It's a decent read, very informative if you have or haven't watched the series. I only read this purely because it was on my girlfriend's book shelf and was a quick read, but actually enjoyed it pretty much. Very well written and almost makes me want to pick the series up again if they actually gave a crap about their viewers
I feel a little bad including this because it's not a novel x) But I did read it, so... and even though it's not 100% canon, it's a good one for every Voltron fan.
2.5. Eh, alright I guess. Glad I read it and I like owning it as VLD merch.
With that said it's a kid's book. Has a bunch of VLD facts and thanks to the glossy pages it survived falling in water when I dropped it. It also has notes from the paladins scribbled on the margins so that was super cute and one of my favorite elements about this book (heck, 3 stars because of this alone).
However, this could've been so much better. As an adult fan of the show, it would've been cool if this was an official book approved by the actual writers of the show and had lots of new and behind the scenes fun facts. Instead there isn't much new information, and what is most disappointing is that there are even some errors (e.g. in the section where they are talking about Antok, they actually show a picture of Kolivan).
Maybe I should've kept my expectations lower because I knew it was a book geared towards kids, but also kid books can be wonderful and so much fun so I had hope.
This book is an enjoyable read but honestly pretty boring. There's not a lot of new information and it basically just recaps the first couple seasons without the majority of the charm (and it leaves a lot of good parts out because they're not incredibly plot relevant). I'd rather rewatch the first few seasons and get the full experience than just read the key plot points. Cute and fun but not very interesting. The character notes are nice though, and there's some great trivia in the character bios! That's pretty much it for the new information though.
It's a fun book for kids who watch the show. This is set around the end of Season 3 or so and is out of date, but that's ok. There are fun little notes in the text written by the paladins that keep it light and fun.
I took a star off because my copy had a bunch of printing issues. One page in particular was so offset it was pretty difficult to read, almost like someone moved the page while it was printing.
It took me forever to find at the library, but I finally read it! It is extremely tiny for a handbook and I wish it was bigger, but it was hilarious and I sped through it like Keith chasing Rolo and Nyma in the Red Lion! I absolutely loved the sidebars and the information in it. It's a great read for any Voltron fan! =)
A fun and delightful little handbook that is insightful and visually creative, a perfect guidebook for Voltron Legendary Defender fans. I was only surprised by how small it was.
This was a good, quick read. I enjoyed reading the profiles of the characters and the lions. I love this show, and I can't wait until I read the next handbook.
Lots of Klance. It was not published until the end of season two, so there are not any profiles for characters that you meet later. However, there is a page for Prince Lotor, with some notes Lance!
12/31/2017 Review: Could be a fun introduction to Voltron, but it does contain a few major spoilers for the first two seasons. There's not a whole lot of new information, so this is another book you'll really only want if you're a fan of the show. I think the margin notes from the paladins (plus Allura and Coran) were the best parts. I would've liked more of those, actually; they did a nice job of staying in the characters' voices and adding little humorous touches. Or, in the case of Shiro, emotional ones. (Which makes sense. He's my favorite character.)
06/07/2021 Reread: Reading this after the show is complete reveals some unfortunate gaps that, back in 2017, I blissfully believed they'd fill in. There's a lot of interesting worldbuilding that wasn't followed through as well as it could've been.
I do still enjoy the "handwritten" additions from the main characters - although Lance's are invariably annoying. Shiro's continue to make me emotional ("stress can do some pretty terrible things"), Hunk's are funny, Pidge's are sharply witty, and Keith has that dry, blunt earnestness I appreciate. So - entirely in character, all around! I don't know if I'd say that about the "quiz" in the back, where each paladin answers a series of questions, and you're supposed to figure out which Lion you'd pilot. But there are still fun tidbits in this book, and it does provide a pretty solid summary of the characters, overall story structure, and the first couple seasons of the show. A good resource, especially if you want to know things like: what are the Altean terms for time, or does the Castle-ship have a library?
The book is glossy and well put together, but the new cartoon is so PC that it's cringe worthy. I have followed all the incarnations of Voltron since the beginning and this one takes way too much liberty with changing the essence of the main characters.
