Dragon has a busy and fun-filled Halloween, turning six small pumpkins into one big jack-o-lantern, going to a costume party, and taking a spooky walk in the woods.
David "Dav" Pilkey (b. March 4, 1966), is a popular children's author and artist. Pilkey is best known as the author and illustrator of the Captain Underpants book series. He lives near Seattle, Washington with his wife, Sayuri.
Well, this was a Halloween book with a ton of cute cats on the front, so of course I had to check it out. I'm not familiar with the Dragon stories, but I will have to look into more of them and see if I can find out how Dragon met all the cats.
This book has 3 smaller stories about Dragon celebrating Halloween.
1. Six Small Pumpkins This was my favorite story. Dragon wants a huge pumpkin to make a scary jack-o'-lantern, but only six small pumpkins are left in the patch. Crocodile and Fox make fun of his small pumpkins saying they will not be scary, but Dragon keeps telling them "just wait." They all see how scary six small pumpkins can be!
2. The Costume Party Dragon can't decide between his witch, vampire, and mummy costumes, so he decides to wear all 3. But it rains on the way to the party and everyone laughs when he comes in. Then a pumpkin lands on his head and everyone is scared of the gooey pumpkin monster!
3. The Deep Dark Woods Walking home through the dark woods one night, a hungry Dragon starts hearing very scary growling noises! A grumpy squirrel woken up buy Dragon's screaming tells him it's just his stomach that's growling! Dragon goes home and makes a pumpkin feast.
Not my favorite of the series, but then I'm not a big fan of Halloween, either. I dunno if this would appeal more to fans of that holiday, probably so. I mean, I did like much of the humor, and most of the art, after all.
This was another book about Dragon that my grandson asked me to read to him. It has some lovely illustrations that detail how dragon gets scared in the forest, makes a scary Halloween display and chooses a costume for a party. Before we started reading my grandson told me that it wasn't really very scary. Once again he seemed familiar and comfortable with the stories.
I didn't think this was a great as Dragon's first book ("A Friend for Dragon") but it was still cute.
It is divided into very short chapters. First, Dragon makes a scary monster out of some pumpkins. Next, he goes to a costume party, a pumpkin lands on his head, and he scares the others so much that a hippo sits on a mouse. (The mouse is squashed but apparently fine.) Last, Dragon is walking alone in the woods and hears a scary growling sound--which of course is just his stomach.
We have really enjoyed The Dragon Tales series of books by Dav Pilkey. They are funny and silly and entertaining and encourage young readers to expand to beginning chapter books. This is a fun book with a Halloween theme. We enjoyed reading this book together.
As I do not have any "littles" around much anymore, I was unaware that this book is from a series of "Dragon's" books. I picked up this one for Halloween. The cover is adorable with the blue dragon and plethora of cats at his feet.
The story follows along Dragon as he tries to scare others and himself. As the book is chopped up into three small chapters, the first chapter is him trying to carve scary pumpkins, next scary costumes, and finally scares of the night. I have not told you much other than the titles for each chapter.
It is a perfect book for kids who are beginning to read, who like the author, dragons, animals, and most importantly Halloween. I found the short stories to be cute and engaging enough that I wanted to turn the page. The illustrations had all the colors you would expect for Halloween and a few more. The pictures went well with the words.
A nice little addition to the book was in thr back where the author illustrates how to draw Dragon. Fun! Also, the very last page asks kids questions of what costumes they might wear to a costume party and encourages kids to draw them.
Good book and it gets 4 pumpkins (but not too scary) from me.
Disclosure: I picked up a copy of this book from my local library. The views here are 100% my own and may differ from yours. ~Michelle, Reading Authors Network
I will defend children’s lit up and down to people that say that it is dumb and, well, juvenile, but every other Dav Pilkey book I have read has been INSUFFERABLE. Dog Man is so bad y’all. Captain Underpants? 🙄 But this one was pretty good. Was it because it was so short that the characters couldn’t get on my nerves? No, it was because Dragon is shown on the cover and on page 21 to have 6 cats and scares himself with a pile of pumpkins.
Dragon uses six small pumpkins to make a sort of scary snowman pumpkin Jack-o'-lantern. Dragon goes to a party dressed up in three costumes, but he gets rained on and a hippo sits on a mouse. Dragon thinks his stomach growling is a monster, and a squirrel scolds him and tells him to go home and eat something. These Dragon books are so cute and funny. A better alternative by this author to read to my daughter instead of the dog man books.
This is a slightly longer picture book broken up into three small chapters similar to the more advanced “I Can Read” books. My youngest really enjoyed it. I caught him smiling numerous times. It’s really cute and funny. Dragon is so endearing and we loved the clowder of cats that follows him around. It’s been a long time since I read a Dragon book and this one inspired me to check out more while my youngest finds them appealing.
The Dragon beginning chapter books are so fun and endearing. It’s time for Halloween. Dragon could not find large pumpkins so he makes his jack-O-lantern out of 6. No one thinks it will be scary. And they say the same thing about his costume. Until a pumpkin gets involved. A great book for the youngest readers in your life.
This is a fun easy reader geared toward kids who are just starting with chapter books. The illustrations are delightful and perfectly capture the magic of the spooky season without being too scary. Both the story and illustrations have a classic quality that brings to mind memorable children's lit from years past.
Dragon rocks Halloween by using all he had. That includes 6 small pumpkins and parts of three costumes. Through a small accident his costume gets scary and becomes the hit of the party. You never know what will happen.
My son is nearly 7. We love Pilkey, but may have missed the age appropriate boat on this one. My son politely sat through the story but honestly could have cared less. He was way more interested in the next Bad Guys graphic novel than Dragon. May be a cute option for younger kids.
It’s Halloween, and Dragon wants it to be scary! He carves pumpkins, finds a costume for a costume party, and takes a creepy walk through some deep dark woods!
This series is super fun for beginning readers and as a read aloud for younger kids too- my 4 year old loves Dragon!
My child seemed to enjoy the characters and storyline, it has funny moments and a little 'scary' things for small kids, but still they are entertaining. The illustrations are cute and full of details, loved all the cats and the Dragon.
My neighbour and I had a garage sale. I ended up buying this and some Roald Dahl books off of her. This was adorable and set the perfect atmosphere for a 6 year old’s Halloween!
This is a book made up of 3 short, funny, and easy-to-read stories. 1. Six Small Pumpkins; 2. The Costume Party; 3. The Deep Dark Woods. Fun illustrations.
