Nineteen-year-old Myla Lewis has transformed into Great Scala, the only being with the power to move souls out of Purgatory and into Heaven or Hell. Trouble is, a magical object called Lucifer’s Orb is limiting Myla’s abilities. If she tries to move a soul, the Orb’s forcing her to send that spirit straight to Hell.
So, what’s a girl to do? Send innocents to the fiery down-under?
No way. Myla’s gone on a supernatural strike. No souls go anywhere until the Orb’s history. It’s the right thing to do, but Purgatory’s Soul Storage buildings are turning into time bombs. No spirits are moving out, while millions keep coming in. Myla’s determined to find the Orb and send the innocent to Heaven, but she’s running out of time. Soon, the containment fields will burst, releasing a mob of homicidal ghosts.
With Soul Storage ready to explode, Myla’s got enough on her plate without her old enemy, Lady Adair, causing problems. Adair is launching an ingenious campaign to take away everything that Myla holds dear, including Myla’s Angelbound love, Prince Lincoln.
Between their clever ideas and toe-curling kisses, Myla and Lincoln are fighting back. But will they beat the clock or lose everything to Adair’s devious schemes?

Myla Lewis. The Great Scala. A Main character who knows how to kick your arse and then dry your eyes when you are crying about it. I adore her.
This book starts off where the first one Angelbound leaves off. Myla is officially the great Scala. She hasn't performed her first time in moving the souls from purgatory to either Heaven or Hell because an Orb that blocks souls from entering Heaven has not been found.
The book does suffer some of the second book syndrome but I still really like the story and characters enough that I can move past that. Myla still has enough of mouth on her (with no filter) that I root for her no matter what she has gotten herself into. No insta-love between her and Lincoln either...Just hotness.
This image from the back of the first book is just perfect of these two characters.
Adair-that chick who wanted to have Lincoln and be the Scala heir in the first book comes back in this one as the little bitch that she is. Be prepared to hate her.
This book is much shorter than the first book in the series. I kinda hate that. I missed the time with some of the characters..but that just means that Christina Bauer can write some more books about them. :)
I recieved a copy of this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. That in no way affected my review of this book. Cuz well everyone knows I'm a bitch if I don't like a book.
Although I enjoyed the previous book more, this was overall a good read. The adventure was entertaining and the fight scenes were awesome.
The main reason why I'm not rating this a 5 star read is because of the story. I didn't like how the antagonist was an immature girl that always had tantrums. Her jealousy was annoying and it just didn't do it for me.
I also didn't like some of Myla's inner dialogue. I found her really immature at times, and I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes.
Christina Bauer is a creative author, and I love her ideas. But sometimes it just feels like she makes things up as she goes. Certain topics are often unclear and unexplained. With a little bit more planning, I feel like her stories could be improved.
Scala is book two in the Angelbound series by Christina Bauer. I enjoyed this one a lot more than I did book one. It moved a lot faster, and I really enjoyed the way the characters have developed.
Myla is now the Great Scala. She has accepted who she is and the duties that comes with it. I love how she has taken charge. Her relationship with Lincoln is rock solid. Although I still felt some of their encounters were a little awkward, I liked the partnership they have formed. They support each other no matter what and never question one another. I think this in itself was one of my favorite things. I also love how Myla’s Mother has developed. She is now the President of Purgatory and I loved the strong woman she is now, just like she used to be back in her pre-war Senator days.
Unfortunately, along with the new title and job responsibilities, comes all the headaches involved. Armageddon has hidden Lucifer’s Orb somewhere in Purgatory. The Orb contains demonic power which is keeping Myla from being able to send any of the souls to heaven. She can only send them to hell. The storage containers are overflowing with souls. Some want her to go ahead and just empty out the containers and send all the souls to hell but Myla refuses. She refuses to allow that to happen to the souls deserving otherwise.
“You’ve made a really brave choice to stand by those souls. You’re carrying a huge responsibility right now.”
At the same time, she is being stalked by Lady Adair. Even after saving her life in the first book, Adair wants what she sees is hers. She wants to be the Great Scala and she wants Lincoln. She is sabotaging Myla at every turn. But she has also found a way to steal some of the igni which is what the Scala uses to move souls, from Myla. How is she able to do this? And Adair obviously has help.
