A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Lydia’s presence causes bickering—and a couple of small fires—while Wickham has more nefarious plans in mind….The abundance of guests soon puts a strain on her marriage as Elizabeth tries to manage the chaos while ensuring a happy Christmas for all.

Meanwhile, Georgiana is finding her suitors—and the prospect of coming out—to be very unappealing. Colonel Fitzwilliam seems to be the only person who understands her fondness for riding astride and shooting pistols. Georgiana realizes she’s beginning to have more than cousinly feelings for him, but does he return them? And what kind of secrets is he hiding?

Romance and merriment abound as everyone gathers to celebrate a Very Darcy Christmas.

Bet Elizabeth doesn’t hang the greenery early next Christmas

Oh-my-goodness, right off the bat everything went downhill. All Elizabeth and Darcy wanted for the holidays was to spend time… together… alone. While Darcy was out and about on estate business, everything back at Pemberley fell apart at a rapid pace. First, Mr. & Mrs. Bennet descended in a flurry. Mrs. Long had convinced Mrs. Bennet that the French were going to invade and she wanted to be far in the north where it was safe. Following close behind them, Georgiana was in a hasty retreat from Rosings Park where she had intended to spend the holidays. It seemed Aunt Catherine had ambushed her with two suitors. Before Elizabeth could catch her breath, our dear Colonel Fitzwilliam walked in having received an express at Matlock saying Georgiana had bolted from Rosings. He had come to check on her. On his tail, Lady Catherine stormed the doors at Pemberley with her retinue of servants along with said two suitors in tow. So, she said, Georgiana could become better acquainted with them. Her distain and censorious glare was directed straight at Elizabeth. As Elizabeth finally drew breath, she heard the door knocker again… and… in walked Lydia AND Wickham. Oh, dear.

Dinner that night was a nightmare. Georgiana assured her brother and cousin that she was no longer intimidated by Wickham. Darcy demanded that he would not stay at Pemberley and secured a room for him at the Lambton Inn. Lydia complained and Mrs. Bennet fluttered at why Wickham was sent from Pemberley.

Elizabeth didn’t think her family could possibly embarrass her any more than they already had… and then… they out did themselves. Mrs. Bennet was clueless, ignorant and could not read a social situation if it smacked her upside the head. Poor Elizabeth eyed her father and silently implored him to do something. Remember; however, that this tactic didn’t work so well the last time when he admonished Mary at Bingley’s Ball? Well, once again, the poor man only made it worse. It was hilarious… um… rather, poor Elizabeth, bless her heart.

Elizabeth: once again had to deal with her family [mother & sister] making excessive demands on the staff and resources at Pemberley. Lydia was eating them out of house and home and loudly demanded more food at table. As bad as the previous dinner had been the subsequent dinner party with additional guests would become one of the tales of Pemberley legend. I laughed my head off. Each successive embarrassment was trumped by an even more egregious embarrassment. Oh, poor Elizabeth. Darcy, at the end of the table, sat red-faced and embarrassed as Elizabeth listened to her mother rant about the French and Lydia’s request for more food. Bless her heart.

Our dear Colonel: caught between working in a military clandestine operation and watching his young cousin being courted by two suitors. Later, he was charged as being a French spy [by none other than Mrs. Bennet], yeah. And then things got worse when they found the murdered body of Mr. DuBois, the Frenchman. Our dear Colonel was arrested and placed in jail by none other than the local magistrate Lord Robert, Viscount Barrington, who also happened to be one of Georgiana’s suitors.

Lydia: was her usual selfish, self-centered, narcissistic self… only worse, if you can believe it. She set two fires [accidentally], discharged a weapon indoors, belched at table, loudly complained, to a company of strangers about the ill treatment of her Wickham, had the manners of a dockworker and always wanted more than she deserved or could manage.

Mr. Bennet: was awful, useless, impotent to control Mrs. Bennet without the use of alcohol or chemical assistance, indolent, and helplessly unabashed in his inability to manage his family.

At least we didn’t have Caroline or Mr. and Mrs. Hurst to deal with. Also, absent from our story were Jane, Charles, Kitty, Mary, Charlotte and Mr. Collins. Thank God for small favors.

Wickham: scheming rat bastard, useless, wastrel, gambled away their funds, lying piece of… oh, sorry, blackmailer and extortionist. He was not a nice guy.

