Nick Arnold is the author of the award winning series, Horrible Science and Wild Lives. Arnold's first published works appeared as a result of a project he was working on at the University of North London, when he was trying to teach young children. A positive review was written about him, and he started to write the "Horrible Science" books. His books are illustrated by Tony De Saulles.
For some readers this book could be "the spoonful of sugar" that helps the medicine go down. And so as a way of introducing Science to the novice and/or the Young, through humour and jokes and funny characters and equally funny illustrations, it would mostly be a Sure Thing.
However as I am a Mature Old Adult, it actually had the opposite effect - ie. metaphorically it usually caught in my throat and was difficult to digest. Children probably enjoyed what I merely disliked. The humour left me cold and was felt to be totally unnecessary. The facts alone intrigued me and kept my attention. No need really to share the Read with Oddblob from the Planet Blurb on his Adventure Tours and his tourist passengers the Snotties, an alien family from the Planet Slott, Slobslime and her baby Sloppy. In fact, they left me cold.
But I wouldn't hesitate to buy this book for the Kids. In fact, I have bought other books in this "Horrible" series for my nephews. Now they are ALL growed up, however, and more interested in Adult-Type versions of Space. No one seems to want to be a Peter Pan these days, that I know of any way. However I have read some historical "Horrible" books as a way of breaking the ice- ones about the Vikings and Shakespeare and the Victorians, as I'm certain the author, Nick Arnold, makes sure that all his information is well researched, and this is one reason I like these books VERY MUCH INDEED !!! and would usually give them 5 STARS. The illustrator, Tony de Saulles, is also to be congratulated for his well drawn and witty interpretation of the historical facts.
As a child I loved both history and science, so as you can imagine I loved both the Horrible Histories books and the Horrible Science books.
Whilst I did enjoy the Horrible Science books, I never read quite as many as I did the Horrible Histories books. For me, even as a child, the Horrible Science books seemed somewhat second rate to the Horrible Histories books.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re good books. They make learning fun in the same way as their history counterparts, there simply seems to be something lacking. Perhaps it was simply because I read the Horrible Histories first and thought this was trying too hard to be like those books, or it could have been something else – as I’ve said, I’m really not sure.
Still, the Horrible Science books are good for any science-loving child.
I think that this book is very interesting because of its science facts and all the facts about the space, the universe, the milky way, the sun, the moon, the Earth, all the stars and the aliens. There are a lot of pictures that help explain the theory /story /fact /object. In my opinion, it can be read by everyone who have always thought about what stars really are, etc, or people who have a lot of questions about the space /universe /planet..., the explanation of this book is also incredibly detailed as it fully describes the theory, for example, the gases a planet is consisted of.
It's wonderful that you've read "Horrible Science: Space, Stars and Slimy Aliens" by Nick Arnold. This book teaches us the importance of curiosity and exploring the unknown. You learned about the vast universe and the mysteries of space, showing us how much there is to discover. You can use this knowledge to stay curious in life, always asking questions and seeking new adventures. Remember, like the explorers of the cosmos, you too can reach for the stars in everything you do.
This book is a really fun way to find out about the science of outer space. It is written in a kind of silly, gross and funny way so kids will like it. It is full of slimy secrets, odd blobs and blurbi data and all kinds of facts about space, science and the solar system. It even has a few pictures here and there to make it extra interesting. If you like it there is even more to read because it is part of a series of books.
It's awesome! Horrible science books are always great, and this one is the funniest I have read so far. I love the way Horrible Science books manage to combine great humour, excellent illustrations and complex scientific concepts.
What do you think is funny? This book! What do you think is informative? This book! What do you think is beautiful with mind boggling art? This book! So read it! Why not!
It was really funny and the aliens were an amazing idea.I loved the sun interview and the fight if life existed on mars. Altogether I think it was an amazing book and I think people 8+ would like it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Excellent! 4 stars because the target audience is obviously for a child but some facts would be too confusing or complicated for them to understand, and also, the book gets a bit headachey after a while as each page looks different due to the many fonts and black & white comic book style drawings used - probably to keep kids entertained :)
It was a very amusing, interesting book where I learnt a lot more things about space. It was full of aliens, astronomy, asteroids and much more enjoyable things. It was a bundle of rock, ice and information orbiting around big balls of humor and adventure. It was the coolest book, related to science I've read.
This book is mysterious,if you want to know if there is really any aliens. It seems to me that it should be voted the best... for that I want to tell you that there is a lie in it. It thinks a big giant space meteorite, shooting star, space meteorite, etc, will land on our head. This is not true. It can really happen. Though I think that they don't know about that.
This book, although may seem rather daft at first, becomes really educational and fun at the same time! You will almost certainly learn new things after reading this book, unless you've already read it! I think this book is out of this world.
Very informative and jam packed with facts. Considering the series prides itself on presenting 'horrible' facts, the inclusion of fictional bits about aliens was a let down. However, the alien storyline was a good lead in for the presentation of many facts.
This book is great! I like all Horrible Science books. It tells me a lot about astronomical things (even stuff I already knew). It has a very good story about aliens visiting the solar system, from the Sun to Pluto. A computer called Cosmo shows about a planet as they pass that planet.
It's really funny how the author changes format to keep readers hooked in and the facts are sufficient!!!I've really learnt a lot of things from this book eg. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky as well as a character in HARRY POTTER.
