This one crept up below my radar via Edelweiss. I had no idea what I was getting into and was very pleasantly surprised by this folklore inspired horror comic. It's a modern day tale set in Ireland between 3 different warring factions in fairie. Orla is a teenager with the "sight". Most people think she's crazy, because she can see through changelings glamours and is constantly drawing their true faces. The story and art worked hand and hand together to provide a dark, gripping tale of family and loss among the supernatural. Hopefully, there will be more of "The Hunt" in the future.

Received an advance copy from Image and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

World Terror Challenge - 1. Ireland.

Wonderfully creepy and gorgeously illustrated graphic novel about the The Sluagh, (pronounced Sl00-ah), traditional Gaelic Fae. But these are not the nice butterfly-winged, chatting with the birds and bees type you may have heard of. These are nasty restless creatures interested in your soul.

I adored the concept of this, the artwork, language and the characters, but as with some other graphic novels, I had to keep checking back as I was confused a couple of times over which character was which when the author relied solely on the illustrations to tell me rather than the text.

I'll be seeking out more Lorimer, as stand-alone graphic horror is a little thin on the ground here.

A combination of horror and folklore bring an engaging and creepy story. Set in Ireland, among the Gaelic/Celtic mythology of the Sluagh, this is the story of a family cursed for centuries. Only select members of the family can "see" and this book centres on a young woman, Orla, and her Granny, both with the sight. Orla's dad had his soul taken from him in death and now her little brother is in danger of the same. This is the story of the sacrifices she makes for her family. The art is gorgeous, especially the covers and even though not numbered as a Vol. 1, the ending does leave us to know that there is much more to come.

I am not a big fan of the horror genre so it was with some trepidation that I picked up this book. I am a fan of Colin Lorimer's artwork, but this was my first foray into something he had written. This is another example of when taking a chance ending up paying off big! This is a meticulously crafted story, utilizing an Irish legend, that kept me up at night. (Reading... really...) Colin succeeds in immersing the reader into an Irish setting, even making me hear the accent in my head, while at the same time making the supernatural aspect appear believable.

I want to avoid telling you about the creepies, but let me say, the female protagonist is far braver than I would ever be in facing these things. As you read the story, you will understand where she gets her gumption from, but still, I would be on a plane to Bermuda. As the tale unfolds, you are drawn into this otherworld of terrors that leaves you quite uncertain how things will play out. Lets just say I did not see the ending coming and leave it at that.

I was captivated by this story and was happy for Colin in crafting such a terrific novel. At the end of the book he has a few extras, including who he based some of the characters on. One in particular I did not get, but on going back to the story I then saw the resemblance immediately. From the Detective investigating a disappearance to an ailing grandmother, every character is well drawn out and relatable. I sincerely hope Colin does more work as he is absolutely an author and artist to watch!

A different take on a child coping with the death of a parent, The Hunt goes on to tell the story of Orla Roche, a girl who was there with her father on his deathbed. The difference? She saw The Sluagh take his soul. Years later, Orla is trying to find it, thinking and believing that it's trapped in some part of the netherworld. This begins her journey for answers and she gets more than she bargains for.

I think that there really is no true way to grieve. My mom has been gone a long time and I still grieve for her, everyday, try to find her in the little things I say and do. And it's hard. Very hard. But I have to just wait until the day I die to ask her if I did ok and if she's pregnant our of me and my choices. And that's ok. That's what this story reminded me of. So I viscerally related to it. The illustrations were scary but fantastic and it struck the right balance between the two. I loved it.

As they say in Spinal Tap, this one goes to 11. Yes, I am aware goodreads is only a 5 star rating system, and yes, it still gets an 11!

I received a signed copy of this as a gift from my special lady (thanks to both Colin and Anika!) after reading the individual issues and falling in love with the series.

Colin Lorimer does an amazing job with this series. It is a fantastic fantasy/horror story, wonderfully written and executed. My only disappointment was that my local comic shop had it originally listed as a 6 part series and it ended up only being 5 issues. Hopefully someday we will see a return to the dark and disturbing, yet colourful and beautiful, world of The Hunt.

Colin's artwork is second to none, I feel he is probably the most underrated artist in the comic business. After reading this series I went on to find other works he has done. Although he has worked with some amazing writers he really proves with this series that he doesn't need anyone to provide a background for his incredible dark art. Colin completely knocked this work out of the park. I couldn't possibly say enough good things about this series, nor could I thank Colin enough for bringing this great work to life. I would also like to commend Joana and Jim for their contributions to the book, as it all came together so beautifully.

