A new adventure begins in The World, this time featuring Rena and Shugo who are playing as the dot hackers.

I am in the mood for .hack again! I love the world and I love the franchise so much. I sadly never got into the games though I did try most of them either on PS or PC, maybe I will give it another shot soon. As this year I want to dedicate to watching all .hack anime again, read all the manga that I have. Now with us entering another year with Covid I need a world to escape to and what better world than The World. 🙂

I decided on this one first, it is one I haven’t read in years, so I don’t know all the details any more. Yay! In this manga we follow Rena and Shugo who have won a very special prize, namely the skins/outfits of the famous dot hackers! The ones who saved The World. Rena is very hyped about it as she loves the game but her twin brother Shugo.. isn’t that impressed. I have to say that I wasn’t such a big fan of Shugo in the beginning. Boasting, bragging, but also acting like this world is not interesting, not good, something silly. Rena however was such a sweet girl and I loved how hyped she was about The World and I know that if I had met her in The World, if we had a The World, I would definitely have hyped along with her. 😛 Shugo did change though, slowly. He got more interested in the world and started to kick some serious butt. Especially now that he had the bracelet he got more curious.

I loved seeing Aura again and I knew that this meant the mystery was starting fully! I have missed this girl and also instantly got her songs in my mind (played the soundtrack so much + watched the series many times). I hope we see more of her as the mystery and the story progresses.

Next to Shugo and Rena we also have Balmung (not such a big fan in this iteration especially found it creepy how he was around Rena), Mireille (who just loves treasure a bit too much at times), Hotaru (and her cute (well ish) pet), Ouka (our werewolf and I just loved this girl and how she acted).

This book is mostly humorous with a dash of adventure and fantasy and seriousness. I love it! Though of course I do hope it gets a bit more serious!

The art is really nice and I love love the style! I love the character designs.

All in all, the only thing I missed was some music, maybe next time I will put up some .hack tunes while reading manga. I would definitely recommend this one to all.

Good gamer story, perfect if you liked SAO because it's similar. It's about 2 twins that win a contest and get the avatars of two legendary players in a virtual game called THE WORLD and they start kicking ass in order to level up. Cool story, pretty addictive, gonna read the second one!

Review for complete series

I absolutely loved the character designs! Unfortunately, I like manga and I like RPGs, but an adaptation from one of the other often doesn't work for me. For the most of it, I very much felt something was lacking throughout the entire plot. There was a lack of depth for both characters and plot and the stakes never felt high enough to explain the characters' reaction. I can't quite decide whether this was wasted potential or simply not a manga for me.

Let’s start our prologue with a warning. Don’t DARE to read this before watching SIGN and LIMINALITY (made reviews about those as well, by the way). Not only you will miss the (slight) story continuity but you will also consider it a mediocre series, a thing that is not true.

Let’s proceed with some production info. In the original planning of the .hack project, there was supposed to be a different chapter of the story made for a different form of media: SIGN would be a tv series, LIMINALITY an OVA mini series, the PS2 games a RPG quatralogy and TWILIGHT a manga. The decision to make an anime adaptation of TWILIGHT not only ruined the originality of the project (one chapter per media) but also produced an inferior version of the original story that only damaged the reputation of the series.

And now, let’s end with a little advice… KEEP AWAY FROM THE ANIME! It has a lot less fan service and far worse story and characters. The ending is totally different and a lot dryer than in the manga. And not to fail to mention that it took out… (SPOILER COMING UP! SKIP THESE LINES IF YOU WANT TO AVOID IT!)

…Aura’s child! How could they replace the Dark AI programs with a bunch of sissy hackers and expect us to like it? “It’s a hype trick to make us bitch about it and keep the mythos of .hack to keep going” is most likely the reason. After all “Bad publicity, is also publicity” as they say.

(OK, SPOILER’S OVER. YOU CAN STOP ADMIRING THE SHAPE OF YOUR SCREEN NOW.)

ENJOYMENT SECTION: 8 (6 in the anime)

While the atmosphere of SIGN, LIMINALITY and the games was very serious and psychological, TWILIGHT is totally different. It’s a light-hearted comical adventure, without endless philosophical discussions and total absence of action scenes (ok, the games had plenty of action). And THIS is the reason I enjoyed it more than the others; plain and simple. While the others had a boooooring plot and a slooooow development, TWILIGHT featured fast pace, comedy, action scenes and light ecchi scenes that simply made it more interesting to watch. Not that it was great, though. Half of the jokes were mediocre and the action was quite simple and predictable (DATA DRAIN is a panacea!). But it STILL beats the aforementioned ones.

