The Veil Diaries #2

When the Dead Come A Knockin'

Rate this book
My name is Alexis Delaney, and I’m your average 17-year-old girl. Except I’m a Necromancer. Which means I can see the dead, talk to them and help them move on. Well, I used to be able to. Someone has sealed the Veil. Now the dead are stuck here. And with the extra energy floating around town, the ghosts are getting stronger.

It’s been two months since I came to Spring Mountain to live with Uncle Rory. And the guys, my five best friends, have done everything they can to help since. Things for once were almost normal, my issues with the dead had become routine. Until they all found girlfriends. Now I’m back to hiding everything again. With ghosts leaving their haunting grounds at will, new people asking questions and trying to build my link to the Veil, I don’t know how the hell I’m going to pull this one off. But it can’t get that bad, right?

B.L. Brunnemer

B.L.Brunnemer has been a devoted reader since she was young. As a child, she was instantly attracted to horror stories. The plot, the suspense, the action. She loved it all. Which, as she grew, branched out into several other genres. But a strong female character always caught her eye. Through the years romance became a big part of her reading. Then she found the Young Adult/New Adult genre. But she had a problem. She never found the romance between most characters to be realistic enough for her. At least in the paranormal romance section.

So, she decided to fix that. She'd been writing for years already and had always struggled to finish a manuscript. Until, she decided to write what she wanted to read.

B.L. Brunnemer doesn't have any other publications at this time. She's just a woman, who loves a good story with great characters. And she hopes you'll love them too.

OMG what happened?!? I really liked the first book so was excited to read book 2 but I’m 5 chapters in and I literally want to chuck it out the window. If I hear someone “snort”, “smirk” or “snicker” one more time, I’m just going to lose it!!! It’s literally every other word!! And what’s up with everyone laughing over the world’s worst banter ever?? We get it, Lexi is a special snowflake adored by every male with a pulse and hated by all girls who are just jealous bitches cuz hey, she swears and likes football and calls her friends shitheads so of course, she’s every boy’s wet dream?! Between the corny sap that passes for (non) snappy banter that pointlessly goes on and on and the incessant “sunshine”, “beautiful” and “gorgeous” thrown around in honey, smooth or gravelly voices(cuz guy friends *totally* talk to their “girl” friends that way), by people with “angled” faces/jaws (I guess that means hot) I’m throwing up a little in my mouth right now... does the book get better??!! Is that why the ratings are so high? Or is everyone 13 and the teenage girly fantasy squeal just overshadows the repetitiveness and cringe inducing writing? So disappointed! I read someone else say it gets better so I’m going to push on but please someone else tell me it gets better...

The Basics:
Genre: Paranormal Reverse Harem
Series or Standalone: Series (Book 2)
Rating: 4 Stars.

Okay so, there were lots of things I liked (love) about this book.

- I love the main characters. (Zeke is grumpy man perfection and Miles is just too adorable.)
- I love the whole veil idea and where that seems to be going.
- Spoiler alert - there's a cute dog. *Heart melts*
- I love that it's taking time to build the relationships rather than rushing in. It gives it a sense of depth. No insta-love here guys!

But, there were some things that bothered me in this one.

- The guys ALL getting girlfriends. Bitchy ones at that. (Other than Riley who I'm kinda hoping for a reason to hate in the next book so we can get rid of her, it's RH for a reason after all!) *Though, if the author feels like it was necessary to the story, I'm glad she's getting it out of the way early on in the series.*
- Although I love the veil stuff, it did feel a tiny bit repetitive and drawn out. (Would of loved to see it develop just a little faster, but I am a throughly impatient individual)
- I hated that there was so much build up with Dylan. If he's not going to be in the RH, don't make me get attached to his character. (While even if he isn't going to be a part of the RH, I'd like to see his character building go somewhere and for him to be in the future of the series.)

Overall I did enjoy the book and I will be reading the next one. But I am hoping for some clear development in the RH in the next book.