“All of Adair’s actions have worked towards a single goal. Causing the mass riots, fear, and panic that end in my assassination and her ascension as the Great Scala. Bottom line, she thinks I stole her life, and now she’s stealing it back.”
So on Myla’s to do list: Find the Orb and get rid of it, clear out the soul storage tanks and send the souls where they belong. Get her power back from Adair and prove to everyone that she is the rightful Scala, and once again, save Pergatory. All in a day’s work, right? Can she do it and will there even be a chance for a future for she and Lincoln or will Lincoln be forced to bend to Adair’s will?
There really is no cliff hanger at the end of the book but still some things to be resolved so I look forward to continuing the series with book three, Armageddon.
Clearly there was more to Myla than being a kick-ass fighter with a sharp tongue, quick wit and pointed tail. Newly transformed into the Great Scala, with the ability to move souls to heaven or hell (as needed). But something is rotten in Purgatory and Myla’s powers have been thwarted. Seems there is something called Lucifer’s Orb and it is interfering with sending any soul anywhere but to hell…and Myla isn’t about to do a slipshod job. The problem? The containment fields where the souls are waiting are bursting at the seams and someone is out to ensure that Myla fails in a very big way and it’s all because of spurned love and an obsession with power. True, Myla can be abrasive, but her relationship with Lincoln is as solid as a rock and Adair will do anything to blast it apart, and someone is helping her in her nasty quest.
Christina Bauer’s SCALA is every bit as entertaining as ANGELBOUND, but this time out the action is ramped up to high, and Myla has more than stepped up to the plate at every turn! Talk about a character growing right before your eyes! Myla and Lincoln have their moments, they are young, new to relationships and yet, they have those core ingredients, love, respect and trust. Will it be enough when Adair really ramps up her mission to destroy Myla?
Once again, fabulous dialogue, characters that are evolving and one heck of a dilemma makes SCALA one of those edge of your seat reads that has you coaching from behind the scenes, in between smirking and all those fist pumps for Myla!

“When it comes to battle, take the offensive and never let go.”
It felt so wonderful to dive back into the world of Angelbound. I loved the first book and I loved this book just as much. I can't wait to continue reading this series.
Being named the Great Scala comes with some new responsibilities, like moving all the souls to either heaven or hell. Yet with Lucifer's orb hidden somewhere in Purgatory, Myla doesn't have any choice where to send the souls. Just when they think they found the secret location of the orb, Adair comes back to claim her rightful title as the Great Scala and steal Lincoln back, normally she wouldn't stand a chance, but with new powers at her side, Adair is able to steal some of Myla's powers. Can Myla get her powers back, and find the orb before Purgatory is overrun by ghosts?
I cannot tell you how much I've missed Myla, she will forever be one of my favourite characters. I love how mischievous she is, but also how kindhearted and smart she tends to be. She never ceases to amaze me.
I've definitely missed the world too! I talked about this a lot in my review of Angelbound (if you haven't read that one yet, go read it first), but I loved the world Christina created. The whole area of Purgatory with quasi, ghouls and thrax is all so clever and wonderful. But my favourite aspect of the story is when Myla's demon personalities take over, or how her tail has control of itself. Let me tell you, that if you loved those aspects too then you will definitely be not disappointed in the sequel.
What I loved most of all about this book, is the romance. One thing I hate, that's usually a pattern in YA books, is that in the second book usually the main characters get into a huge fight and rethink their whole relationship, blah blah blah, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Yet with this book, Myla and Lincoln always have each other's backs and their love only gets stronger. I was so happy to see that, it makes my ship for them even stronger!
I wish I could have given this book 5 stars, but I felt like the plot of the story was a little rushed. It seemed like something major was happening in every chapter, and before you know it you're at the end.
Overall, I still loved this story and will continue to be a huge fan of this series. I highly recommend this book to all fantasy lovers, but definitely start with the first book in the series. Now I'm off to read the next book, because I can't wait to get more of Myla and Lincoln.
