In this latest addition to the hugely successful CAN YOU SEE WHAT I SEE? series, acclaimed photographer Walter Wick welcomes readers out for some spooky search-and-find fun! Co-creator of the popular I SPY series, Walter Wick is at it again. Mr. Wick dazzles the senses with spooky scenes that achieve new levels of aesthetic excellence! This book offers readers lots of search and find fun as they peer through pages and pages of brilliant photographic compositions looking for fascinating toys and objects. This highly collectable book is a must.
Walter Wick is an American artist and photographer best known for the elaborate images in two series of picture book activities for young children, I Spy and Can You See What I See?, both published by Scholastic.
This isn't as easy as it looks! But, I had a blast reading this with my son and searching for the items in the pictures. The illustrations are wonderfully detailed and perfectly spooky. My son and I have decided we need to get more of these books.
This book has become a timeless favorite for my daughter and I. We look through it very often, each time trying to remember where the objects are. We're always in for a surprise, too, as there are still a few we have yet to find, after several times searching
Walter Wick does it again. This book is filled to the brim with magic and detail that makes it so special. You are taken on a journey from page one like all the best of the I Spy and Can You See What I See? books do. Starting in a spooky town and going deeper and deeper into its secrets. A real gift in my free time among a semi stressful last year of university!
This is not just for kids. I even used a magnifying glass on a few of the pages and still couldn't find everything! I thoroughly enjoyed the whimsical spooky images and the challenge of trying to find all the hidden items listed in the accompanying rhymes. Kudos to everyone involved with the creation of this book!
Great illustrations, but rather hard to find some things. I read it in French as Vois-tu ce que je vois? Le chateau hante', but that edition is not on Goodreads.
I love me some spooky stuff and this book has some of the best looking scenes in any I Spy/Can You See What I See?. That moon scene though......really don't wanna talk about it lol
This book contains 23 pages of great picture puzzles, and items to find and solve. The books in this series are a family favorite. My children love looking through the pictures and finding the items in question, or solving the puzzles. Wick, the co-creator of the I Spy books, has a knack for visual narrative. In this book, he retells the tale of In A Dark Dark Wood, across 12 picture narratives with one picture zoomed into 8 times its original size for details. He begins with a castle on a hill and proceeds until we are through the castle and in a potion bottle. The dark imagery is fun to explore with children and is a book they will go back to again and again. The progression in this story is: On A Scary Scary Night Beneath A Scary Scary Moon In A Scary Scary Town On A Scary Scary Street Atop a Scary Scary Hill In A Scary Scary Castle Up Scary Scary Stairs In A Scary Scary Tower In A Scary Scary Cupborard On A Scary Scary Shelf In A Scary Scary Bottle There Was A Ghost! This book is full of amazing illustrations and story, tying them together, sure to entertain the young and young at heart.

Can you see what I see? A scary skull, a moon, and stairs- there's spooky fun for one who dares!
My favorite pages are.... On A scary scary night and in a scary scary castle. I loved the book because you can find really cool, creepy things. The reason I find this book so interesting for all ages though, is that the author makes his own models of the pictures, movie sets actually. If you look closely at each and every page, you will see so many little details on every inch of the book. Takes a look below at an example of just what Walter Wick goes through just to make his books extra special for us, so it looks really 3-D. LOOK...
And on the back of the book you can see other books like Dream Machine, Cool Collections, Night Before Christmas And Once Upon a time. those are some can you see what I see books and there A lot of fun too!!
Walter Wick, the photographer and illustrator of the I Spy Games has his own series of books out now. One that caught our eye at the library was On a Scary Scary Night.
The book tells the story of a trip through a haunted town at night. Each illustration is one stop on the trip and full of often times difficult I Spy like games. Sean and I found the puzzles in thin book much harder than anything we ever faced in an I Spy book.
That said the illustrations out do the I Spy ones. I think when Sean is a little older and has more patience for a tough puzzle book we will go back and try this book again.
A really great book. Definitely a 5 star. It is fun for all ages, children and adults alike, engaging and challenges the brain. The pictures are well drawn and it is a real challenge to find certain objects, you can be looking for hours on end with this book. Plus the Halloween/Haunted House theme adds even more allure to the book. I am sure children love these types of books, and because it rhymes they can practice hard-to pronounce vocabulary in the book at early age. And let's face it , when books are appealing, learning is not boring!
Wick Walter was having an art display at the BYU art museum in the summer of 2009. I took my kids there to show them his work and my middle child was fascinated with the pictures and mock ups. So we got him this book for his birthday. He loved it! Even though I am an adult, I too enjoyed going through looking for hidden objects.
One of the titles in the hardest to solve of Wick's seek and find series. Rhyming text reads like a bulleted list of item to search for, this time without any picture clues to aid readers.
Delightfully spooky and such a fun Halloween treat to give as a gift!
An author's note reveals the inspiration for this title is In a Dark, Dark Wood. Grades 3-5.
I love these search books. They could keep me entertained for hours. I think these would be great to have in the classroom for children to look at. I like how there is a story line in the book as they go through the village to the castle. It isn't just a search book but there is some story line in there.
Oh this is my most favorite children's book as of right now. I want to get all of his books after going through this one with the kids. I normally hate search and find books, but this one is so different and Magical I just fell in love. Everyone who reads it will be a fan...
This is not your typical book to read to children, but definitely fun. Each page has pictures of spooky halloween scenes, and kids have to find a list of items on the page within the picture. Some are easy, and some I had trouble working out, but a book kids would enjoy.
This is a very cool hidden picture book geared to Halloween. I know a little 3-year old girl who loves to find the hidden pictures in her High Five magazine, but this might be a little too scary for her yet. Maybe in a few years.
Love this book! We have checked it out from the library over and over again. The pictures are a perfect haunted house (without being too terrifying), we never tire of looking for the hidden objects, and the rhymes for each scene are great for inspiring young readers.
Beautiful illustrations and nice rhymes. I bought it mostly for the pretty pictures, but I got into the search game and found it fun to play. Some of those items were really hard to find!