Lady Catherine: I couldn’t figure out why she followed Georgiana back to Pemberley. Well, Mrs. Reynolds finally filled Elizabeth in on one of Lady C’s maneuvers to… economize. Hilarious, I’ve never seen it used before in JAFF. That crafty old lady… she’s nobody’s fool.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! Elizabeth had tolerated her too many uninvited guests and suddenly awoke with a plan. One by one she tackled each guest with just the right incentive to get them to leave Pemberley and it be their idea. No military maneuvers were better executed that Lizzy on a mission. Brilliant and Hilarious.

Although the epilogue was nice, there were still several threads left hanging and questions unanswered.

One thing is for sure, I bet Elizabeth doesn’t hang the greenery early next Christmas.

Pemberley is Ambushed by Uninvited Guests!

Eagerly anticipating a peaceful and private first Christmas together, Elizabeth Darcy has the greenery hung around Pemberley a little early, even though is supposedly unlucky to do so. But her ideas of a quiet Christmas season are ruined when a horde of uninvited family members come to avail of themselves of Pemberley’s hospitality!

Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are the first to arrive because Mrs. Bennet is convinced the French will soon attack England, and that the farther north she goes the safer she will be. Georgiana arrives unexpectedly to escape Lady Catherine and her unbearable matchmaking. But that ends up backfiring as the old dragon follows her to Pemberley with two suitors in tow! A concerned Colonel Fitzwilliam travels to Pemberley to ascertain Georgiana’s well-being. And last but not least, the Wickhams descend upon Pemberley, thinking their presence most desired and their welcome assured. What can Darcy and Elizabeth do but try to entertain all these hard-to-please guests and pray that they will depart before Twelfth Night…

This playful holiday sequel novella by Victoria Kincaid is the perfect book to enjoy through the chaotic and bustling holiday season! It is light, fast-paced, and the antics of these characters will definitely make you laugh out loud more than once! Those who’ve read Chaos Comes to Longbourn, know that Victoria Kincaid has a wicked sense of humor and a talent for channeling Jane Austen’s more eccentric and exasperating characters! She continues to do that superbly in her latest release!

But what I especially loved about this novella was how Victoria Kincaid intermingled the festivities and comedy of her spirited holiday tale with a bit of drama and romance. I admire and appreciate how seamlessly and skillfully Ms. Kincaid was able to combine and interweave all these different components together. Lady Catherine, Lydia, and Mrs. Bennet, and Mr. Worthy brilliant served as comical reliefs. Drama was infused into the story through Mr. Wickham and his latest unscrupulous scheme, Colonel Fitzwilliam’s mysterious meetings, and the stress and tension between Mr. and Mrs. Darcy as they deal with their families and own personal dilemmas and insecurities.

And the romance, which was a lovely surprise, came from an unsuspecting Georgiana. While one of Lady Catherine’s matches is an epic fail, the other makes Georgiana question what it feels like to fall in love and what kind of marriage she would like to have. But is he the right match for her? Or is there someone else? Oh, I don’t want to give any of the surprises away, but I’ll just say that this storyline was definitely my favorite and I loved seeing these characters realize their true feelings and hope against hope that their love is returned. It was both adorable and tender!

Just like Pemberley, this holiday novella is jam-packed with lively characters, holiday merriment, bits of drama, and sweet surprises! An excellent choice for Austenesque, Pride and Prejudice, and Mr. Darcy fans this holiday season!!

NOTE: This story is labeled as a Pride and Prejudice Variation, but I kind thought it felt was more like a sequel since it takes place after Darcy and Elizabeth marry.

This is a nightmare of a Christmas for newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Darcy! Instead of enjoying a quiet holiday alone together, a passel of uninvited guests (including their least favorite relatives) show up without warning and require an invitation to stay at Pemberley.

Mrs. Bennet is constantly on the edge of hysteria over an imagined French invasion despite Mr. Bennet's attempts to calm her. Lady Catherine comes in pursuit of Georgiana, who fled Rosings to try to escape her aunt's machinations, and Lady C. brings along two prospective suitors for her niece, Viscount Barrington (a.k.a. Lord Robert) and Mr. Worthy. Colonel Fitzwilliam arrives after receiving a distressed letter from Georgiana, but he seems to have another motive as well. Lydia and George Wickham also show up, assuming they can invite themselves to a house party once she knows her parents are coming there. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is constantly annoyed by Pemberley's superior butler, Giles, who looks down his nose in disapproval at the mistress and all of the guests except Lady Catherine.

