Once They Moved Like The Wind: Cochise, Geronimo and the Apache Wars
At the end, in the summer of 1886, they numbered thirty-four men, women, and children under the leadership of Geronimo. This small group of Chiricahua Apaches became the last band of free Indians to wage war against the United States Government. The 'renegades', as white men called them, were mercilessly pursued by five thousand American troops (one quarter of the US Army) and by three thousand Mexican soldiers. For more than five months Geronimo's band ran the soldiers ragged. The combined military might of two great nations succeeded in capturing not a single Chiricagua, not even a child.' This is an excellent overview of the Apache wars of the 1870s and 1880s, featuring Cochise, Geronimo, Juh, Victorio, and Nana, the fierce and feared Apache chieftains and leaders, along with the U. S. Army that pursued them. Some detail is also given about Lozen, Victorio's sister who rode and fought as a warrior and who, along with Geronimo, had 'The Power'. It is a fascinating portrait of the end of the Old West.

A very detailed but readable account of the Apache wars. The author must have a done an incredible research job. It's amazing to think Geronimo and his tiny band of just thirty-four including women and children could avoid capture for so long and it took 5,000 US soldiers and a similar number of Mexican troops to finally track them down.
As Buffe Sainte Marie sang in "Now that the buffalo are gone" even when Germany was defeated (in the world wars of the last century) they were allowed to keep their land but not so Native American tribes. The final injustice was to lie to the Apache that they could rejoin their families in exile in Florida only for the men to be kept separate from them for several years and for their children to be sent north away from both parents for schooling. Though since there was great pressure from the settlers in Arizona, who had helped themselves to the Apache's land, to exterminate all of them, it was something of an achievement by the standards of the day that they weren't all executed and those who survived long enough were eventually allowed to settle in Indian territory in modern day Oklahoma.

I love this book because it fulfilled none of my expectations. I thought it would be like every other book on Native American history I've read (see below), but instead it was nuanced, balanced, well-researched, and well sourced. It was also a very accessible read.
I love history, but I am really uncomfortable with cultural appropriation. I feel like there's this colonial/ white-guilt tendency to see certain historical or visual or religions aspects of other cultures through this sort of rose-colored lens, and the result is a lot of white people (whose ancestors more than likely perpetuated in human rights abuses, at the worst, or cultural erasure, at best) who like to romanticize or make playthings of cultures that have historically been oppressed by white people.
This really bothers me. I feel like first off, no person or culture is wholly good or wholly evil. Every person (and culture) has awesome, admirable aspects and disturbing, horrific aspects to them. To romanticize and diminish the impact of any aspect of what makes a person a person -- or a culture a culture -- is to participate in a sort of modern form of erasure, distilling a complex history down into a one-dimensional mythology.
Second, I feel like the tendency of white people to adopt the religious and visual aspects of cultures that have been historically repressed by them (and to romanticize the history of these cultures) comes out of a sort of self-flagellating repentance focused more on apologizing/ defending the past than on addressing/preventing similar behavior in the present and future. I think that white people are denying the dark and painful parts of their own ancestral history and turning to other cultures, but in doing so are choosing to strip out the dark and painful of those histories in order to justify turning their back on their own ancestry.
What this all comes down to is that I have tended to avoid reading histories of Native American tribes in the U.S. The histories I was provided in my youth via public education really bothered me, because they all followed the same dual theme. The overlying theme was that what pioneers did to the Native Americans was an awful historical travesty that should never be repeated. The underlying theme was that this travesty of human nature was unfortunately necessary because the Indians would not let the settlers live in peace and kept attacking these poor white women and children. As I entered my teens, a third narrative began to occasionally show up, woven into these other two narratives -- this narrative was that the local Native American tribes had been peaceful, intelligent people who lived in a state of communion with nature and had a natural ken of the world which exceeded white knowledge.
Each of these narratives -- whether together or apart -- are short-sighted and limiting. They present one-dimensional views of a "savage", "natural" people whose fall, in the face of advancing industrialization via white settlers, was "inevitable". Always, the Native American communities are spoken of in the past tense, as people that were, historical issues, and long-past battles.
There was no discussion in those books of how the past effects the current situation of Native Americans. There was no discussion of modern tribal issues, or the legalities constructing things like, what determines a tribe, or what rights a sovereign nation has, or how are tribal funds managed today?
After a while, I got tired of the brief, one-dimensional "histories," with narratives like, "Once [TRIBE] lived freely on this land and lived in peace with the salmon and the otter. Then the white settlers came and encroached on [TRIBES] sacred lands. [TRIBE] went to meet with the leaders of the settlers to ask them to stop, but there was a misunderstanding that led to a massacre, and after several skirmishes the U.S. government put [TRIBE] onto a reservation for their own safety and the safety of the settlers."
That's so reductive and dismissive and useless. It doesn't go into the human element of it at all, let alone the legal, social, and political conversations that influenced said human elements. It doesn't discuss resistances or broken treaties or acts of outrage or rebellion. It's just ... surface, written from the distance of history and the lens of the privileged party.
"Once They Moved Like the Wind" sidesteps that lack of nuance to provide a fully-realized and complex snapshot of an historical moment, where the mistakes and heroisms of all parties are examined honestly.

