From Seanan McGuire's InCryptid series of novels comes the Field Guide! A collection of 44 different critters that appear in the series, from the super intelligent Aeslin Mice to the Waheela to the, uh, Screaming Yam. Each entry has an illustration by Kory Bing and a small blurb by Seanan McGuire.
Hi! I'm Seanan McGuire, author of the Toby Daye series (Rosemary and Rue, A Local Habitation, An Artificial Night, Late Eclipses), as well as a lot of other things. I'm also Mira Grant (www.miragrant.com), author of Feed and Deadline.
Born and raised in Northern California, I fear weather and am remarkably laid-back about rattlesnakes. I watch too many horror movies, read too many comic books, and share my house with two monsters in feline form, Lilly and Alice (Siamese and Maine Coon).
I do not check this inbox. Please don't send me messages through Goodreads; they won't be answered. I don't want to have to delete this account. :(
Since having started the InCryptid series, I've been in love with the idea of a family of scientists (cryptozoologists) gathering as much information about the more incredible lifeforms in our world. Sure, they are also great fighters with lots of abilities whereas I'm more of a bookworm but kicking ass usually is great fun.
The author drew up a field guide that encompasses all the spoiler-free information the Price family has collected and which plays a part in the different novels. In addition, we cat some cute artwork (as far as I know by the author herself). Here are some of my favorite entries:
This also goes to show the versatility of the creatures (and plant life) we get to encounter in the series and it's really cool. Even cooler is how this is written. Not only do we get the detailed information, we get it in the typical humorous Price family way.
Definitely a "book" that should be read only in addition to the short stories and novels, not before (even thought the texts basically are spoiler-free). But for fans, this is a very nice way of diving in a little deeper still.
This is a really fun little add-on to the Incryptid world. I like how much thought Seanan puts into everything because most authors would just like mention a lot of these creatures in passing and give them a few vague characteristics, but she comes up with scientific names and species classifications for all of them and tells you all about their biology and behavior and history and stuff. It's just a lot of fun to read because you can tell she had a lot of fun writing it. And there are some pretty cute illustrations to go along with it. I would love to hug many of these deadly cryptids lol. The only thing that bothered me in this is that some paragraphs were copy-pasted between entries for similar creatures - like the three different types of gorgons - but I guess that's really to be expected with something like this.
Firstly, for anyone looking to read this thing, it seems the edition published by Gumroad no longer exists. I looked. The Price Family Field Guide is now only available on Seanan McGuire's website as a series of individual pages linked by a link-list.
That said, The Price Family Field Guide is a cute little scientific-ish guide to some of the cryptids populating the InCryptid universe. It's both informative and snarky. The illustrations are pretty good. I think the non-humanoid ones were better than the humanoid ones, but that's also just a matter of the art style. There were several points where the descriptions were repeated verbatim. Not a lot, but a bit and I noticed. I think that mainly happened during the biological descriptions and it's not a real issue.
Definitely a nice little guide and addition to the InCryptid universe.
The Price Family Field is exactly what it sounds like, a guide to many of the InCryptids that make their presence known over the course of the series. As such, this novella is really best suited to active fans of the series.
It's also great if you find yourself forgetting which cryptid is which, as that is the purpose of a guide, after all. In total, there are 44 critters covered within these pages, with works illustrated by Kory Bing. The illustrations alone make this a novella worth checking out, as far as I'm concerned. Especially the one of the Aeslin Mice. More, please!
A detailed, beautifully illustrated field guide to known cryptids. It highlights Seanan McGuire's huge imagination and wonderful sense of humour. As I continue reading the InCryptid series, I now have a place to go to see the description of each cryptid. Very handy!!
A ok read found on her homepage, not that into the "scientific and other worlds"-wierd stuff in the series but good illustrations and fun to have some deeper look at some or the creatures appearing