*cue the screaming*

if i see the words "burst out laughing" one more time, i'm going to commit book-icide.

this book was worse than the first. her "not like other girls" vibes got worse. every second line is "the boys burst out laughing" SHE'S NOT THAT FUNNY. dylan was a pain in my ass - who is he and why is he here?? the slowburn was still actually not a burn at all. every guy randomly had a girlfriend out of nowhere. and again WHO IS DYLAN???

this series pisses me off big time, but i also can't put it down for some reason...

Augh.
Just augh.

I liked the first book well enough. It's hard to find something interesting and mellow in the supernatural department, so this seemed like a good fit for me; a way to relive Meg Cabot's "Mediator" series without rereading the same books for the fourth or fifth time. The similarities between the main characters are a little too similar at points, if you catch my drift, but it's something I chose to overlook initially.

That being said, I got to this book and the whole thing tanked. HARD. What the hell? I thought this was a ghost story, not a "Lexi is the perfect girl who can sing and is beautiful and a badass but also a super good person and all the boys randomly have girlfriends that are rude and horrible and Lexi perseveres because she has a super sexiboi herself now, yay!" series. Where are the ghosts?! Why is Alexis just ignoring the massive problem of... HELLO, GHOSTS NOT ABLE TO CROSS OVER AND BECOMING CORRUPT BECAUSE OF IT. That seems like a much larger problem than having to attend a football game with her boyfriend and sing in her friend's band. This went from semi-serious and focused to a nonsensical teenage jerk-off novel.

All of the boys suddenly having girlfriends? Wow. Magic. It all magically happened at EXACTLY the same time. How convenient. Most of these girls are awful and not the type of girls they would reasonably be with? Yay manufactured drama (that's a sarcastic yay, mind you). And again, WHERE ARE THE GHOSTS? Where are the crazy poltergeists? Why do we spend so much time talking about Lexi's limitless magic Mary Sue talents, and almost no time focused on the fact that souls are literally rotting, waiting for her to fucking do something?!

*sighs*

My biggest problem with this series is less about plot and more about the author. It so, so poorly written (sorry, but it is). I thought perhaps it was penned by a young teenager, but no, the author's bio claims she's been "writing for years."And yet it's so repetitive, more of a play-by-play than a novel. "I woke up and took a shower. Then I did my normal bathroom routine. Then I put my towel in my bedroom. Then I grabbed my purse. Then I went and ate breakfast. Then I picked up my purse again. Then I started my car. Then I drove off to [insert boy's name]'s house. And oh, weirdly it had the same layout as Asher's."

If you've paid any attention while reading this, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Someone is constantly SNORTING, or SNICKERING, or SMIRKING. It makes me wanna gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon. I mean holy hell Ms. Brunnemer, think of a different reaction for these characters. I'm so sick of the line, "[character] snorted."

I just... I'm about 1/3 of the way through this book, but I was compelled to write a review before finishing it... assuming I can stand to finish it... and I never do such blasphemous things. I had to rant though. This book makes me so angry. God, I wish I had something else to read, because I'd have ditched this teenybopper garbage hours ago -- except it's not teenybopper, is it? Because in it, teenagers are drinking, which is a huge peeve of mine. Partying, drinking, and swearing, all highly glorified by B.L. Brunnemer. Lovely.

In the author's bio it says, "She never found the romance between most characters to be realistic enough for her. So, she decided to fix that." What about these relationships are realistic? Because I was a teenager not too long ago, and I can tell you there's nothing realistic about any of this.

Ms. Brunnemer, please take a class in creative writing. Pay special attention on the parts about how to not be completely repetitive. If you've started every sentence in the past 3 paragraphs with the word "I," then you've not learned anything. If everyone's reaction to anything is to "snort," and they do so 40 times each chapter, you've not learned anything.

I'm sorry for being mean. I really am. But oh god, do they just publish anything these days? Who edited this? FIRE YOUR EDITOR. Or just... learn to write better than a 14-year-old jotting down nighttime fantasies.

....

I'm just sitting here at my computer, sighing over how terrible this is, and wondering why I'm still reading it. It's better than nothing. That's the only compliment I can pay it. It's at least very slightly better than nothing.

Oh. And on a side note, whoever narrates the audiobooks needs to be taught how to say "jammies." Pajamas is a toss up on pronunciation, but jammies is jammies, not "JAW-mees." Every time I hear it, a little piece of my brain dies.