An excellent, well researched, well presented book detailing the plight of the Apache people. It tells of atrocities committed by Apache, Mexican and White American, but the Native American was always regarded as the primary instigator. It also reveals the lies, betrayal, deceit, and treachery committed in attempting to purge the west of the Apache people.
The ability of the Apache to evade their hunters for so long was astounding, a mark of their ingenuity, perseverance and determination to survive. If you're interested in the history of the Native American, especially the Apache people, I would heartily recommend this book.

Movingly written, a testament to the misunderstandings that resulted in the brutal Apache wars. The Apache leaders were remarkable and well-drawn. Fascinating how they had to deal with good policy/bad policy from the Americans and how that could change in a moment. A good read if you want to understand the times.

This is a well-written book and a "collective biography," full of little-known nuggets like this one about "Nana's Raid" in 1881:
"Of all the extraordinary deeds of war ever performed by the Chiricahuas, this was arguably the most brilliant. The summary statistics only hint at the intensity and perfection of Nana's wild campaign. In two months, the chief and some fifteen warriors rode three thousand miles -- an average of fifty miles a day. They fought seven serious battles with cavalry, winning every one, and attacked more than a dozen towns and ranches. With one thousand soldiers and another three to four hundred civilians chasing them, the warriors escaped every trap. During those two months they killed at least thirty-five of their enemy, wounded many more, and captured more than two hundred horses and mules. Their own casualties are uncertain, but not a single dead or wounded Apache was found by any of the pursuing horde. All this, with a relative handful of warriors under the leadership of a lame-footed chief some seventy-five years old!"

David Roberts admires the Apaches, especially their chiefs, Cochise and Geronimo--but especially the wily and courageous Cochise. His book is a valuable document for anyone interested in Southwest history, since he gives a detailed overview of Apache activities and the Apache Wars during the 19th century. My only reservation is that Roberts is too favorable, although he also describes Apache atrocities. I learned a lot from him, and you can, too!

Awesome book. Tells the story of the Apache wars and the waning days of their society, including specifics on Cochise, Geronimo, and Victorio.
Cochise and Geronimo were Chiricahua Apache and it was interesting how the American Cavalry were never able to capture a single Chiricahua without the help of other Apache tribe members.

If you feel like torturing yourself reading a beautifully written story about the end days of Apache civilization then this is the book for you! Absolutely unforgettable characters throughout this book.

A wonderfully detailed book that chronicles the attrocities and stories of all sides involved in the Apache Wars...
I have no doubt that there is a bias in this book and that Roberts looks more favourably upon the Native Americans, yet this does not detract from the tale at all.

What an incredible book. Roberts presents a well-researched, eloquent, and realistic depiction of Cochise, Geronimo, and the Apache Wars in what is now Arizona, New Mexico, and Northern Mexico.
Without glorifying or minimizing either side, Roberts skillfully recounts the outright deceit and atrocities perpetrated upon the Apaches and other tribes by the U.S. Army, and the Apaches' mind-boggling response - perhaps the most incredible guerrilla war campaign ever waged by a small group of warriors against impossible odds, answering the "White Eyes'" lies and traps with ferocious and cruel resistance.
Roberts also gives credit to the military leaders who worked to end these wars while exposing the duplicity and incompetence of men like Nelson Miles and Bascom who, with their lies and self-promotion, bungled relationships with the Apaches countless times in the late 1800s and caused the deaths of hundreds (thousands) of men, women, and children on both sides of the conflict.
As a Canadian living on Treaty Six territory, this book also made me think about our treatment of the Cree, Dene, and Metis here on the prairies for the last 200 years. It made me laugh to think that any white person could deny we are living on stolen land, and that we prefer to avoid the gaze of history and distance ourselves from the perpetrators of these crimes in Canada so we can enjoy their benefits without guilt.
Roberts does not discuss Manifest Destiny or much of the political background to the zeitgeist, preferring to focus on the wars themselves. However, this book should be paired with others to properly understand the mentality of settlers and Apaches in the 1800s.
This book is fantastic. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in history, or in human achievement and physicality.

