THIS IS THE MOST INTERESTING FAT BURNING BOOK EVER!!! And the diet it suggests TOTALLY works without fail. I have recommended and discussed and lived this book. It is more about how, why, what of the hormones that affect your body than about a "diet", which is very extreme - no carbs or sugar, but it works. And fast. The most intersting thing is that you go on ketosis without eating meat - like Atkins - and both the fluid build-up and fat melts away. It will change the way you look at your body.
I've struggled with weight loss for many years and have tried multiple programs with some success but nothing that will keep the weight off for good. When I saw this book up for review, I jumped at the chance to read yet another book about losing weight. Something about this book just seemed different to me and it was! I've heard some of this before but there's lots of new information to me and I like the way Dr. Berg presents it.
He tells you the four different body types and the best way to eat and exercise for each one. There's Adrenal, Ovary, Thyroid and Liver. I was then able to take a quiz to determine my body type. He also includes pictures for each body type so it wasn't hard to figure out which one I resemble the most and, sure enough, after taking the quiz, it matched.
He talks about triggers and blockers and there are lots of illustrations and charts to help understand what he's saying. He includes menus and recipes and has a Q&A section. The difference in his approach is to get healthy first and then the weight will come off so it's not just a diet but rather a lifestyle change.
Now, the big question: Am I doing it? Not currently. It's not an easy plan to follow. I have incorporated some of his suggestions and plan to give his program a try. I highly recommend this book to anyone that's looking to feel healthier and lose weight.
I found a few small points in this book that I just did not agree with, based on other studies and my own observation. This made me wary of everything else I read in this book. However, over all I think it has good advice. Although I did not do the diet as per laid out, I have been trying some things and have been feeling better.
I found this book to be very informative and helpful. I didn't realize that there are certain diets and types of exercises that different body types should do. There's a section with a questionnaire that helps you determine which body type you are and then chapters that follow that give support to weight loss for these types. For example, some types need more protein than others. Some do better with aerobic exercise, while for others, simple walking is enough. I also didn't realize that 80% of your hormones are effected by your liver and it's important to get your liver healthy to get the best results and maximize your hormone production. There were very good tips in meal planning as well. There were some parts that were repetitive, but overall, it was a great book and one I would recommend looking into.
There are 4 main ways that a person gains weight--4 body types. Each type has a certain way they need to eat and exercise in order to burn fat. Each type is also associated with hormones, but what surprised me was that most of the hormones are related to the liver.
Dr. Berg suggests that everyone go through a liver cleanse or detox to get the liver healthy again (at least 14 days). He has listed out what he feels is the best way to do so. Once that's done, a person is to eat and exercise according to his/her body type.
I liked having chapters dedicated to the hows, whys, and benefits to dedicating your diet to your body type. Some recipes were included, as well as meal plans. I also enjoyed having good snack ideas, as my kids are always hungry. I think a person would be able to mix and match these ideas and plans to come up with something that works for them, so a person isn't eating the same 6 meals for the rest of his/her life.
For me, personally, I found this book to be very educational. I look forward to actually trying out what I've read to see how effective it really is, but it all makes sense and sounds good.
**I received a copy for review and that in no way influenced my opinion.**
This is a great guide on why and how to do the keto diet, or I should say lifestyle, because it really is a lifestyle change.
Edit, January 12, 2020: Since I rated this, I have discovered I do much better fully as carnivore. This book is still great for some but if you reach a point where you aren't losing any more weight or you start feeling worse again, try carnivore for a few days as an experiment. Look up Carnivore Aurelius and Michaela Petersen for great advice from people like me who had to go carnivore for results. Use a macro calculator like Chronometer, plus a food scale to track everything you eat.
If you have chronic pain, exhaustion, insomnia and indigestion like I did, you might be surprised at the drastic positive change that removing fiber from your diet can make. Make sure you eat ruminants and organs, as well as other nutrient dense foods like eggs and sardines.
I was constantly waking in my sleep and rarely dreaming, plus not really remembering what I dreamed about. Now I easily sleep as long as I want, plus have one or two dreams per night that I remember when waking. My pain and fatigue are cut in half and getting better as time goes on.
I read this book because my acupuncturist recommended I learn more about my need to cut back sugar from my diet. I've never been a dieter and am not trying to lose any weight. Sure, it'd be nice to lose inches, but I'm far from the target audience for this book. The climax of the book leads up to some very specific dieting plans, which I'm not at all interested in.