Although highly improbable, the story is definitely entertaining. Mr. Worthy can't stop talking about wheat, crop rotation (though he calls it "crop circulation"), and manure. Lydia is eating voraciously and accidentally causing more than one fire inside Pemberley. Whenever Mrs. Bennet goes overboard with her paranoia about Frenchmen attacking, Mr. Bennet plies her with strong wine and sedatives to the point that she falls asleep at the table. Lady C. disapproves of anything and everything, and she runs the staff ragged with all of her demands. It doesn't take long for Wickham to get booted to the inn at Lambton, but he still creates added stress for Darcy by threatening blackmail and demanding more money.

I do love this characterization of Georgiana. She's a crack shot with a pistol, loves riding horses astride, and fears that she'll never marry; she doesn't want to give these things up and won't tie herself to a husband who forbids them. Lord Robert seems like he might be a possibility, but how can she gauge what he's really like with her aunt always nearby? And how will she know if she's in love, anyway?

Elizabeth and Darcy have a stronger relationship than Elizabeth realizes, since she becomes very insecure and worried that he's unhappy with HER. She doesn't suspect that his mood is related to their unwanted guests, which seems pretty obvious even though he's not confiding his problems to her. Elizabeth's ultimate solutions to rid her home of all the annoying intruders is a wonderful payoff for the reader, particularly when it comes to Lady Catherine.

Great Christmas P&P variation!

At times in reading this tale, I wanted to grit my teeth together as one calamity after another struck Pemberley when Elizabeth and Darcy were just settled down for a long Winter's first time celebration in their honeymoon state. Not only unexpected but also totally undesired guests descend upon ODC with the weakest or weirdest of excuses..."The French are coming, the French are coming?" shrieks Mrs. Bennet and then demands that the menservants not only be armed but practice defending the estate. Yes, the Bennets and two unmarried daughters have sought refuge from the French here in Derbyshire.

Georgiana had been staying with Lady Catwitch but when that residency is belabored by the presence of two distant male relatives of the Lady. She then pushes Georgiana to accept their attentions. Thus, Georgiana, who is not yet "out" flees back to her home only to be followed by Lady Katie and the two men. And you think Mr. Collins' conversations are long-winded and boring? Wait till you read of Mr. Worthy's.

Last but IMHO the worst of all; Mr. and Mrs. Wickham show up...now you see why I am gritting my teeth?!

Murphy's Law seems to be in force here: Lydia is, again, a wrecking crew all on her own. And then the honeymoon couple begin to wonder if their "love" will survive the onslaught. Read to learn of spies, murder, imprisonments, proposals, and...how each of ODC work to find time for the other which at first seems to be fated to an impossibility.

There is romance but there are also some clever plans put forth to rescue the holidays from becoming dark and depressing. This is a well thought out story with many angles finally working as it all comes together.

This book was a gift from the author - thank you.

A Very Darcy Christmas: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

I love a happy story and this one fits the description. If there was any unhappiness, it was that Elizabeth and Darcy didn't have their quiet Christmas as planned. The family appeared out of nowhere, well somewhere, but not expected. First Mr. and Mrs. Bennet arrive because she's sure the French as coming to Meryton. Safer further North in Derbyshire. Next, Georgiana appears after she's supposed to be with Aunt Catherine at Rosings. Colonel Fitzwilliam appears since he has secret military business in the area. Then, Lydia and Wickham arrive unannounced. Lydia stays and is as disruptive and feather-brained as usual. Wickham is ushered to the inn in Lambton which sets off Mrs. Bennet's famous nerves. Then, to add insult to all of this chaos in sauntered Lady Catherine with the two young men she picked as Georgiana's suitors. All the while these chaotic guests are reeking havoc on Darcy and Elizabeth, there are Wickham's treat, the Colonel's arrest, a Lady Catherine's disapproval and outrageous requests, and the straw that finally breaks Elizabeth's controlled temper is her Darcy is in one of his blackest moods. Elizabeth decides she has enough of all the guests, except Georgiana and Fitzwilliam, and comes up with her ingenious plan to rid Pemberley of its unwanted and unwelcomed guests. When Darcy returns home to find all of the guests no longer occupying Pemberley, his surprise for Elizabeth was unnecessary, but used after Georgiana's wedding. As I stated, this was a happy story.

This book was like the description. I enjoyed it but felt the plot was too unbelieveable to make it truly enjoyable. I didn't understand why D and E put up with such ridiculous behavior from relatives and why there were no consequences for say . . . setting pemberley on FIRE. I enjoyed the characters but just felt the farce was too far fetched for a higher rating. very enjoyable nonetheless.

Dear Reader,

If you are looking for a variation with a hint of humour and a touch of Christmas spice, then look no further than this delightful story!!