*shakes head*

I don't think I'm going to finish this one.

reread 1/16:

it’s just as good as i remember, if not better😍😍😍

“You have a boyfriend, and you still don’t want to watch a love story?” Cece’s voice had an edge of snide to it. Stay calm, Lexie. I looked at her and said with a straight face.
“I will not eat them in a house, I will not eat them with a mouse, I will not eat them in a box, I will not eat them with a fox. I will not eat them here or there I will not eat them anywhere.” The guys burst out laughing. They laughed so hard it took them awhile to calm down. Isaac was wiping tears from his eyes.
“Ah, ah, ah man, Red just quoted Dr. Seuss!” Isaac’s face was bright red. I had to sit up because Dylan was shaking me so much.
“In an argument,” Ethan added.
“And totally won.” Asher chimed in.”

Great story, Terrible proof reading!

I really enjoyed this story (and the first book) and actually preordered it because I was so eager to see what happened next. The characters are flawed which makes for much a much more enjoyable read and the story flows well with a good mix of romance, fun and suspense/action. If I was only giving a score for the story it would be getting five stars, but it really needs a good proof reader/editor to fix it. Two stars might seem a lot to knock off for a few mistakes, but the problem is, there is a lot more than just a few mistakes. There are multiple incorrect uses of your and you're, frequent missing words (where you can understand the meaning but obvious words are missing such as, the, a, of etc and then places where there are too many words (presumably the author decided to change the phrasing but forgot to remove the old word.)There are sentences that make no sense where you have to guess at what it should say (and I don't mean the ones where Lexie is out of it and not making much sense) and there is even a chapter where one of the side characters (zekes girlfriend) name suddenly changes then returns to normal next chapter. I'm dyslexic so I understand that people can have problems with spelling, grammar and punctuation, but this is one on the many reasons to hire a proof reader. In fact I doubt they would even need to hire someone as I'm sure many people would be happy to proof read it just for the chance to read it early/for free, including me! Overall I feel this is an unacceptable standard for a book I have paid to read. If the book is updated and corrected then I will be happy to increase my review score, but as it stands the numerous issues make it so much harder for me to get through it and break my immersion in the story.

In the second book of The Veil Diaries the focus shifts more to the personal lifes of Lexie and her friends Isaac, Ethan, Zeke, Asher and Miles. There is still the paranormal component going on but a lot of the book focuses on the relations between Lexie and her boys, Lexie and her boyfriend and Lexies non relation (Riley excluded) to the girlfriends of her boy. I would have prefered more of the paranormal component like in book 1. This is the reason I decided to put in a four star rating.
Language is easy to read for a non native speaker. I liked the story so far and I am looking forward to read book 3.
Thank you to the author because after I send her an email because of the Name confusion Riley/Jinn she replyed on the same day.

Remember how in school we had to write essays with a specific number of words and we added extra words to reach that number, we said the same things again using different words. Thats what this feels like. There are 9 books in the series and nothing much happens in them. I skimmed all the drama to get to ghosts and how she will save them and the town but its not worth it.

Picked this up on Audible because apparently the KU availability dropped off after book one.. Just going to say I'm barely holding on for this series... Despite having interesting events happening throughout the story I felt like everything was dragging... I was so confused through most of this book. I mean are we permanently friend zoned.. I sped the audio up eventually just to finally get to something anything that could give me a clue on whether or not my hopes and dreams are going to be hulk smashed into the ground or not.. Finally made it through.

Alexis continues her work in book 2 to find her center and find out why the dead can't cross over anymore only to discover the veil is blocked. Lexie and her guys continue on with their lives friending it up. The guys even introduce a new dynamic to the group.. the girlfriends.. Yay (Idk if that yay conveyed the heavy amount of sarcasm that my mind is screaming into this computer.. but its there) so yea.... yaaaaaaaayyyyy mean girl girlfriends who most of course hate Lexie's guts and are willing to watch her die writhing in pain on a bathroom floor with blood oozing from her ears and nose... sorry reigning it in... Anyway the ghosts in Lexie's life are getting more and more demanding and Lex is finally at her wits end.. having to stay with the guys to ward off attacks, she is just so done being a burden on everyone.. or so she says... over and over. Heck I'm done with her being a burden too.. Where is bad A Lex? Can we have more of that?