For those of us living in Arizona, New Mexico, or Northern Mexico, it is hard to imagine that the Apache Wars ended only 140 years ago, barely three generations in the past. The Apache Wars were the culmination of decades of deceit, depredations, robbery, enslavement, and deadly violence perpetrated first of all by white encroachers on various Native American tribes, and secondarily by the more aggressive tribes who fought back in kind. White Americans almost succeeded in their goal to exterminate the Apache in an epic struggle that is vividly described by Roberts who strives to present the painful truth that few Americans have encountered. The book is a great read.
The racism of the Caucasians was at the root of a conflict that ended in the treatment of the conquered that was not only inhumane but also irrational. In addition, the “widespread graft of traders and reservation agents” turned inter-ethnic relations into powder kegs. The Whites betrayed treaties, broke their promises, and forced the removal of tribes from their ancestral lands which in many cases to this day remain uninhabited by anyone. If only….
Many tribes meekly submitted to atrocities, injustice, and humiliation. The Apache were among those who did not submit, but responded violently, as their traditions demanded. These responses fed into the racist conclusions of the Whites that “the only good Indian is a dead Indian” and their goal to make all Indians “good Indians.” As a result, even well-intentioned attempts to make peace ended in failure. Vincent Colyer, Secretary of the Board of Peace Commissioners, a government agency in Washington, shed tears to learn about whites massacring Tribals, and to hear testimonies like this one from a Tonto chief in a meeting that took place a few miles from my home in Arizona:
“We are tired of living in caves and on the tops of cold mountains. My women carry water two or three miles, from the little streams. They get water at night, because we are afraid of soldiers. Even rabbits are safer than my Tontos. We hide our children behind big rocks when we go to hunt the deer. But deer are not so many now. You say Tontos must not steal cattle, but we must steal or starve. White Americans have stolen our cornfields and our wheat fields. What are we do to?”
Roberts’ book is no apology for the murderous Apache. Yet he concludes in an Epilogue: “It seems unfathomable that white Americans could have found no way to coexist, in all the empty magnificence of the Southwest, with a mere twelve hundred Chiricahua – roughly the population today of such wayside Arizona hamlets as Pima or Morenci. The heartland of the Apache, upon which even the caravans of modern tourism have left little mark, pulses with the absence of the people who knew and used that wilderness best.” The Apache repeatedly expressed their desire to live peaceably in such places as Turkey Creek. White Americans would not have it. As a result, thousands of innocents on both sides died violent deaths.
Two side notes:
1. A few white Americans (such as Colyer) did their best to represent the Apache, to right the injustices, and to settle the conflict without violence. Some were evangelical Christians. Almost all of them were scorned, mocked and accused of naivete by the majority settlers in Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico.
2. Roberts’ description of the episode that led to Geronimo’s ultimate defeat and imprisonment inexplicably omits the descriptions in Leonard Wood’s extensive eye-witness diary of those events. This causes me to wonder if Roberts’ personal prejudgments are also giving us a distorted picture of what happened.

Two side notes:
1. A few white Americans (such as Colyer) did their best to represent the Apache, to right the injustices, and to settle the conflict without violence. Some were evangelical Christians. Almost all of them were scorned, mocked and accused of naivete by the majority settlers in Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico.
2. Roberts’ description of the episode that led to Geronimo’s ultimate defeat and imprisonment inexplicably omits the descriptions in Leonard Wood’s extensive eye-witness diary of those events. This causes me to wonder if Roberts’ personal prejudgments are also giving us a distorted picture of what happened.

David Roberts provides a much more balanced book about the Apache Wars between the Apache and the U.S. Army. He speaks to the survival of the Apache by following Geronimo and Cochise as the might of the army is massed against them. A great reminder of what the colonists did in trying to eradicate the native population here to those of us who have studied this part of history and a possible awakening to those who have not.

