“He stands with a stretch and a great big sigh. 'I hope I can make it. I do want to try.' 'Don't worry,' squeaks Mouse. Hare says, 'It's all right. We'll keep you busy all day and all night.'” I love love love this children's Christmas book! It's insanely adorable and you can easily read it over and over and over again because this story is all kinds of fun to read aloud. It teaches the value of friendship, of kindness, of giving and how you should treat others. The rhymes are very catchy and there is also some repetition. I love all the different animals Karma Wilson used in this story which includes a bear, gopher, hare, raven, wren, mole, and a mouse, it really enriched it that much more. Bear Stays Up for Christmas is truly a magical book that is a MUST read especially at Christmas time :) The illustrations are charming and super cute! I recommend this book to everyone who wants to share in the joys of reading to those they love at Christmas or whenever.
My daughter loved the Bear 🐻 books, so I still read them all these years later for sentimental reasons. Bear Stays Up for Christmas is especially sweet. Bears friends help him stay up for Christmas and Santa leaves bear a special gift. Beautiful illustrations and highly recommended for children and adults!
I feel like I have seen this story before. It’s got a host of cute animals in it. Bear usually sleeps through Christmas and this year, his friends are making sure he stays up to see Christmas.
It’s cute and it’s got holiday cheer and I like the rhyme it’s told in. I feel books need to be told in rhyme more. I love it.
The nephew loved the mole (Okay?). He thought the animals were cute and he liked that Santa snuck up on them. He gave this book 3 stars too.
Read for my toddler's bedtime. It's the night before Christmas and Bear was sleepy. All of his friends came coaxing him to stay up. Later they got tired and slept but Bear was able to stay up to get the presents ready for his friends.
This precious little picture book tells the story of the bear whose friends want him to stay up for Santa. This is one in a series of children's picture books involving this bear, each one told in congenial rhyming verse appropriate for a preschooler or a toddler that is ready to listen to a story. Each page has roughly four lines of text in adorable rhythmic cadence, and the pictures fill the entire page with rich color. In the end, the bear stays up after his friends fall asleep, because he wants to be the one to surprise them with gifts. Santa puts in a brief appearance; there is no religious content. If the reaction of my two-and-a-half year old grandson is any measure, this one is a resounding success...not to mention that it's engaging enough that parents won't object to having to read it repeatedly.
This is the second book for February that I read with my grandson Aeverie. Even though this was meant for Christmas we still enjoyed it a lot. This one is written in verse and the title is pretty self explanatory. The illustrations are done beautifully as well. A great read for the little ones at Christmas time.
The illustrations in this book are very good. The bear is appealing. The story teaches patience and unselfishness. However, I do feel that while the storyline is good, it lacks originality.
Everyone knows that bears sleep through the winter, but Bear's friends do not want him to miss Christmas, so Bear does his best to stay up.
"He stands with a stretch and a great big sigh. 'I hope I can make it. I do want to try.' 'Don't worry,' squeaks Mouse. Hare says, 'It's all right. We'll keep you busy all day and all night.'"
And keep him busy they do, with many of the traditional Christmas activities - getting and decorating a tree, baking, singing Christmas carols. This is a wonderful book to read any time, but especially during the Christmas season. As with the other books in the Bear series, Jane Chapman's illustrations make a perfect accompaniment to the engaging rhyming text.
Everything looks so dreamy and so Christmas-y here! Love the illustrations. And I bet this is one of the most cosiest picture books on Christmas with the cutest animals in it.
Truly magical book that children love to read with you especially near Christmas. I love books that make Christmas so special for the little ones. Recommended.
Some authors just have it – that ability to write stories in rhyme for young children that simply dance off the page and spill off the tongue with a tempo and fluidity that make them so easy to read aloud and so captivating for a child to listen to. Karma Wilson is one such author.
The scene is set – will Bear hibernate through yet another Christmas day, or will his faithful band of animal friends manage to keep him awake? Having read quite a few now in the Bear series, I, like all children, can’t wait to see what this group of friends will get up to – Mouse, Mole, Hare, Gopher, Badger, Wren, Raven, and, of course, Bear. Jane Chapman’s illustrations of these forest animals are rich, full of emotion and wonderfully flesh out each of the characters, partnering perfectly with the text.
Well, everyone pitches in to keep Bear awake as they go through the typical pre- Christmas day preparations of finding the tree, decorating it, hanging up stockings, singing carols…. Finally, as Christmas Eve comes to a close, all the animals are weary from their festive exertions and fall asleep. Bear alone remains awake now, and in the usual spirit of friendship of all the Bear books, he busies himself with making Christmas surprises for his friends. He does not, however, see the biggest surprise of all, Santa making a visit that Christmas Eve night!
Karma manages to vary pace and tone with her rhyme, and yet adds enough predictability to engage pre-K children with ease. The illustrations are truly priceless, filling each two-page spread with warm brown tones of the lair’s interior or purples and blues of a snowy midwinter’s night, and bringing each animal to lofe.
Our girls really like this one. Once again, Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman have come through with a fun story about Bear and his friends.
With a rhyming narrative, this story with a Christmas theme is fun to read aloud. And the pictures are charming - we love Bear's expressions. We really enjoy reading this book together and we've read it many times.
December 2015 update: We borrowed this book again from our local library to read with our two-year-old niece during her visit with my brother-in-law just before Christmas. She is a big fan of Bear Snores On, and she really enjoyed pointing out the mouse, bear, hare and other characters.
This book was fun to read. All the animals convinced the bear to stay up for Christmas this year and it shows all the activities they did. You could ask the children why do they think bear slept through Christmas every year and introduce them to the word "hibernation." This book shows that the value of friendship and also shows you that when you treat others well, you will be trated well too. Bear made all his friends gifts while they were sleeping and didn't even notice Santa bringing him a gift.

We love these! Every kids book should have such a catchy rhyme pattern.
1/11/10: And today we just read the new one: Bear Feels Scared. Also great! (Others in the series: Bear Snores On, Bear's New Friend, Bear Feels Sick...)
I'm not sure why exactly, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed this Christmas Bear story. It was in pretty regular rotation this past Christmas season. It is only our second Bear book and now I want to read all the others :)