In short: READ THIS! Then go buy anything and everything this man has done. You will not be disappointed. You can thank me (and more importantly Colin) later.

3.5

This was the very first comic book issue I purchased and it's quite fitting that I've taken years to start reading it. I haven't come across another work by Colin Lorimer and that's something I'll look into now that I've finished this. The Image Comics line-up isn't in any short demand for horror comics, but The Hunt was something unique and different compared to other books I've read.

Why the 3.5?

This easily could've hit a 4 but I'm staying with the 3.5. I felt the storyline was punchy and the artwork was atmospheric, but the character's weren't there for me. I had been expecting more after that unforgettable first issue conclusion. The book maintains a certain ambiguity throughout and that finale was interesting. If you're in the market for an obscure title it might interest you.

The Hunt is a urban fantasy about Orla, a girl who had witnessed creatures called Slaugh taking her father's soul on his deathbed. Now, a decade later, she is being followed around by changelings, who want her to help them out for something, and meanwhile, she is still searching for her father's stolen soul. The main crux of the story is this power struggle between the fairies, the changelings and the Slaugh, and while the story doesn't go into much detail about it, she has some role to play that involves her being able to help the Slaugh gain a foothold into the mortal world. But that is mostly conjecture on my part, because this five chapter graphic novel leaves me with more questions than answers at the end.

The mood of The Hunt is very dark and horror-like, and if you love Irish mythology, this one is a treat with it plumbing the darker undertones of those myths. It brings in the changelings as they walk among us, hidden but still dangerous, and not visible to everyone. Orla and her grandmother definitely have some spiritual powers, as they are able to cast spells, but nothing explains the netherworld's connections to the family, yet. Along with this paranormal element, another concurrent storyline is that of the cops (or at least one cop in particular) investigating the strange events in their family, and the multiple disappearances of Orla throughout the years, and now the disappearance of her younger brother. The latter is important because he is a secret of Orla's and her grandmother's, as they did something that was hidden from the netherworld. Basically, it has a multi-layered arc and a pervasive sense of danger that hovers.

As for the artwork, it is one of the best I have come across for a graphic novel of this length. It is beautifully rendered and detailed, and the whimsical strokes of the fairies and the harsh and cruel deformities of the changelings and the Slaugh are both crafted wonderfully. Even the human parts of the story are done with loving detail, and some scenes just awed me with their lineart. It is, overall, very dark in the book all the time, though, so I can never figure out if it is day or night *laughs*. In any case, the artwork definitely has me in love and even though I usually prefer stories like these in prose (as they would be more detailed), I feel it works in this medium too.

Overall, a very interesting urban fantasy story with some delightfully dark artwork. If only some elements of the plot and the backstories were better explained, this book would have been perfect.

I won this comic a while back in a good reads giveaway

I love the darn thing. The art is gorgeous, now there are some pretty nasty bits in there too, but the style and color, especially the woods of the other side. It's just beautifully colored and very flowey. The characters feel real, to me, they feel like they're genuinely going through some shit while trying to deal with day to day life. I mean how many people find out the monsters in the woods are real, and are coming after you, and still manage normalcy??

The plot is a fairly slow build even though from the beginning it lets its readers know that we're dealing with monsters. This is good, a slow exposition to the big problem, interesting enough to keep you going but not so slow that it drags.

I've added this to my body horror shelf because, while I don't think the monsters are that scary looking, a monster combined with a human shell, and then what happens to Olly, is pretty jarring because the build up to it is very well down. It's slow, you know somethings off, but it's vague, and it gets under Orla's skin, which makes the audience more unnerved, and I especially love that the layout of the pages managed to play a part in it. Having the reveal come right after a page is turned [the odd numbered page], so it's got the surprise factor. instead of being on the even numbered page and losing power by being seen before the words build up to it. This might not make that great of sense so just take my word for it that the buildup is good, and the page layout works in its favor.

I also love that it incorporates the dialect in the characters word bubbles, I had me quite a laugh when I started reading it, had to read some parts out loud. We need more of this in all books everywhere.

Even more I love that our protagonist, while doing something as dangerous as facing the monsters head on, does so in a clever way, she works deftly with her grandmother to outsmart these creatures because there is really no way for a human to beat one in a fair fight.