STORY & OVERALL SECTION: 7 (5 in the anime)

Four years after the events in the games, two twins, a boy named Shugo and a girl named Rena, (living mostly apart because of their parents’ marriage problems) win the character figure packs of Kite and Black Rose, the characters from the games that stopped the virus from spreading. They decide to play THE WORLD (the game) as a way to be together, even when they are apart (the game is MMORPG). In the game, Shugo is quickly killed by a virus monster but escapes the coma by Aura (the AI from SIGN) who gives him the Kite’s Twilight Bracelet (and a kiss!) and asks him to come and find her. The rest of the story is about learning to play the game, leveling up, making friends and enemies, participating in game events and facing viruses, game administrators and hackers.

The story has continuity with the previous titles mostly through cameo appearances of characters and settings. It is nothing much if seen alone and doesn’t move the story any further than the others did (GRRR!). The ending gets more dark and serious but it feels only as a poor attempt to leave us with a better last opinion about it. Overall, it’s just a superficial retelling/repeating of SIGN and the games. So, its value also drops a lot because of the lack of story originality.

ART SECTION: 6
Although the setting is THE WORLD, the graphics and sound themes are far inferior to SIGN. That is a bad thing, although they wouldn’t fit the series’ cheery atmosphere, anyway. The artwork is mostly childish and the characters look and talk silly. They are cute and that makes them a bit likeable but that is all.

CHARACTER SECTION: 5
No character gets to have a strong personality amongst all this silliness. And as far as character development goes, Shugo, Rena and Balmung (of the games) get more serious and strong-willed in the end, but that is all. Generally, all characters are there just for fun and eventually share the twins’ or Balmung’s opinions (which doesn’t really count as maturity).

VERDICT
The accused is found … NOT GUILTY! … His animated adaptation leaves a bad impression but he avoided the penalty by an inch.
It is a fun read but nothing to lose your mind over and feels poor if you read it before the other too. Another manga, named Ressentiment, takes the same premise and builds upon the themes in a lot more interesting ways.

Teen me: 5 stars
Adult me: 3.5 stars

*For the first book in a "child/teen/middlegrade/nostalgic" book, I am going with the rating younger me would have gone with, then if I read on in the series, I will rate the books what adult me believes it should be rated. If the book is a stand alone, I will go with whatever rating I feel most comfortable giving the book. Please note, I do not really think books should have an age limit. People should read what they want to regardless of the intended age group, except for kids reading erotica or something, of course.*

*3 or more is good for comics, manga or graphic novels. I never really know how to rate some of these. There are some where I'm totally in love, know automatically it is a 5 star, but then some I am just not sure about in the first couple volumes.*

--

I recently found my old manga and am going down memory lane reading them. I really like this series; it is very nostalgic. It makes me miss playing the video games for the PS2, but those things cost an arm and a leg now! :(

This first book of the long series was an awesome one. It was interesting to see all the characters come into play and show their characteristics.

Overall, the first book seemed to me like a long introduction to the characters and giving only short glimpse of the actual story of the, probably, long lasting series of the book.

In this book, I enjoyed the comic actions of the characters. I especially loved the part where the main character Shugo is ignored after winning a competition because the second place was just a much better looking guy. The reactions Shugo made was just hilarious to the readers.

This is Manga marketed to middle-schoolers, I believe. I've seen it around forever but never bothered to read it, so I did. I'm left feeling like I've been watching someone else play on the WII. This is a book about a role-playing game but you don't have a controller. Younger kids might enjoy it, but these days when 8 year olds are playing RPGs on their IPODs... I'm left wondering who would get into it. I won't be reading any more of this series.

It's a descent first book of a fantasy series takes place in a visual reality world, it's quite entertaining. Also the author did come up with interesting ideas here and there, and there's a nicely handled surprise in the ending part; but I have yet to be fully impressed, will stay tune for the rest of the series.

Shugo and Rena live in a world where there are two realities, the outside world and "The World". The latter being an extremely advance MMORPG. But things go wrong when high level enemies start terrorizing players in beginner areas of the game. Then, Shugo and Rena have to find out who is causing this in "The World". The book's themes are Social Connectedness, Hegemony and Friendship

Zum Inhalt:
Der 1. Preis!