A fantastic sequel to ANGELBOUND! Loved it. Getting to see Lincoln and Myla work together=awesome! It's got ass kicking and romance and made me laugh out loud. Don't miss this one! :)
while i enjoyed the first book more, this was a super solid sequel and i can't wait to get the rest of the series!
things i liked: 1. myla lewis is one of my favorite protagonists. she is relatable, quirky, and completely badass. her hilarious inner monologue is honestly what makes this series so awesome! ^^^ myla AF
2. the whole CONCEPT is just so unique. purgatory and scala and thrax, oh my! i get so sucked into the world. 3. i love books where the problem isn't the parents/friends/boyfriends. myla has awesome, kickass parents, and this book her relationship with lincoln (*makes heart eyes*) develops. people that fight demons together stay together! and then there's her best friend cissy, who is supportive and smart and literally the World's Best Friend™
not as much 1. i didn't think the plot of this book was quite as strong as the first book. it seemed a bit rushed, and slightly one-dimensional. like there was the main plot line, and everyone dealt with it--and that was it. i would've loved to see even more lincoln-myla time and cissy-myla time, and more myla-fighting-demons! that said, it was still a super enjoyable book!
RECAP: STRONG, BADASS GIRLS. PURGATORY. GHOULS AND DEMONS AND ANGELS. DEMON-FIGHTING PRINCES. HILARIOUS INNER MIND.
I read and loooooved Angelbound by Christina Bauer, so of course I wanted to read the sequel as soon as it came out. (Actually, I got an ARC, so I read it before it came out :-D) I was a little disappointed to see that it was only a novella, but then I remembered that 52,000 is a pretty long novella and was okay with it. And, really, I think it was the appropriate length for the plot. I would have gotten annoyed if the story had gone on for any longer, and I felt there were the right number of twists and turns.
I enjoyed Scala a lot overall. Lots of continued adventure in an awesome and unique world. I think Myla is a great character. She is determined to do whatever she thinks is right, and is willing to kick a little ass to ensure that she gets to do so. She takes her new responsibilities as Scala very seriously, while also taking time out to spend with her family and boyfriend, Lincoln.
Am I being negative if I say that I think Lincoln was a liiiiiiittle too perfect? There were a few times that I thought he would get annoyed at something Myla did, but he ranged from "Let's do this together instead of you doing it alone" to "OMG, Myla, even when you are meddling in my life, you are perfect." Which I didn't think was all that realistic, since all couples disagree on some things. And it's not that I want realism in my fantasy. I just want conflict. To keep things interesting.
So after Angelbound, I really wanted Adair to be redeemable. I mean, it's only like she pretended to be the Scala heir, thus endangering all the realms when she wasn't able to actually be the Scala and... Never mind, I guess she was pretty awful. And there was a point in Angelbound where it was pretty clear that if she had any good qualities, they would have come out. But... I wanted the Thrax to be the good guys, descended from angels as they were. But I think we establish in Scala that she's pretty much just evil.
The next book is due out in October, so yay for that! Apparently Lincoln and Myla have a baby, which is an interesting jump from their I'm-not-giving-an-spoilers relationship status at the end of Scala. But I guess he is a prince and all, so having children is high on his to-do list. It also seems to be a jump out of the YA genre, but I shall reserve my judgment until I read it.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
4*s I thought Scala was a great sequel to Angelbound and it was good to be back in Myla’s world. Myla is now the Great Scala – charged with moving souls to their final destinations in either Heaven or Hell – but there is a problem…. She can’t move souls to their correct destination when all souls are being transported straight to Hell thanks to a long lost magical object – Lucifer’s orb – interfering with her Scala powers. Myla is reluctant to send the souls to the wrong place and she knows that a lot are bound for heaven, so the souls are building up in their containment units – known as ghost towers – and are set to explode if Myla can’t find the orb and remove it from Purgatory. This is just the tip of Myla’s problem when Lady Adair – Lincoln’s ex, Myla’s nemesis, fake Scala & all around b*tch – decides to stick her oar into the situation, trying to show that Myla is incompetent at her job and soon will cause a ghost meltdown with Purgatory as their playground. Myla knows she’s up to something, but what? It seems like we have all underestimated Lady Adair….. So, I thought this was great sequel. I love Myla’s character, she is so easy to read and get into her head, I love her sense of self and her voice – full of spark & sass – and I’m glad it travelled well into this book because she could have lost herself to the power she now holds. I’m glad that she and Lincoln have remained