The Marvelous Munroes #3

The Marquis' Kiss

Rate this book
No one in Regency London would guess that the outspoken Margaret Munroe hides a secret: she is hopelessly in love with the dashing Marquis DeGuis. But such a paragon would never look at an impoverished miss who’s been dubbed an Original for her unorthodox ways. That is, until the fellow all but tumbles into her lap at a ball.

Thomas, Marquis DeGuis, is still smarting from two disastrous courtships, but his own secret drives him to marry quickly. Why not try the Original Miss Munroe? From her ideal of living in the moment to her active role in helping the poor, Margaret challenges him. Could a kiss be all it takes to win a bride who is truly one of a kind?

Book 3 in The Marvelous Munroes series, sequel to Catch of the Season. Tagline: The Marvelous Munroes: What could be more marvelous than falling in love?

Here’s a taste:

Could it be that he had been letting a pretty face and a composed manner dictate his choice of bride?

Thomas could only wonder how many other young ladies of the ton would have thought of his happiness rather than their chances of taking Lady Janice’s place in his affections. Miss Munroe’s unlooked for devotion was so kind, he brought her hand to his lips and kissed it. The redoubtable lady stumbled, and he had to help her back onto her feet.

“Sorry,” she mumbled, swallowing convulsively. “Must have been a bump in the floor.”

Thomas looked away to give her a moment to compose herself, marveling that so small a matter as a kiss on the hand could be so disturbing. He had used the gesture any number of times with other ladies to show appreciation. Certainly his other kisses did not engender such a response. He pushed the painful thought away. That’s when he noticed the number of people staring at them. Across the room, Pinstin grinned conspiratorially at him.

Thomas frowned. Even without a second dance it seemed the ton thought he had shifted his affections. The rumors would do his reputation, and Miss Munroe’s, little good.

She must have seen the stares as well for she gave his arm a reassuring squeeze. “Do not let them trouble you, my lord. None of them would seriously believe you are courting me. I’m an Original. You have much more refined taste than to hook yourself up to one of those.”

Refined taste he might have, but it had not won him his marchioness. The young lady on his arm had already showed herself to have more appreciation and understanding than either of the young ladies he had previously courted. He wasn’t ready for another courtship, but he could not allow the gossips to say he had been using Miss Munroe, as would undoubtedly happen if he did not further their acquaintance. He stopped their walk and bowed to her.

“You underestimate yourself, madam,” he told her truthfully. “I find myself intrigued. Are you free next Friday, around three?”

She was staring again, but this time she appeared to be in shock. “Yes, certainly, what, whatever time is convenient,” she stammered.

“Until then,” he replied with a bow. As he turned to leave, he told himself he ought to be depressed. He’d been turned down again and had precipitously decided to investigate a woman who could only be called unique. Yet he felt absurdly pleased with himself.

Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing. Since her first Regency romance was published in 1998, her stories have traveled the globe, with translations in many languages including Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese. She is now the author of more than 50 works of warm, witty historical romance.

She and her husband of 30 years reside in Washington State on the way to Mt. Rainier. Regina Scott has driven four in hand, learned to fence, sailed on a tall ship, and dressed as a Regency dandy, all in the name of research, of course. Lord Thomas DeGuis has just been rejected by yet another lady (this is a sequel to Catch of the Season). His pride is wounded but his heart is not broken - at least not by love. He does believe that a family history of heart disease will end his life prematurely so therefore, he must marry and set up his nursery soon. It's getting rather difficult to do when the ladies keep rejecting him, all because of a little kiss. Thomas is determined to try again and this time he won't make the mistake of kissing his lady before they're married. An acquaintance literally thrusts him in the path of a Miss Margaret Monroe, someone he's never even given a thought to before. Margaret, however, has thought about Thomas a lot. She is madly in love with the man she thinks is a paragon of perfection but she knows one such as him is not for her. She laughs too loudly, dances too enthusiastically, races her horse in public, speaks her mind and founded a home for reformed ladies of easy virtue. Margaret's stepmother is in despair of her ever finding a husband. Thomas is captivated by Margaret's figure though she's a trifle embarrassing to be seen with. He fears gossip but recognizes that Margaret has feelings too and that she would be hurt if he abruptly rejected her. Thomas agrees to a friendship with Margaret and she accepts. Thomas is a bit preoccupied by trying to arrange a match between his younger sister and good friend Viscount Darton without much success. As he gets to know the Original Margaret Munroe he is captivated by her love for life and begins to think of her as more than a friend but steadfastly refuses to kiss her. Margaret refuses to marry unless Thomas can give her his whole heart. She wonders if she can break through his reserve to win his love.