Lizzy and Darcy, now happily married, are looking forward to their very first Christmas. Planning on spending some exclusive holiday time together at Pemberley, their hopes for a quiet and romantic festive period are dashed with the arrival of a tsunami of visitors!

Mrs Bennet fears a French invasion,so what better fortification than Pemberley!!

Georgiana returns with two suitors in tow, one determined to educate her in the finer points of.......well,I'll leave that to your imagination, while the other is happy to observe and wait.

Col.Fitzwilliam happened to be in the neighbourhood,Lady C,of course must have her share of the conversation, while the presence of the Wickhams is the straw that will surely break the camels back!!!

I loved this captivating and compelling story.

Not quite a comedy of errors, rather a comedy based on the premise of whatever could go wrong, will most definitely go wrong, this story stirred up a range of emotions, from laughter to fear and ridicule to pity.

The power of love, the potential power of misunderstandings, the groundless but very understandable fear of inferiority of some, the malleability of other characters, the blackmailing attempts of one,all added to the boiling pot that was Pemberley, over the holiday season.

I loved the ending of this story, especially how all the visitors were 'persuaded' to make alternate arrangements!!

Highly recommended!

I was lucky enough to win this book on Ceri's blog babblingsofabookworm.
My sincere thanks to Ceri and Victoria for such! It will always hold a social place in my heart at it's the first full book I read on my new kindle!!

A quiet, private Christmas at home for Mr. Darcy and his Elizabeth is not to be.

In the style of a Christmas comedy, the plans of Darcy and Lizzy are overturned by the arrival of several of their most colorful relations. This was a quick, engaging romp exaggerating the folly of the Darcy's relations to draw some laughs while providing a heartwarming story of what has come after the happily ever after for them and a sweet romance for Georgiana.

I enjoyed all the antics. There are four main narrators who share two main plot threads. I found them both engaging and easy to follow. There was some excitement surrounding Colonel Fitzwilliam and also Wickham that balanced out the story between comedy and drama.

The audience for this story would be those who already are familiar with the Pride and Prejudice story and want to see what comes after. Possessing an enjoyment for the absurd and lighter stories will really make this one a treat. I know I had a good time and enjoyed A Very Darcy Christmas.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

A crazy Darcy Christmas

A wonderful crazy first Christmas for Darcy and Elizabeth. It seems that there planned quite first Christmas is not to be. First Mr and Mrs Bennet descend on Pemberley, the French are coming the French are coming! Lol. Mrs Bennet feels she will be safe only at Pemberley when the French enviably evade England. Not soon afterward Georgianna shows up having had enough of Lady Catherine! Than the piece de resistance is that the great Lady herself shows up stating she is concerned for Georgiana and she has 2 suitors for Georgiana! What happens is a comedy of errors. Oh I forgot that the good Col Fitzwilliam also shows up. This story is truly diverting and I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

I really enjoyed this story about the Darcy's first Christmas together after they get married. Elizabeth really shouldn't have hung the greenery early as it just caused a heap of trouble for the Darcy's. The characters to me seemed as that would be how they would have acted if put in this situation that they created. Mr. Bennet really should have laid down some ground rules for Mrs. Bennet instead of having her be a basket case about a fictional French invasion. And really they left Kitty and Mary at home and flitted off to Scotland without them at the end of book? They are bad parents I swear.

I know it would have been the height of bad manners to kick them out but if all those people had shown up on my doorstep without being invited I would have told them they had to go. I'm surprised that Lady Catherine didn't bring Anne with her but she wouldn't have driven the plot along anyways.

This book was a pleasure to read and I'll probably enjoy it again before Christmas arrives.

Do you want a great JAFF? One that focuses heavily on the oft forgotten younger sister of our hero. Well then you should pick up this lovely book by Victoria Kincaid. Not too much angst, just enough. Romance, misunderstandings and wild adventures will keep you laughing from the get go.
Be it Lydia setting the house on fire twice. The house staff trying to get rid of Lady Catherine. A few interesting suitors for Georgiana, Mrs Bennet fearing a French invasion or the cherry on top what Colonel Fitzwilliam does to the dastardly Wickham plus much more you will not want to put this book down and will read it from cover to cover enjoying every second.
Highly recommended for any JAFF fan. You will not regret it.

I rarely skim books, but this one required it. Relatives on both sides descending upon Pemberley at Christmas and creating chaos for the newlyweds? Mrs. Bennet screeching about a French invasion, Lydia and Wickham turning up unannounced, with Lydia eating like a pig and starting fires? Lady Catherine showing up with two distant relatives in tow to force upon Georgiana as suitors? Colonel Fitzwilliam lusting after his much younger cousin?