Anyway.. Lex finally gets some info about what is needed to open back up the veil and where her gifts come from. That ending though... made every drug out minute of this worth it really.. Finally lets get these boats a freaking sailing!! ONWARD to book 3.. whenever I have a spare minute anyways lol.

A massive bummer. The first book was a good slow burn. The second, I am assuming the author is no longer using an editor or else rushed through it. The writing spiraled downhill from page one. Constant snickering, chuckling, smirking, and "smiling or speaking sweetly". Was so overused that is was distracting and made the book awkward. "Burst out laughing" was used every page, sometimes within the next paragraph. Profanity is so jacked up and overused it's now trashy and unrealistic; Lexy and some have become cartoonized as characters. Her violence and threats are so overdone it's irritating, despite the laughing. And who thinks it's fine to do a black eye from Dylan over a friend's comment that wasn't even insulting? It's hard to say how repetitive the writing was. If that's not enough, there's very little plot here. Most of it is talking in person or on the phone or texting. The ghosts take a backseat other than worrying on her being hurt, eating, sleeping. Rating 2 stars instead of 1 since I still had some interest in the main group of characters that did continue. Very disappointing.

They also way overuse the nicknames as "Red", "Beautiful" and "Sunshine", etc. Now Riley calls everyone sweetie, honey, or hon too, even people she doesn't really know. *shudders*

More Lexie Diaries

Better than book one, definitely. I wish there was more about the actual Veil. This is YA though so we get a lot of young POV.

The guys are adorable and Lexie is a strong FMC. Going to see where the next book takes me.

Now that Alexis knows the Veil is shut, she must try to link up to it in order to find a way for the souls to move on. Meanwhile, the guys admit that they all have girlfriends and meeting them doesn't go well, even when Alexis ends up with a boyfriend of her own.

I'm really enjoying this series so far. It has a Ghost Bird feel to it but with a supernatural aspect and a bit more cursing. I love how Alexis developed in this book. She was a "take no crap", sarcastic, yet lovable character already, but now we begin to see just how big her heart is for the people she cares about. We are also slowly getting to know more about the guys too and all of them are great guys. I'm definitely going to continue reading.

Wow, this book was great, all over the place, frustrating, and amazing all at once. I'll break it down.

Things that are awesome:
-I went out specifically looking for a RH book (I had read a bomb one a few months back and was itching for some more) and this one fell into my lap. Love the guys, the potential is smoking, and they all are their own characters in their own right.
-*Spoiler* There's a puppy! I am in love
-This was a bit less dramatic than the first book in the series but I am still pretty darn satisfied on the content front.
-I love that our lovely main character still has a back bone, still is amazingly strong, and competent all while being open to improvement and kindness. Its hard nowadays to find a heroine that isn't a sniffling idiot for the sake of romantic attention. But I digress.
-I like that Rory is involved with the whole necromancer business. Too many books I've read use this as a dramatic plot device to almost kill a character only to have a parental figure be totally in the dark. And later some character development where they realized all this could have been avoided if they only told mom what was happening. So glad that Rory is here, in the know, and understanding.

Things that only sort of bothered me:
-Dylan's friend group. These guys are gorgeous, funny, and seem like another amazing group of guys. But after the initial use of them for dramatic purposes they all but disappear. I liked them.
-I know Lexi needs help, she is literally in danger all the time but her internal self loathing monologues at places were a bit too long. They were conveying emotions and all but some just wouldn't freaking end. I skipped a bit there in the middle. I know, I'm evil.
-At the end there is a "The Boys" section. Loved it! Sad that only two boys spoke in it though. I wanted all their blossoming thoughts!