I started reading this and it was interesting, but I put it down to read something else and have not gotten back to it, so am filing as 'never finished.' With my Native American heritage, I am interested in the history but also find it hard to read because the ending is always like the Alamo. We know what happened to this race of people and it is hard to swallow.

Absolutely interesting read about the Apache Wars.... written very objectively and shows the heartbreaking misunderstandings that led to much bloodshed and eventually erased a very interesting way of life and survival in the vast deserts and mountains of the Southwest.

This post is to help further expand on the previous post left only a few days past on Chuck Missler' Daniel' 70 Weeks: Profile of Prophecy book found on this forum, concerning what I most humbly, but firmly&honestly, believe to be a pending world changing event similar to that of New York' 9-11 (20yrs today).
As I was on my way to see my son earlier this morning on the train, I felt 'compelled' to get out my phone and start messing with a few figures in my head concerning the date 11th September 2001 to exactly 20yrs later ie today, 0nly adding an extra week ie 7 days and another 5 days due to the extra five leap year days that had elapsed in those 20yrs, bringing us up to the date 18-9-2021 (I week today away).
This left me with the figure 7312 days, I then x this figure by 911 (taken from 9-11 or September the 11th) and the number sequence 6661232 was given to me.
Now, the 7312 adds up to 13, a very Satanic number in itself, but the 666 and 232 sequences are very, very significant, as you have the mark of the beast firstly and then the No:23 both straight&reversed, which is 'the' most Satanic number in reference to Satan and in identifying his deceit&falsehoods.
I am absolutely convinced that there 'will' be a world changing event take place similar to that fateful day 20yrs ago (today). I believe London will be the target due to it being the centre of the world's financial dealings, just as the Vatican in Rome is the centre for the world's most popular Western religious system ie the Roman Catholic Church, and then we have Washington DC (District of Columbia) the centre of the world's most powerful military&political system (currently).
ALL, and I mean ALL of these 3 seperate entities have absolutely 'nothing' to do with the respective countries they are located within.......they are 'all' seperate entities, privately owned and totally independent and self governing, it just 'appears' to be operating as per the norm to the un-learned&ignorant lay-person ie the average man on the street, when the reality is is they are owned&governed by our worlds ruling elite (monarchies, the super rich and those who practice witchcraft ie Freemasons (top level 32&33 degree level Freemasons, self-serving rotters all) and their ilk.
So, London is the 'obvious' target here due to the fact that this target is the surest&quickest way to bring about a 'one world order', by ruining the world's strongest currency and financial HQ ie the dollar and the City of London.

There have been many large looking stars ie planets in our night skies since the beginning of the scamdemic. It is possible to count the points with the naked eye and I, myself, have observed them to be liken upside-down Pentagrams, with 2 points up and 3 points down (No:23).
The planets Jupiter, Saturn and Venus have been the most prominent as far as I can tell and 'all' are a direct reference to Lucifer, who is also Satan the devil.

I will attempt to demonstrate that not only does the Biblical number 666 play a significant part in identifying Satan&Co's works&tactics, but also the numbers 963, 911, 69, 36 and most especially that of No:23 (which is also number 32 reversed, as Satan the devil likes to do things 'his way' by reversing&inverting).
For those believers in the Faith that don't believe numbers play a major role in both Lord God' and Satan the devils plans, then please take a look at the work of Ivan Panin, Chuck Missler, Al Neal and others, who have 'all' emphatically proven One Divine Source that inspired our Holy Bible, having the effect of turning many 'scientific' minds into bona fide believers in the Faith.
Satan the devil has been proven to always copy ie 'mock' Almighty God' work with inferior versions of his own making, in this case 'esoteric' codes, known as mysticism ie witchcraft to you&me.

I have waited patiently on Lord God to be shown the relevance of the date 19-08-2021, but was instead led to this verse;

There have been many large looking stars ie planets in our night skies since the beginning of the scamdemic. It is possible to count the points with the naked eye and I, myself, have observed them to be liken upside-down Pentagrams, with 2 points up and 3 points down (No:23).
The planets Jupiter, Saturn and Venus have been the most prominent as far as I can tell and 'all' are a direct reference to Lucifer, who is also Satan the devil.
It is still my 'firm' belief that London will be a target sometime in the not so distant future. But 'when' this will be remains to be seen, but I feel the all evidence when looked at thoroughly points to this event happening 'sooner' rather than later (we shall have to wait and see Isaiah 55:8-9).

