Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.
Although known first and foremost as an author, Tove Jansson considered her careers as author and painter to be of equal importance.
Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. She said later that the war had depressed her, and she had wanted to write something naive and innocent. Besides the Moomin novels and short stories, Tove Jansson also wrote and illustrated four original and highly popular picture books.
Jansson's Moomin books have been translated into 33 languages.
Much as I love these coloured reprints, this one has a sad and uncharacteristic scene where Moominmamma kills a wild bore by throwing face powder in his eyes and then setting fire to him and eats him for a picnic. His wife comes along after and finds his remains. This seems unusual for a moomin story as the family usually befriend and stand up for every creature no matter how small or hostile, which has always been part of the appeal for me. The rest of the story was entertaining.
This one was a little over-the-top for me. I loved the Moomin ancestors and how that all ended, but I too found the killing of the boar rather shocking.… So offhand and talking to the boar’s wife… It really surprised me. Snorkmaiden’s tantrums. Not my favourite book. I did like the ship’s cat but the fact that it talked surprised me although why I’m surprised maybe that’s the surprising part. I’m still a huge fan. I loved the blurb about Tove Jansson‘s life… I think she would’ve been a wonderful neighbor to have.
Though I have loved the Moomin tv show for several years and enjoyed looking at Tove Jansson’s art of Moomin, I haven’t actually read the Moomin comics. This is the first Moomin comic added to my collection, given to me by my best friend, Stephanie. It’s a quick read and a fun little story. A bit darker at one moment than I would expect of Moomin, but still fun!
With all the excitement online about the movie, I decided to read some of the series! I love the Moomins. I think they were what I was feeling so nostalgic for the first time I saw a Ghibli film. It's the same vibe of gentle freedom and beautiful nature and loving family.
Moomins are weird, man. I would do 2 and a half stars if I could, but it did make me chuckle and smile throughout the book so 3 stars it is. Illustrations are your regular Moomin bold and bright illustrations in a comic strip form.
Haven’t looked at Moomin story for 30 years and come across them in the local library. Decided to have a look again in preparation to upcoming trip to Finland. How did I ever forget the wonderful world of Moomin. So enjoyable.
That was actually kind of sadistic/sinister for children's comic O_O.....eating someone's husband! It makes sense in context! But I admit the moomins do have a certain charm and delight.
The Moomin trolls have lots of adventures when they get stranded on an island. Some may balk at the killing and eating of the pig (but its wife doesn't mind).
I wish I understood the appeal, but alas. (But I won't rate lower on my lack of understanding.) In this tale, the Moomins end up stranded on a desert island where they encounter pirates (and a self-described beautiful prisoner the pirates kidnapped) shipwreck full of dynamite, and an ancient underground cave containing their spectral ancestors.
I know, I'm starting to get a little antsy about how many of the books on my list are graphic novels, but I saw new Moomins on the shelf at the library and had to get them.
Solomon demanded I read this one to him and I didn't think he'd have the attention span, but he did! Brief, but delightful,, with the introduction of the Moomin ancestors, the Snork Maiden falls for pirates, who are (temporarily) tamed by Moominmamma...
The story is fun, but there is no Little My (boo!), and it lacks the introspection of the short stories and novels, of which I am so fond. So, good, but I prefer the longer forms.
So delightful to have more Moomin adventures to delve into! A terrible storm leaves the Moomins stranded on a mysterious island - the very island that their ancestors once inhabited - or do the ancestor inhabit the island still?