close, I liked in the first book that he had set aside a prejudice for ‘quasis’ to see Myla as a an equal person rather than a demon and that they had fell in love, they truly are good for each other and I like his faith in her also. I loved the direction their relationship took her, it felt natural and right and very satisfying. I liked the storyline and I liked the threat that it brought. I did have a problem with it being the ‘ex’ that was bringing the threat, I’m not a fan of love triangles or ‘other women’ competing for our heroines man – regardless of him being hers in the beginning – it makes me uneasy reading the book and it overshadows how I feel about the storyline, which is sad because if it was anyone else as the threat, I wouldn’t been bothered. Saying that I can definitely appreciate how the story came together and I do admit that the progression was really good. I like the problems that were facing Myla with regards to the souls and the mastering of her powers. I thought the Lucifer’s orb part was good and could have been used more as a scavenger hunt type of thread but again, I liked what it brought to the story. With all of Adair’s scheming, it does make you start to question whether she was the puppet or the master and if she was the puppet….who is pulling her strings? I liked that we saw more of the secondary characters too, Myla’s Dad is very interesting as is Lincolns Mother and I definitely need to know more about Walker. I thought the story was fun, sweet, a little sad but also filled with scheming, misdirection and a good few twists and turns that kept everyone right on their toes and lead to an awesome ending. I look forward to book 3.
My Review: I have been so excited for the release of Scala ever since I read Angelbound in December! I received a personal email from Christina with an ARC of Scala. *excited* She is so awesome! Christina even agreed to arrange an interview with Queen Octavia, who I managed to meet on such short notice.
Honestly upfront.. I think Scala was even better than Angelbound - even if it was shorter. Yes, I wish there was more... but the quality was brilliant.
Scala picks up where Angelbound ended. Christina quickly draws you in quickly starting with an emergency at one of the ghost towers and a confrontation with Adair.
Characters & Story line: 5/5 The characters were well rounded and easy to love (or hate.. Sorry Adair.. but you fill that role!).
Myla & Lincoln - Myla, the main character, is as spunky & awesome as ever. I definitely think I enjoyed her role more this time round. She is your typical teenager with so much more to deal with than the average quazi in purgatory. She is one kick-ass character. Lincoln is one of those characters just gets better & better. He is totally swoon worthy. Lincoln and Myla make such a great team. Through all their obstacles, (and there are a few), they stick together so well. Their romantic moments are steamy and I enjoy how Lincoln has come to accept Myla so completely.
Adair - Grrrr.... Adair just irritates & annoys me. Christina really had my emotions going when it came to Adair. I really tried to feel sorry for her but geez... she just got my blood boiling most of the time! Guess that is what makes a good villain right...
Walker - I still love Walker to bits!
Myla's parents - they are just so awesome. Funny, smart and back Myla up all the way! I really enjoyed her Dad's ways and thinking. I laughed at the idea of Heaven being run like a Military!
The Igni - these little beings are so cute, that they deserve their own special mention!!! I love them and I love how Myla is so attached to them. I think in a way the remind me of minions and I love minions!!!
Plot, Pace, Writing style: 4.5/5 Christina has grown as a writer and I enjoy the humor she brings to her writing. Her purgatory world building is amazing. The plot is captivating and the pace is good. The only reason it is not a 5/5 is that I wish the book was a bit longer. And to round it all up, it had a really sweet ending.
Cover talk: 5/5 I love that cover! It really shows a different side to Myla.
Final Thoughts: This is a great addition to the series and I cannot wait to see where things go for Myla & Lincoln.
A wonderful followup to Angelbound. What I think is so great about this book, and important for YA, is the relationships Myla has are all incredibly supportive - her parents, Cissy, and Lincoln. It's awesome getting to know Xavier, Myla's Angel father. Cissy stands by her, helps her and kicks ass in her own right. Lincoln never considers giving into Adair's demands (unlike his father) and instead of taking over for Myla or insisting on being a knight in shining armor. Nope. He believes in standing by Myla and tackling obstacles as a team, as equals. Partners. That's unusual in the book world. To me it makes for richer characters, truer characters - not plot driven. Myla is still a great character too. She hasn't let being the Great Scala change her in any way. Well, she may be slightly more diplomatic. Maybe. But she still goes on her demon hunts, has scathing sarcastic wit, and in the end, speaks her mind and gives people the wakeup call they need. Satisfying.