The number 15 is a very esoteric number and is in fact a direct reference to none other than Satan the devil himself.
Please refer to what is called 'Solomon' Square' a series of numbers 1 to 9 presented thus in three rows; 492 (top) 357 (middle) 816 (bottom).
The significance of this very esoteric arrangement is that one comes to the number 15 both vertically, horizontally and diagonally.
The five pointed star ie Pentagram, also adds to this number 15 when the points are numbered thus, 1+2+3+4+5=15.
The 15 is really 69, also adding up to 15, and if one to research Solomon and the Pentagram, along with David Bowie and his last abum Blackstar, it can be 'clearly' seen the number 15 is indeed a reference to the number 69, which is in reference to 'dualism' ie hermeticism, the ideology of 'as above, so below, back and white, good and evil etc and so forth.
Hermeticism is Baphomet worship, who is both male and female and is also Satan the devil.
I have already taken the liberty of seeing how the dates of these 3 individuals compare to the dates of 11-09-2001 and those of 07-07-2007, along with the dates of the North American eclipses of 2017 and those yet to come in 2023 and 2024, which I believe are very significant events (we shall see) and the results are very intriguing in my honest opinion, as testing these figures up against other notable individuals highlighted here did not register the same rather obvious tell-tale esoteric tags/marks.
Other significant days to bear in mind are the 116th (911) day of the year, as is the 203rd day and the 6x6x6th day, the 4th August, Obama' Birthdate.
I am not 100% sure why these numbers are so relevant to Satan the devil or indeed to Lord God, but I would strongly advise anyone of 'looking' ie researching said esoteric content to do just that ie 'look only' as to practice the dark arts would be going against the Lord your God and His Command in Deuteronomy 18:10-12.

Even now at the COP26 event in Glasgow are they contriving to hoodwink and pull the whool over the eyes of the world with the heinous hoax of 'climate change' which used to be called global warming, (which is at least a more accurate description).

The problem I have with this channel is the rather obvious disinformation, or rather lack of any meaningful info, which I believe is purposefully left-out and omitted, giving the seeker of Truth a potentially very biased outlook.
These obvious omissions include no exposure on the Rothschild's, world Monarchies and ruling elite and freemasonry and their ilk, who are the real power in our world today.
The blatant promotion of UFO' and aliens and fake space, all of which can be disproved by the determined seeker of Truth.
IF Truth be their main objective and they are capable of looking at the evidence from an unbiased and objective stand-point, and are not 'ashamed' to voice their findings publicly, at any given opportunity, even if this means being potentially ridiculed and shunned by their peers, then like-as-not they will have a better time of it than most (Corinthians 1:27).
Note: if Satan the devil covets the alien deception along with fake space, then you can bet it is of great significance indeed, otherwise 'why' promote it so vigorously?

The stories painted here are heart breaking and frustrating. Written in a linear sense, each chapter a snapshot of a person or issue of Arizona's Apaches of the late 1800s, often characters and events overlap, so I find myself re-reading and referencing previous chapters so that the larger picture stays in my mind's eye. Most of these historical figures are painted with a complex precision that further exposes the multi-layered problems facing both the Apaches and the White Eyes. I was appalled when Bascom decided to see dishonesty in Cochise, to choose to make the war personal rather than to proceed with fairness and justice. I cheered at Nana's Raid and was disappointed when Geronimo left Turkey Creek. Would the massacre of Victorio and 400 Chirachaua at Tres Castillos have happened had Lozen been there with her Powers? Could no US President follow the sympathies of Grant? Could the American Government never keep a single promise or treaty signed with The People?
The author notes several obscure Anglos whose firsthand stories of the the Chiricahua were never recorded, unique perspectives lost to time. One of them a translator, some of them white children taken by the Apaches and raised for short period of time.
The history contained within these pages is priceless. Throughout my time with this book, the stories have sat with me and I have reflected internally and shared what I have learned with many people. As Geronimo said over and over to the White Eyes: "There is one God looking down on us all. We are all children of the one God. God is listening to me. The sun, the darkness, the winds, are all listening to what we now say."