Honestly I just want more, I want to see what happens, I wanna know if Orla is alright. I wanna know what happened to Olly. I wanna see granny healing and kicking butt. I need more.

I actually really enjoyed this graphic novel. This TPB contains all the issues of The Hunt in one volume.

This graphic novel is set in modern day but deals with evil fae that suck the souls from sick humans. It’s a very dark and somewhat gory story. However I really enjoyed the fae mythology in here and enjoyed the horror themed spin on it all.

The illustration is amazing, I especially loved the scenes in the fairy realm. The colors are rich and beautiful and the graphic novel is easy to follow.

Things are left kind of open ended but the main storyline is tied up. It would be great to see future graphic novels set in this world.

Overall I really liked this. This was a well done blend of horror and fae mythology. I would recommend to those who enjoy fantasy horror graphic novels.

Dark engaging comic collection about Irish supernatural

Based in Ireland, this comic collection deals with Orla who witnesses a supernatural event affecting her father when she's just a little girl. A significantly good artist, as a teenager, she faces the bullying of her classmates. The plot proceeds quickly as Orla confronts the Sluagh about their interference in her family's lives as they gather souls to maintain their existence.

With clear illustrations, this mystery story is well worth a look. It's gripping and engaging stuff. I think that this is a one-off collection rather than a series. I hope so as the ending should be a final one.

Definitely, not a children approved comic book. This is a dark horror of evil soul stealing spirits. For those into a mythology that will put shivers down your spine, this may be just the book for you.

I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I am under no obligation to write a review and do so voluntarily. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.

A terrifying story with a beautiful ending

The legends of fairies come from ancient Celtic legends. what if the Fae are still with us? How would they interact with our world? This graphic novel shares a tale of the Wild Hunt and forces us to ask: who exactly is the prey?

Excellent storytelling and spectacular artwork!

I thought I would love this. It's got several elements I love in a story: Irish folklore, horror, female protagonists...but dear lord, is it ever incoherent and randomly constructed. Could have benefited from an editor.

In brief: When Orla was a kid, she witnessed her father’s soul being stolen by the Sluagh. Now in her late teens, she’s on one last desperate quest to rescue him.

Thoughts: I’m not really sure how I feel about this one. On the one hand, it’s got those creepy fairies and urban fantasy grit that I love, and it deals with the real-world consequences of believing in fairies and working magic in the modern world, and the art is fantastic. The dialogue’s good and the interaction between characters feels very realistic, and perfectly Irish.

On the other hand, the characters felt like they existed to serve the story Lorimer wanted to tell, rather than the other way round, and there were points in the story that left me a little confused, a little lost, like there were scenes that had been taken out so the story would fit comic format better. And I felt the ending came a bit out of nowhere and it left me feeling unresolved and a bit disappointed. (Lorimer spends time building up a few supporting characters and then … doesn’t do a whole lot with them.)

I might have liked the story better if it had been a novel rather than a comic, which would have given Lorimer time to really flesh everything out and build the atmosphere more. It’s Gaimanesque as it stands but it could have been a lot more so. I don’t regret reading it, but I wasn’t very impressed with it overall either.

Warnings: Child abduction, accusations of mental illness, forced use of psychological medication, gore.

6/10

How would you even begin to explain the plot of this comic? Because I’m definitely incapable to trying to fully explain what The Hunt is all about. And the synopsis isn’t the best either. I’m intrigued to see where the story goes (if that ever happens, since these five issues are the only ones that are out). Anyway, it’s not bad.

I thought a bit of it was slightly confusing, but other than that this was incredibly interesting and unique. There were some really creepy stuff happening in this one. The artwork in this was fantastic. I love the art style and it fit the tone of the story. It’s definitely one of my favourite artworks - I really need to check from this artist.

This is a great example of urbanised fantasy, bringing to life the mythology of the fae in moder day Ireland. The illustrations and plot constructed around the traditional stories of fairies make an amazing story. However, I did find the characters to be difficult to like and lacking in motivation, as well as there being harsh jumps between the scenes that could've been made to flow better.

I really wanted to like this one based on the plot description. But after reading it, it was majorly confusing with the timeline and it jumping around from different scenes. It was hard to keep up with. Im still not 100% sure I completely understand the story as it meant to be understood.

The artwork is simply stunning, and the premise of the soul-stealing spirits was interesting, but it didn't quite 'grab' me. The dialect also kept throwing me off - I had to read slowly and carefully. I am curious about the next issue, nonetheless, as it has certainly been set up to be exciting.