I hope there will be more books with these characters. There's at least one more, but I hope the Acca issues will take more than one book to resolve.
I was fortunate enough to receive an early copy of this book and my god, I DEVOURED it! Christina Bauer has quickly become one of my favorite authors for the simple fact that she creates a story that sucks you in from the very beginning with characters that have you swooning one moment and laughing the very next.
I adore Myla Lewis. I love her strength, her wit, her no filter mouth. She's no girly girl and thank god for that! Yet the chemistry with her love interest, the oh so dreamy Prince Lincoln is HOT!
I won't say anymore than that because I highly recommend picking up the book and falling in love with the series yourself.
While I really liked the 1st book, this one lost my interest. It was just a bit too "moustache-twirly" for me. And so major skimming ensued and I now have no desire to continue with this series.
As mentioned yesterday, this was my other sequel review that I was excited about and came out on the same day, Scala book 2 in the Angelbound series by Christina Bauer. Thank you again to NetGalley and Ink Monster for letting me read it almost a week early to review. Not as early to post, but bright side, it is on sale today so you can click right on over and order it ;)
Scala takes place a few months after the end of Angelbound, if you don't remember it check out the review here. Myla is now not only bad ass quasis (half human/half demon) with a wicked dragon tail and years of combat training under her belt, she is now also the Great Scala. That means she is the only one with the power to move souls out of Purgatory and into their final resting place of Heaven of Hell. Sounds good right? Well not so much when Lucifer's Orb is limiting her ability and making it so she can only send souls to Hell. Yikes!
Unwilling to send innocent souls to rot in Hell she does the natural thing and goes on strike until the Orb is found and removed. Problem is, with so many souls coming into Purgatory every month the storage buildings are filling up like pressure cookers. Myla wants to stick to her beliefs and not risk the souls of those meant for Heaven but she is running out of time and risking all of Purgatory if the souls break free and overrun the living. Not the easier job in the world for our 19 year old girl.
Also keep in mind she is also dealing with politics and her old enemy, the witchy whiney brat, Lady Adair who is bound to make her life more difficult. She wants what Myla has, what she feels was taken from her, the prestige, the power, and most of all Prince Lincoln. But with Myla and Lincoln not only are they able to steam up some serious scenes but they are also able to work together and bring out the best of one another and fight back against all of their enemies seen and unseen. But is that enough this time?
I really love the covers with these series from Ink Monster, simple and beautiful. Myla in her Scala robes which also can change to armor, very resourceful when you are part wrath demon and under constant attack. All the things in the first book, the strong personality of our main character Myla are still there even as she struggles with uncertainty in her new position holding so much power and not wanting to make the wrong choice. We also have more Lincoln but as much as she wants to spend all her time with the man, Prince, she loves he is busy being a prince and demon hunter and she has her own things to deal with so making things work takes some work too.
This is a short novella type story and was a quick read. I finished it in a few hours, sadly broken up as I kept getting interrupted. I easily rate this book 5 stars and am excited to note that the next book Armageddon is set to come out October 14th so again, not a long wait at all which is beyond appealing.
This book is definitely a mouth-watering chocolate cake for me, I chomp it all in a few hours. I must be hungry. I don't think I'll write my version of the summary now (maybe later I'll add it here) because I am super excited to tell you guys that this book is worth waiting for months.
The main character, Myla Lewis, who is also the Great Scala (the one and only who could move souls to hell and heaven) looked super bad-ass in her Scala robes and igni (some kind of power, Scala's power...). God, I love her. And when I say I love Myla, of course I love her partner in crime slash boyfriend, Lincoln the Thrax (half human half angel warriors who hunt demons) prince. He's... I'm out of words. The chemistry between them is pure love I'm telling you. It was so damn sweet that I just have to quote it.