Things that bugged me:
-*Spoiler* Dylan. Where do I beginning... I actually really liked this guy. I thought the writing of this new exciting, passionate, developing relationship between him and Lexi was brilliant and really pulled me in. It was so involved, I thought he for sure was going to be a permanent addition to the RH in future books. BUT now he can burn in hell. I swear to god, if B.L. lets him crawl back into Lexi's life at ANY POINT I will SCREAM. He did horrible emotional damage, and I don't think it should ever be swept under the rug. I refuse. I will stop this series the moment Lexi all of a suddenly magically forgives him and losses her conviction.
-It was a bit slow, now I get that this book is supposedly a 15 book series? but despite the length (love that by the way, books are pretty short these days) not much was happening. I get the long haul development and I truly appreciate the care given and the amazing length but it felt a bit slow. I can just be picky though, I can see all these possible plot directions and I just want to see us get a move on already!
-The girlfriends. Ugh, horrible. Glad that is getting out of the way early.
-I am nervous about how the RH is going to develop. It is going very well so fair (no sleeping with two boys while toying around with the other 3 on vary degrees of disrespectful), I hope Lexi can navigate this without falling into the most annoying plot devices that some RH books use to create tension.

Things I was confused about:
- I rarely can re-read books because I see twists happening, with a dropped hint here and an out of place feeling there, pretty early on. This being said, I saw some clues peppered through the middle of the book hinting at possible stalking? But they were few and far between and left me wanted a bit more development on that front. I am hoping that this isn't some back burner boil that gets pulled out if the author has a writing slump in book 7 or something. "Look, this have been brewing for years now! I need to fix the tired plot" is a cheap device. So I hope we get more in the next book.

Overall, this book was a 5. Or perhaps a 4.8. Lots of potential, not quite the first book in the series, but looking forward for me! I just hope I can finish this series without abandoning it, I'm tired of the play outed RH troupes. I'm nervous and excited. YAY!

March 2019 Review

Thank you Sharon J for recommending this book series to me. This was an amazing read. This is my second time reading this book and I still love the story. Lexie is my favourite character. She is a bad-ass chick who I want to be friends with because she is surrounded by five good-looking guys who are protective of her, and I so wish to be in her shoes. I know that they will all fall for her and it is going to be very nice to see how much more protective they are going to be when that happens. My favourite boy is Zeke, then Asher, and then Miles. I wonder if my opinion will change as the series goes on, but I can't wait to see what B.L. Brunnemer does with these characters that I love. I am excited to read the rest of the series. Overall, a fantastic read.

January 2017 Review

Thank you Sharon J for recommending this book series to me. This was an incredible read. If you loved the first book, the second book is better. I thought Lexie was still the bad-ass, awesome girl from the first book. Except this time, she is dating Dylan. Dylan is a good character. I loved him up until he screwed up. I love the five guys in this one, and knowing that they will all fall for Lexie is making a bit nervous as I do not know what will happen when they find out they all have feeling for her. I still love Zeke the most. I just love the way he calls Lexie "Baby" and how protective he is of her. I hope he realizes he has feelings for her. Asher and Miles have made the list too. I will love to find out how they will try to resist Lexie if they do realize their feelings. I can't wait for book 3. I am loving this series. Overall, an amazing read.

I'm not going to rate it because while I do like this author's writing style, I don't think the author understands the concept of reverse-harem. All the guys are out there getting lucky and our heroine just isn't. And my rating would be very low.

All I can think of is that the author is waiting until the heroine turns 18 (she's still 17 here.)

In any case, YA is NOT my genre and I am bored-annoyed-done with the slow pace of the romance here. One of the other reviewers said there are supposed to be 15 books in this series.

this book was so absurd that it was fun.

the girlfriends popping out of nowhere… incredible. it was so hilarious and absurd that I laughed, which made it great for trashy addictive books. but at this point? who can blame me? it’s my guilty pleasure.

and then… the worst happen. Miles had a girlfriend. No. Dude. He cannot. He is too pure and sweet.

they laughing at every single thing she did was annoying af but other than that well… it was good.

Miles was by far the best one. AHHH when he read to her the hobbit? dude… ugh. My heart exploded.

God I love this series. Book 2, despite the bitch girlfriends, earns that extra star that maybe the first book didn't (so maybe 4.5 stars). Lexie has really come into her own, things are starting to make more sense, the paranormal aspects are picking up, and the guys...oh the guys!

See my book 1 review for more, but come on READ THIS SERIES! So worth it.

