The Illmoor Chronicles #3

The Shadewell Shenanigans

Groan Teethgrit and Gordo Goldeaxe have looted one village too many, and now the Lords of Illmoor are baying for their blood. Can Duke Modeset, exiled Lord of Dullitch, devise a plan clever enough to topple the duo AND Groan's equally reckless half-brother? Of course he can't, he's next to useless himself ...

... but he does have one secret weapon: an extremely beautiful princess who seems willing to do absolutely nothing for the good of her country.

It's been a long time since I read the first two books in this series, so I was kind of worried the humor wouldn't hold up well, but I was not disappointed. It's full of quirky and interesting characters who meet up under the strangest circumstances to do some of the strangest things in the strangest way possible, and it's wonderfully fantastic.

I do wish I hadn't waited so long to read this one because I'm sure there are tons of little references to the first two books that I just don't remember, so I'm looking forward to rereading them all (and finishing the series) in quicker succession so I can get the full experience.

Once again the hilarious story of a very corrupt place of Illmoor stroke again. Though, I was not as impressed as the first two books. The story didn't fail to be wicked in its unfortunate way. There was really a mark of craziness of how it was written. But my fascination of it wore off after 2 books and I was not so ecstatic about this 3rd book, rather weary of its heavy wordings and sarcastic anecdotes. Yet I still give it a 4 because it was after all, the mark of Illmoor.

Absolute brilliance from start to finish. All the Illmoor books are great reads but for me this is the best of them by far, a real high point in a fantastic series.

As usual Duke Modeset's life and social status are in tatters. This time however he has a plan to not only redeem himself for good, but also to take out some old enemies in the process. If only everything would stop going disastrously wrong at every turn...

This story is so well written, and without a doubt the funniest book I've ever read. The tongue in cheek humour which is present throughout the series is truly at its best here. The plot is also very clever, with three huge surprises coming together in the last chapters to form an ending I didn't see coming at all. A novel I'd happily give more than 5 stars to

Yeah, it's a good enough book. I did not read the first two books, or any other in the chronicles - but I feel like it worked well enough as a stand alone. I'm sure there were subtleties and backstory that I missed, but that didn't take too much away from the read I don't think. It was good enough that I'll be keeping my eye out for the other 4 books - not so good that I'll be purchasing them immediately.

The Illmoor books are a fun, silly series to read. This book was not quite as good as the others, but I still enjoyed it.

I actually thought this one was the funniest of all three, but most reviews don't agree with me.

Maybe it was because I started with book 3 but it was hard to follow and I struggled with getting involved in the book.
