Le Sommeil du monstre #1

Rate this book

Enki Bilal

Enki Bilal (born Enes Bilal) is a French comic book creator and film director.

Bilal was born in Belgrade, then the capital of Yugoslavia, to a Czech mother, Ana, who came to Belgrade as child from Karlovy Vary, and a Bosnian Muslim father, Muhamed Hamo Bilal who had been Josip Broz Tito's tailor. When he was five years old, his father managed to take a trip and stay in Paris as a political émigré. Enki and the rest of the family followed him, four years later.

Enki Bilal has no sense of belonging to any ethnic group and religion, nor is he obsessed with soil and roots. He said in one interview: "I also feel Bosnian by my father's origin, a Serb by my place of birth and a Croat by my relationship with a certain friends, not to mention my other Czech half, who I am inherited from mother".

At age 14, he met René Goscinny and with his encouragement applied his talent to comics. He produced work for Goscinny's Franco-Belgian comics magazine Pilote in the 1970s, publishing his first story, Le Bol Maudit, in 1972.

In 1975, Bilal began working with script writer Pierre Christin on a series of dark and surreal tales, resulting in the body of work titled Légendes d'Aujourd'hui.

He is best known for the Nikopol trilogy (La Foire aux immortels, La Femme piège and Froid Équateur), which took more than a decade to complete. Bilal wrote the script and did the artwork. The final chapter, Froid Équateur, was chosen book of the year by the magazine Lire and is acknowledged by the inventor of chess boxing as the inspiration for the sport.

Quatre? (2007), the last book in the Hatzfeld tetralogy, deals with the breakup of Yugoslavia from a future viewpoint. The first installment came in 1998 in the shape of Le Sommeil du Monstre opening with the main character, Nike, remembering the war in a series of traumatic flashbacks.

In 2012, Bilal was featured in a solo exhibition at The Louvre. The exhibition, titled "The Ghosts of the Louvre", ran from 20 December 2012 to 18 March 2013. The exhibition was organized by Fabrice Douar, and featured a series of paintings of "Ghosts", done atop photographs that Bilal took of the Louvre's collection.

Goodreads obavezno treba uvesti i to pola zvjezdice!

Kako sam Nikopolu dao 3, ovome onda ide 2.

Le Sommeil Du Monstre (titled The Dormant Beast in its English translation) is the opening act of author Enki Bilal's most recent epic, "Le Monstre" (or, in English, The Beast). Despite being the start of a story, Le Sommeil Du Monstre is a remarkable piece of fiction that stands alone, mixing Bilal's most experimental style to date with several challenging storytelling techniques. The result is a stunning narrative tapestry.

The story focuses on three protagonists (Nike, Amir, and Leyla), all orphans of the war in Yugoslavia. Of the three, Nike is the predominant protagonist, and is gifted with a remarkable memory that is not only perfect, but that he is in the process of "rebuilding" back to the day of his birth. Nike (the savant), Leyla (the scientist), and Amir (the mercenary), living independent lives, are drawn into a conspiratorial conflict against the Obscurantis Order, an obfuscated monotheist cult built using strange technologies by Optus Warhole, an enigmatic, Luciferian villain.

The brilliance of Le Sommeil Du Monstre is not only in its exploration of themes of religion, science, identity, and memory, or its successful juggling of three parallel story lines. The central scaffolding of the story are Nike's memories, which (despite being rebuild in reverse chronological order) offer important thematic parallels to the story. This, combined with a surreal, visceral artistic style (reminiscent of the work of Francis Bacon), is powerful and evocative.

Without question, Le Sommeil Du Monstre is a difficult. Made even more complicated is the subtle interplay of language that is lost in translation (Nike, for example, was raised in America, and his imperfect understanding of French emerge when he becomes angry). It is a story with many layers, and readers are likely to find getting to the bottom of them a challenge. In my opinion, this mature piece of literature is Bilal's best work to date, and challenges even the stuffiest literary critic not to be astonished by its storytelling and its symbolism.

Funny how things come around. I found Bilal through Heavy Metal in the 80s, which I really got into via Blade Runner & its impact on science-fiction of the period. I was immediately drawn by his stunning art, gritty style, and bizarre melding of mythology with science fiction in the Nikopol stories. Anyway, a year before THIS book came out, The Fifth Element was released and owed a clear debt to comic sci-fi as evidenced in Heavy Metal magazine, particularly in the 80s & 90s. Then comes this book. With its aerial taxis, doomsday scenario, church interference and shocking-red-haired leading lady, it owes more than a little right back to The Fifth Element. However, I don't think this sucks as much as I did ...Element.
The writing, by Bilal himself, is typical of him, as is some of the imagery. His art has taken a slight stylistic turn in this book, and the colours and penwork are much looser and sketchier than he has tended toward in other previous work.
This is Heavy-Metal-esque sci-fi and make no mistake. Not usually my cup of tea (in spite of all I said above), but an interesting read. Now I have to track down the sequels!

Intelektualan roman upakovan u nestvarno efektne vizuelne efekte.

I read this in paperback, in English, but couldn't find that edition on here. I'm not sure if it is the print size, the font, or my old eyes, but chunks of this were nearly impossible for me to read. I also clearly don't have enough understanding of the breakup of Yugoslavia to catch what I'm sure are a lot of specific references. So, I guess I'll just go with "I don't get it."
That said, it is gorgeously (and hideously) illustrated, as one would expect from Enki Bilal. I remember his work from sneaking my brother's Heavy Metal once upon a time, and it still hits. Even when I don't understand what's going on, it's really something to look at. There's a vibe, for sure. Bilal, Moebius, and Juan Gimenez were all key figures in the Euro-comics I always found so captivating. Each of them did a lot of work on Cyberpunk/Sci-Fi cityscapes, flying cars and whatnot. Each very, very different styles. Great stuff. Bilal's is perhaps the most bleak. I don't want to say ugly. More beauty in the grotesque.

Çizgiromanlarda kaligrafi yerine dijital fontlar kullanılması her zaman çok ruhsuz gelmiştir. Elle kare kare çizilmiş görsellerin etkisi yok olur.

Üzerine Marmara Çizgi'nin belki hiç redaksiyon yapmadan kitabı basması, girişte genel koordinatör Mehmet Gözüpek'in yazısıyla başlayan korkunç yazım ve noktalama hataları, çevirinin olmamışlığı gibi şeyler de eklenince, Enki Bilal'in bu çalışmasına yazık edilmiş.

[magnificently combining recent Balcan events and dystopia with marvellous illustrations of unparalleled beauty, Enki Bilal takes us on a journey to 2023.

Nike, Leyla and Amir - three orphans of life, torn apart by time and distance - unknowingly search for each other. connected from the moment they were each born, three souls look for that deeply desired instant—the one when recognition happens and pain stops—in a world of half-truths, fake people and religious zealotry, where corruption rules and annihilates the individual.

like an old fine wine, this first volume in the Hatzfeld Tetralogy should be slowly savoured—time and time again.]
