. Por eso creo que cada vez que voy de vacaciones voy a la librería local y me pierdo algunas horas y compro libros que luego leeré sabiendo de donde salieron cuando los tome de mi estante.

معلومات هائلة يحويها هذا الكتاب حول المكتبات وصناعة الكتاب باسلوب رائع والغريب ان المؤلف يزور مكتبات ربما لا يعرف لغتها كما ذكر انه زار مكتبة مدبولي في القاهرة ومكتبات دينية في المغرب ومكتبات في الصين واليابان وغيرها
الصور الملحقة بالكتاب سيئة العرض واظن ان السبب من الناشر العربي وليس النسخة الاصلية وحبذا لوكانت واضحة لاضافت كثيرا للكتاب
هل ستسمر المكتبات التجارية ام تختفي وتستبدل بالبيع اون لاين هذا في علم الغيب ولكن هذه المكتبات جزء من حياة محبي القراءة

que pena ter lido esse livro no meio da peste de 2020. cada capítulo dá vontade de, ao mesmo tempo, pular num avião pra conhecer todas as livrarias que ele cita e também se perder nas ruas da própria cidade, perambular por sebos e lojinhas atulhadas de livros.

I'm really not the target audience for this but I picked it up anyway, so it's mostly my fault. I'm not nearly well-travelled or well-read enough (in English or other languages!) or will be in my lifetime to get to even familiarize myself with names of these bookshops, much less get to step inside them myself. There was no way I'd be able to keep up, but my curiosity got the better of me. It's like chatting with a companion who keeps switching to different languages when talking about all the places they've been to all around the world, with names of friends they've known or still keep up with when they go back, but you'll never make their acquaintance. You keep listening and don't have anything else to add, only thinking of how fortunate some lives are in comparison to your own. I appreciate this being translated in English but if English is your only language or your main one, this may be a bit of a challenge! You're much better off if you've travelled in South America or at least familiarized yourself with the bookshops and authors and relationships between them beforehand. Even better if you know Paris very well (yes, I haven't been either), and best of all, many of the famed bookshops in the continents of Europe and South America that are no longer with us.

PS: I wonder why pictures were even included in this book when most of them were so tiny, without captions, and the poor quality made the black-and-white shots even harder to make out. My favourites were the business cards by far because of the easily distinguishable text.

This is one of those books that feels difficult to read until you surrender to the labyrinthine logic of the author. Once you do, you're in for a fantastic tour of the amazing and humble bookshops that writers and readers call home.

سأبدأ مراجعتي للكتاب باقتباس شهير لـ "فرانسيس بيكون"
"بعض الكتب يمكن تذوّقها، والبعض الآخر يمكن ابتلاعها، والقليل منها تمضغ وتهضم."
من اسبانيا يمكنك أن تنطلق وتحلق في سماء عالية بدون قيود أو حدود وأن تحقق حلمك القديم بالسفر والترحال من خلال صفحات هذا الكتاب. توهمت في البداية أنه مجرد كتاب خفيف، ظريف لن يحوي شيئًا جديدًا وسيعرفني على أشهر المكتبات في العالم. إلا إنني وبمجرد أن بدأت في صفحاته الأولى حتى اختلفت وجهة نظري تمامًا فتوقفت عن القراءة وبداخلي نوع من الصدمة، وتذكرت حلمًا يراود كل شخص شغوف بالقراءة حلمًا قديمًا غاب واختفى بمرور السنوات، وهو أن يسافر ويرى العالم ويتعرف على مختلف الأماكن والثقافات والحضارات وعلى وجه الخصوص المكتبات. حاول أن تسأل قارئ قديم أمضى جل وقته في القراءة ما حلمك؟ سيخبرك بدون تردد المزيد من الكتب وأن أرى كل مكتبات العالم وأتنقل بين سحر الغرب والشرق. والحق أنني رغم ثقتي في المترجمة "ريم داوود" و"دار العربي للنشر والتوزيع"، ودقة وبراعة وإبداع الأولى وهدف ورسالة الأخيرة واهتمامها بكل ما هو جديد ومختلف وراقٍ، إلا ان الكتاب كان بمثابة هزة عنيفة لكل ما بداخلي. فالترجمة لم تكن ترجمة بل أشبه بمقطوعة موسيقية من نوع خاص مع كل كلمة ومعلومة جديدة أجدني في عالم بعيد. لن أحدثك عن التفاصيل ولا مكتبات بيع الكتب ولا مختلف الأشخاص والأماكن لأن الكتاب هو حالة فريدة لن تصفها كلماتي ولكن وبكل ثقة إن كنت قارئًا عاشقًا لعالم الكتب حقًا ستجد في هذا الكتاب دعوة للسفر بدون تذاكر طيران وتأشيرات وما شابه ذلك. وستلبي الدعوة وأنت سعيد منبهر وسيكون من الكتب التي يحزنك فراقه بعد الانتهاء منه. الكتاب تمت ترجمته إلى أكثر من 10 لغات وحاز على جائزة "أنا جراما" عام 2013.

Ciekawa dla bibliofili podróż z bardzo subiektywną trasą. Celem są kultowe księgarnie, niektóre z ponad stuletnią historią (to Stary Kontynent), inne z rewolucyjnymi tradycjami (to Ameryka Południowa). Poprzez zgromadzenia artystów i pisarzy, aktywistów, wędrujemy z Carrionem aż po czasy współczesne i działania korporacji księgarskich. Obserwując zjawiska kulturotwórczych księgarni Paryża, Tangeru, Nowego Jorku, Miami, obserwujemy też przesunięcie środka ciężkości kulturalno-artystycznego świata.
Podróż dość prywatna, bo kładąca nacisk na hiszańskojęzyczny świat, zgodnie z pochodzeniem autora. A od ilości odniesień i skądinąd znanych nazwisk można się pogubić. Niestety, nie posłuży ta lektura za przewodnik, bowiem przez lata, kiedy Carrion gromadził materiały, wiele z wymienionych miejsc przestało istnieć. Ale lektura smakowita, zwłaszcza, gdy ktoś lubi ferment lat 50' i 60' ubiegłego wieku.

Książka o księgarniach. Czy nie budzi to zaciekawienia samo z siebie? I czy można napisać opowieść o księgarniach z całego świata? Dziś istnieją jutro ich nie ma. Choć są i takie, które trwają mimo upływu lat. Jest to literacka podróż po czasami nieistniejących już wyspach, tradycjach, po całym świecie i jego historii i historii książek. Tym bardziej unikatowa, że prawdopodobnie nie da się jej już w całości powtórzyć.