However, I learned some fascinating things about the need to keep your glands and organs in healthy function so that your hormones can also operate as mother nature intended. I learned about the differences of fat-storing and fat-burning hormones and what things (exercise, sleep, and/or food) trigger these hormones. The author also goes into great detail about the different body types and how they are related to a particular organ/gland weakness. Once you are able to target your particular weakened organs/glands to achieve healthier function, then you can simply maintain your healthy lifestyle.
Basically a ketogenic diet. His two week liver cleanse sounds a little strict and fanatical. There are some good points he brings up. For example he addresses environmental estrogenic substances and the lack of potassium rich foods in the western diet.
Eric Berg´s philosophies have changed somewhat over the years so reading an older version of this book, as I did, doesn't always align with his recent YouTubes. there is still a lot of good information packed inside, but don't expect to learn about intermittent fasting in this version.
Definitely do not agree with everything in this book. I think people need to listen to their bodies more than anything else. I definitely tend to think a pro-metabolic style of eating is much more beneficial, but there are some good principles here and the liver section was very informative. Nothing super new or earth shattering for me, but a good read nonetheless. I also think that women’s needs are VASTLY different than men’s and this needs to be taken into consideration. I don’t do fasting because….well, I also don’t try to drive my car without gas in it. The advice to exercise on an empty stomach is terrible advice for women! This will wreck your hormones. I also know my body (as everyone should) and fasting has never worked for me. It is NOT for everyone. And also, where is the book about how longterm keto has basically ruined many people’s health…
I just cannot get behind fruit being an enemy, either. Nope. Do a quick study on it and how it helps your liver…raw vegetables are notoriously difficult for people to digest and our ancestors weren’t foraging through the countryside in search of wild cruciferous vegetables to get them through. Raw milk and honey are 2 of the most perfect foods in all of creation and we are told to avoid both here? And pork? It’s possibly the absolute worst meat in the entire world for you. And peanuts? Like…..no one should be consuming peanuts.

This was a very informative book on high fat low carb living. I like that he looks at weight as a symptom of a malfunctioning body not the problem. Where u carry the weight is a clue as to which system in the body, liver, thyroid, ovaries, adrenals is malfunctioning. The other thing I like about this approach is that it pushes Whole Foods! He wants you eating LOTS of non starchy vegetables!!! I’ve been eating keto for over two years now and now see that I was not getting my proper amount of potassium and micro nutrients in. Since adding my green smoothies back in I feel even more amazing! Yes he is not a Dr. He is a chiropractor but most Dr.’s have less nutritional background then he does. Yes he sales a lot of supplements but can’t a guy make a dollar! You don’t have to be a saint to have good nutritional advice. Also you don’t have to buy the supplements. The only one I’m even thinking about buying is the electrolyte one because my man works in a hot green house all day and will most likely need a boost come July and August. This was a really good approach to the ketogenic diet if your thinking of starting to live a low carb high fat medium protein diet give this book a read first it will be a great guide!
Pros: - comprehensive book and I like the recommendation per body type - tons of recipes and food recommendation - good scientific explanation with regards to hormones and body response to certain foods
Cons: - poor editing, A LOT of redundancy that creates confusion - the writing style sounds too casual which is a big turnoff for me as it sounds less credible - i despise the term 'third-world' - whoever uses this term doesn't actually get enough exposure ("DDT, another chemical that mimics hormones, was found to be stored in the fat tissues of over 99 percent of children (May 22, 2004) despite being banned in 1969. Where is this coming from? We are allowed to sell it to third-world countries such as Mexico and Chile. Take a wild guess where we purchase our fruits and vegetables in the winter months.). - I am also very sensitive to the word "WE" - does it refer to only Americans? the readers? or what? am I included in this narrative - I understand that he needs to cross-sell his merch, but this book would be more helpful if it has other alternatives to his massage tools, supplements, etc
This book and the author's website and YouTube channel are a wealth of health and nutrition information.
The book offers nutritional advice to you based on your body type. I have been following Dr. Berg's advice since about mid December 2018 and rapidly lost ~15 pounds. Although my weight loss has plateaued for now, I continue to shrink in body measurements... and that is a good thing!
There is a lot of detailed and useful information here. The only disappointment I have with the book is that it says I am one body type, but the test on the authors website says I am a '5th' body type that he doesn't cover in his book. Nevertheless, I refer to the book often to review what he says about certain topics-- which is much easier and quicker than going to YouTube to watch videos.
Most books only tell you the information and the problem but doesn't do much to help you from New habits. This book makes it easy and give resources you may use on your weight loss journey. I will update this post as I observe changes in myself and my clients. I am a fitness coach and found this book helpful. There are too many diet fads out there that are one size fits all. This book gives the option of fitting the system to the individual not the individual to the system.