Update Notes: (aka me letting my inner editor out on this third read, and being ultra nitpicky)

90.0% - Okay this is SERIOUSLY annoying! I mean crazy annoying. I hate pity parties.

88.0% - Honestly, the discussions about Dylan freezing are a little off. It feels like forced author foreshadowing, because it really doesn't seem like anything that terrible. Tons of people would freak and freeze in that situation and need to gradually learn to overcome it. And you'd think everyone would understand that. I can see not trusting him to care for her, but why all the distrust that he even cares about her?

83.0% - How did no one know about the storm in advance? And wouldn't Rory be freaking?

83.0% - Hmm..and come to think of it, isn't she a beacon to the dead now? How is staying at the cemetery safe anymore? Wouldn't the dead be attracted to her light and find her there?

83.0% - Okay, I get her not wanting to go to Miles's house alone to stay. But why wouldn't the boys go stay at Miles's house WITH her instead of her staying at the cemetery? That makes no sense. (Except of course as an irritating author plot device)

78.0% - Okay, I don't get it...why suddenly all the dead appearing in the bowling alley? What about all the times she has been somewhere for ages (her house, Miles' house, etc) - why didn't a whole bunch of dead show up there too?

74.0% - Okay, so here's the thing... When Lexie is out and around people that wouldn't understand her seeing ghosts or she needs to hide what she is around, then why the hell does she not wear her beads and protection? I get (maybe) the building barriers thing as a thin excuse for her not just wearing them all the time, but there are times it makes NO sense for them not to be on! NONE. And the bowling alley was one.

72.0% - Okay, here's a question. How did Lexie not have any indication that Zeke had dogs/pets? I mean, anyone who has ever had one knows that you will continually have hair all over everything, unless you are OCD about lint rolling. And Zeke always wears black, so it should really show that hair. It is something Lexie should have noticed. Maybe B.L. Brunnemer has never had any pets?

68.0% - God, Rory is amazing...the Christmas gift thing just gets me e v e r y time. *sniffle*

63.0% -
Herbert and the McClain's had apparently met and had a chat. They were all coming across the lawn, and I had left my beads at home.
Why the fuck has she left her fucking beads at home...AGAIN?! Seriously!? This is an idiotic plot device that needs to stop. Now.

54.0% - This always kind of bugged me too. I mean, seriously, Lexie just had a huge crash, doc called, unconscious for hours, and she can’t skip friggin rock climbing for one day to get some sleep? That just makes no sense. I get her pushing on the Veil, and even maybe the Christmas shopping...but not the rock climbing.

53.0% - One of my real frustrations with Lexie - why the fuck doesn’t she properly explain things to the dead to get them to back off? Not just staying farther away, but precisely what is going on and more forcefully that she can only do so much at a time. She explains so weakly and poorly that even I would probably try to push her!

41.0% - Sigh...Dylan is like the perfect guy. Totally secure in himself and so he’s completely able to let Lexie be who she is and to be friends with all the guys. Sensitive and sweet and oh so hot. *heartbreaking*

36.0% - Anyone else notice that the days seem REALLY long? I mean, in one day they are supposed to fit in a playoff football game, two+ movies and a nap, hours hanging with Dylan's friends, photoshoot with Riley and Dylan before sunset, and then the night at Vegabond. It's doable I guess if that football game started at 8 in the morning. But I highly doubt it would ever start before 10am.

21.0% - I so love this singing scene... sigh (Ethan and Lexie singing in the piano room the first time)

13.0% - Oh and this true self meeting is SO awesome! Completely cool to see what she will likely become and theorize about what the various details mean.

10.0% - Okay, someone explain to me why the fuck she doesn't have her bracelets or other protection on while she sleeps??? Seriously!?

Ok so. The premise of this series is still a really intriguing one. I do appreciate a slow burn, but the fact that nothing happens between her or any of the harem in the first two books does start to grate on me.

In this book, it’s been two months since the last book, and Lexie starts dating Dylan, while the rest of the guys all have girlfriends. They kind of spring it on her at the beginning, and none of them even mentioned that they were talking to anyone in this time. She’s only slightly upset they kept it a secret, but surprise, only one of the girls likes her. The other three are completely hateful of her, and one doesn’t even ever meet her in person. There’s a lot of girlfriend drama in this book. I actually can appreciate OW drama, and even like it occasionally, and while this wasn’t done badly, it just seemed to go on forever.

