Gary Vaynerchuk's 101 Wines

Rate this book
Millions have logged onto Gary Vaynerchuk's Wine Library TV ―watching him boldly and unconventionally rate hundreds of wines. Viewers are attracted to his youthful energy, unique voice, and often outrageous descriptions. Now, in Gary Vaynerchuk's 101 Wines , Vaynerchuk reveals his first ranked list of the most exciting and tantalizing spirits he has sampled while traveling the globe.
Deeming himself "the wine guy for the average Joe," Vaynerchuk avoids the pomposity of traditional educators. Unlike wine guides that lack animation and lecture rather than inspire, 101 Wines shows you how to develop the necessary go-drink-wine attitude. Vaynerchuk encourages you to trust your own palate―stressing that your love of a certain wine makes it good regardless of what the experts or the price on the bottle say.
Vaynerchuk's recommendations span a wide range of prices, nations, grapes, and styles―allowing everyone from novices to connoisseurs to expand their wine horizons. Unlock the secret to why Vaynerchuk labels wines "From Ruins to Riches," "Red with Fish," and "Not Your Father's Spumante." Discover wines that taste like ones 10 times their price. Read as Vaynerchuk illuminates his top choices with vivid terminology such as "Bring the Thunder" and "Riding the Rainbow." Demystify conventions that once limited your wine-tasting desires. Journey through wine styles and break down barriers with his technical notes and stories behind the vintage. Smile as you realize you too can become a wine aficionado.
With your newfound knowledge, you will out-entertain and enlighten your friends, host extraordinary parties and treat your taste buds to an exhilarating ride. So if you are ready to become a "Vayniac"―one devoted to selecting wines based on Vaynerchuk's innovative principles―grab that corkscrew because a wine sampling adventure like no other awaits.

Gary Vaynerchuk is the ultimate businessman. Born with an entrepreneurial spirit, Gary is a proven investor and advisor in the world of startups, and now an expert on the Fortune 500 world, through is work as CEO of Vaynermedia, a social media marketing agency. Having two bestsellers under his belt doesn't hurt either.

Thirty-three years ago, Gary got his start in business by ripping flowers out of people's yards and selling them back. Years later, he would use that savvy to grow his family's wine store from $3 to $45 million in just a few short years by launching WineLibrary.com, one of America's first wine websites. Fast forward to now, and he's continued to use that same business savvy, along with his brother, to build VaynerMedia, a new breed of agency that helps Fortune 500 companies like GE, PepsiCo, Hasbro and the New York Jets find their social media voices and build their digital brands. Along the way Gary launched a stratospherically successful internet wine show, written two bestselling books, and beaten Dr. Oz in basketball.

Not really a book that you read from cover to cover, so this is sort of like reviewing a book of trivia that you pick up while doing something in the bathroom.

That being said, Mr. Vaynerchuk brings his in your face pop reference style found on his podcast to paper format wonderfully. I do have a rather major criticism, however. In the forward, he explains his methodology for picking wines to make the book, and that included having the wines be available to the public. Then, early in, he is including wines that are only produced in the 300 case range. That's only 3,600 bottles of a wine. Either he seriously doubted how many copies of his book he was going to sell, or he lost his vision along the way.

Regardless, there are many a value items, and in high production that should be easy to find, and It will open your mind up to other styles and places you perhaps had not considered before.

I'm definitely a Vayniac and I liked this book, but it's not the same as watching his webcast. If you try just reading it through like I did, it gets repetitive pretty quickly, but I admit that's probably not the way to use this volume. It should be more like read, sip, read, sip, etc. I appreciate that Gary set out to include readily available wines, but unfortunately, the first one I attempted to acquire was from a winery now closed! The Buck Zin, if I remember correctly. Anyway, a useful guidebook that does exhibit Gary's unique personality, but you basically get that with the Thunder Show, which is free, and includes more wrestling and Jets references than this book.

Great book to help you expand your palate in the world of wine. Written by Internet Celeb Gary Vaynerchuk. In his own words Gary describes the flavors and aromas he picks up in these wines that he thinks brings the Thunder. Fun book to read, written with the same enthusiasm he has in his internet show Wine Library TV.

I was thinking this is a book where Gary would talk more about his experience in wine and life. However, after the first part of this book, when the 101 wine part come in. It does not look like what I am expecting to read. It is a good one to keep for reference maybe when needed.