My rating is based in the theory provided in the book. Everything mentioned makes perfect sense (I have a science background, so i understand some about hormones). I wish I could follow the plan, but much of the food and ingredients are more expensive than the regular food I eat. I can't afford following this plan for now, but I surely plan on doing it eventually. And I am sure it will give good results based on the explanations provided. I am keeping this book for future reference
ok, on studying diet and nutrition last several years, with help from wise counselors, I did lose about 40 lbs. I was in a good place. But, being stuck and unable to lose anymore i was getting frustrated. I really started studying what MY BODY needed...This book explains EVERYTHING! Thank you!!!
Parque maravilla es que alguien pueda meterse tan profundo a entender las cosas y que las explique tan fácil para ser llevadas a cabo de inmediato, GRACIAS!!
Information sparse. A 3 page summary of the book will convey all the information conveyed in that book. Too much explanation for a relatively straightforward systems take on health and disease

This book is an easy-going, simple to understand and 100% solution to weight loss. Like Dr. Eric says, weight is not a problem. Its a symptom and to fix it, we need to understand the underlying problem.
I started watching Dr. Eric berg's videos on youtube first. They were very interesting. But the challenge is, information is scattered. So, to get a complete view, I picked up the book.
The book lives up to my expectations. it's simple to read and easy to understand. And I have gained new knowledge that i applied to lose almost 15 Kgs.
I would have given this book 5 stars had there not been a lot of repetition of the same point, again and again, in the same chapter, as well as between chapters. It felt annoying at times. But i take it to it that maybe those points need to be emphasized again and again. It's Dr Eric bergs style that I have noticed in his videos as well.
Overall, i enjoyed the book thoroughly and gained knowledge at the same time.
There is good information in the book. However, a lot of it is very repetitive. Also, it is hard to figure out exactly which body type you are objectively. If you cant figure that out then how do you follow the treatments in the book. For instance, if a major factor of weight gain is stress, then you need to excercise and eat differently from the other body types. But how do you know that's really the MAJOR contributing factor for you and not just laziness, overeating, depression, menopause approaching, thyroid, etc without getting your hormone levels tested. So there is all this information but you're not sure which to use. It also leaves a few things out of the book in order to get you to pay for website services.
Interesting take on diets for different body types, otherwise really generic in information.
Eat lots of veggies, preferably raw or steamed, and other vegan options of protein and fat, like nuts and legumes. Go organic whenever possible.
If this diet makes you crave animal protein then eat animal protein in small doses until you are satisfied.
Ta-da!
Don't exercise if you are stressed, as it will put more stress on your body, so body will produce cortisol, which will retain fat.
Dr Berg does suggest artificial sweeteners and frequent snacking, which every other book advises against, so pretty outdated. There is some self promotion in this book, specifically a concentrate of cruciferous vegetables, and he also promotes natural foods. Contradictory.
Eric Berg is my favorite doctor. Even though he's technically a chiropractor, he solves all my problems through a 1-2 minute video on youtube. Any time i apply his advice (which is mainly around eating shit lot of kale :) ) I manage to fix anything that needs fixing. The title of the book is a tad misleading. - this is not a book about losing weight (i have nothing to loose luckily) - it's a book about health . His fan group (by now a few million around the globe) have cured any disease under the sun, have done amazing body transformations and can testify about amazing mental clarity. Take that pill industry!
So easy to understand along with incredible amounts of helpful bits of info that you’d never know and can greatly help you. I learned so much about some of the issues I’m dealing with and I can’t wait to start fixing them them immediately. My supplement orders are placed and I’ll begin when they arrive. I’m a complete adrenal body type. Knowing that now is going to help me so much. I know how to attack the issues after 3 years of trial and error, hoping what I was buying would help. Such a great book and will be an even better reference to look back on as I move forward.
I just recently re-read this book. I’m not sure how much stock to put into the science behind it although when he explains why he believes what he believes, it does follow some logic. I’ve also watched a lot of Dr. Berg’s YouTube videos about healing diseases and metabolic disfunction via a “healthy keto diet.” This book is basically the same thing. I tried ketosis for over a month and it put my limbic system in so much distress and made my health exponentially worse. I know a lot of people have found metabolic healing through his teachings and approach to health/diet. Unfortunately, it’s not for me.
Listening to Dr. Berg's YouTube teaching on nutrition can be habit forming. I just don't seem to retain all that he says in the videos . With this book he goes in depth on nutrition based on body types and health conditions making the KETO diet more personal for each person. He discusses key exercises that can help each body type gain optimum health. If you have sort of tried KETO and weren't happy I suggest you read the book. Thank you, Eric Berg for your research and help for those on the journey to better health.