Some readers found humor in the story, but for me, it was most unpleasant to read. I've read a number of other books by Victoria Kincaid that were enjoyable, so my own reaction to this one was a surprise.

I just loved this. Favorite quote, "You are the best Christmas gift I ever received." SIGH, this was my first JAFF book and it was great. All the main characters showed up for a very interesting Christmas and very good writing. Clean romance with lots of Austen style drama and I can't wait to read another.

As the Darcys' first Christmas approaches, they are looking forward to spending time together, alone, when a horde of relations descend on them. Unfortunately they include Mrs Bennet, Lady Catherine and the Wickhams.
Really enjoyed the story, so easy to read, and loved the interplay between Georgiana and Colonel Fitzwilliam.

Such a nice continuation for this story. There is enough conflict between our leading characters to keep it interesting. The best part of this is the lovely plot lines for Richard and Georgiana.

Cute short story about Elizabeth and Darcy's first Christmas together. The couple assume that they are going to have a nice Christmas holiday to themselves when all of their unwanted relatives arrive on their doorstep for an undisclosed amount of time. Mrs. Bennett is escaping from an unseen French invasion. She brings along Mr. Bennett, Lydia, and Wickham so that they will be protected as well. Lady Catherine de Bourgh shows up as well, along with two suitors for Georgiana's hand in marriage (Georgiana has just fled from Rosings because she wanted to avoid the suitors). Darcy and Georgiana's cousin, Richard Fitzwilliam, also arrives. Elizabeth and Darcy must survive all of the shenanigans of their unwanted guests in order to be together at Christmas. Georgiana also ends up with a much-wanted suitor by the end of the story. There are many humorous antics throughout the whole story, along with much love and romance.

This story will instantly put you into Christmas mood. Beautiful description of the Christmas preparations, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Twelve Nights. I loved every detail about it. The characters are amazing! Mrs Bennet with her obsession that the French will come to Longbourn/Pemberley then track her down wherever she goes is hilarious. There is nothing else she can talk about and apparently there is a mystery French man, indeed, in Lambton who has a mysterious business with none other than Colonel Fitzwilliam.
Generally, I am not fond of the idea of Georgiana ending up in a relationship similar to what we have seen in Jane Austen’s Emma, especially that it is a little more complicated here because of family connections, but Ms Kincaid tried to make sure as much as possible that there was a reason they ended up together. Considering the choices and the circumstances Georgiana had, it was definitely the best choice or solution, and as Lady Catherine approved it, why shall I complain… I have also very much enjoyed that a minor character like Giles, who is Mr Darcy’s butler has a little background story. There are also Mr Worthy and Lord Robert, Viscount Barrington. Mr Worthy is a bit like Mr Collins, but I think slightly more likeable and tolerable. His name is spot on, by the way. Lord Robert is quite agreeable despite Ms Kincaid’s machinations towards the end. If you have read Darcy vs. Bennet and Chaos comes to Longbourn you might remember Lord Pippinworth, especially that I wrote about him in both of my reviews where I asked the author to keep him. The most amazing thing happened as Ms Kincaid didn’t forget Lord Pippinworth and brought him back (again). From an „extra” he became a returning character. Hope to know more and more about him.

My favourite parts were the discussions over dinner. I felt like I was sitting with them. Mrs Bennet, Lydia and Mr Worthy made sure we are entertained. Probably, because I was entertained throughout the whole book, I didn’t miss the angst I’m normally looking for in any variations involving Darcy and Elizabeth.

It is a delighful Christmas story that I am going to read again at Christmas somewhere between watching Love Actually and The Holiday Engagement.

This book makes one reflect on the true meaning of the holidays and one's level of patience with family members. Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy expect to spend the holidays alone, but end up with an avalanche of family, from both sides, storm in and take over. Luckily, the Darcys deal with each visitor, tactfully I might add, to where they ring in a delightful New Year. Yet another treat from Victoria Kincaid.

OCD quiet christmas alone is not going to happen after a flood of unwanted relatives comes crushing trough theire doors.
Fires, romance ( wanted and unwanted ) is in the air, french invasion, spying, murder and badly behaved relatives threatens the happieness of ODC. Lovely and thrilling story. Worthwhile!

I was looking for a Elizabeth and Darcy story set at Christmas because of the season. And in that respect this fit the bill. However, words, phrases and out of character moments for just about every character in the book made it hard to enjoy. I still liked the ending but there was so much I disliked that I was glad when it ended. I know this author has many pride and prejudice variations and now I am unsure I will read any others.