Listen to me, Myla. You will be my Queen one day, mark my words. Adair will never come between us
After Angelbound (the first book) I never thought I would actually see Adair again, the annoying girl from book one. She told everyone that she's Scala (she's not) and even got someone to cast some witchy spell so it was believable that she's Scala, this all happened in book one don't worry. When Adair confess that she's fake and everything I thought it was the end, but then she's here again. With extra bitchiness in her sleeves. God I want to kill her. Well that's enough about the characters.
The plot is so much fun! Well, I know it's not fun for Myla. The conflict felt so tough and unsolvable that you just can't help reading more and more. I have no idea how the characters would overcome it before. Thumbs up! And just like the first book, Christina Bauer's writing style is one of my favorites. Enough said.
As her true enemy becomes clear, she discovers that all the after-realms are at risk... After losing so much power, does she still have the strength to save her world?
Our heroine is still a bada** and I love it. Also, she has grown from Angelbound to Scala. I'm so glad I took a chance and bought the first book because I'm really enjoying and loving this series.
Highly entertaining read.
Full of adventures, heart pounding movements, laugh out loud movements, steamy movements, angels, demons, thrax and ghouls.
Perfect for readers of paranormal romances.
Reread: Audiobook
A good listen. It was great listening to my favourite character coming alive.
Another mind-blowing novel by Christina Bauer in the Angebound Origins series. Like the previous books in the series, this one didn't disappoint. At all. I'm so impressed by the author's work in this series. She created a whole word, after world for being exact, and she did it wonderfully well. I'm glad I decided to give this series a chance. Everything about this story, the setting and the adventures that Myla and Lincoln are living is great and interesting. Scala is the continuation of Myla's journey into her being the Scala Heir. This time she had to deal with Adair, the Great Lady of the House of Acca, the biggest House among the Thrax. She wants to 'get back' the Great Scala powers, but most of all Lincoln. She goes beyond everything that Myla thought possible and at the end she had to take a big decision to save her people's life and the afterworld. With the usual people next to her, Lincoln, Walker, Cissy, her mum and dad, she takes things on her hands and she does it in Myla's way, like a warrior and with shrewdness. The only downside was the shortness of the book and the fact that there was no 'bond-time' between Xavier and Myla. It would have been great to see father and daughter bonding even during delicate situations they were living. We actually see Xavier often, but not as a father, merely as an 'helper' and I honestly feel disappointed because I expected much more on this point. Except for this I enjoyed the book a lot. Can't wait to grab the next!
Well, my good people, Christina Bauer has done it again. Angelbound was such a huge surprise for me last year. I requested it on a whim and practically inhaled it in one sitting, only to end up anxiously biting my nails while waiting for the sequel. Not that Bauer left us with a cliffhanger or anything. She’s not one of those authors, you know.
And quite frankly, it isn’t only the lack of cliffhangers that make Bauer and her series stand out. Everything about Angelbound is different, from the heroine, the romance, and her hilarious sidekick. The worldbuilding, while fairly simple, is also very interesting. Bauer does an excellent job in creating a challenging world for Myla.
In Scala, that worldbuilding becomes far richer in details. Since Myla is responsible for all the souls in Purgatory, we need to learn how everything functions. And since Myla is being attacked politically, the relationships between realms are very important. However, while it may sound a bit complicated at first, rest assured that Christina Bauer delivers it all painlessly. Being in Myla’s world is very easy, and spending time in her company is always such a delight.
The very best part of these books is, of course, the romance. Unnecessary romantic drama isn’t something Bauer does and I admire her greatly for it. Instead, we have soul mates, true partners and friends. Myla and Lincoln understand each other and support each other through everything. Lincoln is not one of those book boyfriends that conveniently disappear when push comes to shove. He follows Myla everywhere and she does the same for him.
There were some parts of this sequel that seemed a bit rushed. So many things were happening at once and the pacing was so fast, we barely had time to absorb and think things through. But even through those frantic scenes, Myla’s fabulous sense of humor served as a great tension reliever. And let me tell you, our Myla has matured so much! She isn’t one of those heroines that gain powers only to whine about them. She doesn’t indulge in self-pity and being indecisive is completely foreign to her.