Another excellent one by Roberts. I think I've now read all his books on American Indians.
Roberts meticulously details Apache history in the Southwest, including details of a south-central New Mexico heartland area that had me, who grew up in New Mexico, still learning some things.
He also knows his geography of the NM Bootheel, SE Arizona, NE Sonora and NW Chihuahua, and Mexican battles with the Apaches, too.
A bonus is that Roberts has a sympathetic take on the Apaches but one that does NOT romanticize them, either. Where they were cruel, he notes it. To the degree that cruelty existed before their major battles with either the Mexican or US governments, he notes that, too.
He also, briefly but succinctly, exposes Nelson Miles' fraudulency at the end of the Apache Wars, part of him being the most overpromoted general in US history between Little Mac McClellan and Dugout Doug MacArthur.

Densely packed with well-researched facts although without an understanding of the territory involved and the parallel histories of the white man and the Mexicans, much of it remains a mystery to me. Geronimo's life story is tragic and serves as a salutary reminder of man's inhumanity to men, women and children. Hard to understand how people who loved their family members as much as people do now, so freely engaged in barbaric slaughter and degradation of other humans. Would love to have learned more of Lozen; and to have heard the voices of the women and children so invisible in the nineteenth century. Parallels with Dalrymple's history of the colonisation of India/Bangladesh and the mass killing Europeans enjoyed there - also for domination and wealth creation. More evidence of the wickedness of self-proclaimed Christians and proof there is no deity. Hard read and too dull to recommend.

Con voluntad de ser el libro definitivo sobre las Guerras apaches ,esta crónica de la lucha de los indios americanos más celebres de la historia es demasiado larga, reiterativa. Incurre en fallos de apreciación y juicios de valores a los que estamos demasiado acostumbrados por parte de los autores anglosajones. Aparece la figura del del sempiterno noble salvaje y una compresión justificadora tan recurrentes para los pobres de recursos y hambrientos de público fácil como superados. Resulta interesante por lo que describe, en especial por su investigación antropológica pero no por cómo lo explica. Habrá que leer fuentes y versiones mexicanas para hacernos una idea de lo sucedido con estos ahora ídolos estadounidenses.

Once They Moved Like the Wind: Cochise, Geronimo, and the Apache Wars by David Roberts (Simon & Shuster 1993) (973.04972). This book provides fascinating insight into a strange period in US military history. It focuses upon the late 1880's, when for the last time the United States Army waged war against paleolithic tribespeople for control of the Western US. By the time Geronimo, a Bedonkohe Apache, surrendered to the United States for the fourth time, his band of followers was down to a total of thirty-four Chiricahua Apache warriors, women, and children. My rating: 7/10, finished 12/14/18.

The Apache, of which Cochise and Geronimo were members, were the final holdouts in surrendering to the US Army in the 1890’s. Geronimo escaped multiple times and led the soldiers on a chase covering New Mexico, Arizona, and several states within Mexico itself. He was right to distrust the military, as they continually lied to the Indians, even as they shuffled them off to reservations on poor quality land in Oklahoma and Florida. The damage done to their children by sending them to Indian boarding schools reverberated for generations. It is amazing that any of them survived to the present day.

This book provided so much necessary perspective to the confusing nature of the Apache Wars. Roberts did an amazing job describing the events of these battles and providing sympathetic accounts of both sides. His exploration of Apache culture and in-depth biographies of figures like Cochise, Geronimo and Victorio are exceptional and eye-opening. Furthermore, figures like George Crook and Tom Jeffords are explored and given a depth of character that other sources might fail to convey.
This book has given me a new appreciation for the state that I call home, and I can't wait to read more of Roberts's work.

Excellent history of the Apache Wars. Although the title refers to just two Apache leaders, the author relates just as much information about other Apache warriors/leaders and the white armies (Texan, Mexican, US Army, and Confederates) that came close to destroying the tribes of the southwest US. Not as amazingly fabulous as Empire Of The Summer Moon (Gwynne's book about the Comanches), but a fascinating read nonetheless.

I loved learning more about the Apache Indians. This is written in such a story like manner it was easy to get through even though it was long! The female warrior story was my favorite! She disappears after a raid. They don't see her for months. Meanwhile she helps a pregnant woman escape, they hide out in a cave, she delivers her baby, and then she comes back to camp like no big deal! All in a days work!

This book was mentioned in Michael Blake's book Indian Yell. Blake was the author of Dances With Wolves. Indian Yell was excellent and so was this book. It is all about the Apache of Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico and their battles with the American army. Depressing, but an amazing insight into the life of an American Indian in the late nineteenth century.