Eigener Eindruck:

🇩🇪Weiter geht es mit dieser wunderbaren Manga-Reihe namens ".hack//The Legend of the Twilight".

Versprochen! 🎮

🇬🇧It continues with this wonderful Manga series called ".hack // The Legend of the Twilight". As you can see, this is all about gaming, because our hero Shugo slips into the character of the legendary Kite. And his twin sister Rena is the famous Black Rose in the online game The World.

This is also just Greek to you? Unfortunately, this also happens to our protagonist, who is an absolute beginner and hardly understands a word. He knows nothing about leveling and looting and how much fun you can actually have with other players online.

Sadly, the Mangas aren't for everyone at all, because they tie in with both the anime and the game series. It is still very much explained and I was very curious how it goes. Boredom didn't come up and the characters are all wonderfully worked out.

Nevertheless, I am very grateful to you for the universe around the series ".hack //", because it has created something unique. A world in which it is worthwhile to dive. Promised! 🎮

I grew up with this run of the .hack manga and (pre-quarantine) found the full set on the free shelf at work. Mid quarantine I found them again and, having nothing much better to do, decided to give them a reread. I was pleasantly surprised to realize that I still like it. All told, .hack//Legend of the Twilight is a sturdy enough little story that doesn’t require any knowledge of the daunting sprawl of the rest of the franchise to be enjoyed. It’s a bit too silly for its own good at times and I’d classify it as more of a nostalgic guilty pleasure for me than anything else but it is good. That there have been countless .hack imitators over the years is a testament to the quality of the franchise, especially its earlier releases.

This is my first .hack manga so is it fair to review this sequel without knowledge of the original? Probably not, so I gave it an extra star just for good measure.

The story stands on its own, though. I didn’t feel like I was missing much, especially because there’s not much serious plot going on in these chapters. The best way I could sum up this book is “meh.” Not a lot happens other than characters meeting each other. The art doesn’t serve much purpose other than telling you who’s talking to who and the occasional panel or two of action. Every other hand is jacked up which may sound nit picky but believe me. There’s enough deranged digits in here that it lost a star in this review.

I was pleasantly surprised when reading this manga. I watched the anime as a child, but the manga is a bit different from the anime. It left out a lot of details that the anime had such as the fact the Rena's and Shugo's parents are separated, it left out a bit of information about the old man who made the flowers bloom, flashbacks about Rena's and Shugo's past in the real world, and several other things, but the one difference that stood out to me the most was that Shugo is constantly comparing himself to a hero. Normally, the manga would have more details and information compared to the anime version, but I can't say that this applies to this manga. It was a surprise to me, but I didn't mind. It was rather refreshing to read it and not know what to expect. I enjoyed reading it and would suggest reading it if your a fan of the hack series such as "Hack roots" and the other hack series (there are too many to list).

The most realistic and advanced online gaming experience out there, The World is where this book takes place. To be fair I don't know the order of the .hack series and this is my first read. It makes sense to me and I think the book was fun enough, but I found myself feeling little to no fear, worry, or even attachment to the characters. When 14 year old twins start playing the game, they happen to become legendary avatars "Kite" and "Black Rose". The story seems to involve them unraveling the mysteries of "Twilight". I am going to further continue reading and give volume 2 a chance, but this didn't grip me like most other manga's I have read to this point.

I just read .hack//xxxx and it was ten times better because it actually had a plot and interesting character backstories.
One thing that bothers me about this volume is the fan service which I did not ask for, as well as the (soft, but repeatedly) implied sibling complex between the protagonists. 😬

Where is the overarching plot? Why does it feel like this first volume already has filler? Gimme some danger and/or trauma, thanksss.

It was fine. It’s been ages since I’ve read a graphic novel and I have never really gotten into manga so it took me a second to adjust to the reading order of the panels.

Pretty basic teen-focused story, I probably would have liked it a bit more when I was a teen myself. It does remind me of the games that I played a long time ago but I think it would be better if they leaned into it a bit more

All in all, it seems like an okay first volume. Apparently this is not the first in the full story, but it wasn’t horrible as a stand alone volume. The art was decent, although I’m not really interested in horny teenagers bleeding out of their noses due to being pervs in every chapter.

The only good thing about this manga is that most of good gamers are girls. There is nudity and a lot of fanservice. Also, a rule of thumb is that if age is mentioned, it is important. Just do not read this.