I will conclude with this: I adore this series. Even with a somewhat inferior second book, it’s definitely worth your time. I’ll be stalking Netgalley for arcs of Armageddon, that’s for sure.
Outstanding. Christina Bauer blew my mind once again. Angelbound exceeded all of my expectations. And I have been waiting for to long for Scala to come out and I was happy when I received it on the 12th rather than on the 13th of may.
So Myla is now the Great Scala, and she is in a relationship with Lincoln. And the headstrong Myla is having a difficult time adjusting to her duties, especially handling the public relations even with her mother helping out on that. I found it so entertaining to see how Myla, being a badass fighter with demon wrath in her, would handle a battle she isn't used to fighting. Politics. And I have to say, I was not disappointed. ANd oh the funnies!!! It has just the right amount of good humor to it that just really adds to the character of Myla.
Myla, Myla, Myla, oh how I missed her spunky character. It is so refreshing to read about a super spunky, sassy, and badass female protagonist. I literally feel as though Myla is a real person. The thing I love most about Christina Bauer's writing, is how she can really make a character come to life and how she can manipulate the reader's feelings towards a certain one.
And Lincoln? Well, he's just there being the romantic, sexy warrior prince that always stirs the inner lust demon within Myla. Lincoln didn't really have much of an effect on the plot. HE was just there for moral support really and offered some services.
S Adair comes back and being a poopie head. I've never hated a character more than I hate Adair. There's not much I can say about her without spoiling the story for you good people.
The Romance... sadly it didn't really play a big part. I would have liked more, but that would have taken the focus off the plot, and in this book, the plot is a good one :)
And I am glad to see that when I turned the next page I saw the cover for the third book! YAY!
I would reccommend reading Angelbound first rather than just reading Scala as a standalone. You would be so lost, and you wouldn't as attached to characters.
I wasn't planning on reading the second book of the Angelbound trilogy but I saw it on NG and couldn't resist.
I loved Angelbound. It's original, with a extensive and interesting mythology and has one of the most awesome MC ever, Myla.
The second installment was waaay to short for my liking, I wanted more.
Myla Lewis is now the Great Scala, the only one with the power to move souls out of Purgatory and into Heaven or Hell. Easy, right? Well, no. Being the Scala is no easy job, specially with your boyfriend's ex doing the impossible to have your powers.. and your angelbound love.
This book lacks no action, intrigues and twists. Myla still kicks asses and her mouth still has no filter. She is the best, really. But now, she has to balance being Myla.. with being the Great Scala.
This book was provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I really adore this series! When you find a great first book, you realize the possibility that the second one is not so great is high. This was not the case! I really liked Scala. The enemy is a an evil bitch and the romance is melting. The heroine is how I like them, brave, stubborn and sensible. Great job, Mrs. Bauer! Vote: 4.5 stars By the way, the cover is really beautiful.
Another great read! I had to purchase a copy for myself and add to the collection. Christina Bauer has created one of my favorites series this year. Can't wait for book 3!!!!
Scala is a fast-paced sequel to Christina Bauer's Angelbound. An excellent read! Myla transforms into Great Scala, gatekeeper to Purgatory. Great characters, clever plot line.
Scala by Christina Bauer is straight-up amazing! Myla is seriously badass as Great Scala, but things get tricky when Lucifer’s Orb messes with her powers. She can’t send souls to Heaven without risking sending innocents to Hell, so she’s on strike—no souls moving until that Orb’s gone. But Purgatory’s about to explode, and she’s got to fix it fast.
The action in this book is nonstop! Myla’s racing against time while dealing with ghosts, her enemy Lady Adair, and trying to keep things together with Prince Lincoln. And oh my god, the chemistry between them is everything—so much tension, clever plans, and the kisses are just chef’s kiss.
Also, the narration is fantastic. It really pulls you into the world and amps up the intensity. If you’ve been reading the series, Scala takes it to a whole new level. If not, seriously, start reading! This series is just so good.
Five stars, no question. I need the next book now!
While the writing is so-so, and the setting is pretty lame, and the plot itself not much interesting (although with few interesting twists!), there is one thing to say for sure. I. LOVE. MYLA. OKAY?