This is not one of the better Regencies but it is not one of the worst. Thomas is a copy of Mr. Darcy but rather more of a stuffed shirt. I did not care for him much, primarily because a key component of his plot is told rather than seen. It makes the story feel rushed where it shouldn't be and doesn't engage the reader. I loved Margaret though she does not behave like a typical Regency lady, even the eccentric ones. I admired her a lot and would like to know more about her. I read this book after reading The Incomparable Miss Compton and I liked getting to know the secondary characters of that book, especially Lady Agnes. If you're a fan of the society that Regina Scott has created in her novels, you'll want to read this one. If you're new to her books and like unusual heroines, then you will want to read this book. Those expecting grand, sweeping passion look elsewhere.

The romance is kisses only but Margaret works in a home for reformed fallen women and there's a villain involved with that subplot.

Definitely not one of her better efforts, as I sifted back through the titles have previously read, was actually surprised. Marquis' Kiss didn't measure up. Especially not as rogues and rakes 6.

But then it fell out of Rogues and Rakes and became just the Marquis' Kiss
(The Marvelous Munroes #3)
reflecting on this have added that while there was little steam this was far more like a G Heyer story once reconsidering.

It just floated around like blowing soap bubbles, sometimes they had beautiful colors before they popped, other times they were colorless. It just skated along on the surface, sometimes doing fancy circles on the ice, and sometimes just lolling across. Personalities were revealed, the secondary characters, especially Aunt Agnes, swept around the plot either delighting or boring. The Kiss, which we all knew the origins of did not come until the final few, and I mean few pages. The courtship was conversational, there was a good deal of banter but not enough wit. With reservations I will thank Ms Scott for an escape from the President's daily virus briefings. The Unflappable Miss Fairchild and entire Uncommon Courtships Series was much better, The Lady Emily Capers also. Was it worth the price of escape for the hours, of course. it is peaceful reading in bed until 3am, after all the regencies balls went on that long. I have shelves of purchased titles since trump was elected, some have reread many times already, and now will be buying more. as we all go through perhaps the worst crisis of our lives whatever our age, such books that bring us into another time and place are more essential than food. there are always scrambled eggs.

I had fun reading this, the kind of Regency romance I am used to. My copy (from FreeEbooks Bay) had minor editing issues but any True Blue Regency reader can process that and still not miss the story's flow, at least ~ there are no Time Warps here. It has very credible and relatable characters and there are parts that are humorous, too. I love the irascible and spicy Aunt Agnes and of course Margaret is just the perfect heroine ~ plucky, opinionated, and an emphatic courageous woman not hesitating to fight for her causes.

Good story

This was a sweet clean read. I enjoyed it very much and I'm looking forward to reading more of Ms. Scott's work. I started with this book in this series and you don't need to have read any of the other books.

Fun story

A clean romance that is fun to read. The characters are well developed both enjoyable to love or dislike whichever is the case.
Margaret and Thomas are delightful if not a bit slow in “speaking their minds”.

I really enjoyed this sweet romance. I thought the title was odd because this book has very little kissing in it. There is a reason for the title but you will need to read the book to find out what it is.

Hands down the best of the series. I loved Margaret. She truly was an original. I loved her honesty and even how, at times, she struggled with it but remained true to herself.

The Marquis' Kiss by Regina Scott
The Marvelous Munroes Series Book Three
Thomas, Marquis DeGuis is having a tough time finding a wife. He fears a weak heart will take him as it did his father and grandfather, so he has to get his nursery started to continue the line. For a man being called the catch of the Season—he's having trouble being caught.

Margaret Munroe is from the poor side of the Munroe family. Now that her two cousins have married mere men from the country, her stepmother is that more intent on seeing Margaret well matched. The problem is that she is an Original and the ton doesn't consider that a good thing.

I loved both Thomas and Margaret. In the previous book; Catch of the Season, the reader gets a glimpse of Thomas and Margaret. All these stories have such great characters that it's easy to connect to them. Real page turners from beginning to end. This series precedes The Uncommon Courtship Series, where several of Margaret's male friends have their stories told.

A very good way to end the series. All three of these novels were very well written and I enjoyed the characters. I loved the Marquis' Aunt! Although, I will admit to being a bit annoyed with his little sister. Even though you want to feel sorry for her situation - I found her reaction at the end of the book whiny and self-absorbed. Oh well. I loved everything else about the book.

This is a cute, funny, blunt, clean story. This story points is the difference between honesty and being open. I love the way that fears are conquered and that in the end everyone is true to themselves.
