I gave this book two stars because the menus (although short) bordered on trendy/pretentious and used ingredients that most of my family and friends wouldn't eat. On the plus side, each menu only contained 4 dishes with 3 suggested desserts being suitable for all the menus. Suggested items that friends could bring to supplement the meal and a music and games/activities lists were nice adds-on for those who are less experienced at entertaining. Many of the menus also offer suggested alternatives for the vegetarians and vegans in your life.
I like this book despite its getting mediocre reviews here.
It has varied menus (Cuban Fiesta, Nonna's Special, Traditional etc.) It has playlists and activity suggestions to throw a good party and basic ideas for tablescapes to set the mood.
Other reviews have criticized the menus as bougie with challenging to find ingredients and expensive ideas to boot. I didn't find that to be the case. I love a good cheese board and a great craft cocktail. But I am officially an OLD with a professional job.
If I were college aged, these menus would likely be financially out of reach.
I agree with all the other reviews. Pretentious. This wasn't cozy friend affair I was picturing this was more uptown high heels, gucci etc.. and the little tiny plates you'd eat with everyone talking with their noses up in the air.
Some really good ideas and good sounding recipes. She includes timelines for each meal, suggested wine pairings and ideas for what other guests can bring to enhance the meal.
As someone who has planned and hosted many dinner events, I thought this gave a great entry point for someone who wanted to give it a try. I will certainly be trying a few recipes from this book as well as checking out the author's blog. The author provided a nice setup for choosing to use just a recipe here or there or a fully put together menu including drinks and dessert. Great suggestions and tips peppered through the book as well. I thought the games and music playlist was also a nice add...even if you didn't chose to use her suggestions it was a nice reminder to think ahead of activities and ambiance for your gathering.
Reasonably short and focused on several types of "friends for Thanksgiving" menus, it gets right to the point, giving you cogent and easy-to-understand recipes and instructions. This is a very nice book, and would do just as well for a family Thanksgiving as the friendsgivings she describes.