She's badass. She has nice head on her shoulders. She's a smartass who can back up her talk. And she's really, really SMART. If most of YA heroine's had her intellect most books would be so much more enjoyable. She thinks before doing, she realizes there might be consequences. And she does that without being Mary Sue. Love her.
So happy to read this 2nd Book with Lincoln and Myla that continues their journeys, battles and romance. Truly love how the author's story just flows from the prior book and keeps you wanting to read more.
Reading Angelbound was an experience I don't remember as clearly as I'd like to, but I do remember feeling as though I was pressured to read it quickly as when I received it, it was close to the release date, and unsurprisingly, Scala was much the same, gaining an ARC copy seven days ago. However, the difference between my feeling pressured to read Angelbound quickly and Scala quickly was that I was strangely excited to see where Bauer took this series. I said I would like to read the sequel and see if it improved and that's what I've done. I've read it's sequel and thankfully, it did improve.
Scala starts off at least two months after the events of Angelbound, and I appreciated that there was quite a gap between the ending in book one and the start of book two, it allowed for an out-of-the-box develop of characters and other plot details that would have only taken up necessary pages in the story and that's always a feature I enjoy. I means that I can get to know the characters again, mimicking the time away I've from them between the releases and it also means that some cheesy and boring areas have been washed away and won't make the plot dry and lack entertainment value. I was also pretty impressed with how quickly Bauer got to work on developing the plot for Scala, and also how she managed to make this installment stand out on it's own from it's predecessor; yes, it was pretty predictable at times, but it didn't, in my opinion suffer from middle book syndrome and neither did it feel as though it lead up to some spectacular set up for the next and I assume final installment, it was paced well, there were plenty of action scenes to go around and the romance feature was developed and considered throughout and while I have a few problems with the language used to define a part of Myla's personality and the amount of present day slang and slurs used in the book such as 'cray-cray', overall, the writing was as strong as previously and it flowed pretty well. The world wasn't as strong as it was last time however, and that would be another drawback from the level of enjoyment this installment could have given me.
From a character development and romance point of view, Scala excelled much more than Angelbound. Where I had struggled to connect to Myla in the first installment and thought she was quite a gushy, and overly cheesy character around Lincoln, I found her to be much better and much more enjoyable to read about in this novel. It was fantastic to finally see her out of the school environment and doing more rather than saying more, being in control and using her authority to her ability, but also embracing herself much more around her friends, family and Lincoln which was nice to see. Of course, there is the romance side of things and I having been more prepared this time for steamy and highly tense scenes between both Myla and Lincoln is was much more enjoyable. I appreciated that Bauer included the the very normal and believable traits of being sexually attracted to someone, the touching and feeling, the teasing and being pretty damn hot on occasions and also covered subjects of masturbation and personal pleasure, which I seriously don't think are covered enough in young adult/new adult novels which is a shame. Bauer has a raw talent for both bringing out the sexiness and appeal of their very lustful relationship, but also the sense of commitment and generally quite sweet nature between the characters. Myla's relationship and development with her parents was also wonderful to see, her newly developed relationship with her Father was very realistic and actually really enjoyable, and the banter that spread between the family as a whole was lovely. I think it's a shame that in this novel Myla spent less time with Cissy with both work commitments and her relationship with Lincoln taking more of a central stage, but overall, what you did see of their friendship was anchored in place as is still firm and strong on both sides.
Overall, there was something about the writing or the plot that I couldn't always take to, and still now I can't place exactly what that is, but it did bother me throughout, however, the plot points, the twists, the developments and the surprising none-cliffy ending was quite pleasant. Actually, I take that back, the none-cliffy ending completely threw me having read the description for Armageddon, I totally had this assumption that I would be left with Myla in Hell, but alas, I got a very good ending to a very good book. I'd also like to mention how much I'm liking that some self-published authors are releasing their series all in one year, less waiting to lose sense of the world and plot and much more enjoyment for readers. It's fair to say that when I read Angelbound I was going through a dislike of so many Angel vs Demon styled fantasy's and I think that affected my enjoyment and my review, however, Scala has proven to me that this is a good series, and for people who enjoy the Angel/Demons aspect with a touch of magic, ghouls and a romance that will have you smirking your face off, Angelbound is a good one to start.