This book also takes place over a week? Also not bad, I just wish it would’ve been edited some more. I don’t need to know what every character is wearing constantly? Just me?

Lexie was slightly better in this book as far as not being a complete “cool girl,” the one all the guys like and hit on, and who completely sucks with other girls. She doesn’t constantly try to say she’s only friends with guys because girls suck, but she does seem like the girl who every guy wants and can beat anyone up and whatever. She can play pool? She knows football stats? She knows the value of gas?

My soft spot in this series is the guys. Like, they’re all so great. I want to know more from them. I want to see things from their POV. The chapters at the end are way better than the chapters from Lexie’s. I wish we could see it more sporadically throughout. I wish there were more small glimmers to catch that maybe they’re starting to get feelings? Because while we got two POV scenes and a few sprinkles that I thought something may come up, there wasn’t enough.

My biggest and main critique: Lexie is not that funny. EVERYONE is ALWAYS laughing, chuckling or snorting at things she says that in real life would not be that funny. Please find new words to use!! And also, her “sweet” voice or smile. Or her “cutesy” voice. Like. There is no need to use these words that often or even point them out this much. PLEASE.

I am going onto the next book because I am interested if and how this relationship is going to develop. Friends to lovers is an interesting trope for me, not one that I usually go for, especially not this dragged out, but it seems realistic in the way the relationships do develop.

The necromancy part is always intriguing, even if she didn’t have the greatest times with it in this one. I hope it develops more. Also, I’d love to see more of Rory. I loved the beginning of the first book where he was featured more.

I really want to like this series but I have to say, Book 2 was an extremely difficult read. It needed to be about half as long as it was. The readers aren’t so stupid that they need every little detail explored. It could have greatly benefited from a ruthless editor who wasn’t afraid to call out repetitious writing and picked up on very obvious grammatical errors. There was even an overlooked chapter where a characters name was clearly changed and then somebody missed that chapter when making corrections. The first half of the book was painful to get through and I had a lot of trouble pushing through.

All that said? A lot of what drove me mad was counterbalanced by my love for the characters and an intriguing storyline. The dialogue is snappy and whole the language can at times be excessive I personally appreciate it. Others however might not.

This series has great potential but I suspect it’s self published? While I think that’s admirable, I think it could benefit from a pool of beta readers to help correct some of the problems that arose in this one. It’s a really interesting idea and a little more time spent fine tuning before each publication could make it incredible.

For those like me who got about a third in and were desperately looking for proof that it gets better? It does. First half of the book was like pulling teeth at times. Second half brought me back to what I enjoyed about the first.

This is the second book in the series, and while it wasn't as good as the first one, it was still really good.
This one starts out with Lexie trying her hardest to get the Veil back open, and she's having more problems with ghost getting angry than she has before. On top of that, the guys all have girlfriends, and some of them aren't so great, and then there's the issues with Dylan.

She's not sure what is going to happen next, and when more problems happen with the veil and ghosts she's just totally lost and confused. But, her guys won't give up on her no matter what.

This was a really good story. It had a great plot line, and although I really kind of hated the fact that the guys had other girlfriends, I was a little happy with what happened in the end. I just wish there had been more of a conclusion with the Veil instead of waiting on it to happen in the next book.

However, I'm super excited to see what happens next!

4.75 STARS

This was so so close to a 5-star book. I think if Lexie's relationship with Dylan was explored as deeply as her relationship with each of the guys, I would have enjoyed this far far more. Same goes for Rory. I often actually forget she has a home, let alone family.

There is just something about a snarky heroine who can hold her own, kick ass and still have time to take care of her 'family' that I love. I loved this one even more than first.

Highly recommended for YA fans.

Ok I have a lot of things to say about this one. I gave this such a low rating be cause the writing was just that bad. It was repetitive, uncreative, and the cursing was so excessive. Like literally every other word. I hated or disliked almost every character, especially Lexie. She was sexist, annoying, and honestly just plain obnoxious. But yet again, I'm ashamed to say I couldn't put it down. So 2 stars.
