The recipes are not world-changing, but solid, workhorse formulas for dinner and potluck donations. His mother's Italian sausage sauce has become our family standard. (Must be the cup of red wine in it.)
The thing that makes this book stand out is Deluise's humor and inside-Hollywood anecdotes. Reading the names of folks that used to join Johnny Carson late at night or star in the movies I watched on cable Saturday afternoons really hit me in the nostalgias. And then you can try their stews and cookies.
What to say about this masterpiece? Charming, Folksy, Delightful. Deluise makes you feel like part of the family as he walks you through old family recipes served with love in every bite.
My favorite cookbook of all time. Being a huge Dom DeLuise fan from the get-go, I was thrilled to find this book. I was even more thrilled to be able to buy it used, cheaply, and it be autographed by the man himself! I was very excited. And, when I read it... I was thrilled. The recipes are divine, economical, and most of them are not that complicated, either. And, the stories and pictures are wonderful! They are just as amazing-- if not moreso-- than the recipes! I cannot recommended this book more highly.
Before reading this book, my only recipes for Italian food involved cottage cheese instead of ricotta. Now I can make basics (at least in New Jersey) like marinara sauce and sausage and peppers, and a few good things no one has heard of (like eggplant meatballs). Even if you don't cook, the text is entertaining!
If you've ever seen Dom Deluise in the movies, or on the talk shows, you'll enjoy this book. Entertaining stories (read "staying pregnant") and perfect, easy, italian recipes. The pasta y fagioli and egg croquettes are winners. A fabulous read and a worthwhile book for any home cook. I used to give this book as a present at bridal showers, and it seemed to be a hit.
This man loved life and food. This book was a testimony to it. He grew up in an Italian home in Brooklyn, and the recipes are Italian American. He also has recipes from many of his friends. I found quite a few really good recipes.
I loved Dom Deluise and the bits of writing in this are great...the recipes are really just pretty standard Italian recipes although I do make his Spaghetti aglia e olio recipe now over the one I used to make. Brings back the comedians of my youth (the book not the spaghetti)
This was written back in 1988. It's a good, simple, italian cookbook, written by an italian american that just so happens to be a comedian/actor, Dom DeLuise. So it's filled with funny antedotes along with his recipes, his mother's recipes, and those from a few famous friends.
Simple, delicious recipes that are accessible to anyone. Anecdotes for the ages to go along with each recipe. You feel like Dom is cooking right alongside with you.
